Max Reflects on His First Semester at College What really happens after you drop your kid off at college and drive away? In this special Whinypaluza episode, Rebecca Greene sits down with her son Max to talk honestly about his first semester of college. From academic pressure and adjusting to dorm life to finding motivation, building confidence, and learning how to truly learn, Max shares what surprised him most and what helped him succeed. This is a thoughtful, grounded conversation about growth, independence, and what support from home really looks like during that first big transition.Key Takeaways→ College success is less about memorizing and more about learning how to learn.→ The first semester adjustment takes time and that is completely normal.→ Professors matter more than students expect and shape the entire experience.→ Staying motivated comes from remembering why you are there in the first place.→ Support from home works best when it includes listening, flexibility, and trust. Why This Conversation MattersThis episode offers reassurance for parents navigating the emotional shift of letting go and insight for students who may feel overwhelmed or unsure during their first semester. Max's reflections remind listeners that growth happens through patience, persistence, and self belief.CTAIf you are a parent of a college student or a student preparing for that transition, this episode will resonate. Brenda J and Karen B welcome Gini Larsen back to the show for an honest and compassionate conversation around one of the most difficult topics for abuse and trauma survivors—forgiveness. Gini holds a meaningful place in both Brenda and Karen's lives, arranging the Mending the Soul group where Brenda and Karen first met. Gini Larsen is a certified Christian counselor with over 25 years of counseling experience. She holds a master's degree from Arizona State University's College of Social Work and has extensive trauma-focused training, integrating professional clinical insight with Christian therapy and pastoral counseling. Brenda and Karen vulnerably share how hard forgiveness can be for survivors, especially when abusers remain unrepentant and emotions like anger and grief feel overwhelming. Gini offers a healthy, Christ-centered approach to forgiveness—one that does not minimize harm, but points to God for healing. She explains how forgiveness is ultimately about glorifying God and allowing Him to restore and heal the survivor's heart. This is a heartfelt and hope-filled conversation you won't want to miss. www.biblicalhopecounseling.org https://hangingontohope.org

Berry Bryant was just eighteen years old and had only been in college for five weeks when she vanished. A talented musician and scholarship freshman, she was known for checking in with her family and staying focused on her goals. On the night of October 4, 1996, Berry attended a campus dance, stopped briefly at a dorm party, and then disappeared.By morning, her car was still parked where she left it. Her bed had not been slept in. Friends woke up with a sense that something was terribly wrong.Investigators quickly focused on nineteen-year-old Levi Collen, a hometown athlete whose past revealed a disturbing pattern. As police dug deeper, they uncovered prior assaults, violent threats, and escalating behavior that had never been fully addressed. The warning signs had been there long before Berry crossed his path.Levi Collen eventually pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three consecutive life terms with no chance of parole. Berry's family buried her in a dress she had made herself, the same one she once wore to a high school dance. This case leaves one haunting question behind. How many red flags can be ignored before tragedy becomes inevitable?

A thousand facets sits with contemporary artist Karl Fritsch. Karl, creates playful and unconventional contemporary jewelry. He crosses the line with his mix materials to make us ask, what is truly precious.  On the premiere of season 4, I sit with Karl and we talk about his beginnings, how he came into the world of jewelry and how even a comment from his kids will inspire his work.  About: Karl Fritsch has gained international recognition for his ever developing body of work, which has focussed almost solely on rings. Fritsch's jewellery is unmistakable. His works vary from hand-moulded one-off castings, to re-cast, contrastingly daintier jewel-embedded rings, to towering stacks of cut and colourful glass. His ability to continually create new rings is vast and varied. Combining traditional techniques, playing on jewellery history, he has developed has own personal language. He is capable of applying both careful and quick consideration to the materials and objects he works with, and employs precious and base metals, facetted and found stones in his work with egalitarian abandon, turning the most ordinary into the extraordinary. “Of course the ring wants to be beautiful. The technique also wants to be beautiful, and most often it's the idea that wants to be the most beautiful. But sometimes a ring likes nothing better than to sit in the mud and not give a damn about how it looks. If it's exactly what it wants to be in a given moment, it is precise, perfect and the most beautiful”. Karl Fritsch Born in Germany in 1962, Karl Fritsch was classically trained at the Goldsmith's College in Pforzheim, and then attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. He has exhibited extensively, presented guest lectures around the world and his work is held in private and public collections internationally, including the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, The Pinakothek of Modern Art in Munich, the Metropolitan Museum in New York and the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. He has been the recipient of a number of awards including the Herbert Hoffman Prize from the International Craftsmen Trade Fair in Munich and the prestigious jury-selected Francoise van den Bosch Award (2006), given every 2 years to an international jewellery and object maker who is recognised for his/ her oeuvre, influence and contribution to the field. The Dolphins dominate much of the discussion as news breaks that John Harbaugh is out in Baltimore, igniting debate over Miami's coaching future and whether pursuing Harbaugh would be a bad look with Mike McDaniel still in place. Panthers coverage continues with in-depth injury analysis, Tkachuk's potential return, and roster snubs, plus insight from TV voice Steve Goldstein. College football enters the mix with former Cane Brian Monroe previewing the Canes' Fiesta Bowl semifinal matchup against Ole Miss. The show wraps with an all-time Tobin rant over Dolphins exit interviews, a full-throated call to move on from McDaniel, and a lighthearted finish as Brittney shocks Tobin by admitting she likes his so-called mortal enemy, JJ Redick.

Bill Bolthouse: More Than VegetablesBill Bolthouse's story began in the rich black soil of Grant, Michigan, where long rows of onions shaped both his childhood and his character. Working alongside his family on their muck farm, Bill learned early what honest labor demanded — often on his knees, pulling weeds under the summer sun. Each season, his dad entrusted him with three-quarters of an acre to manage himself. The deal was simple: He could keep whatever profit he earned.Bill tried to take shortcuts, tidying the edges while letting weeds take over the middle. His dad quickly saw through it, and the lesson stuck: Real work means doing the whole job and doing it well. That conviction carried Bill far beyond those onion rows. Though he once imagined a future in missions, he eventually realized God was leading him back to the family business — Bolthouse Farms. There, he helped transform a modest vegetable farm into the nation's top carrot producer. Under his leadership, Bolthouse Farms didn't just grow carrots; it reshaped how they were packaged, marketed, and delivered to families across America. But for Bill, farming was never just about crops. It was about people and purpose. He saw his work as a mission field — a way to live out his faith every day. Whether managing fields, leading sales, or guiding the business as president, Bill sought to honor Christ in every decision. “You treat people right,” he said. “Run your business like you answer to the Lord — because you do.”From 1996 to 2013, Bill served on Cedarville University's Board of Trustees, believing deeply in the school's mission to train young people for Kingdom impact. His name now graces the Bolthouse Center for Music and the upcoming Bolthouse Academic Center, though he's quick to shrug off the recognition. “I'm not interested in buildings,” he shared. “I want to see kids on fire for Jesus — going out into the world and making a difference.”Bill recently shared his story on the Cedarville Stories podcast, reflecting on a life on mission — not in a pulpit but in the dirt, at the sales desk, and in the boardroom. His passion is simple: “Before Jesus comes, I want to see as many people in heaven as possible.”And that's the legacy he's still cultivating.https://share.transistor.fm/s/c4baac23https://youtu.be/XLeSKDlGO04

As teens near the end of high school, many families feel the sudden pressure of answering the question, what's next?  In this episode, Hannah and I dive into how the modern college system developed, why it often no longer fits the realities of work and opportunity, and what can be lost when college becomes the default without a clear end goal. Hannah lays out her practical framework for helping teens think through future work based on real-life needs—not just passion—and why slowing the process down matters more than ever. If you're looking for insight into guiding your teen through this important transition in life, don't miss this episode! In this episode, we cover: - Navigating the sudden pressure of everyone asking “what's next?” when teens near the end of high school - How the modern college system developed and why today's default path no longer matches the realities of work, debt, or opportunity - The surprising data behind how few jobs actually require a college degree and why degree inflation persists anyway - What gets lost when young adults are pushed into college without clarity– time, confidence, flexibility, and momentum - Reframing career conversations away from passion-first thinking and toward identifying real-life needs and long-term goals - A practical framework for helping teens evaluate their desired future work based on income, schedule, location, and work environment - Why exposure and exploration matter more than credentials, and how simply shadowing careers of interest can prevent costly missteps - How student loan debt quietly limits future options like family life, entrepreneurship, and location flexibility - Why parents play a critical role in slowing the process down, asking better questions, and refusing to co-sign unclear decisions - Encouragement for families who feel unsure how to guide teens without a clear roadmap and why building an individualized plan together is worth the effort View full show notes on the blog + watch this episode on YouTube.
