In this episode, we will be reviewing “Delusion in Death,” which is a book that all three of us haven’t read for years, probably because it’s such a hard read. But, it’s such a good book! First, we talk about theme. Deciding on the theme for this book was difficult, because it could be so many things, but we finally setting on the theme of “Choices.” So much of what happens in this book happen because of the choices that the characters have made. You can see this theme when Eve had her nightmare where she inserted Dr. Mira into the dream, and at the end of it, “dream” Dr. Mira tells Eve: “Out of terrible times, perhaps more than ordinary ones, heroes and villains spring. Sometimes there's little difference between them but a choice, and the choice made defines them. Look at the choices.” There is a lot of growth in this book for Eve, one of the indicators of this is the dream, and how, after the dream was over, instead of feeling scared/sad/vulnerable, she felt happy and energized. And horny. This is also the book where Eve finally tells Peabody about what happened in Dallas (“New York to Dallas”). It’s a really amazing scene between Eve and Peabody, probably one of the best Eve/Peabody scenes in the entire series. There’s also a bit of growth from both Eve and Roarke when they’re forced to accept an HSO agent into the group investigating this crime, and they both not only come to terms with that, but make their peace with it and the HSO agent, Teasdale, is actually a good person and a valuable part of the team. There’s also a really great scene where Eve takes Roarke with her to interview a few of the witnesses, and Eve tells Roarke that she wants him to be “Scary Roarke Lite.” Roarke is thrilled with this role that Eve has given him and just really kills it. Again, another one of the best scenes in the series. Overall, as we said, it’s a really great book, and we hope you all enjoyed it as much as we did.

DART invests in early stage startups from Switzerland and Europe and helps them test and scale their ideas in San Francisco. Arijana holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in General Management from HSO and previously worked as VP Innovation & Technology at Swisscom. At DART Labs, she interacts with dozens of startups on a weekly basis, and during her chat with us she summarized some of the lessons she's learned so far.  Is your startup VC-backable?  That depends on how fast you're willing to go. The question in any investor's mind, when deliberating whether or not to invest, is “Can this investment provide a return for the entirety of the money this fund has invested thus far?” If you're not willing/able to grow your valuation 3x every 12 to 18 months, VC money is probably not the right choice for you. Growing at this rate is not the right option for every startup necessarily, but it is very much the type of thing VCs want. For instance, at DART Labs, Arijana and Sophie ask startups whether within 5 years they will be able to reach 50M in revenue, or be acquired for 50M. Should you go for VC money or business angels? That depends on the stage of your company. If you're at a pre-seed stage, you'll probably only be able to convince business angels. At seed stage, your investor pool might look like a mixed bag. From Series A onwards, you're much more likely to captivate VCs, and may perhaps start relying more on them than on angel money. How should you best approach a venture capitalist? Make sure you're able to reference a specific thing that has motivated you to reach out to them. You can mention something they said at a conference, which really resonated with you, or a company in which they've recently invested, that does something similar to what you're doing.  Play with their FOMO (“fear of missing out”). VCs, Arijana included, very often fall prey to that dreadfully tempting emotion. Don't let the VC you're talking to know that you've already talked to 30 other investors, if that's the case. Because if you have, and you don't have any soft commitments yet, the VC may very well assume the fault lies with your product (and ask yourself: does it?). Arijana recommends that you structure your fundraising timeline around upcoming milestones which impact your valuation. She also urges you to make sure you have enough runway. 6 months for fundraising and 7 months of runway… is a recipe for disaster. What are VCs thinking about during the first intro call? “Is this the right team for this challenge?” “Is this challenge worth tackling?” In future calls, you'll discuss things like the business model, your sales pipeline, etc. What makes a good pitch deck? It's never a bad idea to go with the typical, Silicon Valley-style, “10 slides, problem -> solution” pitch deck. If your product is deep tech or healthtech, make sure to have your scientific research ready at hand. If you have a strong sales funnel, include it in your pitch deck! Investors wanna know whom the great companies you're talking to are. When giving investors access to the data room, it's a great idea to include a Q&A/FAQ file with all the questions other VCs have previously asked.  Don't forget to give us a follow on our Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Linkedin accounts, so you can always stay up to date with our latest initiatives. H: You know, parenting styles are like ice cream flavors. Everyone has their favorite, and no one really agrees on which one is the best. But the good news is, there's no one-size-fits-all when it comes to parenting. So, let's explore a few different scoops of parenting styles and see which one tickles your taste buds.H: First up, we have "Attachment Parenting." It's like the gelato of parenting styles - sweet, warm, and oh-so-intimate. Attachment parenting is all about forming a close emotional bond with your child. You're like Batman and Robin, inseparable! But, just like gelato, it can get a bit sticky at times. Critics say attachment parenting might make your child a bit too clingy.H: On the other hand, we've got "Authoritative Parenting." This is like the classic vanilla ice cream of parenting styles - a solid choice. It's all about setting clear rules and expectations while still being warm and loving. Think of it as adding some rainbow sprinkles of discipline. But beware, too much vanilla can get a bit boring, and too many sprinkles can be overwhelming.H: "Permissive Parenting" is the triple-scoop sundae of parenting styles. It's all about saying "yes" more than "no" and letting your child explore life without many restrictions. Your kid gets the cherry on top! But, as any ice cream aficionado will tell you, too many toppings can lead to a bellyache. Critics argue that permissive parenting may lead to spoiled children.H: "Authoritarian Parenting" is like eating broccoli ice cream – not really ice cream at all! It's all about strict rules and high expectations. Your kid will definitely know the difference between right and wrong, but it might not be the most fun flavor. Too much of this, and you might be facing a rebellion worthy of a superhero origin story.H: And then there's "Helicopter Parenting." Think of it as the whipped cream and chocolate syrup on your ice cream. They're always there, hovering, ready to swoop in at any moment. Helicopter parents are like your own personal entourage. But, just like too much whipped cream, it can smother the joy out of any ice cream cone.H: Alright, let's not forget "Free-Range Parenting." It's like going to an ice cream shop with endless options. Free-range parents allow their children to explore the world with minimal hovering. They're all about independence and self-discovery, like trying all the flavors at an ice cream parlor. However, just like too many choices can lead to decision fatigue, critics worry that this style might not provide enough structure.H: So, what's the scoop? The truth is, no one style is perfect, just like no single ice cream flavor can satisfy all your cravings. The best approach is a bit like making a banana split, taking a little from each flavor to create your own unique blend that works for you and your family.H: Thanks for joining us on this flavorful journey through parenting styles. Remember, there's no one right way to parent, and what works best for you is like your own secret recipe. Until next time, keep parenting with a spoonful of love, a dash of patience, and a sprinkling of humor.

Since most of the novellas up to this point have had some sort of supernatural element, you expect that here, and it does seem like it's headed that way, but in the end, it's not at all supernatural. There's a lot of fun moments with Eve and Peabody, especially Peabody getting hit on and Eve being a sarcastic bitch about that. Which we both really enjoy. There's a bit of continuing HSO controversy in this one, but it's resolved quickly. Also, there is a bit of a controversial ending.

There is a lot to learn about Hemp Seed Oil (HSO).  The main reason why I wanted to cover it was that there is a lot of misinformation about the product. It is not hard to find hemp in food products.  It is dang easy to find claims or promises of calm or relaxation.   People that have an anxiety condition are prime suckers for dark side entrepreneurs. Ignorance helps them to take advantage and money. Or worse, place your health at risk.   If you know the core basics, you might still be anxious but you will be an informed consumer. To summarize:   The oil is legal on the federal level, provided the seeds and the resultant product contains less than 0.3% THC or psych-active properties.   Those states with legalized hemp and marijuana laws permit the sale of this product. Other states do not and it will be up to you to know the difference.   Hemp Seed Oil is good for a lot of things:   There is some nutritional value Can be used for cold food recipes like salad dressings and other foods Good for the hair, skin and nails   What it is not good for is treatment for anxiety symptoms. It does not have the properties to relax you or help you control your symptoms.   So yeah, unless you or someone you know is operating under the power of the placebo. it isn't going to do much for you.   However, in this episode, I talk about safe ways to obtain the product and pay a fair price. Resources Mentioned:  The U.S. Food Data Central Database has a branded search feature helps you to find products with hemp in them in the U.S. and NZ. It is one of the ways I found out about some of the U.S. oil vendors.   U.S. Food and Drug Administration wants you to understand what it means when you see something that states it is FDA approved. They have an FAQ page. I'm not linking to these vendors. They are for example purposes only.  I do want to show examples of vendors that can be found in brick and mortar stores, direct to vendor websites or at third party vendor websites.   Manitoba Harvest Organic Hemp Seed Oil, has a website for both U.S. and Canadian customers. The company has both hemp and CBD products and shipping to all states for the oil. They have recipes and information about the product. Nutiva also has a website, but you won't find HSO under oils but under seeds. Has a store locator which might help you find it locally and the do have shipping. Foods Alive's website also has a store locator and shipping. Hey y'all, and welcome back to the show with our episode on social media boundaries. I want to remind you that we are having a growth challenge soon, so get in my free Facebook group, Authentic Instagram Engagement and get on our email list. If you're listening in early January, this will be happening mid to late January.   I know you're going to benefit from this challenge and learn some things that we're seeing help right now to generate and grow traffic and authentic followers. Now for today's show, Hayley, my assistant, is joining me!   Click below for show notes! https://www.ruthiegray.mom/social-media-boundaries/ Click below to join our free Authentic Instagram Engagement Facebook page! https://www.facebook.com/groups/778964932495587           Setting social media boundaries in 2022 Hayley: Thanks for having me back on the show! R: Anytime girl, glad you're here. So we're going to have a conversation about setting social media boundaries. We're going to reference where we left off in the 2022 predictions podcast about using IG and the implications of needing to be on it more to get your content seen. H: Basically, we know that Instagram kind of rewards you for being on the app. They know that the more you use it, the more you'll stay on it basically. It's going to become more saturated as well.     Increased IG Traffic We're going to see even more people joining next year. In some ways, that's an exciting thing because there are a lot of people realizing that they can work from home and they can try to accomplish their business dreams. They're gonna be trying to utilize Instagram to make that happen. That's going to be part of Instagram seeing more heavy traffic is there will be people joining with the purpose of promoting their small business and for a small business owner, this is a good thing. It also maybe a little bit of a tricky thing because you may get new potential clients or you might gain new potential peers, but that means also your competition is probably going to grow too. R: I know that the listeners of this podcast and our followers are very concerned with life balance in regards to social media boundaries and being in the present for their people and making the most of our one precious life that we have. So we want to figure out how to do this well.    Let's talk first about a couple more things here that you're seeing happen, Hayley.          Maximum user fluctuation means increased need for social media boundaries. H: So, we may see a lot of people joining as it's kind of the usual for Instagram, but we are probably going to see more people leave as well. This is honestly because Instagram is going to be kind of a little bit more competitive with the traffic saturation and a little bit more busy. I think with video taking over on most social media platforms, not just Instagram, but most of them, it does make it a little bit trickier to intentionally, disengage from the app whenever you want to. So, I think some people are going to feel tired of that and maybe a little bit drained by social media and they might just leave. Because setting social media boundaries intentionally is difficult! R: I always tell my followers to be sure to just work on one, building one solid platform before you jump to another. That's why I say spend time on the app, but there's another side of that. That is, you can't put all of your eggs in one basket. So, you do need to make sure that you are elsewhere besides Instagram.   The importance of a newsletter Especially your newsletter. For me, Instagram and my newsletter are my top two priorities. The newsletter actually has even more of a priority for me. It is the top one. Because if you can get people on your newsletter you can reach them any time and you can't necessarily do that on IG. Not everyone's going to see your posts on Instagram. So there's that,

The book opens with Reva Ewing angrily driving to her best friends house. Reva's best friend, Felicity Kade, has been having an affair with Reva's huband, Blair Bissel. Reva breaks into the house with the thought that she would catch them in the act and maybe give Blair a stun to the balls. What Reva finds, though, is Blair and Felicity have been stabbed to death. Next thing she knows, she smells a chemical and passes out. When Reva wakes up, she calls the one person she can trust the most: her mother, Caro. Caro then calls the one person SHE trusts the most, and that is Roarke. Roarke then grabs the one person HE trusts the most and that's Eve. "Divided in Death" is ultimately a book about trust. Reva trusted both Kade and Bissel, and that trust was violated in more ways than one. She then puts her trust in her mother, then Roarke, then Eve. But it's also about the trust that Eve has in Roarke, a perceived violation of trust between Eve and Mira, and the trust that Eve has in Feeney and Peabody. This book has pretty much everything you could ever want in an "In Death" book: Great mystery, heart wrenching relationship issues, great scenes of Peabody and McNab in Jamaica, great scene with Mavis and then an Eve makeover that leads to one of the best sex scenes in the series...Eve confesses her crush on Dennis Mira, and Nora correcting a previous mistake in the best way. Just overall a great book! It also has men who are the worst. And we can't believe we have to say this AGAIN, but DON'T STEAL OTHER PEOPLE'S SEX TOYS, ROARKE!!! THAT'S JUST GROSS!!

Capes On the Couch - Where Comics Get Counseling

Intro Background (1:43) Homelander created by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson in The Boys #3 (Nov. 2006) Introduced as the leader and most powerful member of the Seven, a group of corporate-sponsored superheroes Initially comes off as affable, only to reveal he's actually a misogynistic jerk - and it gets worse from there Public backstory is that he was an alien who landed on Earth, but in reality his mother was a mentally disabled woman who died in childbirth, and he was the byproduct of genetic experiments from Stormfront, a Nazi superhero - he spent his childhood strapped to a hydrogen bomb in case he tried to escape Homelander hates being a hero, but only does so because Vought pays him handsomely Later revealed that Billy Butcher, head of a group of humans who hate the Seven, has special dislike for Homelander because Homelander raped his wife, who died giving birth to a superpowered baby, which Billy then killed immediately #BecauseComics Homelander is revealed to have no memory of this or many other horrific acts which he is blamed for - this causes him to have a psychotic break and begin doing whatever he wants He has no memory because the horrible acts were actually committed by Black Noir, a clone of Homelander that Vought created to keep Homelander in check - since Black Noir's sole purpose was to kill Homelander, he gaslit Homelander to drive him insane in order to justify killing him - Homelander and Black Noir fight, and Black Noir kills Homelander, but is injured enough that Billy could finish him off with a crowbar Issues (8:46) Matt: Wow. The layers upon layers to this guy. He really is just the embodiment of the nature versus nurture argument writ large, isn't he? Injected with an artificial compound to give him superpowers in the womb, mother died giving birth to him, spent his entire childhood chained to a hydrogen bomb so he wouldn't escape from Vought. Raised with no other purpose in life but to become a living corporate-sanctioned product whose image and likeness would be sold for profit while he awed and wowed a company's customers. Given every single ounce of hedonistic excess he could ever want by his company to keep him happy and cooperative and, basically, to stop him from using his powers to destroy the world and/or enslave the human race. This naturally instilled in him some deep-seated psychological issues: 1. Entitlement. I mean...holy crap. The man's mantra is, "I can do whatever the fuck I want." Coercing women into sex? Not a problem. Gleefully using his powers against civilians? Assholes shouldn't have been standing there. It's positively bone-chilling the way he doesn't even give his actions a second thought, or much of a first one. 2. Complete lack of empathy. The man does not even consider non-Supes to be people. Absolutely does not care about the damage any of his actions cause. Also can't even be bothered to try to help people in need unless it's his bosses telling him to. On 9/11, doesn't even want to try and save the plane until someone points out they'll probably get fired if they don't. (13:54) 3. Unapologetically racist and sexist. Has a hierarchy, even among his fellow supes. Women are beneath men. Nonwhites are beneath whites. Basically anyone who's not him or just like him is beneath him. Referencing The Deep, as Bill Burr would say, he drops the hard "r", hits the dismount, and sticks the landing. Multiple times. Views Maeve and Starlight as sex objects first, superheroes second. But, and this is a but, it's implied that he at least tried to adhere to the idealism of a hero early on in his career, even if he was a bit of a prick about it. And it was nonstop long-term gaslighting campaign of Black Noir -- tricking him into believing he suffered from blackouts where he committed horrific acts of rape and mass murder and had no memory of it -- that caused him to go full-blown monster. That he thought to himself, in for a penny, in for a pound. After he's descended into what we see in the comics, we learn that the major issue that he's struggled with his whole life is that, as Stillwell points out in their big confrontation, with all his power, he is really nothing special at his core. There is literally not one person chosen at random who couldn't do everything he'd done in his life if they were given his powers. Oh boy, does that eat at him. He's nobody, just a guy who won the superpower lottery and decided to treat it like most people do when they win the actual lottery. Man, that's a lot of meat to chew on right there. Real-life analogue? Ummm...Dance Moms, anyone? Child actors? Child beauty pageant contestants? Kids who are steered into an activity before they have any inkling of whether or not they actually want to do it and pushed on relentlessly by obsessive parents who want their kids to be the best to satisfy their own egos, robbing them of a childhood and making them sincerely believe that they are better than anyone else? You don't have to go too far to imagine all the real-life Homelanders out there. Gaslighting by Black Noir (28:00) Break (34:41) Plugs for BetterHelp, Cheers to Comics, and Erica Schultz Treatment (36:33) In-universe - Make it a talk show, and hope to get him to some level of self-awareness Out of universe - (38:39) Does someone like this get a therapist who looks like them, or one who pushes their boundaries of comfort? Skit (NSFW warning) (46:28) DOC: Hello Homelander, I'm Dr. Issues. HOMELANDER: Good afternoon, Doc. I appreciate all mental health professionals. I may wear a cape, but you're a true hero. D: Thanks for that. H: So how long you been with the company? D: Company? H: Vought. I figure it has something to do with the casualties from our last appearance. Real shame those people were in the car. Unfortunately, those terrorists were too far away for me to get to in time, and I had to throw SOMEthing at them. D: I don't work… wait, what? H: You know how it is. Bad guys with guns. So I had to make a choice. There was a car nearby, so I threw it at the terrorists. Wasn't until I heard the screams that I realized it wasn't empty. And super though I may be, I'm only so fast. I mean, I'm no A-Train, that's for sure. D: Oh no...I've met many first responders who have had to make snap judgements like that, but not with such...force. H: Yeah, they're usually crybabies about it. I got over that s**t a long time ago.  D: So you really don't care that there may have been any other way to handle  life and death situations? H: Do you have any real suggestions? I can see someone like you acting all Monday morning quarterback, but who really gets their hands dirty? D: I'm not disrespecting you by asking to expand your thought process. You said you respect mental health professionals, right? H: Real professionals, yeah. D: What's that supposed to mean? H: Someone who got where they are through hard work and dedication, not just to fill some quota. You know, like we do with the Deep. D: Glad I have the GPA and scholarships to prove it then. Unless you think the people important enough to run this operation would place any random quack in here to talk to you. H: Anyway, I'm sure the paperwork monkeys have all that taken care of. I'll do some talk show appearances, a photo op with the family members of the… Johnsons? Johnstons? Johnbergs? Ah, who the f**k cares.  D: Homelander, I'm sorry, I think there's been a misunderstanding. I don't work for Vought. H: Oh. Then why the f**k am I talking to you then? D: You are right, it's because those people died, though.  H: Well like I said, their fault they were nearby.  D: Oh my God, how does anyone believe you're a hero? H: Because I save poor bastards like you all the time. D: OK, I'm done pretending. Homelander, you are under arrest by the United State military in conjunction with the deaths of four civilians, along with mass property damage. I am here to assess your competence prior to trial. H: What. The. F**k. D: And to ensure your cooperation, you have been placed inside an energy field, which I might as well reveal to you now. *energy hum* H: Are you f**king kidding me? D: So now that we've gotten that out of the way H: You listen to me, you pencil pushing c*******er. You have no goddamn right to keep me here, and I assure you as soon as I get out the FIRST f**king thing I'm doing is ramming my fist so far down your throat you'll be able to chew out your own ass for being so f**king r******d. D: So since you're being detained, I don't need to tell you that this is meant as therapy to improve anything. You've already given me the information I need to make a decision as to whether or not you're dangerous. H: You're goddamn right I'm dangerous. I'm the most powerful f**king thing on the planet. There's no God, there's just me. And all you worthless peons can suck my asshole. D: At this point, due to your severe agitation, I'm required to ask if you have any history of medication that has helped you to stay calm and perhaps relax for a while. H: I relax by jerking off. And when I'm done killing you, I'll jerk off on your f**king corpse.  D: Duly noted. Then it's my selection with regards to… hmm… how do we deliver medication to an invulnerable being? H: You aren't going to deliver S**T, do you understand? For someone who's supposedly smart enough to graduate whatever degree mill you came from, you're f**king oblivious to how utterly F**KED you are when I break this field. There isn't a thing that can hold me forever. And the fact that you haven't run away screaming means you're even dumber than you look, you stupid ni- D: Alright, that's enough of that. I was entertaining you up to this point, because your blustering isn't all that uncommon in my area of practice. But the racism is a special kind of heinous. So with that, we're done here. H: No, we're not done. You can walk away, but I promise, I will find you, and I *punch* will *punch* end *punch* you. D: Good luck with that. H: F**K YOU! AHHHHH! *punch* *shatter* D: Oh s*** H: *punch* *gory sound effects* I told you I'd kill you. And now to relax. *zip* *masturbates furiously* What the F**K did I tell you? Jessica Albrecht busts the founding myths of 19th century Buddhist revivalism, through a Statue of Colonel Henry Steel Olcott at Fort Railway Station in Sri Lanka, the former British colony of Ceylon. Known as the 'White Buddhist', US Colonel Henry Steel Olcott is celebrated for sparking Sri Lanka's Buddhist revival movement in 1880s. Golden statues scatter across the island in tribute to the co-founder of the Theosophical Society, the source of religious and educational reform and resistance to British colonial rule in Ceylon. But these statues also pose complex post-colonial questions, like whether Olcott's book, The Buddhist Catechism, was anything but 'Protestant Buddhism', or his schools simply new institutions of external control. Instead of pulling Olcott down, his statues invite us to figure out those silenced in the archives, whether the non-white Buddhists of the Panadura Debate, or the women behind Ceylon's girls schools - without whom Olcott would not have the same standing today. Becky discusses the current Marketplace Special Enrollment Period and how her team can assist consumers as they navigate the Marketplace. Please note that there have been some changes since our original recording: The current administration is extending access to the Special Enrollment Period until August 15th. “Every American deserves access to quality, affordable health care – especially as we fight back against the COVID-19 pandemic,” said HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra. “Through this Special Enrollment Period... the American have the chance they need to find an affordable health care plan that works for them. The American Rescue Plan will bring costs down for millions of Americans, and I encourage consumers to visit HealthCare.gov and sign up for a plan before August 15.” As a result of the American Rescue Plan, additional savings will be available for consumers through HealthCare.gov starting April 1. These savings will decrease premiums for many. On average, one out of four enrollees on HeathCare.gov will be able to upgrade to a higher plan category that offers better out of pocket costs at the same or lower premium compared to what they're paying today. For assistance with exploring you coverage options and enrolling in coverage for 2021, please call our Outreach and Enrollment Team at 513.707.9901 to schedule an appointment. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/healthsource-of-ohio/message

Episode Notes Form: https://forms.gle/XY41oQSrGpBBxEXD8 [“Don’t Tell Me Your Major Theme” By Malena Ramnath] Malena: Hey guys! My name is Malena Ramnath. Hannah: I'm Hannah Fredly. M: And we are your hosts and sophomores here at Northwestern. This is Don't Tell Me Your Major, an interview podcast where we avoid getting to know people on the surface level with questions like what their major is, where they're from, and how old they are, but try to get to know them on a more profound level. That's how you really get to know the kind of person someone is rather than judging them based on pre-established stereotypes. So today, it's just the two of us because last episode, we had a guest. So today, it's just us, the hosts, me and Hannah. And today, we really wanted to talk about the idea of imagination, because it's COVID still. We're still stuck inside. It's a panda-nemic. And I think our imagination can oftentimes be our only escape from this kind of stuff. Right? So, my first question for us to answer here on our podcast today is did you ever have any imaginary friends when you were little Hannah? H: So this is gonna be a really boring answer, but I did not actually. I knew a lot of people who did and I have some funny stories, but I myself never had one.  M: Okay, at least give me a funny story about it. H: So I had a friend back home, who used to have an imaginary friend. And so when she was little, she was walking down the street and she used to talk to her imaginary friend. And so she would tell me that people low key thought she was crazy sometimes because she would like, talk into thin air. M: Oh my gosh, like I couldn't do that. I couldn't just talk into thin air. That being said, though, I definitely imagine that my  stuffed animals and teddy bears have personalities. I still kind of do. I think it's a remnant from Toy Story being a thing. I  definitely, you know, had my teddy bears and they have personalities. You know, my boyfriend isn't necessarily so happy about the fact that I'm still a five-year-old inside, but that was – they were like my imaginary friends. You know? Also because my parents never really bought me – maybe it's like a gender stereotype thing, but also, I didn't mind it – they just never, I never even really had  Barbies, or like, Legos or anything. I just had a million teddy bears. So yeah, I guess it was safer, child-safety-wise, to just surround me with soft, plush things.  H: Yeah, actually, you want to know something funny? So back home, in Norway, I used to have like a, like a fat big drawer only full of teddy bears. And there were some teddy bears that was like, they were too big to fit in the drawer and be like huge giraffes, like the size of my body, my little child body, like big bears, like the size. And if I put them all on my bed, I wouldn’t have space for myself in the bed.  M: Yeah, I know exactly. We would my sister and I would like, oh my gosh, this is so silly. She's gonna hate me for saying this on the podcast. But we would do this thing called a dolly hash, where we would take all of our stuffed animals combined - easily at one point, like 100 of them - we would (consumerism at its finest), we would cover our living room in them. And there's photos of me and my sister just passed out and you can't see the carpet. It’s the two of us, like asleep on our teddy bears and our parents like “What have we created?” H: I'm not gonna lie. If I were a parent and I came home to that I'd be thoroughly terrified. M: But imagination comes in a lot of different ways. I think we all have like daydreams about, you know, from our imaginary friends to like our dream jobs and things like that. And I think that plays into this question that I've had for a long time of like, idealism versus realism, because I feel like, you know, for me, I'm more of a cynic. I would say I'm more of a realist, I've always seen idealists as kind of living in their imagination, like, “Oh, you know, I'm gonna be like, some big, you know, music artist or something.” You know? And that's often sometimes like really hard to achieve fame in. And for me, that's part of living in their daydreams – living in their imagination. There's not something as real about it as like, having a structured salary, like the classic, you know, go to college, earn, like, six figures, you know, just go on to whatever you need to do next. So like, do you think that there's, like, idealism isn't what people should look for in life, especially in this day and age? Or do you think it's more, it's better to be an idealist than a realist? H: Okay, so I think there's value in ideal - I think, first of all balance of two. But I think there's value in idealism in the sense that you're much more likely to achieve something if you believe yourself that you will achieve it. So I sort of believe in the law of attraction and of how, if you really believe that you're going to do well on this test, then odds are you're going to do well. If you go out with the mindset of like, “Oh, I'm never going to achieve this anyways”, then the odds that you ever achieve it are so much lower. So idealism has value in the sense that like, if you're shooting so far, so high, and you're like, “I know for sure that later in life, I will achieve this, I will get this job, I will, like, be able to work with this and this and this”, then, even though it might not be fully accomplished, it still makes it more likely that it will happen just by you believing it. M: No, and I think there's definitely something to be said for that. And I think that there should never...it should never really be because I had to kind of check myself. I have friends who were real idealists. I'm such a cynic, such a realist. I–I'm very much of the mind that you have to make money and then follow your passions. You know, like make money, build yourself that nest egg, build your family that nest egg, and then go...paint. That's what, that's what I kind of grew up learning as well. And some people definitely have that mindset. But I think there's something that's braver about going to follow your passion so that you're not going into work every day doing something you hate, doing something that's not making a change in the world. I think like you said, it's everything in moderation. It's about finding that balance between what you're passionate about, and like, what's gonna make you money because, like, I read this statistic the other day that said - it was on UberFacts. So you know, obviously take this as what you will. But if you – happiness, sorry, money can buy happiness, if it's up to $70,000. Right? Yeah, once you hit that $70,000 a year mark, you're going to be – pretty much plateau of happiness, thanks to your money. And it's – your happiness is going to come through other things like love and family and when you're not thinking about your survival anymore.  H: Yeah cause this is what, like Maslow's Pyramid of Needs.  M: Yeah.  H: It's like, if you can get a nice shelter, enough to buy you the food you want to buy, and everything like that, then that's covered by money. Self actualization, like your social life, that can't be bought by money. M: No, yeah, exactly. And so I think in that way, your imagination, like thinking about, “Oh, what can my passion be?”, like having – I think when you're little, having the freedom to explore that is also really interesting. Rather than just like, since you're five, being told you're going to be a doctor, when you grow up, you know? H: You know what else I think is really important that our generation kind of loses sight of sometimes, is that there's such a big dialogue about nowadays, “Oh, you should be doing your passion, you should be doing, like, living your fullest self at every moment.” And like, for a lot of people, they don't know what their passion is. I think too many people worry about if they're doing the right thing. Worry less about if you're doing the right thing, because at a certain point you stop – you stop living. If there's, you're like, “Oh, am I doing the right thing by doing a math major? Like maybe I'd be happier in statistics? Maybe…” You start asking yourself too many questions, then you get paralyzed by the choice. It's like, stop worrying all the time, if you're doing exactly the right thing, because things will turn out fine. M: Yeah, I really like that mentality. I think it is really applicable to the college student mindset, you know, in just that, like, it's so many kids are just like, “Oh, I'll figure it out eventually,” because they're like, paralyzed exactly by like, the amount of options that are open to them. Um, but okay, we've had, the deep conversation about, you know, what we kind of want to be when we grow up in terms of mindset, right? When you were a kid, what was your favorite imagination game. Because I also talked about, you know, games that build creativity in kids because I think that's something that is education is becoming going to focus more on -  what was your like, when you were little like, what was your favorite imagination game? Like, did you play house? Did you play dress up? Like, what would you do that was an imagination game? H: Oh, so me, my sister or me and my cousin's. It's always with the cousins, by the way, for some reason. We would like create these like fake little shops on our roofs, we'd make like stands. And then we invite our whole family to like, come by our stands and pretend they were buying like stuff from us. So we'd like pretend we were a bakery. Pretend we were like a jewelry store, stuff like that. M: Oh my gosh, we literally – Okay, so I was I would do this daycare program after I finished elementary school because we'd finished the day of like, fifth grade, but my parents couldn't pick me up till 5pm when they got off work. So, I'd stay after school and we’d play like games. And there's like 20 other of my best friends who were like also doing it. Not that I had 20 best friends but you know, Miss Popular in fifth grade. But regardless, we literally did this, it was called Mini City. And like all the other kids were like actually doing things with their imagination. They were like drawing, they're like making necklaces. They were like, you know, giving out fake whatever. Because it was just like, they gave you fake money and you had to go to the different stands. But like, with people's businesses were all imagination based, like there are no real products. And I was like, I found a niche in the market. And I got all my friends together and we made a giant stand that looked like a cupcake out of like the reusable cardboard in the dumpster. Why we were - I literally so much is wrong with this. But then, my, we – I got like all the parents to like bake stuff for their kids to bring in and we were the only people selling like genuine products that anybody wanted to the point where we had so much money that our like toy cash register was overflowing and this is all fake money provided by the daycare people. But then, at the end, this is a distinct memory and maybe why I'm an econ major today is we laid the money. We're so much money, we laid it all over the floor, threw it up in the air and then rolled around in it. The big money. And I think that’s why I’m an econ major. H: Business mindset, you were a hardo from day one.  M: Oh, no, dude, I feel so exposed right now. But okay, okay, last question. I think that it comes off of that really well is so when you're kid you kind of have like the stars in your eyes and maybe it does relate a little to the idealism realism thing, but do you feel like, I feel like so many things nowadays, they're like, “Oh, we want creativity in the workplace. We want imagination in the workplace to come up with innovative solutions.” But do you think like, you know, when you're in a job in the future, you're really going to be using your imagination? H: You know, it's an interesting question, I think it's kind of linked to AI in a certain way, or like, automization. So, computers are really good at brute forcing stuff, like going through stuff in a systematic method. And humans are very good at being creative. So they complement each other very well. So all the jobs that are non-creative can be taken over more or less, and humans are creative. And so that's how we compliment it. So I think more and more we’ll be creative in the workplace in the future. M: I think so, too. And I think like, you know, I go to whatever, I'm in a peer tutoring program. And so I go to a lot of these professional development, education seminars and stuff. And the more I read about the education process, the more I realized that kids are falling short because they're not taught to be creative. They're just taught to get the best GPA. Coming out of, I graduated from high school in Singapore. And so when I was growing up in my education system, it was all about memorization, memorization, memorization, and now I come to Northwestern. And it's a struggle for me, because so much of like, the education here is about problem solving, and like creativity, and like coming up with your own themes in ambiguous situations. And so you're right, I think that it's something that's like really very much the future of who's going to excel and who's not going to, you know. H: Yeah, I fully agree. I think it's more important to teach kids problem solving rather than memorization. M: Yeah, exactly. Well, unfortunately, that was a bit abrupt of an ending, but that is all the time we have left for today. Hannah, thank you for being here. And you know, we are hosts telling you guys a little bit more about what we think of imagination in our daily lives. And I hope that, you know, you guys had some time to think about it, and feel free to drop your thoughts about it into the Google form at the top of our Spotify description, because we'd love to hear from our listeners. And hope that you have a spectacular week. This has been Don't Tell Me Your Major, an NBN audio podcast. Have a good one. [“Don’t Tell Me Your Major Theme” By Malena Ramnath]

Welcome to Finance and Fury, the Say What Wednesday edition. This week’s question is from Shaf – “I would like to get your opinion/analysis on Australia’s ageing population, and investment opportunities that are linked to this segment of the market. For example, companies like CGF or publicly listed aged care providers.” Great question – This style of investing is along the lines of Thematic investing Thematic investing involves creating a portfolio or investing in companies involved in certain areas that you think will generate above-market returns over the long term All based on Themes – which can be based on a concept such as ageing populations or a sub-sector such as leisure Thematic can be any theme – green energy, AI or technology Aging population has been a big one for a while – first saw it come into mainstream in late 2010 Because of Australian and western nations aging populations - many developed nations are facing an ageing population - While the issue might pose some economic challenges- it has been thought of as opportunities for companies and investments into those companies “demographic time bomb” – what does it look like 1950s - across the globe, there were on average 12 people in the workforce to support each dependent. By 2050, this ratio is predicted to contract to roughly 5:1 Ageing populations are driven by increasing life expectancy and falling birth rates - typically seen in nations that have held ‘developed’ status for several decades In Australia – ABS data - currency 100 workers in the population for every 50 dependents By 2066 -Australia’s population estimated to be 50 million, there may be as many as 70 dependents for every 100 workers projected that the number of Australians aged 65 and over would more than double by 2055, compared with 2015 by 2100, it’s estimated that there will be more people aged 100 or more years than babies born in that year This demographic shift will see the public purse put under increasing strain, as a greater share of the population exit the workforce and become reliant on the government for care, medication and housing  But the question still remains – is there opportunity for investors to profit from this trend? Yes and no - Keeping an older generation fit and healthy requires significant investment in certain areas such as healthcare and technology – so having some exposure in your portfolio to stocks tapped into this sector and their healthcare counterparts, may make sense – but what areas can be invested in and how to do it? This isn’t advice – not taking personal situation into account – Major areas that may benefit – asset managers, healthcare, pharma, age care, biotech and leisure companies Side note – these predictions and forecasts on aging population demographics are long term – numbers by 2050 – and require steady growth – don’t think of this as a quick investment trade to make money - come back to this Health care - The health caresector is the most obvious beneficiary of the ageing population trend. greater population of older people, there is naturally an increased demand for health care services, equipment and supplies. Deloitte analysts predict spending on healthcare will grow around 4.1% p.a. – Growth rates forecasted above GDP growth – so if this continues the right company could beat the market also government health expenditure is expected to reach 13% of GDP by 2049-2050, up from its current levels of around 7%. demographic is likely to have implications and opportunities for investment markets Pharmaceuticals - the pharmaceuticals industry will see sizeable growth as the median age shifts towards later life Studies in the US showthat 75% of individuals aged between 50-64 use at least one prescription drug regularly – same study shows that this figure rises to 91% for 80+ age bracket. This is paralleled by the dramatic increase in the number of drugs consumed by older people the 50-64 bracket in the US held prescriptions for around 13 medicines, this number rises to around 22 for patients in the 80+ age category These figures, when put into the context of an ageing population show decent long term prospects for drug and medicine producers – especially with the thematic of medical industry in general – more profitable to treat symptoms than cure Side note – medicinal cannabis on the pharmaceuticals scene are the growing - a range of pain relief and alternative therapeutics Aged-care - Retirees' living arrangements can also change as they age - move into retirement villages, then shift into residential aged care when their ability to look after themselves diminishes If this trend continues = see an increase in demand for residential aged care – so the aged-care industry is also one that should benefit from the ageing population and rising spending – this sector it is well-represented on the stock exchange But has its problems – more recently suffered from recent negative publicity concerning care practices, culminating in the announcement in September 2018 of a Royal Commission into the sector – work off tight spreads now that pricing caps got introduced and sit on the capital – so are rather volatile Biotech – medical research and Modern medicine The other part of the profound demographic trend of an ageing population is that with advances in modern medicine – aims are in general to not just make Australians live longer, they are enjoying more years in good health Lots of smaller companies with new promising technologies However - Investing in Australian biotechnology companies may present a level of risk and is generally a longer-term investment proposition High level of R&D - because the treatments must pass a number of stages of clinical trials in order to reach federal approval So a lot of these companies fall into the category of investing out of hopes as many don’t have solid cashflows with many income streams – example ACR (Acrux) – where I invested out of hope in 2014- Price went from $4 to $1 – so I jumped in – price drops was off bad news – but then prices bounced back to $2.20 – thought I was a genius – then over time the technology never took off and price went to $0.15 – learnt from this Also faces legislation risks - Stem cell applications for treating osteoarthritis have already seen significant pickup in Japan - the nation currently experiencing the worstageing population crisis – but are open to ethical and legal risks Leisure - As Australia’s transition into retirement – there may be an increase in leisure, travel – but also general entertainment spending – going out and dining Travel spending, which is comparatively highly in Australia, increases year on year for adults until age 45, after which it plateaus – but if larger populations – then more people spending But after a certain age this spending declines – generally after 75s Asset managers - retirees are also expected to live longer - which does increase longevity risk - the risk retirees will outlive their savings - creates opportunities for financial services providers to come up with products to provide income streams to retirees - Here is where Challenger falls in - One of the major challenges facing Australia's retirees and ageing population is provision of retirement income streams where Challenger has lots of annuity products and guaranteed products - Older articles on this claims that Challenger's Life segment offers fixed-rate retirement and superannuation products, which are growing strongly and will continued to do so. In 2014 - annuity sales growth was 38 per cent to $1.5 billion - But was banking off the rush to lock in annuities prior to the changes in legislation to Centrelink treatment – Risk to challenger is that is focuses on the retiree markets – and products lack flexibility super has changed since then as well – competition from other asset managers – and at risks of market crashes as these companies make money off FUM – due to administration costs – Out of these options – asset managers outside of challenger wouldn’t be a thematic for aging population – as they draw down not accumulate – it would be better to focus on accumulators as a these if you want to look at this as an option How to invest - Direct companies on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) ASX hosts Australia’s global healthcare shares including those developing medical devices for sleeping and hearing as well as plasma based therapies – also has access to private hospital operators in Australia, some of the biggest in the world. Other major domestic stocks include private hospital and medical centre operators as well as pathology, medical diagnostics, and pharmacy networks. Issues – themes can be wrong – but also Selecting individual winners amongst the heard Example - ASX – article back in 2014 to illustrate this – Japara Healthcare - Japara Healthcare owns and operates residential aged care facilities. It has 35 facilities and four retirement complexes throughout Victoria, South Australia, NSW and Tasmania. The company is highly dependent on government funding but the ageing population will continue to drive demand. At the moment there are just over 420,000 Australians aged 85 or over, or 2 per cent of the population. That is expected to more than double to 5 per cent by 2061. - Many investors would have seen the strong share market debut from residential aged care operator, Japara Healthcare, in mid-April 2014 – when it listed stock closed its first day at $2.70, some 35 per cent above its $2 listing price. Issued in 2014 – at around $2.70 – sitting at $0.5 Another one was gateway lifestyle – listed – did well for a bit but then "GTY" delisted as of 26/11/2018 Healthscope - Healthscope is Australia's second-largest private hospital operator, with 41 hospital. It also has a big pathology business with 578 collection centres, 69 laboratories and 46 medical centres. The company originally floated on ASX in 1994 but was bought and taken private by private equity players TPG and The Carlyle Group in 2010, and recently returned to the market in a $3.6-billion listing – then "HSO" delisted as of 11/06/2019 Primary Health Care - Primary Health Care is another play on increasing demand for medical services from an older population. It operates medical centres as well as health technology, pathology and diagnostic imaging services - Now is HLS Healius Ltd - Was at about $4.50 – now at about $3 – was trending downwards for 6 years Invocare - Invocare is the largest funeral, cemetery and crematorium industry operator in Australia, New Zealand and Singapore. It operates national brands such as White Lady. The company says the growing ageing population will increase the annual death rate from 1 per cent a year, to 2.7 per cent per annum by 2033 - $10.50 – now about the same Have been some good ones – Ramsay Health Care - Ramsay is the largest operator of private hospitals in Australia and one of the leading operators of private hospitals in the UK and France. The company is well placed to benefit from increasing private health insurance membership and an ageing population - Went through a meteoric rise from early 2000s till 2016 – stalled out since as PE and revenues have been catching up Sonic Healthcare - Sonic operates in three segments: pathology, radiology and corporate office functions/medical centre operations. The company provides medical diagnostics, laboratory and radiology services to medical practitioners, hospitals, community health services, and their collective patients. It also operates Australia's largest network of primary care medical centres - Independent Practitioner Network - as well as other healthcare businesses. – Have been a good growth prospect – pay out okay dividends – Other options - Global healthcare indexes - One way to gain exposure to the healthcare industry is via exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Several ETF issuers have created vehicles that track global healthcare indices – allows you to diversify and pick up Aus and International shares with access to these themes – purchase some of the world’s largest listed pharmaceutical companies, medical device makers and healthcare companies in one ETF There are some risks – currency risks and also the nature of ETFs with their structuring – but a more diversified way A lot of these ETFs look like they have had great returns over the past few years – a lot of that has been the devaluation of the AUD to USD – so just watch out for that – might look like companies have been doing well – but in reality major driving factor for returns has been currency   In Summary - Australia’s ageing population will potentially provide tailwinds for decades to come to the economy – but can provide for additional sectors of returns – from boosting the demand for drugs, surgeries, medical devices, private hospitals, medical centres and aged-care facilities, as well as services such as nursing, pathology and radiology But Remember as well – all of this is priced into these shares – it was priced in and then they don’t perform as well – or competitors come in and they sink Industry saw massive booms back at the listing of a lot of these companies – for payoffs that may take decades – so many lost steam and values and delisted in the end Nothing wrong with investing in thematic – but not fully - All because something might sound good – might not be fundamental or it might already all be priced in based around forecasts buying stocks on the basis of a long-trend trend is a dangerous strategy if underlying value is ignored. Time will tell the full extent to which Australia’s ageing population will catalyse growth in the health care, biotechnology, pharmaceutical and leisure sectors. If you are looking at getting into the theme – probably better to select an ETF and to be patient – but know you are investing for the long term and that the growth of these industries is already priced into the shares Doesn’t mean that they still wont keep going up though Thanks for the question – anyone else Thank you for listening to today's episode. Episode Notes DTMYM Ep. 1 Transcript Malena: Hey guys, my name is Malena.Allison: I’m Allison.Hannah: My name’s Hannah.M: And we are your hosts and freshmen here at Northwestern. This is Don’t Tell Me Your Major, an interview podcast where we avoid getting to know people on the surface level, with questions like what their major is, where they’re from, and how old they are, but try to get to know them on a more profound level. That’s how you really know the kind of person someone is rather than judging them on pre-established stereotypes. Today it’s just us, the co-hosts, so you guys can get to know us a little more before we start talking to others! And, um, just an update, all of us have the freshman plague.A: Sorry, I’m hacking my lungs out. M: Yeah, so if you hear us coughing, that’s why. But the first order of business – the first question I’m going to ask is: If you had to get a tattoo right now, what would it be? Allison, you’re up first.A: Okay, I’ve actually planned this for a really long time. My 18th birthday is coming up, and I’m going to get a little music note, like an eighth note, tattooed on the inside of my middle finger in white ink so that my parents don’t see it. So don’t tell my mom, ‘cause I’m not allowed to have a tattoo, because I’m going to get disowned. But, yeah I’ve been planning on getting that for a long time.H: The ones on the inside of your fingers –A: They’re so pretty.H: They rub off though.A: I know, that’s the point, like –H: Oh! You’re not going to show it to anyone.A: Yeah, yeah, yeah, just in case my mom ever catches me, like, in a couple years it’ll be faded so it won’t be a big deal. H: So I wanted to get a matching tattoo with my sister, but I’m scared, because whenever we fight, I’d be like “f**k you!” but then you have them tattooed on your body.M: I love that, I love that. Ok, so mine is like, I wanted to get this tattoo that’s like a circle but like it isn’t closed. So it’s a circle that almost closes but doesn’t –A: That’s so unsatisfactory.M: No, I know, but the whole point is–A: I wouldn’t want that! M: The whole point is that like, there’s this quote I like that says, “some things don’t come full circle.” And it’s just getting used to things not going your way. H: That’s much deeper than ours. A: I was about to say that! I was like, “I want a music note.” And she was like, “some things, they just don’t come full circle.”M: Ok, ok.A: We’re the bad co-hosts right here.M: Oh my gosh. No, ok so, my next question is, what is your favorite thing about yourself? Do you guys know, off the top of your head?A: Nose goes! M: Nose goes?A: Alright Hannah you’re up.H: Ummm, hair, it’s flowy and long.M: Is it like, annoying to blow out though?H: Yeah, yeah, so annoying.A: You know she never blow dries her hair?M: Really? Oh, we have an audience member, just so you guys know. A: Yeah, my roommate. She just lives with wet hair. I don’t know how she does it.M: I never blow dry my hair either. But it’s because mine is like, shoulder length, so it’s not a big deal. A: Oh it is?M: Yeah.A: I thought it was long. M: No it’s not that long. But anyways I think my favorite thing about myself is... I like my eyebrows. A: You do have nice eyebrows.M: They’re a lot of work, but I never have to fill them in. Like I feel so bad for people who have to fill in their eyebrows.H: Okay, okay! Fine. A: Your eyebrows are fine too, what do you mean?M: Okay, what about you Allison?A: My favorite thing...I guess is that I’m not an awkward person, so like it has saved me from many a potentially awkward situation. Y’know? So yeah, I feel like I’m pretty chill.M: Yeah, that’s fair. I love that I said my eyebrows. Like my personality sucks, like it just sucks. A: Jesussss. M: No. Ok. What can you not live without? Like what is the one thing you can’t live without? And it can be basic.A: Does it have to be a material object?M: Do maybe one material object and one non-material object.A: (under breath) Are my boobs showing?H: Nobody can see them!M: This is a podcast, Allison. A: I meant to you! But ok. Material – WAIT why am I always going first, you go!M: Ok, ok. H: I don’t know. I wanted to say something funny, but I don’t want to say something stupid like oxygen, water. Censor BeepM: Hannah! You can’t say that word! Oh my gosh. A: Beep.M: We’re gonna have to censor that. A: Sorry guys, we’re not American. M: Yeah so, some context is, the reason why we all know each other is we’re all international kids. A: Ok shut up Malena, you’re American. Hannah and I are not. Please forgive us if we say something un-PC.M: Okay so one thing I couldn’t live without is kind of like, my international friends. That’s one of my deeper answers –A: (sarcastically) I don’t feel the same way.M: (sarcastically) She could just get rid of us. (continued from before) ...Because I like having a wide worldview. Like a worldview where I could know people from all around the world and get their perspectives. And they all have such different lifestyles that it’s so much fun to hang out with them because there’s always something new to do and always good new food to eat. What about you guys?A: What’s your material thing?M: Uh, probably my phone.A: Yeah.M: I’m pretty addicted to Snapchat. H: Yeah, it’s true, phone. A: Ok, I’m going to think of something less shallow than that. So what’s your other thing?H: Yeah, I couldn’t live without friends. That would just suck.A: Oh really, would it now?M: Nah, I always wanted to become a hermit. That was my thing. Just be a hermit. A: Um, I would say I can’t live without music. I’m constantly listening to music, my airpods always run out of battery. Umm... I’m trying to think of a material thing. Like, I don’t know.M: Well, can I just say... Can we have a quick tangent? Airpods are like the biggest scam. Like the fact that the headphone jack is the same as your charging jack on your Apple phone, and then you can’t plug them into your laptop. And then you have to charge your airpods, and they’re like 100 dollars…A: Well that’s not –H: Yeah, no I agree.A: You don’t have to connect your Airpods to your computer. It’s bluetooth.M: Yeah I know but they’re always running out of battery and they cost like 200 dollars.A: The battery lasts like five hours how long are you listening to music??H: When you’re on the plane, if you’re like a long long plane ride…A: Oh! When I’m on the plane I use like the ones with the wires, but Airpods for the casual walking around the streets. H: I dislike them. So this is a funny story, but I had Airpods for a while, and I didn’t actually buy them. I FOUND them. A: YOU FOUND THEM?H: I found them.M: Oh no, you’re THAT person. H: So my mom found them, on the beach. Somewhere…A: Ok well you know what, they probably weren’t going to come back for them anyways. You might as well have kept them. H: And we were trying to ask around people, if they were theirs, because we had some friends there. Couldn’t find them. So we just kept them, disinfected them, and my mom was like –A: Disinfected them???M: Just have random people’s –H: I’m not going to have their ears in my ears!A: Your ears in their ears?H: And, long story short, I realized I don’t like airpods. Prefer the headphones.M: The Ancients.A: I like to put my phone in my back pocket when I’m walking, and to have that cord – it like rips out of my ears if I move the wrong direction and I get so f**cking frustrated, so [Airpods] are nice to have.H: I also heard this thing about airpods giving you cancer or whatever.A: Yeah dude, everything gives you cancer.M: Dude, just live in a bubble.A: Yeah, like bacon, everything gives you cancer.M: Ok. Speaking of, we’ve been eating cheerios in the background if you guys are hearing chewing noises. I don’t know how great this mic is but maybe you’re hearing chewing noises right now –A: Hannah just dropped a hairball on my lap.M: OH MY GOSH YOU GUYS. A: Guys this is her most treasured possession, so like –H: Long hair, you just leave a trail of hair everywhere you go.M: Yeah that’s her favorite trait guys: her hairballs.A: Yeah, Sammie and I always have to vacuum our room, because like my hair is everywhere. M: Oh my gosh. Yeah are you guys really excited to listen to other episodes of this podcast now? We’re really great people. But so basically we were eating cheerios on the side and that led me to my next question: what is your favorite snack?A: Myself.H: Cinnamon Toast Crunch.M: Oh my gosh guys. Allison you are hereby banned from this podcast. Her favorite snack is herself. Oh my gosh.H: Actually something weird though, peanut butter and fruit. So, I never liked peanut butter because I wasn’t from the U.S. M: So only Americans can like peanut butter?H: No but it’s a very American thing to like peanut butter.A: Yeah, yeah. Yeah it is.H: So I came to the U.S. and I hated it. Two weeks into being in America, I love it. Love peanut butter.A: Have you ever had like, the Rx bars? H: No.A: Um, ok. M: It’s like a kind of granola bar they call Rx bars. A: But then they make peanut butter and it’s like honey cinnamon flavor and it’s so – you should try it. But my favorite snack is... myself. Well actually, no. I would say, ramen. M: OOOOO. Ramen’s a good snack. A: Yeah, but not like the shy kind that Malena eats, like the fking cup noodle top ramen s*t.M: HEY! That’s good s**t.A: No no no no no. You have to have like shin ramyun.M: That’s good Korean ramen, for those uncultured people out there. Just kidding, I had no idea what it was until like two months ago.H: I had no idea what it was. A: Uncultured.M: I think mine is... I like a solid pretzel crisp and hummus. Um, I mess with that. I also mess with dry Cinnamon Toast Crunch.A: You mess with it?M: You know what.A: You mess with it?M: Ok. It slaps.A: You haven’t had it in a hot minute?M: Um, and then so I like some Cinnamon Toast Crunch.A: Can. M: Some dry Cinnamon Toast Crunch is really good. Oh my gosh they’re making – you guys will get used to my catchphrases eventually. So my last question for this podcast, we’re going to wrap things up, is what makes you feel most empowered? We’re going to wrap it up on a positive note, get everyone empowered on this podcast, our listeners. A: What does empowered mean? Like I know what it means but in what context?M: Mine is my bad b*h playlist. A: In what capacity – oh.M: Definitely. If I’m walking and am having a trash day, and I put on some J Cole, I can walk anywhere, I can do anything.A: J Cole qualifies as bad b*h?M: Like the song that’s like “count it up, count it up, count it up, count it.” A: His songs are so mellow!M: No, some of his songs are mellow, but some of his songs are hype, so his hype songs. Some cupcakKe, I don’t know, Lizzo, anyways. Lizzo’s kinda mainstream.A: cupcakKe, like Deep Throat? M: Yeah. Like there’s a song called Deep Throat by cupcakKe.A: Hannah was supposed to make me a bad b*h playlist but she never did because she was preoccupied.H: So I make bad b*h playlists for all my friends who are sad about boys. A: And you didn’t make me one! I didn’t get one!M: She owes a bunch of people bad b*h playlists. A: I’m sad. M: Update: We all have broken hearts.A: I was sad, where is my playlist?H: I’m gonna make you one.A: Oh but I’m over it now, so there’s no use. H: F**k.M: So what made you feel empowered when you were sad about that? What made you feel empowered afterwards?A: Sammie feeding me bagel bites when I was crying, like on my bed, she brought me my towel. She wiped my tears but I got eyeliner on the towel and then she like fed me bagel bites. She was like “ahhhh.”M: Awww.A: No, I would say singing, for me. Yeah. M: Cause Allison’s a really good singer, hopefully she sings on our podcast one day. Alright, you’re up. Last one. What makes you feel most empowered Hannah?H: Music. But like playing music. So I play the piano. M: You do?! How did I not know this??A: You do??H: Yeah!A: Why don’t you play for me?M: See guys? This is getting to know people!H: That’s pretty nice. A: Hey Hannah, what’s your major?M: And on that note, let’s end this before we find out each others’ majors. Thank you guys so much for listening. Tune in in a couple weeks and we’ll have someone else to talk to. This has been Don’t Tell Me Your Major on NBN Audio. Thanks so much. This podcast is powered by Pinecast.

Barockmusik över stock och sten, där taglet ryker och more is more. Musiken/klangerna sitter liksom i kroppen. Enligt kanadensiska filmen The Red violin blandade Stradivarius in blod från sin i barnsäng avlidna hustru i lacken.   Spellista: Kärlekshjärtan Tommie Haglund Canabile Kör. 非常感谢热心听众“沉默基因”对本文稿的贡献! H: AlphaGo's win over one of the world's best Go players has got us wondering about which direction artificial intelligence is heading. Will robots beat humans in areas beyond playing an ancient chess game, or have they already done so? IT industry heavy weights, Jack Ma, Lei Jun and Mark Zuckerberg, have offered their views on the prospects of artificial intelligence at the China Development Forum in Beijing just a couple of days ago. So guys, where are we at right now in terms of artificial intelligence development?N: well, in terms of the story you just mentioned, we’re talking about the computer program AlphaGo which plays the game Go, and it played the game at best five seriesagainst the grandmaster, Lee Sedol, from South Korean, who is one the greatest or the best I think player of the game in the world. And the machine won 4-1 in the final match (HY: It was one victory!) for the human side, isn’t it, so the AlphaGo program has the capacity of learning for itself and learning new strategies as the game goes on, so even if you the game by beating, it can learn how you play, learn you know, your moves, the way you think as a player (HY: oh, Nik!) I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m just repeating the facts.H: You’re very words has set, you know, chills upmyspine, Liu Yan, how do you feel about the situation?L: Ok, this is really quite scary, I have to say, because as Nik mentioned, the victory was actually 4-1, but because it was 3 out of 5, best of 5, so as long as you win 3, then you already nailthe final victory. And as it turned out, AlphaGo, 1-3 in the row, so some people was speculating that, you know,AlphaGo actually, through one game in there, just make humans look better, and because he happened to lose the forth one, you know, the one after 3 in the row, I do also believe that it was possible, he kind of just through that away. And now that, you already have one on the score board, and the final one, and I can play my real, according to my real abilityagain. H: You’ve scared me a second time, as the way you referred to Mr. robotAlphaGo, you use “he”, as if it’s a real person!L: I know, but you know, somethings you just can’t deny, as far as AI is concerned. AI defeated human a long time ago, when it came to chess. And apparently, a lot of people are saying Go is likely the last safe place, because Go is so much more complicated, and needs much more human factors, human thinking, but now, the last place, is also… (HY: The laststraw ofthe world chess play. )it also gone, so, it should be very scary. It should be worried.H: Yes, and I think Nik, you make a really good point, that because the robot can learn, it can learn! Oh my gosh! So can we say that we don’t necessarily know that where the robots are going to arrive at, since it’slike a person that can learn things, and there is sort of cognitive activity going on, and is it fair to say as this way.N: I think, not quite. I think (HY: good, good), it can learn, but you know it developesstrategies when it does something wrong and it can learn how not to do that thing wrong again, the next time, but it doesn’t mean it can apply that acknowledge to anything outside the realms of the games necessarily. (HY: thank you, Nik, Thank you very much.) I also think although Go is a big advancement from chess, and it’s much more complicated game for humans as well as machine to learn how to play, other games where there is a kind of hidden aspect, like poker for example, it’s gonna be another kind of milestone, ifthe artificial intelligence learns how to do that, because in Go although it is very complicated, you know all the pieces are out on the table though, both side can see them, so it can learn those kind of strategies where if there was more hidden element, where you have to read another person, the opposite player, maybeisn’t quite there yet.L: That’s really a good point, because if you don’t see everything on the table, then you have to rely on watching someone’s facial expressions for example, and trying to figure out what he or she is exactly thinking, and since this was not involved at this stage, it’s relatively easy for the machine to beat the people, because the machine doesn’t have to do all that. And also, I know we have been painting a very scary picture as for, but if you don’t want to be scared, you can just think this way, cause at the end of the day, AlphaGo is still just a computer program, and who design that program? Humans. So computer programs cannot do something that human… if you don’t put it in the program. Then they certainly cannot do that. So as long as you don’t put it in the program for them to be so awesome, so intelligent, the program won’t be so awesome, so intelligent.H: You make a really good point, and also, if we have a directfirmanswer that we can control the robots in the way they so called think and develop, that they’re always in the control of the hands of humans, then I wouldn’t be so scared, but the reason why people like myself who don’t know much about technology, it is very happy to sleep in mycavewithout any advanced technology at my hand, I’m happy to live like that alright, we’re scared because we don’t know where this is going. Guys, what did the tycoons say?And where is this going?N: Mark Zuckerberg from facebook said he predicted there will be more big advances for artificial intelligence in just next decade. So we not quite finished yet in terms of the development. He said the artificial intelligence will understand senses, such as vision and hearing, and grasp language better than human beings over the next 5 to 10 years. And he highlighted the company Oculus VR, saying that it’sgoing to start producing its product virtual reality products and it could generate $110 billion by 2025, so it is a big business as well as artificial intelligence.L: And of course, Lei Jun, who is the founder of Xiaomi, also seems very optimistic. And he said, he expects AI to be able to beat a human champion at the current stage of development since it's a pretty complicated game, and he also said that now that we’re already see that AlphaGo beat human beings, you can expect that it will attract more capital and talent to the AI sector, so obviously, it will be more developed even in the future.N: One for you Heyang, Jack Mar says, there is no need for humans to fear the machines, he says, the machines will be stronger and smarter than human beings, but they will never be wiser, because wisdom, soul and heart are things that only human beings possess, isn’t that beautiful.H: That is beautiful, but you know, the cynic in me says‘Mr. Jack Madoesn’t sound like you know, that much about AI,’ sorry to say this, but because he is saying, OK, wisdom, fine, soul, fine, heart, fine, these aregreat concepts, but if the robot, it’s so clever, and if you can’t control it, this is all presumptions alright, then with the means nothing, if it can surpass you in other ways, and can terminateyou, that is notgonna happen everybody, I’m not going tosend scares or spread that.L: But I do think your worry is kind of valued, I don’t know if you guys have seen the film “her” from a couple of years ago. Scarlett Johansson (HY: oh, she is so hot. Oh, excuse me, I’m going to the wrong direction.) with her computer program, but a guy, played by Joaquin Phoenix, is totally to be able to be attracted just to a computer program, because she has possessed all those qualities, she has heart, she has soul, and she has intelligence, wisdom, so it is possible. And also last year, there was a film called “Ex Machina”, I don’t know if you have seen that, that one is even scarier, because in that one, robots actually were so clever and so manipulative, they eventually killed humans.H: And like so many other Hollywood films, they played with insecurity and anxiety in this area, because we don’t know what’s gonna to happen in the future, and if we are being colonized by robots, that kind of thing. Here on wechat, our listener Lin Yingdong, says I want a robot companion, I mean, girl, why? I’dbe scared, and like Japanese people are known for this, they’ve got a whole bunch of…like robot pet dogs, robot companions, and how could like human emotion be placed in that regard, I mean, I don’t know what is going on here.N: Now, it is a definitely area that you can easily see why people are scared or hate. I think, the more we have this conversation, the more I’m falling into that campas well I think. It is interesting that someone said that they would like a robot companion, I mean, what kind of companionship, someone sit in your house, and like to talk to, can it to talk back?L: This might be off the topic, but you know what this reminds me, it totally reminds me of the “大白”character from the Big Hero 6, (HY: the Baymax) yeah, the Baymax from the Big Hero 6, maybe she was thinking about the robot companion like that. That would be adorable, I would want one like that as well.H: Alright, I’m happy to be your friend, Liu Yan, (Nik: a human being.) Yeah, your blood and fresh, a real person.L: That would be the best, however, a robot could be very cuddly, which not necessarily, you know, human beings can do.H: What? Cuddlier than human beings? LY, What’s going on?L: I’m thinking about Baymax in particular.H: Baymax is cute. But yes, I think the ultimateworry for people is whether this technology can be controlled by people, and I mean, scientists out there that must be the bottom line that I think is really needed here. And just quickilybefore we go on to the next topic guys, a lot of people are saying that so many jobs are just gonna be takenover by robots, and I think a couple of months ago on this show, we talked about that even some of the news stories but news stories, alright, only reporting news without much of human touch, those kind of stories have been written by robot journalists. (Nik: we’re still safe now.) Are we? Are we? So what are the jobs that you think are gonna disappear the landscape from the job market for humans, and how can we deal the situation.L: I think if a job requires a lot of data or to be processed or a great deal of routine to be repeated, then this job probably will be tookoverby robots, because it’s relatively easy. However, if this is a job requires a lot of creative input, for example, if you are an artist, I don’t think that would be easily replaceable by any robots any time soon. So it’s really depends on the quality or the specific requirement of the job.N: Anything, any kind of job where you perform repetitive kind of continuousaction throughout the day doesn’t change that much, I think something robots probably do better in a lot of cases, cause they’re soquick and efficient and also you don’t have to pay them.H: So, yeah, you don’t need to pay for them, but you need to charge the battery probably, keep them connect to the electronic sockets and those kind of things. And yeah, our wechat listener Jessy has something pretty smart to say regarding this topic. She says about the list of jobs that will easily be replaced in the future by the robots has gone viral on wechat right now, and like accountants, security guards, cleaning jobs, and delivering jobs, these things might have no place for humans in the future, but what distinguishes us from robots is that we, as human beings are able to feel stuff, we are not emotionless. So she holds this slightly positive view that is, you know, there is still place for humans as long as humans are in the control position, but it’s going to be hard to defend that position if the technology is that advanced, and I think this is one of those high grounds we have to guard as humans...
