0:50 Insights into Japanese Football and Coaching JourneyHisashi reminisces about his early experiences with football in Japan, particularly enjoying lunchtime games with classmates. He cites Keisuke Honda as a childhood hero and recalls a significant match where Gamba Osaka faced Manchester United, which motivated him to become a football coach. Hisashi emphasizes the competitiveness of Japanese football and the excitement of watching teams like Leeds under Marcelo Bielsa.10:21 -The State of Football Development in JapanHisashi explained that football has become increasingly popular in Japan, competing closely with baseball. He emphasized the importance of university football as a developmental stage for young players who may not transition directly to professional leagues, with many opting for education alongside their athletic pursuits.16:08 - University Pathways and Player Development in Japanese FootballHisashi discussed the relationship between Japanese universities and J-League clubs, noting that players often prioritize education over early professional contracts. While some players may sign with clubs during their third year, many choose to complete their degrees before becoming free agents, which allows them to negotiate with various clubs. This shift has attracted interest from international clubs, leading to changes in recruitment strategies.22:01 -Cultural Perspectives on Coaching in Japan and EnglandHisashi compares the coaching methods in Japan and England, noting that Japan has modeled its football academy system after European countries. He emphasizes the cultural differences, particularly in how players are treated, with Japanese coaches fostering independence and critical thinking from a young age, allowing players to take ownership of their development.32:04 -Discussion on Honda's Iconic Persona in FootballHisashi shares insights on Honda's distinctive style and personality, which set him apart from other players like Shinji Okazaki and Shinji Kagawa. He emphasizes Honda's boldness, including his fashion choices and outspoken nature, which resonated with fans and made him an icon. Michael Wright adds that Honda's nonconformity plays a significant role in his appeal.33:45- Cultural Perspectives on Coaching and Responsibility in SportsHisashi explains that Japanese coaches often allow players to think independently rather than providing direct answers, fostering a sense of personal responsibility. He highlights that this cultural approach encourages players to work hard and conform to group expectations, even when not directly supervised. Michael Wright expresses curiosity about how this contrasts with the behavior of young players in England, who might act out if left alone.39:59 -Discussion on Player Self-Regulation in CoachingMichael asked Hisashi about the potential for players in England to self-regulate and the time it might take for this to become effective. Hisashi responded that, in his experience, this model often does not work well due to the cultural context and the way players are taught. He noted that while players in Japan take ownership of their responsibilities regardless of supervision, this mindset may not be as prevalent in England.42:36- Exploring Coaching Approaches in Japanese FootballMichael and Hisashi explore the structured training methods prevalent in Japanese football, emphasizing the role of routine and repetition in skill development. Hisashi notes that while this approach fosters technical proficiency, it may limit players' creativity and adaptability in game situations. Michael adds that the challenge lies in translating training skills into live, pressurized moments on the pitch.. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In this episode, Hall welcomes Vik Sasi of Dreamers VC. Dreamers VC, founded by Will Smith and Keisuke Honda is a venture capital fund bridging established Japanese corporate investors with early-stage, US-based companies. The company was conceived from their shared passion to improve the world. They invest in innovative companies, alongside top-tier lead investors, to improve lives through the application of emerging technology. When appropriate Dreamers VC supports expansion by connecting companies to their global network of capital and strategic partners. Generally, they make the first investment into a Seed, A, or B round, and maintain follow on capital for the growth stages of our investments. Vik was previously on the investment team at AmFam Ventures. He began his career as an Analyst for the Clinton Foundation's Health Access Initiative and as a Strategic Advisor to the Haitian Ministry of Health, with additional stints in investment banking at Morgan Stanley and venture capital at Healthbox. In this episode, Hall and Vik speak about the Dreamer fund and what they specifically look for. According to Vik, Dreamers is a purely opportunistic fund. Nearly 100% of the deal flow is inbound. It all boils down to the team, organic growth and potential for uncapped upside. Vik also touches on what he sees as challenges startups face and offers his advice. It's really simple, just stay in your lane, run your race, try not to get caught up in trying to keep up with the Joneses.

The first of the FFA Cup Semi Finals took place on Friday night, and it was Adelaide United who progressed to the Final for the third time, defeating Bentleigh Greens 2-0. Adelaide looked in control for most of the game, with Goals to Ben Halloran and Jordan Elsey propelling the Reds to their comfortable win. Head Coach Marco Kurz now findes himself in his second Cup final in as many seasons with Adelaide. Former A-League boss Archie Fraser has put his hand up to help Football Federation Australia reinvent itself in the post-Steven Lowy era. Fraser quit the governing body after just 12 months in the job back in 2011, disillusioned with the direction taken by the FFA board and with a belief that his “hands were tied behind his back”. He’s been an avid observer of the game’s administrative misfortunes ever since, and a staunch critic of the Lowy-led regime. Hibernian player, Martin Boyle, is set to "pledge his allegiance" to Australia when he is tipped to be named in Graham Arnold's Socceroos training camp squad in the UAE next month. "Red tape" means the 25-year-old Aberdeen born Boyle will be unable to play in the match against Kuwait while the paperwork to determine his eligibility to play for Australia - due to the Australian birth of his father - is dealt with. Keisuke Honda has netted his first goal in Melbourne Victory colours. The Japanese star fired home a first half penalty during Victory’s 3-1 behind-closed-doors friendly defeat to Wellington Phoenix earlier today. While Honda’s debut strike for Victory will take the headlines from the Wellington clash, the New Zealanders will undoubtedly be buoyed by a fine performance against the reigning Hyundai A-League Champions. A strong, defensive showing from Mark Rudan's men was highlighted by a hat-trick from Phoenix star Roy Krishna, who struck a first-half penalty and put away two second-half efforts to seal a confidence boosting friendly win.

It is yet to be revealed whether the 32-year-old former AC Milan playmaker will make his first appearance in the FFA Cup on Tuesday 21 August. The FIFA-backed panel tasked with fixing Australian football's governance crisis has rejected criticisms of its report from FFA chairman Steven Lowy and his board about their proposals. Melbourne Victory have sealed the signature of Japan legend Keisuke Honda on a one-year deal worth $2.9 million. However Victory’s bid to team Honda with Socceroos striker Jamie Maclaren is far less cut and dried, despite reports he is headed to AAMI Park. Maclaren remains on the books of German club Darmstadt, and despite being inundated with offers from England, Scotland, Continental Europe and the A-League, he has yet to be granted an early release from his contract. Kick in Russ – Die WM 2018 – meinsportpodcast.de
