The Celtic Spring Challenge is underway. I will tell you all about it. I'm heading back to Texas for Sherwood Forest Faire. Buy local and buy sustainable. Music from Tami Curtis, Sassenach, Charlie O'Brien, Toby Bresnahan, Brobdingnagian Bards, plus Screeched Inn with yours truly. This is Folk Songs & Stories #298 0:39 - Tami Curtis "Keep Our Fire Burning" from Cavort 4:43 - WELCOME TO FOLK SONGS & STORIES I am Marc Gunn. I'm a Celtic and Folk musician and also host of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. If you're new to the show, please subscribe. You can do that PubSong.com or Just send an email to follow@celtfather. Greetings my friends. Spring has sprung in Atlanta. Everything is covered in the yellowish glow of pollen. Fortunately, I've doubled up on allergy meds this year. It seems to have helped. I haven't lost my voice once this season, knock on wood. Even after a 4 hour show at the Wings Cafe & Tap House on St Patrick's Day. I call that a HUGE win. In the meantime, I've got a little challenge for you. It's simple, it's soulful, and it's rooted in the music we love. It's called the Celtic Spring Challenge, and it's happening all through the month of April. Here's how it works:

Today, I'm talking about… 9 Celtic Folk bands you want to watch in 2025. We also talk about simple actions we can take to combat climate change and improve our local community. This is Folk Songs & Stories #293 0:17 - WELCOME TO FOLK SONGS & STORIES I am Marc Gunn. I'm a Celtic and Folk musician and host of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. If you're new to the show, please subscribe. You can do that PubSong.com or Just send an email to follow@celtfather. Happy New Year! Climate change is a real issue, and it concerns me. I have two amazing daughters. I want them to have long healthy lives. I want them to continue to experience the great outdoors, going for hikes, and being a part of the beauty our world has to offer. That's one of the reasons I created the Album Pin. It's a beautiful product that connects you to the music. It may even make you think about how we consume. I also want to help other musicians create sustainable music careers. I believe Album Pin is the way to do just that. This year on Folk Songs & Stories, as well as my other podcasts, I have three goals. First, I will introduce you to some great Celtic and Folk musicians that I encounter as part of my travels or from through my Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. We'll dig a little deeper into their music. Second, I hope to share simple, practical tips on how to live life more sustainably. And finally, I will promote my music, because that's ultimately what this podcast has always been about. I am currently planning monthly releases of this podcast. However, when I get the urge, I might release more. And this summer, I have a 10-part series promoting my Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers CD which was officially released 20 years ago. 20 years ago. This is also my 20th year as a podcaster and full-time musician. We're gonna start the year off by counting down 9 bands that you should keep an eye on in 2025 along with some of my favorite songs from the year. But I also hope that you will consider one change to support climate change efforts. Here are three that you can choose from. Just pick one. Buy fewer items with single use plastic Buy from small, local sustainable businesses, that includes bands. Talk to them about album pins and Patreon Together we can make a difference 5:00 - Marc Gunn “Come Adventure With Me” from Come Adventure With Me Vote:  Favorite songs on Come Adventure With Me? 9:28 - UPCOMING SHOWS MAR 1: The Lost Druid Brewery, Avondale Estates, GA @ 6-9 PM MAR 7-9: Cleveland Concoction, Cleveland, OH MAR 15: The Wings Cafe & Tap House, Marietta, GA @ 3-7 PM APR 25-27: Jordan Con, Atlanta, GA JUN 21-28: Celtic Invasion of Wexford, Ireland SEP 24-28: ALEP 6, Harrodsburg, KY Sherwood Forest Faire TBD 10:12 - LATEST NEWS See pictures from my Celtic Invasion of Scotland's Whiskey Merch: Did you listen to the Celtic Top 20 of the 2024 episode of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast? I thought you might appreciate it." Donald W White emailed a photo from Oregon: "I'm painting  -  -  as usual. I've appreciated Celtic music for a long time (loved Fiona Ritchie's former show on NPR  -  "Thistle & Shamrock"), but I just became a fan while sailing from Quebec to Boston. On a cruise ship of "old people," some amazing Canadian musicians (including Nova Scotia vilionist Hayley Ryerson) performed some raucous Celtic tunes from Cape Breton Island. I'm now hooked! Count me in. Don White, A new fan from Oregon " Wolbert van Wageningen emailed: "Hi Marc, My name is Wolbert van Wageningen. I live in the North of the Netherlands. Several years ago I started listening to your Irish and Celtic Music Podcast. I liked it a lot because of all the independent music. But sometimes it was a bit too independent according to my taste. I forgot to listen regularly and it got out of sight and mind. In the meantime I started working (volunteering) at a small regional broadcasting company in my hometown of Winsum. I got the possibility to make my own programmes and one of them I titled " Highlands and Islands" a reference to Scotland of course, but also a reference to the region where I live (het Hogeland  -  Highland) and the Waddensea with small islands. Due to illness I was not able to make the show in our radiostudio, but my homestudio was good enough to make broadcastings. I started broadcasting at Mixcloud and posted my recordings there. Looking for music I discovered your Irish and Celtic Music Podcast at Mixcloud. Nice surprise! Started listening again. Thought it would be nice to reach out to you. Want to make my compliments for your shows and your perseverance in making them. Way back you were in the 100 - 200 range; now almost 700!! I promoted your show to my small group of listeners (Celtic Folk is not that big in the Netherlands) and will do so in the future. Keep up the good work! Kind regards,"

Roy L Hales/Cortes Currents - Bronwyn Claire Asha is bringing her one woman theatre, Celtic folk music and storytelling show to Cortes and Quadra Islands this weekend. She'll be playing in Mansons Hall at 7 PM on Friday, and 7:30 in the Quadra Community Centre on Saturday.
“I am very excited to come to Cortes. I feel like Cortes and Quadra are both small communities that have a real heart to them and a real community connection,” she explained. Cortes Currents: You've also brought some songs for us today.  Tell us about the first one.
Bronwyn Claire Asha: “So the first one is ‘Bridget O'Malley,' which is  a song of lamentation from the 16 hundreds. It's a Scottish folk song. It's originally sung in Scots' Gallic. I talk a lot about longing in the show: longing for connection; longing for belonging; longing for love; longing for adventure. And it's a really beautiful song that I think encapsulates that even just through the melody, but it's also a lot about  imagery and nature that connects you with the beauty of the world. It's a very sad love song as well.”
(Bridget O'Malley inserted 1:28-4:53 in the podcast) Bronwyn Claire Asha: “My music and my performance is about connecting people, community building. And it's not that the audience is not involved. They are very much a participant in the experience. I call upon them to do things. I call upon them to sing with me, to interact with each other so that by the end, we're not separate and we are not individuals sitting in that audience.”
“We're actually a community that have co created this experience together. So I really believe that what has been missing and What we yearn for in this modern age where we're disconnected from each other where we're experiencing The energy of each other through a screen as opposed to in real life when we capitalize on being in the same space together beautiful things can happen and that can happen through listening to really ancient Music and listening to stories that we would have listened to sitting around the campfire thousands of years ago that can help us return to that place where we worked as a community together.”
“We existed very much together, and  we helped each other to survive through joining our voices together in song through sharing stories together and my mission With this performance, with the work that I do, with this character, the bardess, who's the narrator and the guide along the way.”
“It's all about helping us remember what was important and experiencing it again in our own bodies, embodying that feeling to remember that part of us is still there and we're still yearning for connection with each other. And if there's A place we can do that, that's safe, that's a container for us to be together, to go on a journey.”
“We don't know what the destination is, but we know that we're safe and we know that we have each other.  The possibilities are endless and really beautiful. And so far, with this show, I'm experiencing that with my audiences every time. It's like we're, by the end, it's just like I want to give back. Give everyone a big hug  and we're all in it together. It feels very heartwarming at the very end, we sing this final song together that I wrote, but everyone picks up on it so quickly.”  “It's really beautiful to have these experiences where we remember that we're actually all the same, wherever we came from, our ancestors are the same far enough back.  We yearn for the connection with each other and also with the earth. The earth is a big character in this performance as well.”
Cortes Currents: What's your second song?

In the middle of 2019, I got an Irish neighbor who didn't speak a single word of German and asked me for assistance all the time. Luckily, I came across the right online English teacher on Instagram who brought me out of my shell...  I soon realized that I love the English from the south of Ireland the most. It was only a matter of time that I also got in touch with Irish culture and tradition (including the language and music). I even started learning Irish and playing the bodhrán. I'm still a beginner in both (maybe my Irish is already a little better than the drumming, but I only started in November). And since I wanted to find music other than my teacher's to play along with, I googled around. And that's how I stumbled across your podcast. Long story short, I've been fascinated by Celtic music, but even more so since I started learning Irish. I wish one day I could sing some traditional songs in Irish. The Sean Nós singing is so beautiful, too. Wish you a wonderful Christmas wherever you are and keep on making music and all the stuff around it. Nollaig Shona agus slán go fóill!”

I’ll send you a gift of 3 MP3s from the St Patrick’s Day album. Now on sale. -- The Celtfather Story… After reading a whole bunch of marketing material and books, I realize what I love about marketing. Great marketing is about telling a story that resonates. I LOVE stories. It’s something I’m trying to get better at. It’s why I’m trying to rebrand the Pub Songs Podcast as Pub Songs & Stories. Because, sure, I love to sing for you. But I would also like to share stories. So today, I’m gonna share a couple stories… and music from bands on the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. But it’s really about the story. Because every song I write, every email or blog I try to sculpt is about telling a good story. I didn’t want Pirates vs. Dragons to just be songs. I wanted a story to go with it. Thanks to Rie Sheridan Rose, the songwriter and author of that story, we did just that. My Firefly songs aren’t just about characters in the TV show, they’re the stories that were created by my experience within the show and outside of it. Like “Breathing”. I could’ve just written a song using words about trying to breathe. Or I could make it personal. “Breathing” was inspired by the episode “Out of Gas”. The ship, Serenity, breaks down in space, far from civilization. A compression coil blows, knocking out life support and injuring Zoe. As Simon fights to save Zoe’s life in the medical bay, Kaylee stands outside worried for both Zoe and the ship. It’s not running. It’s no longer creating air. She’s in shock. Mal gets her attention and asks, “you wanna keep breathin’ doncha?” That’s the line that started my song. But it really plays a small role outside of creating a great call and response. I decided to look back into a period of my life when I was having trouble with my relationships. I felt like I was screwing up all the time. Every time, I screwed up I spiraled further down. I questioned myself constantly. I was depressed. What helped me through it was meditation and breathing. My Apple Watch has a breathing app. I used it all the time. I started taking 20 minute meditation breaks to just calm myself and relax. It helped. Slowly, I pulled myself back up. I found my happy place again. So when I wrote “Breathing”, I tied the experiences of the crew in that episode with my own life to create a fictional story of how to overcome stress, and how to give a spark of life a troubled relationship. I wrote a story on how to find your happy place again. It just takes a little breathing. 6:22 - SONG: “Breathing” from Selcouth (With special guest Kenzie Gunn) 10:42 - TRAVEL WITH CELTIC INVASION VACATIONS. We are sharing St Patrick’s Day stories like St Patrick probably never drank green beer. No really. A deeper look at my Selcouth song “Breathing”. A love story from na Skylark. Join the invasion at http://celticinvasion.com/   10:31 - TOP 10 CELTIC BANDS FOR ST PATRICK’S DAY 2021 St Patrick’s Day is just around the corner. I love to read blogs and articles about Celtic music around St Patrick’s Day. But every year, it’s the exact same songs. IrishCentral is notorious for publishing a blog about the top 10 Celtic bands for St Patrick’s Day. It’s the same ones as always: The Dubliners, The Chieftains, The Clancy Brothers, The Pogues. All are great, but then they throw in U2, The Cranberries and Van Morrison. Don’t get me wrong. I enjoy all of that music as much as the next Celtic music lover. But they will write for 2021 and use bands from 1968. I’m sorry. But times change. There are so many great Celtic bands. I think it’s a shame to settle on those bands when I’m gonna share with you my pick of the Best Celtic Bands FOR St Patrick’s Day 2021. As you probably know, I also host the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. It’s an hour-long show of Celtic music by the best independent Celtic bands online. Every year, I make MY PICK of the best Celtic bands based primarily on how much I played their music in the podcast. You can read my pick in a blog on my website of the Top 10 Celtic Bands of 2020. Let’s get started. #10 Runa RUNA continues to push the boundaries of Irish folk music into the Americana and roots music formats. Interweaving the haunting melodies and exuberant tunes of Ireland and Scotland with the lush harmonies and intoxicating rhythms of jazz, bluegrass, flamenco and blues, they offer a thrilling and redefining take on traditional music. They've been a favorite of mine for many years now. And I highly recommend their album TEN: The Errant Night. What a great album! #9 Skeleton McKee Skeleton McKee brings the best of rock and rollicking Celtic roots/folk/rock, pub songs, and a wee bit of trad, blues and Americana. This band keeps your toes tapping and your hands clapping with a dose of humor on the side. Skeleton McKee has made a big impact on the DFW Celtic music scene, with Celtic infused entertainment featuring great vocal harmonies, precision instrumentation and intricate rhythms. Skeleton McKee comprises jovial, experienced musicians who combine impressively diverse backgrounds to deliver the cream of the Celtic tradition. Once you experience a live show, you’ll know why their slogan is: “All For Fun and Fun For All!” #8 An Lar An Lár (the center in Irish Gaelic) is one of the most vibrant Celtic Folk bands in Switzerland. They play original songs and tunes inspired by folk music from Ireland and Scotland and one can also note influences from places like Asturias and Brittany. Exciting arrangements, strong lead vocals and considerable skill on a wide range of instruments are typical features of the band. #7. Lissa Schneckenburger The down beat slams your body as the song grabs you and surges forward. You lean in to hear every word, as Schneckenburger’s voice sweetly sets the scene and then brings it to a boil, careening around each detail. The song ends before you’re ready, leaving you breathless with your heart thumping in your ears. You reach forward and hit repeat. Raised in a small town in Maine and now living in Vermont, Schneckenburger grew up with music. She began playing fiddle at the age of six, inspired by her parent’s interest in folk music. In 2001 she graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music with a degree in Contemporary Improvisation. She has been performing and teaching music around the world ever since. One of the things that I love so much about Celtic music is the diversity of people. In case you didn’t know, Schneckenburger is not an Irish or Scottish name. But who cares. Because every time I start looking for great Celtic music, I end up picking her. 14:57 - Lissa Schneckenburger “Lamplighter's Hornpipe / Suffer the Child” from Dance 17:41 - TOP TEN (cont.) #6 Barleyjuice With six studio albums and a double CD collection in their sporrans to date, Barleyjuice have made themselves one of the most beloved celtic rock bands in the US. Frontman Kyf Brewer pens the majority of the group’s originals and lithely covers lead vocals, guitar, accordion, harmonica, mandolin, bouzouki, piano and bagpipes. He originally piped in the Loch Rannoch Pipe Band, and performed in Edinburgh’s Millennium March for Prince Charles. Backing Brewer is a mad quartet of characters: guitar virtuoso Chris “Shep” Shepherd handles mandolin & conventional electric & acoustic guitars with his trademark flair and panache; captivating fiddler Kyle Blessing’s classical roots stray to bluegrass and country in the middle of the most authentic jigs & hornpipes; drummer Bogi Trifunovich is a powerhouse of driving decadence, while hopping bassist Eric Worthington is the musical snake-charmer of the deep and dulcet. The ayes have it – Barleyjuice is a grand group of talented tunesmiths and prodigious performers, and the absolute best time you can have at a concert without removing your kilt. #5 Ockham's Razor Ockham's Razor creates a musical experience, not just a gig. They are a young, energetic band with Celtic roots that blends rock, bluegrass, gypsy, classical, pop and punk influences throughout their music. They include the audience in the show by getting off stage, into the audience and getting them dancing, singing along to the songs and breaking down that 4th wall that many bands put up between themselves and the audience. This creates a memorable experience for the audience instead of a forgettable evening of “Who was that band?” The Yakima Folklife Festival described their sound as “Turbo-Celtic” and “Ethno-Punk”. Interview with Kris of Ockham’s Razor on Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. #4 Screaming Orphans Screaming Orphans are four sisters with the good fortune to have been raised in the magic of Bundoran in County Donegal, Ireland.  There is a great tradition of music to be found in Irish homes especially in the Gaeltacht or Irish-speaking areas which have produced the likes of Clannad, Enya and Mairead, Micheal and Triona Ni Dhomhnaill. Their home was no exception. Since they were young, they’ve been singing and playing traditional Irish music but when they hit their teenage years they knew it was time to start their own pop rock band. 21:25 - Screaming Orphans “Every Woman Gardens” from Sunshine & Moss 24:28 - TOP TEN (cont.) #3 The Selkie Girls Originally formed in 2013, The Selkie Girls have firmly established themselves as a mainstay in the North Texas folk music scene. With dozens of music and art festivals under their belt, as well as numerous television appearances, the band has toured throughout the States, never failing to captivate audiences with their unique instrumentation, lush harmonies, and dynamic arrangements. The band (Alli Johnson: vocals/guitar, Jaycie Skidmore: vocals/flutes/penny whistles, Dave Ervin: vocals/guitar/mandolin, Joel Black: upright and fretless acoustic bass, Martin McCall: percussion, and Linda Mudd: harp) draws upon a vast repertoire of ancient and contemporary ballads, traditional Irish and Scottish songs (often sung in the native tongue), and foot-stomping jigs and reels, creating a truly eclectic and affecting musical experience. #2 Jiggy Jiggy continue the tradition of their musical ancestors while bringing a whole new exotic flavor to the table, more of a collective than an orthodox band, Jiggy’s mercurial line up mixes and melds Irish traditional music, world rhythms and cutting-edge dance grooves. Jiggy took the internet by storm with their video ‘Silent Place’ celebrating the global togetherness of dance and to date it has clocked up more than 35 million views. This has introduced the band to a brand new audience worldwide and their debut album TRANSLATE went to number 1 in the world music charts in Ireland, United States, Canada, France, Australia, Poland & UK and they are now a big hit with festival audiences across the globe. #1 We Banjo 3 Debuting in the U.S. in 2012, We Banjo 3 has since emerged as fast-rising touring darlings in the country that two of the members now call home. The Galway, Ireland, and Nashville-based quartet––comprised of two sets of brothers, Enda & Fergal Scahill and Martin & David Howley––continually push musical boundaries while maintaining an unwavering devotion to the essential audience experience. WB3 seamlessly converge the shared and varied traditions of Americana, Bluegrass, and Celtic music with pop-sensible songcraft to create a truly unique and gratifying signature sound. Brilliantly commanded instruments––banjo, fiddle, mandolin, guitar, and percussion––effortlessly elevate lead singer David Howley’s propulsive voice. Live on stage, their songs carry the listener along until, at the perfect moment, the band crescendos into catchy choruses with pitch perfect harmonies. We Banjo 3 deliver their music with such palpable rapport, stunning precision, and infectious energy, it’s impossible to pigeonhole what kind of listener might suddenly consider themselves a WB3 fan. 28:45 - We Banjo 3 “Happiness” from String Theory -- New Irish & Celtic Song Lyrics. I updated the lyrics for all of the songs I sing in this show. You will find lyrics and chords so you can play along with me. Marianna Filippi, a bright young composer from Maine, is at her core, a storyteller. Composing for theater and film as well as chamber groups and solo artists, Marianna's music is proving popular with performers and audiences alike. Beginning with improvisation to form her initial melodic and harmonic material, she lets her work evolve organically, like a good piece of prose. Rich with celtic and japanese folk influences, and inspired by stories and abstract images, Marianna's tone painting draws you in to a poetic world full of oracles, falling feathers, heroic trials, jeweled beetles with shimmering wings, and planets coming into alignment. We feel like the planets must have been in lucky alignment to bring Marianna Filippi to the Composer's Studio.

Email a voicemail message to celticpodcast@gmail.com Henry Meger emailed: "Dia dhuit, Marc, I discovered your podcast last spring and have been entranced and charmed with it ever since as I catch up to date. Just wanted to send some personal thanks. My father has been playing Celtic guitar for most of his life and all of mine, so it's been in the house since day one. I thought I had heard it all, each corner and subgenre to be found, but my library has been greatly and duly humbled by your extensive and seasoned pallet. I've shared the podcast and many of its contents with my dad, and it has enriched our Celtic cosmos remarkably. I took the podcast with me last summer while studying abroad in Russia and it was a wonderful way to keep in touch with my roots during my commute. Having also spent time in non-Celtic Spain, the Galicia episode opened another door in my musical conception of Iberia. In short, Thank you!! An amateur flute player myself, I would love to hear a flute-heavy episode, and I'm sure all musicians who listen to the podcast would love their own instrument-themed episodes. Just a thought that has crossed my mind (not that you don't have plenty already!) Keep up the fantastic work---it's very much appreciated!" Thank you Henry. I haven't done a flute or whistle episode. Let me see what I can put together. I wish I had an easy way to search my archive for flute music. Sadly, I don't. But perhaps I can reach out to you and all my listeners. If you have heard some bands with flute or whistle, please email me the band names so I can make a possible list of the podcast. Jennifer Lohman emailed a picture: "While I am listening to your podcast from Terra Alta, WV (USA) 31 degrees here today-so the dogs & I are staying in." Stephen Reimann emailed: "Dear Celt Father, I am a big fan of your show and what you are doing to add breadth and depth to those who listen to Celtic music. I am an Account Manager for a major Pharmaceutical company which requires an extensive amount of driving.  By extensive I mean on average 60K miles each year.  Your podcast enables me to not only pass the time driving between accounts, but also increase my knowledge and love of all things musically Irish and Celtic.  The theme diversity of your shows is stellar.  Just like Christopher Walken’s SNL character, The Bruce Dickinson, needed “More Cowbell,” I need more bagpipes.  Any chance of another Bagpipe theme’d show in the near future? Thank you for all you do to sharpen our proverbial musical sgian-dubhs." Stephen “Bow Tie Steve” Reimann (Rye-man) Thanks Bow Tie Steve. Yeah. You can never have enough bagpipes. It will have to be a few months, but I'll add that to the list as well. Maybe I should add both this and the flute show as milestones... Would you be interested in another bagpipe show as well. Drop me a line.

Band: Ginger Ackley Homepage: http://www.gingerackley.com   Description: Ginger's music is Celtic – with at Twist!  A Texas native happily transplanted to Ohio, Ginger has taken her life-long passion for music, combined it with a love of history and tradition, and mixed it all  into a delightful style of Celtic Folk. Performing both traditional and original songs, she sings while accompanying herself on one of her six autoharps, or  jams with other folks  on her penny whistles. She has been described as a songwriter “in the old style,"  and her most recent album “The Elf King's Horn" reaches into the magical and new age music!   Personal Fact: Before I really started singing outside of a small set of friends, I traveled on a cruise in 2005 with Danny O'Flaherty and his Celtic group.  They had a song writing contest among the group where the song had to be about leaving one place to go to another.  It had to be upbeat and positive.  The judges of the contest were Danny O'Flaherty, Danny Doyle, Andy M. Stewart and Aoife Clancy.  There in the middle of the Caribbean, I wrote "It Is Time" which won the contest.  I've never stopped playing and writing music since!   Newest CD: The Elf King's Horn Year Released: 2015   You can subscribe to the show at www.celtfather.com where you can join my mailing list to download a free album of my Celtic geek music. An Taisdeal (pron.: An Tahshdel, Scots Gaelic for "The Journey") is a Celtic Folk project from Germany. Originally founded by Rüdiger Reinhardt in 2002 with Anna Molitor on the fiddle, the project was put on ice, as he moved away in 2005, and playing together was no longer possible. "The Journey" can be seen as a journey through the celtic countries, where the songs are originated, through history, which is told in the songs, and also as a journey for the audience, on which the listeners embark at a gig. The songs are in English, Irish Gaelic, Scottish Gaelic and also Breton language. An Taisdeal is not a real band, but rather a project with friends as occasional guest musicians. You never know who you might meet on your travels. Some recordings of the songs on the "home recordings" album are more than 10 years old, but never really made their way into public. It is being proposed by Stansfilm, who are now seeking backers for the project. "Over the past few years attempts have been made to revive the series but unfortunately failed. Now, in 2011, a script has been written by Richard Carpenter and plans are being made to bring back Robin of Sherwood... Stansfilm are presently heading an attempt to bring this series back to your screens... ...but we need YOUR help to make it happen!" Find out more on the Stansfilm website.   Song of Solstice by Jennifer Cutting's Ocean Orchestra What a wonderful way to start the show! Jennifer Cutting and her Ocean Orchestra bring us the title track to her new album, Song of Solstice. This rousing Celtic Folk track is a brilliant example of the high quality of foot-stomping music that you can expect from Jenifer and the crew! You can find out more about Jennifer and the Ocean Orchestra on their website at Ocean Orchestra or on our Contributor Page.   The Traditions of Yule and the Yule Log collected by Ruthie In this piece, we talk about the Holly and the Oak Kings, Holly & Mistletoe, Santa Claus' Reindeer, Herne the Hunter and the symbolism of the Stag and deer. We then go on to examine the origins and traditions of the Yule Log in much more detail. Much of the detail came from [Wiki].   The Wheel By Damh the Bard Damh is a modern-day Bard whose spirituality, and love of folk tradition, is expressed through his music, storytelling and poetry. Drawing on the Bardic traditions his performances are both entertaining and educational, weaving a tapestry of myth, peace, and anthems that speak directly to the heart, but never without a good splash of humour. You can find his music on iTunes, or from his website, Pagan Music. He is also the voice behind Druidcast, the official podcast of the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids (OBOD, for short) - modern day Druids. . You can find Druidcast here and find out more about OBOD hereYou can find out more details about Damh on his Contributor Page on our website.   The "Spirit of Albion: the Movie" Trailer We talk about the new trailer for the movie, The Spirit of Albion. You'll be able to see this on our website if it does not show above.     The Woodcutter's Poem by Mother Goose We bring you a lovely poem purportedly from Mother Goose that teaches children about the best logs to burn for a good winter fire. Although, We couldn't find a direct link the source for this is minogue.com. The full version of Mother Goose can be found at Project Gutenberg. We also found it at Legendary Dartmoor under the name of a Dartmoor Log Poem. It has long been a traditional English folk song as can be found at the Traditional Music website.    We're also proud to accompany this poem with Anne Roos' wonderful track The Gold Ring (details in the credits at the bottom).   A Fire Fit for a Queen by Cernunnos Rising George Nicholas and Cernunnos Rising bring us a unique blend of new age, Celtic, pagan, druidic music, featuring evocative songs with deep and well crafted lyrics; reminding us of a living tradition that explores the mysticism of trees, the waters, the air that we breathe, the seen and the unseen and delicate balance in all things.   In this show you can hear his song, A Fire Fit for A Queen from the album Wild Soul, which carries on the wonderful traditions of logs and wood that we've been talking about in this show. You can find out more about Cernunnos Rising on their website or on their Contributor Page. Midwinter Story by Chris Joliffe Astoundingly, Chris is an undiscovered talent - that is, until now! This amazing bard has given us permission to use some of his amazing stories and poems in the show and we're sure that you'll love them just as much as we do. In this show, you can hears his wonderfully evocative, Midwinter Story. We hope to bring you much more of Chris in the future and in the meantime check out his Contributor Page to find out a little more about him.   Hymn to Herne by S. J. Tucker Critics describe S.J. Tucker's music as the perfect mix of witty and weighty, and she takes listeners on a fantastic, genre-hopping ride with just her voice, her guitar, and occasionally a drum. Fans of all ages come to see SJ Tucker for more than just the stories she weaves into her songwriting -- her musical talents are second to none. Her style is classified, at times, as "Celtic Blues", while her instrumental and vocal talents earn comparisons to Joni Mitchell, Ani DiFranco, Dar Williams, and Jeff Buckley. Not confined to one type of song or another, SJ spans opera, chant, and rockergrrl, employing deft guitar hands and the bluesy, powerful voice of a 300lb gospel singer--finely contained in a petite frame which earned her first band the name 'Skinny White Chick' by accident. We are really proud to bring you her Hymn to Herne from her album Blessings, a powerful, blood-pounding evocation of atavistic force. You can find out more about Sooj on her website at sjtucker.com or on her Contributor Page.    The Wild Hunt We talk about the belief in the Wild Hunt, or Raging Host. Fairies, the dead, or a historical, legendary figure? We also talk about Hunt leaders, such as Herne the Hunter, Gwyn ap Nudd and his white hounds and the Herlathing.   Promo - The Amber Treasure by Richard Denning Cerdic is the nephew of a great warrior who died a hero of the Anglo-Saxon country of Deira. Growing up in a quiet village, he dreams of the glories of battle and of one day writing his name into the sagas. He experiences the true horrors of war, however, when his home is attacked, his sister kidnapped, his family betrayed and his uncle's legendary sword stolen.  Cerdic is thrown into the struggles that will determine the future of 6th century Britain and must show courageous leadership and overcome treachery, to save his kingdom, rescue his sister and return home with his uncle's sword. The Amber Treasure is Historical Fiction set in Dark Age Northumbria and can be found on Podiobooks.com.   Solstice Evergreen by Spiral Dance Multi-award winning group Spiral Dance, based in Adelaide, has been playing rousing, high-energy music to enthusiastic audiences throughout Australia and beyond for over a decade. The richly-textured and powerful song Solstice Evergreen, recalls ancient times with a powerful driving force that reminds us that the spirit is still very much alive today. Amazing song! You can find out more about Spiral Dance on their website or on their Contributor Page. Email garyandruth@celticmythpodshow.com, or leave us a message using Speakpipe   The Festival of the Fires Our fabulous news item introduces the Festival of Fires which is a resuscitation of the ancient fires of Tara that were lit on the Hill of Uisneach and the taken from County to County to ignite all of the fires in Ireland. Originally known as Bealtaine, the summertime festival was an important fixture on the worldwide calendar, attracting attendees from the four corners of the ancient world. Having not being officially celebrated in hundreds of years the festival is to return, rising from the ashes of the Bealtaine name as Festival of the Fires. It promises to be an event unlike anything ever witnessed in modern times - an iconic national celebration to truly ignite the summer. Created through the alchemy of ceremony, heritage, music, theatre, literature, arts, crafts, poetry, holistic health and sustainability.  Festival of the Fires will feature the collective talents of hundreds of participants drawn from all over Ireland and the world, gathering at the exact centre-point of Ireland to celebrate the onset of summer. One of the ceremonial highlights of the festival will be the lighting of a national fire, ignited first on the summit of Uisneach and then carried to hilltops in every one of Ireland's 32 counties. In ancient times, this sacred Uisneach fire was the catalyst for coast-to-coast celebrations with festivals and gatherings taking place in the fire sites, and in the communities below. You can find out more about the festival on the website at http://festivalofthefires.com/.   Twa Corbies by Damh the Bard A classic folk track, the Twa Corbies or 'two crows', given the Damh the Bard magical treatment for the new Crowman album.   Damh the Bard Interview (Pronounced 'Dave') Damh is a musical storyteller who works within the world of myth that cannot be proved; where the Faerie really do dance on Midsummer's Eve, where the trees talk, and the Hollow Hills take you into the realms of Annwn. Where the Goddess rides her horse, guiding you to magic, and the Horned God of old calls us from the shadows of the Greenwood. [source] Damh is also the relaxed voice behind Druidcast, the podcast from the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids (OBOD). You can find out more about Damh and his work on his website at paganmusic.co.uk or on our Contributor Page.   Blodeuwedd by Damh the Bard The tale of Blodeuwedd taken by Damh from the Fourth Branch of the Mabinogi.   The Cauldon Born by Damh the Bard The Story of Cerridwen and how we are all, in a fashion, Cerridwen's Children, or "the Cauldron Born".   Pagan Spirit Gathering The Pagan Spirit Gathering (PSG) is one of America's oldest and largest Nature Spirituality festivals. Since its inception in 1980, PSG has been bringing together hundreds of people from throughout the United States, plus other countries, to create community, celebrate Summer Solstice, and commune with Nature in a sacred environment. Sponsored by Circle Sanctuary, PSG is open to long-time practitioners as well as newcomers of a wide range of Nature religion traditions, including Wiccan, Contemporary Pagan, Druidic, Heathen, Celtic, Baltic, Greco-Roman, Isian, Shamanic, Hermetic, Animistic, Egyptian, Native American, Afro-Carribean, Taoist, Pantheistic, Ecofeminist, and Nature Mystic. PSG is an opportunity for personal renewal, networking, education, and cultural enrichment. You can see their musical line-up (including Damh) or book tickets on their website.   Cerri Lee Cerri Lee is a multi-talented visionary artist who can turn her hand to almost anything creative. She is inspired by nature, and the ancient Pagan myths and legends of many cultures, her beliefs as a modern day Druid as well as those around her. She can create anything from Rights of Passage gifts and altar pieces to wedding and birthday gifts, and will happily take on commissions. Each piece of artwork she creates is individual and can be personalised to you or your loved ones. Her artwork has been used for album covers, featured in leading Pagan magazines, used as tattoos, and her sculptures are sent throughout the world. Cerri is equally in her element when she is up to her elbows in clay or painting one of her fabulous pictures. She is partner to Druid musician and long-time supporter of our show, Damh the Bard and can be found supporting him at many of his performances. You can see a gallery of Cerri's artist work on our website at Cerri's Gallery and you can find out more about Cerri and her work on her website on cerrilee.com or on our Contributor page.   Grimspound by Damh the Bard Grimspound is a late Bronze Age settlement high on the moor. It’s surrounded by a large fallen stone wall, and inside you can still see the remains of the roundhouses. On a beautiful day it is incredibly peaceful, but on a typical Dartmoor day, with the wind and the rain, it must have been a harsh place to live. "I sat with my guitar inside the remains of one of the roundhouses and just began to play on the guitar – looking around, breathing in the history of the place, imagining it full of life. What kind of people lived there. A Raven called overhead, and I felt I could see torchlight on the Tors either side of me. Voices of the Ancestors singing. The Land singing. And the melody of the guitar began to take shape. A ghostly and reflective refrain."   Competition Damh left us with a signed copy of his latest album, Tales from the Crowman, to give away as a competition prize. So, we set a competition based on Welsh Mythology for you.   Spirit of Albion by Damh the Bard Damh plays us his rousing anthem, a paean of praise to the land, Spirit of Albion from the album of the same name.   Get EXTRA content in the Celtic Myth Podshow App for iOS, Android & Windows Contact Us: You can leave us a message by using the Speakpipe Email us at: garyandruth@celticmythpodshow.com. Their vibrant pipe tunes and drum rhythms please, and excite, many a crowd from all walks of life. Still holding onto their unique sound and style they continue to combine old roots and new blood. Once again Saor Patrol has brought to you their very own Celtabilly music. Aftermath (Blar-Nan-Leine 1544) Battle of the Field of Shirts The Battle of Kinloch-Lochy, also known as the Battle of the Shirts or Blar na Léine, was a 1544 battle in Scotland, fought between branches of the Clan Donald, with the involvement of their allies the Clan Cameron against the Clan Fraser, led by Fraser of Lovat, who was aided by members of Clan Grant. The site was on Loch Lochy. [wiki]. See also Clan Cameron's description. The Clanranald Trust Duncarrow All of the members of Saor Patrol are deeply involved in Charity Work, starting the Clanranald Trust. They say: Our ultimate aim is to replicate a medieval Motte and Bailey Fort as an interactive educational visitor attraction (See more at DunCarron). The idea behind the project is to provide an arena in which groups, individuals and school parties can experience the atmosphere of an authentic medieval working community. Once completed the Trust intend to use this development as a centre from which to base their work with the local community and educational institutions, whilst also offering a great forum for companies to entertain clients and employees alike. The Film and TV industries will also find the project useful as a “set”. See their Myspace page and hear more music or visit their homepage, Saor Patrol. You can find out more details about Saor Patrol on their Contributor Page on our website. Guitar and piano blended like a vintage whisky. And those lyrics; at once verbose and precise. Aural sketches of the persistent low cloud in John’s North Western home town, but Hungry Bentley also make time to notice the single shaft of sunlight breaking through, illuminating the Cemetery Gates. Songs of love, songs of joy, songs of hope to make you smile and dream and weep. This track is a collaboration between John of the Hungry Bentleys and Irish poet Nigel McLoughlin. Nigel McLoughlin is the author of four collections of poetry, the latest of which is Dissonances (bluechrome, 2007). You can find the Hungry Bentleys on Myspace. You can find out more details about Nigel on his Myspace page or about them both on their Contributor Page on our website.   Ravenwolf by Kelly Heckart In this, the second contribution from Celtic Romance author Kelley Heckart, Ravenwolf takes the reader on a journey to an ancient land filled with spiteful goddesses who threaten to tear Ambiorix and Nemu apart. To protect his family from harm, Ambiorix has no choice but to join the Roman Army, once again commanding a cavalry unit, and torn between the soldier inside and being a husband and father. Nemu must confront a past life that is filled with betrayal, loss and revenge. As her past life collides with her present life, she finds herself trapped in the Celtic Underworld by a god who was once obsessed with her when she was known as Becuille. You can visit Kelley Heckart's website or find out much more about her and where to get her books on our Contributor Page.   Song of the Sea by Sharon Knight Alive with soulful longing, passionate hope, and vivid imagery, the music of Sharon Knight is a journey into the otherworldly mists of a timeless land, filled with brave heroes, epic love, and mythical quests. For more than 10 years, the San Francisco Celtic songstress has been performing and recording her unique musical vision as both a solo artist and fronting the world-rock fusion band Pandemonaeon. Her voice is strong and soulful, with a hint of vulnerability, and her striking poetry is set to lush instrumentation reminiscent of Loreena McKennitt’s work. Sharon has also been favorably compared with Fairport Convention, Stevie Nicks, and Tori Amos. Sharon can be found on Myspace, but Sharon's own website, Sharon Knight: Music, Myth & Magic is a beautifully designed tour de force about Sharon and her work. You can find out more about Sharon on her Contributor Page on our website.    Feedback We talk about the inspiration that Dave Jackson of the School of Podcasting has given us as regards making our website more useable by the Visually Impaired on Show 155.
