North of Settle in the Yorkshire Dales lies the Hoffman Kiln, a relic of the industrial revolution. It's now an important site for bats of the Dales all year round. In this episode we chat to Dave Anderson and Dave Fisher who on Friday afternoons, in a term they've coined as Fieldwork Fridays, they spend 90 minutes surveying the kiln for bats. And they've racked up an impressive collection of data in studying bat behaviour such as crevice fidelity. Stuhini Exploration CEO Meredith Eades joined Steve Darling from Proactive to announce a significant new development at the company's 100%-owned Ruby Creek Project near Atlin, British Columbia. Fieldwork from the 2025 exploration season has led to the identification of a potential new copper-gold porphyry system, marking a major addition to the project's expanding portfolio of high-impact targets. Eades reported that geological teams uncovered a 400-metre-wide, discontinuous exposure of feldspar-phyric porphyry in the Ruffner area, which returned a series of high-grade copper and gold values. Eleven grab samples collected from outcrop and talus returned assays exceeding 0.5% copper, with grades reaching as high as 8.1% Cu. Gold assays were equally compelling, including 13.0 g/t Au from outcrop and 36.8 g/t Au from talus float material. The newly identified target lies approximately 3.6 kilometres from the company's flagship Ruby Creek molybdenum deposit, further demonstrating the district-scale potential of the 29,734-hectare land package. Eades noted that the discovery underscores the strength of Stuhini's emerging multi-metal exploration pipeline, which includes copper, gold, silver, and molybdenum prospects across the property. To build on this momentum, Stuhini has engaged Tetra Tech to complete a conceptual-level economic study of the Ruby Creek molybdenum deposit, which hosts 433 million pounds of molybdenum. This assessment leverages approximately 74,000 metres of historical drilling and a past 2006 feasibility study, with the goal of determining whether an updated Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) is warranted. Episode #435: “There is a person behind every piece of policy,” says Nandar, a senior digital security expert at DigiSec Lab, reflecting on Myanmar's transformation into a digital prison since the 2021 military coup. Along with researcher and trainer Vox, journalist and consultant Myat, and political researcher Candle, they discuss how the junta's technological control has reshaped daily life, eroded freedom, and forced citizens to adapt in order to survive. Nandar, who leads digital safety training and emergency response, describes Myanmar's “digital siege” as an Internet that works but no longer grants freedom. Layers of control filter access, monitor behavior, and instill fear. Through deep packet inspection, metadata tracking, and the 2025 Cybersecurity Law, the state monitors every interaction and compels service providers to surrender data. The result, she explains, is not disconnection but silence—an online world where communication feels dangerous and self-censorship has become instinct. Journalists, activists, and youth face the worst effects, yet resistance endures in small, encrypted acts of persistence. Vox, a digital safety researcher, recalls how after the coup, blackouts became “Internet curfews,” and police raids and digital fear merged into everyday life. With no protection from global companies, he and others learned that tools like Signal or Telegram could not guarantee safety. Every conversation required verification; every contact might be compromised. Digital survival meant learning espionage tactics in civilian life. Years later, he says, surveillance has become total. What began as emergency control has evolved into permanent monitoring, leaving an entire generation living cautiously under a digital authoritarian state. Myat, a journalist and media consultant, says that while before the coup, Myanmar's independent press was expanding, after the coup, licenses were revoked, reporters jailed, and websites blocked. Exiled media outlets now depend on fragile networks inside the country. Online activity itself has become perilous: VPN use invites arrest, encryption offers no safety when authorities demand passwords, and surveillance reaches into every newsroom. Myat works to train journalists in digital hygiene and security awareness, yet she warns that technology alone cannot protect them. Financial collapse and fear have made survival uncertain, and she insists that the culture of safety—and courage—must now define journalism in Myanmar. Candle, a political researcher leading DigiSec's “Duty of Care” project, focuses on how scholars must adapt research ethics to extreme risk. Fieldwork, interviews, and data collection can expose both researchers and participants to danger, so her team developed a Risk Assessment and Mitigation Plan for every project. Integrating encryption, anonymization, and storage security has become an ethical duty, not a technical choice. She explains that fear now shapes participation—many citizens decline interviews or refuse to share information. By embedding safety into research design, Candle argues, social inquiry itself becomes an act of protection as much as discovery. Together, their voices reveal a single truth: in Myanmar, speaking, writing, and researching have become acts of resistance sustained by vigilance and quiet resilience.

Fieldwork Brewing Company co-founder Barry Braden joins Herlinda Heras and Daedalus Howell on Brew Ha Ha today. Barry Braden and Erin Callahan are here from Fieldwork Brewing Co. They are expanding into Santa Rosa and Erin will manage their restaurant in Montgomery Village. They will open soon, after one last regulatory step. There is a buzz in the neighborhood and people passing by are noticing that it looks like a restaurant already. They will have an extensive beer selection and a full menu including pizza, salad, wings, French fries, fried cauliflower and pickles and lots more. Barry tells about how they serve a rotation of beers, so that fans of different types of beer can keep coming back for their favorites. He also says this is one way to make the brewers' jobs interesting. They are using a lot of new technologies with their hops, including hop distillates, extracts and experimental hops. Earthwise Minerals CEO Mark Luchinski joined Steve Darling from Proactive to announce that the company has received encouraging assay results from its 2025 field program at the Iron Range Project in British Columbia, with samples returning grades up to 13.4 g/t gold, 27.2 g/t silver, >10,000 ppm arsenic, and 2.7% lead. Earthwise holds an exclusive option to earn up to an 80% interest in the Iron Range Project from Eagle Plains Resources Ltd., which owns the property 100%. Management from both companies consider the project to have strong potential for multiple mineralization styles, including structurally controlled gold-silver, iron-oxide copper-gold (IOCG), and Sullivan-style lead-zinc-silver SEDEX mineralization. A portion of the property remains subject to a 1.0% NSR held by a third party. Luchinski explained that the 2025 field program focused on detailed follow-up of historic soil and till geochemical anomalies, geological mapping, and prospecting along structural splays of the Iron Range Fault—a major regional structure associated with past discoveries. Work targeted the Pyromorphite, Star West, DIP, and Golden Cap zones. In total, geological crews from Terralogic Exploration Inc. collected 531 soil samples, 15 rock samples, and 5 heavy mineral concentrates. The high-grade assays and strong pathfinder elements support the company's belief that multiple mineralized structures remain underexplored across the district-scale property. This show has been flagged as Clean by the host. Today we talk with Margreet Pakkert, who was kind enough to record an interview during the Flevoland 2025 Field Work Archaeology Open Day . The students were supervised as they document a Dutch Waterschip . This is a type of fishing vessel that was common in the Zuiderzee before it was reclaimed to form the province of Flevoland . As fish were caught they were kept alive in two chambers in the boat that were open to the sea¸ allowing the fishermen to deliver the freshest of fish to their market . As the water table in Flevoland is lowering, the shipwreck will soon rot away. So the team are out teaching students the craft of documenting the find and preserving what is unique. The legs of two people can be seen standing on the grass above two archaeologists who are in the wreck. From the grass level, there is a 30cm/1 Foot layer of sandy soil until there wreck begins. The body of the ship is exposed and we can see the interlocking planks that form the hull. There is a "stepping stone" path made from sand bags from the keel/center spine of the ship, to the surface. One archaeologist stands at the end of this path with a bucket and at his feet is a scoop that he is using to fill it. The lower part of the ship is filling with water that is seeping in from the surrounding ground. Another archaeologist stands in the Bow/Front of the ship with a drawing board where she is making a record of the find. The view down the tent from front to back. The ship lies about 15 Degrees to port (left in direction of travel) A photographer is taking pictures. The bun/fish compartment In the body of the ship we see three wooden partitions, that form the two chambers that were used to keep the fish alive. Although not visible to the untrained eye, there are holes to the outside sea. The Mast hole in the keel A close up of the 2M/6Foot wooden sleeper that lies on a forklift pallet. It is about 15CM/6Inches thick. This has a about 30cm/1 Foot square hole in it, that is only about 5CM/2Inch deep. This was used to hold the bottom of the mast. The Timbers Views of the overlapping timbers with cut marks, and pins holding them together. The Back/Aft A view from the back from the back of the ship. We can see that there is a rip in the hull behind the last fish compartment and the back of the ship. Was this a collision or did it occur after sinking ? An archaeologist is fighting a loosing battle to scoop out water. The glamour of the dig. There is a makeshift pool of water used to store water pumped from the wreck. The front of the site tent showing the woodland in the background, some storage shipping containers, some steel plates used to spread the load of heavy machinery. A 2M/6Foot wooden sleeper lies on a forklift pallet. A earthen mound is in front of the woods. In front of that is a very wet and damp looking tarpaulin with parts of the ship. They are normally kept wet covered with another tarpaulin so they will not rot. Each has a label on it. Some are held vertical by sandbags. There is a view of the pile of rotten wood, the eacavated soiland the pump pool. There are some rusted iron as braces in the wood. There is a rust shaped axe. Information Displays A informational poster showing how they determined the date to be Dendroarchaeology. If two trees grew during the same period, the thickness of their rings during that period will be the same. Archaeologist were able to make a complete historical map of tree rings going back to prehistory. They did this by comparing the overlapping tree rings from in existing buildings, shipwrecks and artwork. In some cases there were receipts from wood choppers for the timbers. Further back can be used by comparing overlapping rings in different artifacts. A drawing of the ship cross-sections through the center, a top, front and back view. Then a drawing of the ship with triangle sail at the front, and a square sale at the back with rigging. The cross section shows where the bun/fish compartment was located in the middle behind the mast at the bottom of the ship. A informational poster tells us the shipwreck was discovered in 1972 when the land was drained. The ship is 16 meter long and 5.5 meter wide, which is a small version as they often got to 20 meter in length. The ship was complete to the top of the bun/fish compartment. It sank somewhere between 1520 and 1530. It continues to give a timeline of the discovery. The next poster shows the 3d scans from 2022 to 2025. 2022 Shows the front half of the ship with a rats nest of broken timbers. 2023 The entire top deck is exposed 2024 and 2025 show the wood is now cleared down to the frame of the ship. There are also 3D printed versions of the scans in cases. The 3d scanner used to record some of the models. A map showing the shipping routes through the Zuiderzee. Items that visitors are encouraged to touch are fresh moss used to seal the lats, a piece of timber, some iron nails, and braces to keep the planks together. Items that visitors are not allowed to touch include, barrel taps, rings, actual moss, fish bones, and a box of other finds. Active foragers, such as skinks and certain frogs, consume more pests and cover larger territories, while ambush predators like garden lizards and paddy frogs rely on prey mobility. Understanding these predation strategies can help tailor pest control efforts based on the life stages of agricultural pests.Dr. Ghosh also discusses the effects of agricultural intensification on amphibian and reptile populations. Fieldwork in Balasore, Odisha revealed that high-intensity farming reduced amphibian abundance by half compared to low-intensity areas. More importantly, her research uncovered that when amphibian densities fall below a certain threshold, these animals may stop providing ecosystem services and instead begin preying on beneficial insect predators, resulting in ecosystem disservices.This episode highlights the importance of maintaining healthy amphibian and reptile populations for effective pest management. Conservation strategies must ensure that these animals are supported through landscape-level planning, such as planting hedgerows, maintaining vegetation corridors, and conserving natural habitat patches. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship - one of only two students in Maine and 130 nationwide to receive this honor. Over the years, our collective philosophy and approach to coffee has taken many forms as we learn more about what the industry needs to thrive. We as individuals evolve our thoughts and views of coffee often starting with hubris and a strict puritanical view, then opening up to a wider, simpler, generous, and maybe even humble stance on the various ways coffee can be enjoyed and communicated.  Today we are talking about one such journey with the Founder of Fieldwork Coffee and Director of the World Aeropress Championships, Tim Williams! Tim Williams is the director of the World AeroPress Championship, and founder of Melbourne's Fieldwork Coffee. Since the early 2000's, Tim's worked across a range of roles, including Workshop Coffee and Square Mile Coffee Roasters in London, and Intelligentsia Coffee & Tea in Los Angeles. On the sidelines, Tim's collaborated on a number of coffee initiatives including helping to develop Maison Kitsuné's 'Cafe Kitsuné, launching the Gitesi Project, and as a founding member of Coffee Common. Today, Tim lives in Melbourne and divides his time between Fieldwork Coffee, the World AeroPress Championship, running a small charity in rural Rwanda, and raising three kids with his partner, Leah. Dr. Bruce Beehler is an ornithologist and Research Associate in the Bird Division of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History. Bruce's research is focused on the birds of the boreal conifer forests of the U.S. and Canada. He is interested in understanding how the permanent resident birds survive in these forests year round. Bruce spends much of his free time outside and immersed in nature. He enjoys playing tennis, going for hikes, and kayaking, as well as watching wildlife at the feeders outside his home. He completed his undergraduate studies in American Civilization at Williams College and received his Masters and PhD degrees in Biology from Princeton University where he studied behavioral ecology of the birds of paradise. Afterwards, Bruce worked for ten years at the Smithsonian's Natural Museum of Natural history. Before returning to the Museum in 2014, Bruce worked for Conservation International, the Wildlife Conservation Society, the U.S. Department of State, Counterpart International, and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. Bruce is a Fellow of the American Ornithologists Union, and he is the author of eleven books including a field guide and a taxonomic checklist of Birds of New Guinea and the recently released book North on the Wing. In our interview, Bruce shared some of his fantastic stories about life and science.
