The VOE Podcast is focusing on Earth Day, Friday, April 22. We're talking to a leader in the sustainability arena, to someone who is really hoping to drive results in this space. That person is Kathleen Pitre, president of Beverage Packaging in North and Central America for Ball Corporation. The Daniels College of Business has had a great relationship with Ball Corporation, hosting CEO John Hayes for Voice of Experience in 2016, providing student consulting projects, guest speaking in classrooms. Kathleen has been with Ball for 18 years, much of it working on their sustainability efforts. The VOE Podcast is an extension of Voices of Experience, the signature speaker series at the University of Denver's Daniels College of Business. Keep tuning in each month for more business insights from Daniels' alumni voices of experience. Transcript Kristal Griffith: Kathleen, we're delighted to host you. Welcome to the VOE Podcast. Kathleen Pitre: Thanks Kristal. Great to be with you. Kristal Griffith: So before we get to our big topic of the day, I'd like people to, to know you. I know you went to Colorado state university for your bachelor's and masters in technical and speech communications. You started your career at ball aerospace in communications, and then moved over to ball core in 2014. Can you share a little bit about your background, your career journey? Kathleen Pitre: Sure. As you mentioned I started in ball aerospace. I worked in our aerospace business for 11 years doing a variety of things, whether it was marketing, business development, government relations, customer relations, et cetera. And then in 2014, I moved over to the corporate side where I did corporate relations. That's when I really got involved in sustainability and became our head of sustainability, which I did until, 2019, where I became the chief commercial officer, which is basically our head of sales for our global organization, as well as our chief sustainability officer. That was the first time that we formally put ability in sales together. And in September I started the job that I'm in now, which is president of our north and central America beverage packaging business. Kristal Griffith: Kathleen, I was gonna lead right into that. I'm curious what that means. I'm thinking specifically for our listeners, maybe our students, you, what does your job entail? What does that look like? Kathleen Pitre: We are the largest beverage canned manufacturer in the world. Ball's North and Central America business that I run is, is the largest division within Ball. So if you live in the United States or you live in Canada or Mexico, Central America, almost half of the beverage cans made in those regions are made by Ball. This year our goal is to make and sell 60 billion aluminum beverage cans. So we make a lot of cans and, we fill them with energy drinks and Selzer and sparkling water and soda and, whatever you can think to put in a can, we will sell the can for it. Kristal Griffith: I love it. I love it. Yeah. I've seen cans all over the place. And I think at one point maybe there was some kind of crisis or something. And so you ended up putting water in them for a country that would a need. So I've seen you do all sorts of things like that for kind of a social good mission as well. Kathleen Pitre: Yes, our, we have several of our, uh, large customers like Molson Coors and Anheuser Bush and Beverage as well as, a craft brew customer, Oscar Blue. And we have disaster relief water programs where we donate the cans and they fill the cans and distribute them to people in need. It's it is a great partnership. Kristal Griffith: Let's get to our big topic of the day. Um, earth day, all corporation has put forth some ambitious sustainability goals in the past year. The company is calling it toward a perfect circle. It's really emphasizing products being fully recyclable. So talk a little bit about that vision and where it came from. Kathleen Pitre:
FoodBev Media's Sian Yates rounds up this week's food and beverage news, including: Danone welcomes three new directors to its board; Pernod Ricard acquires Château Sainte Marguerite; Ball Corporation to construct aluminium packaging plant in UK; and more.
A frothy mix of supply chain issues has set two longtime collaborators on a collision course: Westminster's aluminum can giant, Ball Corporation, and the local brewers who like to sell their beer in cans. Ball's always been good to small craft breweries, but the past two years have put the company in an impossible predicament. So what does this mean for your favorite neighborhood brewery? Will you still be able to buy their beer in a store? Will a 6-pack cost you an arm and a leg if you do? City Cast Denver producer Paul Karolyi sits down with Denver Business Journal beer reporter Ed Sealover to talk through the whole story. For more of Sealover's reporting on the Ball Corp./craft brewing situation, click here. After the interview, we asked Sealover for a local beer rec, and he did not disappoint. Ball Corporation has postponed the implementation of its new minimum order quantities and warehousing policy until March 1 after conversations with the Brewers Association and Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR). Aaron Zimmerman talks to Henry Vilas Zoo lead zookeeper Gary Hartlage about keeping animals, such as rhinos and giraffes, happy and healthy in the winter. It's more than keeping them fed and watered. Animals need engagement to prevent being bored if they have to stay inside. Cranberry processor Ocean Spray sees obstacles and opportunities going into the new year. Tom Tritt, plant manager of Ocean Spray's Craisin facility in Wisconsin Rapids, says the plant is experiencing labor challenges. On the other end of the spectrum, it has seen robust demand for cranberry products. The increased demand for canned beer is outpacing the supply of aluminum cans, according to Wisconsin Brewers Guild Vice President Zak Koga. The pandemic-induced trend has pushed Ball Corporation to enact new ordering restrictions for cans, upping the minimum order five times over — from about 200,000 cans per brand to 1 million. Koga says it's hurting craft breweries, which are also facing inflation, supply chain disruption and labor shortages. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In this last episode in this collection we go primarily to the US and Middle East, where we meet with some seasoned as well as newer directors to hear their thoughts on the evolution of the role and the power of diversity. We also hear from two guests, Dr. Rania Azmi and Kimberly Smith, who will feature in the first series of our 2022 Fiftyfaces Podcast. First we hear from Jan Nicholson, who is president of two private family foundations, the Nicholson Foundation in New Jersey, and the Grable Foundation in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She has held board positions at Rubbermaid, Ball Corporation and Radian Group, Inc., from 1990 to 2015. I asked her about how her investment experience fed in to her Board roles, and how even without specific industry experience it is. possible to add value by leveraging her own expertise – e.g. on the Audit Committee of a board. Staying in the US we then hear from legal legend, former Michigan Supreme Court Judge and Mayor of Detroit, Dennis Archer. Dennis has committed his life to lifting up people behind him on the ladder, and he reflects on the levels of diversity within Board level roles and why diversity has such value. We hear then from Gerald Chen-Young, who was formerly CIO of the United Negro College Fund as well as holding numerous board roles and now running his own consultancy. He is candid about his reflections on his time in the executive role and how he wishes he had done even more to promote inclusion. Alex's favorite magazine, Esquire, the official periodical of all lawyers, endorses the opinion that people should only drink half their beer then discard the rest. Does this endorsement hold any integrity? No. In other Beer News, aluminum tariffs threaten to destroy the Ball Corporation unless breweries start ordering no less than 1 million cans. In the Bottleshare, Alex brings in a hidden gem of a barleywine from Wax Wings Brewing Co. that caused a local scandal. Stephen is back on his shelf turd shit again. The demand for beer is outpacing the supply of the aluminum cans. Tight supply has pushed Ball Corporation to enact new ordering restrictions for cans, upping the minimum order 5 times over, from 200,000 cans per brand to 1 million. This is impacting craft breweries. Zak Koga is the co-owner of Karben4 Brewery in Madison and the vice president of the Wisconsin Brewers Guild. He explains more. This week's topic is about the Ball Corporation's new aluminum cups. We've all seen the classic Ball jars with that thick glass and metal top for canning vegetables - in my case, I use them as drinking glasses. As the world evolves so has Ball and they've recently announced the aluminum drinking cup that can replace the plastic solo type cups. They come with ample sizes to drink from, they are more sturdy and well insulated to keep your beverage cool and it is a much more appealing drinking experience. Now here's the good stuff: 20 billion plastic cups are used per year and 93% end up in landfills; however, 75% of all aluminum is recycled and is the most valuable commodity in the recycle bin. So as they are producing more aluminum cups less plastic will be used As far as the upfront cost goes, you'll save triple the amount to that of the aluminum cup; however, once you reuse each cup just four times you'll save be saving money In my humble opinion, this is a no-brainer product that just about everyone can take advantage of and the best part is that has a positive impact on the environment Ball Aluminum Cups https://www.ball.com/aluminumcups/where-to-buy?gclid=cj0kcqia15ynbhdtarisagnwe0woqhymlgw7d8mk-j4sh4cnmvtqs8ddv818zllb3jrd97sisyx-v08aajesealw_wcb Website https://www.somethingonmymind.net/ Merchandise https://www.somethingonmymind.net/shop Social Media https://www.instagram.com/somm.podcast/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChec5qcZBcGkIhUU3belNDw https://www.tiktok.com/@somm.podcast?lang=en https://www.facebook.com/somm.podcast https://twitter.com/Somm_podcast
Today I'm drinking a Frost Beerworks IPA https://store.frostbeerworks.com/product/ipa-4pack-for-pick-up/269 The Alchemist Heady Topper is an enigma, and a whale, in the craft beer world. Why is it that people will drive hundreds of miles for the beer? Gear Patrol did just that (driving 400 miles) to try and figure out why there is such a cult following around the beer that has now been canned for 10 years, and started driving much of the craft beer craze in Vermont. https://www.gearpatrol.com/food/drinks/a37574997/the-alchemist-heady-topper/ Not looking for a Hazy boi? Well how about one of the 50 Best Wines of 2021? VinePair has released their list of the tops of the wine charts for you to peruse. While they tasted all manner of wines from Bordeaux to Cabs. Spoiler - it was the Pinot Noir that impressed them the most this year, with bottles from all across the Golden State — Sonoma, the Petaluma Gap, the Sta. Rita Hills, and the Central Coast — making the final cut. Check out the full list at https://vinepair.com/articles/best-wines-2021/ Ball Corporation has been notifying customers that they are moving to a. Minimum order of five truckloads per SKU for printed Cans, and will no longer warehouse inventory for customers. As the aluminum can shortages continue, most small brewers who can't meet that order are being pointed to brokers - and that could drive up costs for alcoholic and non alcoholic craft beverages. While there are more plants under construction, the shortage is expected to continue into 2022 and potentially beyond. https://www.brewersassociation.org/brewing-industry-updates/ball-customer-reduction-program/ The Boozebuddy Update is now on Video (first one) you can find the video podcast on Spotify just as you would an audio podcast (though it takes a few hours to process) or on our YouTube Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC033VXK28YhXgJAYpHS-C_w (Help me get a custom URL by viewing, liking, sharing, and subscribing!) “We hired business to consumer experts to do this (launch Ball aluminum cups) and left them on their own, without being pulled and tethered to the other bigger businesses.” Dan Fisher, Ball Corporation I've been a huge fan of Ball Corporation for years – its leaders are the real deal when it comes to a commitment to sustainability. Two topics I wanted to discuss with Dan Fisher, President, were: 1) the naming of Ball Arena (and WHY), and 2) the invention, investment in, and marketing of a new, never-before disposable – scratch that – RECYCLABLE aluminum cup. You'll hear Dan's authentic enthusiasm in this interview.
Where are all the jars?In 1975, William C Hannah of the Ball corporation was called to testify before the Subcommittee on Commodities and Services of the Small Business Committee of the US House of Representatives. He was asked to explain the company’s response to a big surge in home canning equipment. Congress was alerted to this by consumer complaints. The economic recession of the mid-1970s did much like the pandemic of 2020 by causing many more Americans to want to grow and preserve their own food. In that year, 1974, it’s estimated that as many as 26 millions Americans were canning their own food. This led to material shortages which led to canning equipment being hard to find. Mr. Hannah said that while the Ball Corporation’s sales in its first quarter of 1973 was $166,000, by the first quarter of 1974 it had reached 5,750,000.00 Because demand exceeded supplies, folks started to hoard canning supplies and the store shelves were empty. After days of hearings in 1975 & 1976, the Subcommittee on Commodities and Services gave its conclusion: “the shortage of home canning equipment was the result of normal market phenomena: exaggerated demand , which the manufacturers were unprepared to supply, partly because they failed to accurately predict it, and partly because of a shortage of raw materials the previous year. The shortage was not a result of anticompetitive behavior by the manufacturers.”The market had stabilized by 1976 and home canners could give a collective sigh of relief. Covid-19 brought the same result in lack of supplies due to more folks being home, being bored, or like myself, being home and being bored and not wanting to go to the supermarket any more than absolutely necessary. August 2020 brought the Ball jar sales up by 600 percent. That huge spike wiped out their stock. According to the April 13, 2021 issue of The Insider, out of Utah, on its website Quote ‘Retailers/distributors of the traditional Ball/Kerr brand products have informed consumers that they have not been given any clear timelines from the Newell Corporation as to when manufacturing orders would be fulfilled, due to smaller production lines still in place due to COVID. A recent conversation with a representative from the Newell Corporation (manufacturer of Ball, Kerr, and Golden Harvest canning products) indicates they are hoping for new shipments to go out toward the end of March 2021, but in limited quantities, and production will continue through the summer of 2021.’ According to not only my own research but also most people on Facebook canning groups, while jars are starting to make a comeback appearance at some stores in some states and territories, the traditional flat lids packaged without the rings are slower to show up, and when they do they are quite often bought up by the case load by any one person, although some do say they buy them to share with family and friends. I know I am grateful that my sister bought me some flat lids months ago when she found them. Canners have also been scarce, some folks reporting that they are now receiving canners that were ordered in late 2020. As of this date, the All American Canner website states “Attention: Due to remarkably high demand orders for All American Pressure Canners (910, 915, 921, 925, 930 & 941) will not ship until September, 2021.” This is the reason I recently purchased a Presto electric canner…I want to be able to can outside on my porch this summer to keep the heat out of the house, and I was worried this item would also be sold out and delayed. I am now at the point where I don’t need to be obsessive about jars and lids, and can only assume that with the hopeful wind-down of the pandemic that there will be a wind up of canning equipment production. I now have enough canners, some new and some full jars of food, and my wish is that everyone who wants to can their own food is able to do so safely and economically.

Because of the powerful interests behind it, the plastics industry dominates most conversations around waste and sustainability, and the truth about solutions and circular materials is often hidden behind doctored research and metrics. As a result, consumers are continually blamed for the problems we’re facing, and Aluminum is often overlooked and misdefined. Did you know that the only genuinely sustainable beverage container is Aluminum? Or did you ever stop to think about the technology that makes it possible to ensure the empty can of coke is recycled and back on the shelf within 60 days? Ball Corporation, the world’s leading supplier of aluminum cans and bottles, is working on a lifecycle assessment (LCA) of aluminum beverage packaging that demonstrates that recycled Aluminum is the most sustainable and lowest carbon packaging material. This is compelling, given that 75% of Aluminum is still in use today, and aluminum beverage packaging has the highest recycling rates and yields of any standard beverage container. Ball Corporation supplies innovative, sustainable aluminum packaging solutions for beverage, personal care, and household products customers, as well as aerospace and other technologies and services primarily for the U.S. government. Ball Corporation and its subsidiaries employ more than 18,300 people worldwide and reported 2019 sales of $11.5 billion. Adam Shalapin joins me on Tech Talks Daily for a deep dive into the technology that makes it possible for Aluminum to be recycled an infinite number of times without losing quality. I also learn how they can also be recycled to take on a new life as a car, laptop, or bicycle.

It has been called “the great destroyer” and “the evil.” The Pentagon refers to it as “the pervasive menace.” It destroys cars, fells bridges, sinks ships, sparks house fires, and nearly brought down the Statue of Liberty. Rust costs America more than $400 billion per year—more than all other natural disasters combined. Journalist Jonathan Waldman traveled from Key West, Florida, to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, to meet the colorful and often reclusive people who are fighting our mightiest and unlikeliest enemy. He went into an abandoned steelworks with a brave artist, and then he nearly gets kicked out of Ball Corporation’s Can School. Across the Arctic, he followed a massive high-tech robot that hunts for rust in the Alaska pipeline. On a Florida film set he meets the Defense Department’s rust ambassador, who reveals that the navy’s number one foe isn’t a foreign country but oxidation itself. Through all of these adventures, Jonathan (Jonny) uncovered more about the destructive nature of rust and the implications on our society than anyone ever has, and in this episode we ask him all about it! His newest book is titled, Rust: The Longest War. Jonathan has written for Outside, The Washington Post, The New York Times, McSweeney’s, and the Utne Reader, and also worked as a forklift driver, arborist, summer-camp director, sticker salesman, climbing instructor, and cook. Before landing in the book world, he put in time at a newspaper, a website, a magazine, a radio show, a TV production company, and a couple science museums. He studied writing at Dartmouth and Boston University’s Knight Center for Science Journalism. "We need to re-engineer engineering. Engineers are busy fixing all of the problems we don't have, but they're ignoring all of these problems we do have." - Jonathan Waldman Quotes from Jonathan: What we learn in this episode: Why is a soda can the most engineered object on earth? What are the dangers of plastics and why are they used in almost everything? Why is rust one of the most costly items in our national defense budget?
