On this episode of Taste Buds with Deb, host Debra Eckerling speaks with David Chiu, communication manager at The Braid and producer of their new video series, “Tastes of Tradition.”   “One thing that we at The Braid notice is that food and storytelling, especially for us Jews, are  inseparable,” Chiu explains.  “Food is as much about the people you're sharing it with as the recipes themselves.”   In their snackable videos (they are about two-and-a-half minutes each), “Tastes of Tradition” invites the audience into the kitchens of five diverse Jewish families.    Featured in the series are Instagram chef Sivan Kobi (Sivan's Kitchen) and her Iraqi Jewish mother, Yafa, who prepare kitchri, and Chinese-American celebrity chef and cookbook author Katie Chin and her teenage daughter Becca, an Asian American Jew, who make latkes with Asian-inspired dipping sauces.    Also,  graphic novelist Emily Bowen Cohen, a Muscogee (Creek) Nation member, joins her son Maccabee and mother-in-law Beth to make fry bread for Hanukkah; award-winning comic and educator Joshua Silverstein, who is black and Jewish, and his 16-year-old stepson, Ami, make allergy-friendly hamantaschen for Purim; and Kimberly Dueñas, co-founder of Jewtina y Co, and her father Solomon, a crypto-Jew from El Salvador who kept his Jewish identity hidden for years due to the legacy of the Spanish Inquisition, prepare challah.    The series is on brand for The Braid, a vibrant cultural hub for connection, creativity, and stories that reflects the diversity of the Jewish experience. And food is frequently part of the mix.    “To me, the most powerful thing about food is that it's passed down,” Chiu explains. “Even if you don't  pass down Shabbat traditions or other religious things,  there's something that you take from your family related to food.”    Chiu, who is a Chinese American Jew, says he finds that also true on the Chinese side of his family. When he went off to college, Chiu wrote to his dad, asking him how to cook.    “He sent me all these recipes, which was hard for him because he's an immigrant and he never wrote anything down,” Chiu explains. “But his recipes became my way of connecting with him and his culture.”   David Chiu shares the origin story of “Tastes of Tradition,” the different ways The Braid integrates food into their offerings, and how he developed his love of cooking. He also shares Katie Chin's recipe for double happiness latkes with Asian dipping sauces, which you can find at JewishJournal.com/podcasts.   Learn more about The Braid's “Tastes of Tradition” video series at The-braid.org/tastes.  For more from Taste Buds, subscribe on iTunes and YouTube, and follow @TheDEBMethod on social media.

Çocuk keçisinin peşinden koşayım derken kurşun yağmuruna tutuldu ve can verdi.

Geçtiğimiz salı günü, İlim Yayma Cemiyeti Keşan Şubesi Başkanı Gürsel Debreli'nin delaleti, Yurt Müdürü Nurullah Güney'in gayretiyle Keşan İlim Yayma Cemiyeti Yükseköğrenim Yurdu'nda öğrencilerle Filistin konulu bir sohbette bulunduk.

3. Doğu'ya Seyahat / Ida Pfeiffer Avustralyalı kadın kâşif ve seyyah Ida Pfeiffer, 1842 yılında gemiyle Viyana'dan başladığı Doğu yolculuğu sırasında İstanbul, Bursa, Beyrut, Yafa, Ölüdeniz, Kudüs, Nâsıra, Şam, Baalbek, Beyrut, İskenderiye ve Kahire'ye uğramış, ardından Sicilya ve İtalya üzerinden ülkesine dönmüştü. Günlüklerden izler taşıyan kitap, gezilip görülen yerlerin manzarasını tasvir ederken, bugünkü Ortadoğu'nun çok canlı bir panoramasını sunuyor. Pfeiffer'in İslâm'a ve Müslümanlara karşı olumlu bakışı ise, dönemin şartları çerçevesinde çok şaşırtıcı. 4. Mekke'de Güç ve Hâkimiyet / Burak Gani Erol Memlûk tarihinin Türkiye'deki sayılı uzmanlarından biri olan Burak Gani Erol, eserinde az bilinen bir döneme ışık tutuyor: Kahire merkezli Memlûk İmparatorluğu döneminde Mekke emirlerinin atanması, Hicaz'da oluşan güç dengeleri, hacılara hizmetin yöneticilere sağladığı prestij, merkezî idare ile taşra arasındaki gerilimler ve daha birçok detay, gözler önüne seriliyor. Kitap, Mekke'nin siyasî konumunu bütün boyutlarıyla ortaya koyuyor.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: AI-Written Critiques Help Humans Notice Flaws, published by Paul Christiano on June 25, 2022 on The AI Alignment Forum. This is a linkpost for a recent paper from the OpenAI alignment team (disclaimer: I used to work with this team). They summarize their results as: We trained “critique-writing” models to describe flaws in summaries. Human evaluators find flaws in summaries much more often when shown our model's critiques. Larger models are better at self-critiquing, with scale improving critique-writing more than summary-writing. This shows promise for using AI systems to assist human supervision of AI systems on difficult tasks. I currently believe that "AI helps human notice subtle problems with AI behavior" is a critical step in the most realistic current plans for aligning powerful ML systems. So I'm quite excited to see how far it can get. I think this is probably the best published example of AI helping human evaluate AI outputs in a realistic domain. It seems like the AI assistance is a little bit helpful for human evaluation of summaries and for improving summary quality. Overall it feels like a promising sign of life, and I'm excited about seeing the next steps in this direction, though it's not yet a convincing demonstration that this is a promising approach to alignment in practice. Overview of task They trained models to answer questions like "Summarize what this text says about ." They then trained models to critique answers (by imitating human critiques), to evaluate the helpfulness of critiques, to improve a summary to address a critique, and to predict whether summaries would have flaws identified by critiques. Humans also performed and evaluated these tasks, with access to the full text. The goal of model assistance was to improve the speed and reliability with which humans could evaluate summaries. To give a sense for the task, here is a uniformly random sample of a model's summary of a text, its self-critique, and its refinement of its answer based on self-critique: Summary: The main context of this text is the 1997 Singer Akai Cup. The Singer Akai Cup was held in Sharjah, UAE. The three national teams that took part were Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Zimbabwe. Critique: The answer should mention the winners of the tournament. Refinement: The main context of this text is the 1997 Singer Akai Cup. The Singer Akai Cup was held in Sharjah, UAE. The three national teams that took part were Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Zimbabwe. Sri Lanka won the tournament. My sense is that this is a pretty typical example. I can see how it helps a human but it definitely isn't super satisfying (for example the length vs detail tradeoff is unclear). I do believe that the critiques meaningfully help humans overall based on the evidence in the paper, but I expect it will be possible to get a much clearer win in the near future. Measuring critique quality In some sense the clearest evaluation would be "how much did model-assisted critiques improve the speed+accuracy of human evaluations of AI summary quality, as judged by other humans who read the text carefully?" Although they performed this experiment, the effect sizes are small and it would take a huge amount of human time to get a clear signal, so they don't have results in the paper (though I'm sure they would have loved to). I think the the cleanest evaluation they did was instead having humans write deliberately misleading summaries; in this case, they can measure critique quality by how much the AI assistant helped a human reviewer find the deliberate error. (I think the same thing would probably happen for model-written summaries with natural errors, but it's much harder to measure.) Here is a uniformly randomly sample from this setting: Question: What happened to Yafa in the winter of 1990? Deliberately bad summary: In ...

This month we talked with Yafa El Masri, who is getting a doctorate in Geography in a joint research program between the University of Padova, University of Venice, and University of Verona. She was also a visiting researcher at the Global Development Studies Unit at the Social Sciences Faculty of the University of Helsinki. Yafa is also a stateless Palestinian refugee who was born and raised in refugee camps in Lebanon. She does autoethnographic research on solidarity among refugees in refugees camps. She has worked extensively with grassroots organizations and development projects within her community. Growth centered development has been very devastating to life on our planet, including the erosion of solidarity in favor of individualism. Solidarity is a social norm wherein one acts in the interest of others, even if sometimes that may contradict your own best interest. One acts in the benefit of the community even if each individual has fewer resources for their own use. Maybe it is solidarity that is the missing ingredient to save to the world in the face of our multiple concurrent crises. Yafa has found that solidarity is alive and well in the refugee community and that the refugee community can teach the world a lot about how to practice solidarity. (Conf.

Between the latest online fads and the crazy media headlines, it’s easier than ever to get confused about your health. If you want to make better decisions about your health today so you can feel better and live longer, you’ve come to the right place. Today we’re continuing our conversation on the effect of grains on health. I’m joined by Stephen Yafa, an author and speaker who has critically studied the current ideas and widely accepted misconceptions about wheat — if it has been genetically modified in dangerous ways, whether its basic structure has changed over recent decades, and whether it triggers diseases outside of Celiac. Stephen clarifies the differences between refined wheat and whole wheat, explains the benefits of various types of sourdough, and offers insights into the artisanal flour movement in America. If you are wondering if grains are actually harmful to people without Celiac disease, or what might happen to the gut health of a person with Celiac disease who decides to eat more fermented foods such as sourdough bread, you’ll want to listen to my conversation with Stephen. He has taken the time to break down some of the most common misconceptions about wheat, and he just might convince you that the health benefits of a whole grain diet is worth getting more involved in the growing and delicious worldwide artisanal movement.   Key Takeaways: [1:10] Today we continue our conversation about grains — are they harmful to people who don’t have Celiac disease? Introducing Stephen Yafa, a gluten researcher with answers. [2:31] Stephen shares the experiences and preconceived notions that led him to dive deep into the controversial topic of gluten. [6:15] A quick overview of the false information that is being presented in some of today’s most popular anti-gluten literature. [9:02] Has there been a dramatic shift in genetics that has caused humans to be less tolerant of wheat over the last century? [12:02] How the origin of wheat positively affected civilization over thousands of years. [13:09] The correlation between wheat and the obesity epidemic has more to do with the processing of wheat than the composition of wheat itself. [15:34] Evidence shows that natural fermentation can affect your health in a far more significant way than processed wheat. [18:04] A look at the benefits of making whole grains a central part of a healthy diet, including lower cholesterol and blood pressure and a longer-lasting feeling of fullness. [19:50] Understanding the link between cardiovascular death and whole grain in people without Celiac disease. [21:15] The health benefits of ingesting naturally fermented breads, particularly sourdough, when it passes through the gut wall without triggering an immune response. [25:38] What would happen if you offered a naturally fermented sourdough bread to a person with Celiac disease? [27:56] A peek inside the artisanal flour movement, including baking conventions and the passion and knowledge that inspires bakers around the world to continue experimenting with wheat. [32:32] Stephen’s weight loss findings from perfecting his Final Five sourdough bread recipe. [36:40] A gluten-free diet is synonymous with healthy eating, and other misconceptions about what people have to give up in order to live a more healthy lifestyle. [40:39] Stephen’s recommendations for adding layers of complexity and flavor to any diet — fermented foods. [42:36] Do you have a topic you’d like me to cover? An ozer is an "assistant," but could also mean "he’s helping" - a verb in the present tense. How are you supposed to know which one it is? Host Guy Sharett teaches us how to work it out from the context, and he explains what initials religious people jot on every piece of paper they write on. New words & expressions: Azar – He helped – עזר Shalom, efshar laazor – Hello, may I help? – ? Efshar laazor lecha? – May I help you? – ? La’azor, laavod, laanot – To help, to work, to answer – לעזור, לעבוד, לענות Ata yachol laazor li bevakasha? At yechola laazor li bevakasha? – Could you help me please? – ? Ulay at yechola la’azor li – Maybe you can help me – אולי את יכולה לעזור לי Eich ani yachol/yechola laazor lecha? – How can I help you? Ze mamash azar li – This really helped me –זה ממש עזר לי Ze lo azar – It didn’t help – זה לא עזר Hayiti be-20 tipulim, shum davar lo azar – I went to 20 sessions, nothing helped – הייתי ב-20 טיפולים, שום דבר לא עזר Lo ya’azor bet din – Even a court won’t help (Nothing will help) – לא יעזור בית דין Lo ya’azor klum – Nothing can help – לא יעזור כלום Ozer – He’s helping / Assistant – עוזר Ozer sar – Assistant to the minister – עוזר שר Ozer bayit / ozeret bayit – Cleaner – עוזר בית / עוזרת בית Ha-natsim ve-ozreyhem – The Nazis and their helpers – הנאצים ועוזריהם Ezra – Help – עזרה Ezra – A guy’s name – עזרא Ezra rishona – First aid – עזרה ראשונה Likro le’ezra – To call for help – לקרוא לעזרה Yafa sheli – My beauty – יפה שלי At chayevet lilmod levakesh ezra – You must learn how to ask for help – את חייבת ללמוד לבקש עזרה Levakesh ezra mi - To ask for help from someone – -לבקש עזרה מ Ha-mishtara mevakeshet et ezrat ha-tsibur – The Police is asking the help of the public – המשטרה מבקשת את עזרת הציבור Be’ezrat ha-shem – With the help of god – בעזרת השם Bi’siata di-shmaya (Basad) – With the help of the sky (god) – (בסיעתא דשמיא (בס"ד Ne’ezer – He was helped – נעזר Ne’ezer be- – To be helped by – -נעזר ב Ani ne’ezer be-milon kedei likro ivrit – I am being helped by a dictionary in order to read Hebrew – אני נעזר במילון כדי לקרוא עברית Lehe’azer be – To be helped, assisted by – להיעזר ב   Guy’s parting monologue: היום אני רוצה לספר לכם שעשיתי סיור בצרפתית בשבת עם כמה עולים חדשים מצרפת. Today I’d like to tell you that I led a tour in French on Saturday with a few new immigrants from France. It was really fun. And it’s amazing to see how, time and again, I meet people who went through traumas with Hebrew teachers, and with language teachers in general, not only with Hebrew. In many cases it’s related to immigration - parents who want a connection to the old homeland of the family, and send the kids to a place where they’ll teach them language, culture and religion. Like many kids, they suffer there because they want to fit in in the new country and because often the teachers are not really enthusiastic about teaching language, and in the case of Hebrew, there are rabbis at Talmud Torah schools in New York who teach Hebrew with a Yiddish accent and not contemporary Israeli slang like we learn here.   Playlist and clips:Noy Alooshe – Shalom, Efshar La’azorDave explains how to deal with stutteringSchuna – Nickelodeon ChannelRona Kenan – Kshe-Hakotsim Hayu Kotsim (Lyrics)Sarit Hadad - Be’ezrat Ha-shem (Lyrics)
