In this annual St. Patrick's Day special, host Jordan Kunde-Wright of the Twin Cities Kettlebell Club once again reunites with David Keohan—affectionately known as “Indian Stones.” This yearly tradition marks a time to toast the holiday together while catching up on David's newest achievements. From launching his craft beer, Mullán, to filming a funded one-hour documentary for RTÉ, David continues to champion Ireland's rich heritage of stone lifting.Listeners will hear how David's passion for preserving Celtic culture has led him to discover more than 48 historic stones throughout the Irish countryside—some weighing upwards of 200 kilos. He shares humorous anecdotes about powerlifters struggling with the awkward heft of these behemoths, proving that raw barbell strength doesn't always translate to practical lifting. Meanwhile, Jordan swaps stories about hauling logs in his backyard, underscoring the primal satisfaction of moving “real world” weight.Amid all the laughter and celebration, David reveals his forthcoming trip to Boston, where he'll inaugurate a brand-new lifting stone at a cultural center and offer stone lifting workshops. He also discusses The Wind Under It, his upcoming book set to be published worldwide by Bloomsbury, and hints at a possible PhD focusing on these ancient stones. Whether you love strongman feats, enjoy a good pint, or simply want to revel in genuine Irish spirit, this annual conversation offers a fascinating glimpse into the ever-expanding world of Celtic stone lifting. This episode features an interview with Christian Mitchell, EVP & Chief Customer Officer at Northwestern Mutual. Christian works to elevate the customer experience and deliver bold solutions to set Northwestern Mutual ahead of its competitors. And over his 18-year tenure at Northwestern mutual, he has served in a variety of leadership roles, including as president of their Wealth Management Company when he managed $129 billion in client assets. Host Sohaib Ahmed discusses with Mitchell his journey and various roles at Northwestern Mutual over 18 years, alongside his insights into building memorable customer experiences. They delve into how Northwestern Mutual integrates technology to enhance customer experiences while maintaining a human-centric approach. Mitchell shares his perspective on the evolving customer expectations, the future of customer experience (CX), including the potential impact of generative AI, and the significance of consistency in delivering great CX. Additionally, the importance of data privacy, the challenges of implementing new technologies, and the role of storytelling in reshaping company culture towards more client-centric values are covered.Quotes*”The financial services marketplace is complex. I really think you need to understand that holistic landscape in order to take all of that and fashion it into an incredible client experience. If you don't have that holistic understanding of the system and how we create value and what clients need, it's easy to default to designing experiences indexed on efficiency, or maybe client experiences that index on regulatory adherence, but not actually creating something that's really incredible and delightful for the client.”*”On metrics, it's really evolved. When we started the CX journey, it was really focused on CSAT, NPS, those really big aggregate numbers that are easy to compare across companies. As time has gone on, I've become less and less enamored with those aggregate metrics. We still need to calculate them, we need to track, we need to benchmark, etc. But I think CX telemetry is best done at a more granular basis where you're actually measuring things like individual interactions and satisfaction.”*”I think at times you can find a metric and seek to maximize it, and then kind of lose the storyline a little bit. So I think you always have to kind of come back to this foundation of what are we trying to do strategically? What are we really solving for holistically?”*”In terms of the media stuff that we do, the planning and progress study, a lot of the talks that I give internally, to our advisors, to client groups, it's about this constant drumbeat of storytelling around the client. And I think that constant drumbeat of storytelling is incredibly important for long standing incumbent financial services companies because historically we were very focused on financial performance. We might have been very focused on recruiting of advisors, and those things are very important. But by constantly storytelling around the client, incredible experiences, things that we want to do, it's part of shifting the zeitgeist, the mindset of the organization to be more client centric.”*”One of the interesting areas where we debate a lot is instances where the client may have a preference for self service, but we somehow want to inject a human to make sure that the best client outcome occurs. The poster child example would be, we have a big market correction, the client gets scared, wants to liquidate his or her portfolio, and might prefer to do that in an automated way via the mobile experience. Now, if the client really wants to do that, of course we will help them do it. But that might not actually be the best long-term decision. So in instances like that, we actually want to insert some human friction, for lack of a better word, to at least gut check that client, to really make sure that we're helping that client not only have a good experience today, but really achieve their financial goals long term.”*”A lot of the experiences that we create in financial services or financial planning, it's more at pulling the heartstrings than the math. It's about the emotion, the psychology. How do you harness that in such a way that the client makes the right decisions and is better off long term?”*”Sometimes we think about the peak moments of the client experience. That ‘You can retire moment,' or ‘Your family's protected' moment. But I actually think real trust, real client experience comes through consistency of interaction, predictability, and high quality communication that plays out over really, really long periods of time. So I think consistency is really the name of the game and one of the unsung heroes of great client experiences.”Time Stamps[2:38] Christian Mitchell's Journey in Northwestern Mutual[5:16] The Evolution of Customer Expectations at Northwestern Mutual[7:14] Leveraging Technology to Enhance Customer Experience[16:15] The Future of Customer Experience: Innovations and Challenges[21:10] Building Lifelong Customer Relationships and Looking Ahead[30:03] The Importance of Consistency in CXAbout our guest, Christian MitchellChristian W. This podcast episode will delve into the life of David Mordechai Packouz, a former American arms dealer, musician, and inventor born on February 17, 1982. Packouz joined forces with Efraim Diveroli in September 2005 at AEY Inc., an arms company that quickly secured numerous contracts worth millions. Their notable achievement was a nearly $300 million contract in 2007 to supply the Afghan Army with vast quantities of ammunition, which controversially included prohibited Chinese ammunition, leading to significant legal and ethical issues. Packouz played a key role in concealing the origin of these munitions, resulting in a sentence of seven months of house arrest for conspiracy to defraud the United States. His story caught public attention and was later depicted in the 2016 film War Dogs, where Packouz made a cameo appearance. Beyond his controversial past, Packouz has reinvented himself as an inventor and CEO of Singular Sound, where he developed the BeatBuddy, a guitar pedal drum machine, showcasing his transition from arms dealing to music technology. We're bringing it back, emphasizing the significance of a supportive community, and why it's crucial to show our real, imperfect selves. As we stress on accepting failures and learning from them, we also tap into the power of vulnerability as a catalyst for growth and connection. Now, let's talk about intuition, mutual support, and unique success paths in the hair industry. We're all different, each with our own circumstances and trajectories. And as we navigate these paths, we want to remind you that someone else's success doesn't mean you've failed. It's in the spirit of community and growth that we plan to host a live event next year, to meet you in person, learn together, and strengthen our bond. Exciting, isn't it? If you're familiar with the Silicon Valley world or venture capital space, Steve Jurvetson is a name that needs no introduction. For the rest of you, Steve's a legendary venture capitalist perhaps best known for his early backing of companies like Hotmail, Skype, Paypal, Tesla, SpaceX, and more. He sat on Tesla's board of directors for years, and currently sits on SpaceX's board, too. These big bets he's taken on then-risky and out-there companies have led Steve to astronomical financial success (pun intended), but also to become an influential thought leader on space and technology issues, along with others. He was also an early backer of the cultivated meat industry, investing in Upside Foods' Series A. In 2016, President Obama appointed Steve as a Presidential Ambassador for Global Entrepreneurship. Steve's also been honored as one of "Tech's Best Venture Investors" by Forbes, and as the “Venture Capitalist of the Year” by Deloitte. The dude's a pretty prolific photographer too, it turns out, as I've learned. In fact, if you enter his name into Google without hitting enter, one of the dropdowns you get served is Steve Jurvetson Flickr! Today, Steve runs a venture capital fund called Future Ventures with his business partner Maryanna Saenko, and for full disclosure, as you'll hear in this interview, Future Ventures is an investor in my own company, The Better Meat Co. But as you'll also hear in this interview, that doesn't stop us from discussing taboo topics like Steve's personal wealth, how he spends his money, and more. Other interesting topics we explore include: What led a deep tech investor like Steve to invest in alternative meat? How many startup pitches does Steve hear weekly? What makes a good pitch, and what gets him to cross the finish line to actually wire investment dollars? What company does Steve want you to start and pitch him on? What does Steve think you should look for in a cofounder? For what does Steve think his future self will condemn his current self? What would be one of the greatest discoveries ever, in Steve's view? What happened in his life when Steve stopped drinking? What does Steve suggest you try as “the funniest google exercise”? In all, it's a riveting conversation with one of the most consequential names in business, including businesses that are seeking to do good in the world. Resources referenced in this episode NASA's Planetary Protection Division and Paul's thoughts in Astronomy magazine about its implications Massive liquid water oceans in our solar system, such as on Europa and Enceladus Europa report, which Steve still needs to see Steve's thoughts on Boston Consulting Group's report on where best to invest for the climate Steve's review of Paul's book Clean Meat (which he reviewed before the two knew each other) Other books Steve's enjoyed: Steve Jobs, The Founders, and Code Breaker More about Steve Jurvetson Steve Jurvetson is an early-stage venture capitalist with a focus on founder-led, mission-driven companies at the cutting edge of disruptive technology and new industry formation. Steve led founding investments in several companies that had successful IPOs and others that were billion-dollar acquisitions, representing $800 billion of aggregate value creation. Some of those early VC investments include Planet Labs, SpaceX and Tesla. Before co-founding Future Ventures and Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Steve was an R&D Engineer at Hewlett-Packard, where seven of his chip designs were fabricated. He also worked in product marketing at Apple and NeXT and management consulting with Bain & Company. He completed his undergraduate Electrical Engineering degree at Stanford in 2.5 years, graduating #1 in his class, and went on to earn a MSEE and MBA from Stanford. In 2017, Steve received the Visionary Award from SV Forum. In 2016, President Barack Obama appointed Steve as a Presidential Ambassador for Global Entrepreneurship. Steve has also been honored as one of "Tech's Best Venture Investors" by Forbes, and as the “Venture Capitalist of the Year” by Deloitte.

Messaging wars — Google's RCS versus Apple's iMessage A recent Wall Street Journal feature on how teens in the US are using Apple's iMessage as a status symbol spotlighted another front on which the iPhone maker is at loggerheads with Google—messaging. Hiroshi Lockheimer, senior vice president of Android, tweeted that Apple is deliberately holding back from supporting the RCS, or rich communication services, on its walled-in iMessage platform. RCS was originally developed by GSMA, the telecom operators' global industry group, but Google bought an RCS provider in 2015 and developed and popularised it as the next generation phone-number based messaging platform that would replace the SMS. Emails that became public in the Apple versus Epic Games lawsuit also showed that Apple's strategy of not supporting RCS was a deliberate one, The Verge points out. In cold weather, cats have found a comforting resting place atop the satellite dishes that Starlink consumers have on their roofs, one customer Aaron Taylor pointed out in a tweet on new years day, with a photograph of five cats huddled up on his dish. ‘Cat on a hot satellite dish,' The Guardian quipped, in its headline, inspired by the Tennessee Williams play Cat on a Hot Tin Roof that became a famous movie as well. What's happening, apparently, is that the Starlink dishes are engineered to give out a bit of heat to melt the snow that collects on them, and cats are known to take comfort wherever they find it.
