If plans don't always pan out, how can we best prepare for the future? In this episode, Rich sits down with Dr. Frederik G. Pferdt who was Google's first Chief Innovation Evangelist and is now a Stanford educator and an Executive-in-Residence and Visiting Fellow at NYU Stern. In this conversation, he shares insights into how to ritualize and embody cultural values, how to prepare for the future and the power of choosing to show up.---------Key Quotes: “Instead of planning, we should invest more in preparing. Because planning is usually external. It's timelines, it's spreadsheets, it's steps, it's milestones, all of those things. But preparing is internal. It's your mind state, it's your emotional readiness to adapt.”“ Innovation is a permission problem, not an idea problem. People don't need more creativity. They need more psychological safety to use it.” ”If you wanna create an environment for innovation, I would recommend using rituals and not rules. Rituals are sticky and they're human… Leaders have specific values in an organization that they wanna activate, bring to life. I think rituals are the best way to actually do that.” Practice Makes Profit: Making collaboration seamless by assessing alignment.League of Strategic Minds [listener question]:    What strategy myths hold organizations back from being more successful?Winsights: Ideas for Advantage:     Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, said, “I bet 70 percent of the innovation we do focuses on slightly improving a process. That incremental invention is a huge part of what makes Amazon tick.” Do you and your team have a process to stimulate innovative thinking throughout the year so that you're always providing new value to your customers? Welcome to the What's Next! Podcast with Tiffani Bova.  This week, I'm excited to welcome Frederik Pferdt to the show. He's the former Chief Innovation Evangelist at Google where he helped shape one of the most fabled creative cultures in the world. He founded Google's Innovation Lab, where he trained tens of thousands of Googlers to develop and experiment with cutting-edge ideas and taught groundbreaking classes on innovation and creativity at Stanford for more than a decade. He has a new book out called What's Next Is Now: How to Live Future Ready. THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… anyone eager to learn how to proactively create their future and develop a growth-oriented mindset. TODAY'S MAIN MESSAGE… in this inspiring conversation, Frederik dives into what it means to live future-ready. He believes we each have the power to intentionally shape the future instead of waiting for it to happen. Frederik introduces his six principles that help shift to this way of thinking.  Key Takeaways: The future isn't something that happens to you. You have the power to create it.  We talk a lot about mindset, but Frederik introduces the idea of “mindstate” and our ability to influence a moment.  When you pay attention to your choices throughout your day and week, you'll quickly notice that your future isn't predetermined but something you're actively creating.  Some situations are out of our control, but we can always control our responses and outlook.  WHAT I LOVE MOST… the sixth principle, Dimension X, or your superpower. Discovering your strengths takes time, reflection, and sometimes courage, but when you incorporate them into the way you see the future, you're able to impact the world in a unique way.    Running Time: 27:13   Subscribe on iTunes   Find Tiffani Online: LinkedIn Facebook X   Find Frederik Online: LinkedIn NextLetter   Frederik's Book: What's Next Is Now: How to Live Future Ready

Limited-time discount available – don't miss out!   If you don't actively shape your future, it will be shaped for you. This is the core message Dr. Frederik G. Pferdt wants you to understand. To take control of your future, start by developing a "future ready" mindset. Cultivate optimism, openness, curiosity, a willingness to experiment, and empathy. Dr. Pferdt introduces an important concept: your "mind state." Unlike fixed mindsets, your mind state is your perception in each moment, and it's something you can change and control. By working on your mind state, you can alter how you experience and interact with the world around you. Shaping your future is also about your environment. Dr. Pferdt emphasizes the importance of intentionally designing your physical spaces to support your aspirations. Your surroundings significantly influence your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors; Make sure they align with the future you're trying to create.   Dr. Frederik G. Pferdt, a pioneer in innovation and creativity, served as Google's inaugural Chief Innovation Evangelist and taught at Stanford University for over a decade. His visionary approach to living "future-ready" has been adopted by diverse organizations from the UN to NASA. With his work featured in over 250 media outlets worldwide, Dr. Pferdt's insights on shaping a better tomorrow are set to reach an even broader audience through his upcoming book, "What's Next Is Now – How to Live Future Ready."   Takeaways  Future Readiness Mindset: The most impactful way to shape your future is to focus on who you want to become, rather than external factors or material goals. This involves cultivating a mindset of optimism, openness, curiosity, experimentation, and empathy. The Power of Visualization and Future Self: Regularly visualizing and connecting with your desired future self can have a profound impact on achieving your goals. This practice helps align your current actions with your future aspirations. Emotions in Innovation: Innovation is deeply tied to emotions. Understanding and effectively managing the emotional roller coaster of excitement, disappointment, frustration, and humility is crucial for successful innovation and creativity. Situated Cognition and Environmental Design: Your physical environment significantly influences your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Intentionally designing your spaces to support your desired future state can have a powerful effect on your ability to achieve your goals and live "future ready".   Sponsors:    Greenlight:    Empower your kids with financial wisdom and security. Welcome to episode #946 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast - Episode #946. Dr. Frederik Pferdt has spent his career helping some of the most creative minds at Google - and beyond - shape the future. As Google's first Chief Innovation Evangelist, he didn't just observe the future unfolding; he actively shaped it. Frederik founded Google's Innovation Lab, where he coached tens of thousands of Googlers in the art of innovation, fostering a culture that thrives on curiosity, empathy, and experimentation. His work has resonated far beyond Silicon Valley, with collaborations ranging from NASA to the NBA, and teaching stints at Stanford University that inspired a new generation of thinkers. In his book, What's Next Is Now - How to Live Future Ready, Frederik challenges the notion that the future is something we passively encounter. Instead, he invites us to see it as something we actively create. He distills his philosophy into six principles: optimism, openness, curiosity, experimentation, empathy, and something he calls "Dimension X" - the unique way each of us perceives the world. This isn't just a framework for surviving the future; it's a guide to thriving in it. During our conversation, Frederik dives into how these principles aren't just abstract concepts but actionable strategies that anyone can apply. He emphasizes that the future is crafted by the choices we make today, and by cultivating a "future-ready mindstate," we can turn ambiguity and uncertainty into opportunities. From collecting dots — ideas, experiences, and learnings — to connecting them in innovative ways, Frederik explains how we can stay ahead in a rapidly evolving world. Frederik also touches on the importance of predictive empathy, which helps us understand the potential consequences of emerging technologies, and how embracing uncertainty is crucial for personal growth. He shares insights on how to counter the cynicism that often accompanies aging by intentionally choosing curiosity and optimism. Our discussion explores the transformative power of mindfulness practices like silent meditation retreats and the value of experimentation in cutting through the hype of the present moment. In this episode of the Duct Tape Marketing Podcast, I interviewed Dr. Frederik Pferdt, the first Chief Innovation Evangelist at Google and a renowned expert on innovation and creativity. Frederik Pferdt helped shape one of the most fabled creative cultures in the world. He founded Google's Innovation Lab, where he trained tens of thousands of Googlers to develop and experiment with cutting-edge ideas and taught ground-breaking classes on innovation and creativity at Stanford University for more than a decade. He has also worked with dozens of international government agencies, organizations, and businesses ranging from the United Nations to NASA to the NBA. His work has been highlighted in Fast Company, Harvard Business Manager, Der Spiegel, and BBC news, among many other media outlets. Dr. Pferdt shares his insights on how not just optimism but radical optimism can transform our relationship with the future, helping us create a world we want to live in.   Key Takeaways The key to thriving in an uncertain world lies in embracing radical optimism. He explains that radical optimism is about more than just seeing the glass as half full; it's about looking for ways to fill the glass even further. By shifting our perspective (state of mind) to focus on possibilities and opportunities, we can transform challenges into chances for growth. Dr. Pferdt emphasizes the importance of changing our mindset to a "mind state" – a fluid, adaptable approach to thinking that can be adjusted based on immediate circumstances. This helps individuals become more resilient and proactive in the face of change, rather than being overwhelmed by it. He also highlights the role of compulsive curiosity in driving business innovation and personal growth. By continuously questioning and seeking to learn more about the world around us, we can stay ahead of changes and better prepare for the future. This curiosity, paired with unreserved openness to new ideas and experiences, can lead to unexpected and rewarding opportunities. In this episode, Dr. Pferdt offers practical advice on how to cultivate radical optimism and develop a future-ready mindset. He shares personal stories and examples from his work at Google and Stanford University, illustrating how these concepts can be applied in real-world scenarios to achieve remarkable results. Dr. Pferdt's insights provide valuable guidance for anyone looking to gain freedom from the fear of the future and thrive in an ever-changing world. By adopting a proactive approach to the future, we can create a future we desire, rather than waiting passively for it to unfold. In our latest episode, we're thrilled to have Dr. Frederik G. Pferdt, Google's first Chief Innovation Evangelist and the creative mind behind Google's Innovation Lab. Listen as Dr. Frederik shares his journey through one of the tech world's most legendary creative cultures. Frederik dives deep into his philosophies on innovation and creativity, nurtured over a decade through his pioneering work at Google and teaching at Stanford's d.School. He talks about the concept of being a Catalyst in environments resistant to change and how his sustainably focused life in the Santa Cruz Mountains influences his approach to living and leading. With insights that have shaped entities from the UN to NASA, Frederik's strategies for embracing and driving change are not just compelling—they are transformative and focused on the personal journey of being a change maker. His upcoming book, "What's Next is Now: How to Live Future Ready," promises to be an essential personal journey guide for change makers looking to confidently tackle future challenges while embodying the attributes needed to realize positive change. Instead of asking ourselves or those around us “What do you want to be in the future?” he encourages people to consider an amazingly provocative question “How do you want to be in the future?” “What future self can you envision today that you want to be in the future? Do you want to become a person that is more empathetic, more kind, more loving, more open, more curious?” Original music by Lynz Floren.

At this year's installation of the LCEEQ provincial conference we had the great pleasure of listening to Chief Innovation Evangelist, and Future of Education Strategist Dwyane Matthews. His talk was so compelling and dare I say timely, where he asked a poignant yet simple question, "Are we preparing students for 2019 or 2030? " Many recent points of inflection have been propelling this questions, be it; the pandemic, new reaches with A.I., and our quickly changing job market, climate change are forcing us to ask this question more and more. Do our students in our classes today have the capacity to adapt to a vastly unknown future? Do our students have the skills to navigate a fluidly changing landscape? In this podcast we explore these ideas, it's fascinating to say the least! Enjoy. https://www.dwaynematthews.life

I think most of us have, at some point, wished we had certain information years ago that is available today. That's certainly how I felt after I read the book my guest and I will discuss on this episode. But, according to a brilliant Chinese proverb says, the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago; the second best time is now. I find comfort in that idea, and I, for one, am very excited to plant trees from the seeds that came from my guest's brilliant work. Jeremy Utley (https://www.ideaflow.design/) is Director of Executive Education at Stanford d.school and an Adjunct Professor at Stanford's School of Engineering. He is also the host of the d.school's widely popular program, "Stanford's Masters of Creativity." Indeed, creativity and ideas make a huge difference, and just how big a difference is reflected the title of the book he co-wrote with his Stanford colleague, Perry Klebahn. The title is Ideaflow: The Only Business Metric That Matters. I loved this book so much that I'm committing to listening to it three times so I can better implement the practices. And I'm not alone in my love. It has an average of 4.9 stars on Amazon and people like Dr. Frederik G. Pferdt, Google's Chief Innovation Evangelist and many other thought leaders have publicly praised the book. So, if the most innovative companies tend to have the best bottom lines financially, and the technology of idea creation described in this book can have positive impacts on virtually EVERY area of your life, I'm guessing you'll want to listen in!
