Peter Klepec, general Maister in podobno. »Dam ti, kar želiš, ker si zmogel tolikega sovražnika in otel deželo in mesto velike nadloge in nesreče.

DOC    Just a little bit of broth, mister.  You need to get some o'yer strength back. SICKROOM LEM    [annoyed moan] FANSHAW    You're awake. LEM    [quiet]  Anyone--? FANSHAW    Not close enough to hear - as long as you stay quiet. LEM    Good.  [groan]  I been shot? FANSHAW    At least twice, judging by the bandages.  Once in the chest, once in the leg, I should say.  I should have been watching. LEM    [reassuring] Cain't leave you to do everythin.   Scotty? FANSHAW    When they returned with his body, I saw no sign of him. LEM    Good. FANSHAW    I sincerely hope so.  [awkward pause, then stiffly]  Should I ...go? LEM    Go?  go where? FANSHAW    [covering] I - I mean, leave you in peace.  To rest.  I don't doubt you will still be needing a great deal of it. LEM    [straining a bit]  Did you see, did it go alla way through? FANSHAW    I don't know, but you were very fortunate - or so the doctor declared. LEM    [satisfied]  Good. FANSHAW    I'll leave you to your rest, then, shall I? LEM    I was just thinking out loud, ma'am - uh - you don't seem real worried?  About the gunshots? MRS. DOC    [unconcerned] Oh, that.  My husband just had to run off a couple of unwanted patients. LEM    [baffled] Ma'am? MRS. DOC    Oh, my stars!  You won't even remember!  You were shot, and back in town, you were throwing five fits and comin all over feverish, so Mister Brand, that's my husband - [pride] Doctor Brand, that is - he brought you out here with us. LEM    Out... here? MRS. DOC    Doctor Brand is the only medical man for three counties!  Leastways, the only one that doctors people.  So we get around time to time, and much as he didn't want to move you, he also didn't want to leave you in anyone else's care, poorly as you were.  So we brought you along, and the move seems to have done you right good.  You slept peaceful ever since we got here. LEM    Ah.  You help me to remember to thank him for his concern, would you, ma'am? MRS. DOC    [beaming] I'm sure he'll be pleased enough to hear that you're able to thank him. LEM    And the gunshots--? MRS. DOC    [rueful] Well, you see, the local fellows are having an ..."altercation", and Doctor Brand has refused to aid either side, even if they're near dying, until they patch it up. LEM    Altercation? MRS. DOC    I'm sure he'll tell you about that himself.  You don't need any such concern right now.  What you do need is a good solid cup of broth, and I'll be back in two shakes of a lamb's tail. LEM    You're too kind. SOUND    SHE BUSTLES OUT, DOOR SHUTS LEM    [sigh]  Yeah? FANSAW    The good lady is correct.  You really don't need this concern right now. LEM    [annoyed] It'll fret me more knowin there's sumpin to be concerned about and not bein told what it tis. FANSAW    [slight chuckle] It will, won't it?  Very well, but you lie back down while I regale you.  LEM    [grunt, pause] Right, then.  Go on with the regalin'. FANSAW    Two men had a third, bleeding from a head wound, but ambulatory - um, up and walking.  They were yelling at the doctor, but I couldn't make out anything.  They didn't seem to be speaking-- SOUND    DOOR OPENS MRS. DOC    Here you go.  Been reducing for three days - that'll put some strength back into you. LEM    Smells right fine.  But that's an awful small cup, ma'am, if you don't mind me sayin, for a pow'rful hunger like I got. MRS. DOC    [tsks] First we see if you can keep it down, Mister... [uncertain] oh.... LEM    Roberts. MRS. DOC    Roberts. Of course. I'm such a scatterbrain. LEM    Cain't take offense til we're properly introduced, nohow, ma'am.  MRS. DOC    You're too kind.  DOC    [calling, off] Irene?  Missus? MRS. DOC    Ah, looks like the doctor's got everything handled.  FANSHAW    The gunshots were all on the doctor's side, I might add. MRS. DOC    [up, sweetly] I'm in the back bedroom!  [back to Lem] Now you sip a bit, if it's not yet too hot. LEM    [sips] Mm.  A mite.  But I can use some warming. SOUND    FOOTSTEPS COME IN DOC    Ah!  Well, this is just the sort of good news I needed.  [to wife] I've been having more trouble with those fellows. MRS. DOC    They don't mean no harm! DOC    To us, no.  To each other, though...! LEM    What's this trouble yer havin', doc? DOC    Nothing you need worry on.  Not yet, leastways. LEM    But I can-- DOC    Tomorrow.  If you're still improving, I'll tell you everything over breakfast.  For now, you need yer rest. LEM    Can we speak, man to man, sir? MRS. DOC    Goodness, I think I'd best go and check on the biscuits. DOC    You do that. SOUND    SHE LEAVES, DOOR SHUTS DOC    She does make some fair biscuits.  [teasing] And she doesn't listen in. FANSHAW    Should I leave? LEM    No.  [smooth] I reckon a doctor's wife should oughtta be used to checking on her biscuits. DOC    [laughs]  You seem to be doing pretty well, for a man shot and come through fever.  That's excellent.  You keep on with that broth, though.  Ain't out of the woods jest yet. LEM    It's the fever I wanna ask about.  Your good wife let slip that I was a mite... FANSHAW    Garralous? LEM    hmph.  ...rambly? DOC    You kept going on about hearing folks talking to you, even in an empty room.  LEM    "Folks."  Ah. DOC    Funny thing is, you even named them from time to time, and I swear not a one of them was someone who coulda been there. LEM    [careful] Whyzzat? DOC    The one or two I recognized your naming of - well, they're ... "passed on". LEM    I - I musta heard the names somewhere. DOC    Can I speak frankly with you, sir?  And you let me know if this is the least bit upsetting to your digestion, you hear? LEM    Ayup. DOC    Well, then.  I'm purt near sure I know why you were calling out to dead folks. LEM    You...do? DOC    Seen it before - more'n once, even. FANSHAW    Really? DOC    You ain't alone, son.  LEM    [unsure] I'm... not? DOC    Many's the fellow standing at death's door - and you were right close there for a while - that hears spirits try and call him through. LEM    Ahhh. FANSHAW    Really, they were being rather annoying. LEM    [slight snort] Did I ... say anything that might be important? DOC    I didn't hear, but I can ask my wife.  She sat in the wagon with you when we made the trip - she told you we'd moved you? LEM    She mentioned that you didn't feel right leaving me behind. DOC    The trip seems to have done you good, too.  Fever broke while we were on route.  Quieted you right down. FANSHAW    And there are less spirits here than in town.  At least not around the house.  None to harass you. LEM    And where are we now, then? DOC    I should really call a halt to all this inquiry, and let you sleep. LEM    I promise I won't ask one more thing, if'n you'll kindly tell me where I am. DOC    We're ten miles and a county line away from where we were.  Near the town of Silt Creek.  LEM    Miners? DOC    [smiling] Now now, you promised no more questions.  Can you finish the last of that? LEM    [slurps the broth down] DOC    Good.  If you're still awake in an hour, I'll see that you get some more.  But do try and sleep. SOUND    LEAVES THE ROOM FANSHAW    They seem a nice couple. LEM    Tell me more about what was going on out there. FANSHAW    Lem, You're hardly in any condition-- LEM    I'm gonna be gettin enough coddlin from the likes of them.  Stop actin like an old woman and-- FANSHAW    Very well.  When I went out there, the three men were standing on the road leading up to the house.  The doctor had a shotgun aimed at them.  They were saying something, but I couldn't make it out-- LEM    Were they strapped? FANSHAW    I saw no guns, but they-- SOUND    TAP, SCRATCH AT THE WINDOW FANSHAW    I'll see.  [pause] I'm not certain, but I think it's one of them! LEM    [hushed] How many out there? [pikey's drunk] PIKEY    [drunken chortle] FANSHAW    That's a relief - of a sort.  Rather than a dead swede, I find a party of my own countrymen - of a sort - encroaching on an already sticky situation.  Bloody hell.  [sigh] I'd best relay this. FADE DOC    I can't do him any good without my bag.  [louder, and gesturing] Bag! OLY    [thinking] Bag.  Ja.  Mrs. Doc    Maybe they understand needle and thread.  Show them. FANSHAW    Lem, just listen.  I've not found Nels, but felt I had to come back and inform you that there are men approaching in a sort of ambush formation outside. LEM    Hmm? FANSHAW    Not more of the Swedes - I suspect these are the fellows who the alteraction is with - or against.  At any rate, they speak English - of a sort - so they won't be so hard to deal with, assuming that they don't simply stage an attack and kill everyone. LEM    Cheery. FANSHAW    And my apologies for not thinking of this before-- LEM    [impatient sigh] FANSHAW    But I did see where the doctor placed your guns and other belongings - they are in the chest at the foot of the bed you awoke in. LEM    Hmph. DOC    [slowly and loudly] You - look through my bag!  You see?  Noooo weapons.  Give bag, let me help your friend. LEM    [quickly] Doc, I think I hear some men outside. LEM    That last word I'd say they did. Mrs. Doc    They're watching you real close.  They might be getting some of this. At least some of our words are kind of similar.  "Help", for instance. OLY    [Help?  Help what?] [Hjalp?  Hjalp vad?] MRS. DOC    It's almost like he understood me. LEM    I wouldn't go thinkin' these fellers is fools.  They don't even seem to mind us talkin, now that the doc's on with his  business. DOC    You think they'll leave now? LEM    So this feller you were talkin about - the one who had some English - do I take it he's deceased? DOC    [agreeing] Mm-hm.  Hatchet flew off the handle, caught him in the side of the head.  It weren't quick, and it weren't pretty, and there weren't a durn thing I coulda done. LEM    So long as they're leavin us to talk amonst ourselves, doc, you were sayin there's some sort of dustup in this here valley? DOC    These fellers - loggers, they are - have some issue with the miners down at the other end of the valley.  They been getting along just fine for a donkey's years, and all of a sudden I ride in this trip to find them at odds and whaling on each other every chance they get. MRS. DOC    Perhaps it is merely a misundertanding?  With Ne- [catches herself] With their one translator passed on, could this all be a terrible mistake? LEM    Might could be.  These miners, they speak English?  Not chineee or sumpin? DOC    English they are, but kind of funny til you get used to it.   LEM    Then I think they's the ones a-creepin up on the house.  I heered just a snatch of voices a while back, and it certain sure weren't Swedes. MRS. DOC    What do we do? LEM    I doubt me you're in any danger, missus, any more than you would be from these fellers. Them out there probably want the doc's help too. MRS. DOC    Even after he sent everyone packing this afternoon? LEM    Even more so.  But they's like to be some fightin once you get'em all in one place. MRS. DOC    Oh no! LEM    [muttered to self] All I'm watchin is a passel o' people payin no mind to the ailin' feller in the corner.  [chuckles]  It's a wonder how often it helps to seem a mite more poorly than y'really are.      FADE 3_angel FANSHAW    Ezra, you and I need to have a long talk, but that will have to wait.  There's some people in danger, and we are the only ones who can help them. When I hear coaches and consultants talk about partnering, my ears perk up. Not because I'm a big believer in partnerships (as you're about to see).  It's because I'm listening for the real reasons they want a partner. Most of the time I hear things like: We would have a lot of fun building something together We have complementary skill sets We have similar audiences Then in podcasting, there's this one, We want to start a podcast together, so we need a way to monetize it. And there's nothing wrong with any of those impulses. I started my first podcast with a partner, and we weren't sure how we would monetize it.  Now it makes us 6 figures a year.  However, partnerships are tough to sustain over the long run. It's really hard for two partners to put in the same amount of effort, energy and focus into a project for years and years. At some point, one partner will feel like they're putting in more than the other partner.  Sometimes even both partners feel this way.  That's why in partnerships like law firms, profit goes into a pie and the pie gets split along the lines of seniority or billable hours.  Dividing the pie “fairly” is really hard - even for firms who have decades of experience. In one of my favorite books of all time, Managing the Professional Service Firm, consulting legend David Maister devotes 50 pages of the book to partnership issues. It's all the nitty gritty stuff people don't think about until they're already in a partnership, like… Partner performance counseling (year end appraisals, self-evaluations & feedback) Partner compensation (billable hours, seniority, rainmaker vs. operations activities) Strategic decision making, goal setting and aligning incentives with strategy Partner relationships (partner archetypes, managing partners, division of powers) In other words, making a partnership work is complicated. In fact, Maister said that it was fairly common for a firm to bring him in for consulting, and the result was one or more partners leaving. One of my clients says having a business partner is like getting married (except you don't get to make out with them). So there's a lot of potential for friction. So here are 3 questions to help you make good decisions on partnerships… 1. Do I really have to give up equity to build this business? Look for ways to hire people, and where you can't hire a skillset, create joint ventures, revshare or commission agreements with pre-agreed caps, all in writing. 2. Could I pay for the skills and expertise instead of partnering up? Partners are permanent, so make sure their skills are permanently needed.  Chances are, you only need a certain skill set for a short time.  Think about Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. One was a visionary marketing genius, the other was the tech genius who actually made stuff work in real life. They needed each other. But even the tech genius was a skill that could be hired out. Steve Wozniak was crucial in the early days, but it was Jobs' drive and vision that made Apple a trillion-dollar company.  3. Could I create a sense of mission and camaraderie within my team, instead of with partners? Entrepreneurship is lonely. Part of the draw of partnership is the sense of community and shared mission. The good news is, you can still have that without giving up equity. Look for ways to create that sense of community and shared mission by building a team of contractors or employees. Get them fired up about your mission and their role in creating a new future for themselves and others.  Everything that is truly valuable to others takes energy, effort and focus to succeed.  In some cases, partnership can be greater than the sum of its parts and produce amazing things with less effort. Yet I've noticed that a major allure of partnership is the assumption that it will take less effort, energy and focus to succeed. And that's a dangerous...

We go through a brief explanation of how the staff has progressed down through the ages to modern times. The name "quarterstaff" is first attested in the mid-16th century. George Silver, an English Gentleman, and Maister of the English martial arts who wrote two books (1599, 1605) including lengthy sections on staff fighting uses the term "short staff" Joseph Swetnam, writing in 1615, distinguishes between the "quarterstaff" of 7 or 8 feet (2.1 or 2.4 m) in length and the "long staff" of 12 feet (3.7 m).[3]

Too focus can be too much cost-focus.” – Ann Sophie De Meester  “I don't think you should be scared to reach out to an advisor earlier rather than later and assume that you know it's going to cost you so much. There's not too much harm in reaching out to someone in the first place to give you a very high level of feedback.” – Art Dicker  “For any advisors out there listening to this, oftentimes professionals like us come across to new clients and talk about how great we are with all the famous cases we've done and so forth, but actually, really what the client wants to know is that ‘You're listening to me and you're understanding my problem, and you are taking the time to give me something that I can use, and you're not just giving me a cookie cutter answer.'” – Art Dicker    People / Resources Mentioned:  The Trusted Advisor by David H. https://youtu.be/E-CTfefAIqM Steve Preda discusses three types of professional service firms in terms of their organizational structures, pricing structures, and overhead. He then describes how these factors interact to produce varying degrees of profitability and scalability.   --- Brains, Gray Hairs and Efficiency One Today I'd like to talk about a concept that I picked up from David Meister who wrote the seminal Managing the Professional Services Firm, actually Managing the Professional Service Firm, many years ago and he introduced this concept to me that keeps my brain spinning and since which in which he speaks about different types of professional services firms. He says that generally they fall into one of three types. There are firms that he refers to as the brains firms, there are gray hair firms, and there are the efficiency firms. So what does it look like and what differentiates these different firms? So the brain firms are the ones that have a handful of highly paid experts. These are really cutting edge people with cutting edge knowledge of their business, and they essentially selling themselves. They're selling their knowledge, they're selling their consulting, and they charge by the hour. Typically, these people will have premium prices. So think about maybe a criminal attorney who is top-notch at saving mafiosi, or think about a doctor who is at the top of their profession, or think about maybe an accountant who is specialized in vintage cars or something that is really unique, maybe venture capital, something that is unique and they have a special knowledge of, or maybe taxation, maybe it's about offshore taxation, whatever it is. So these are the brain firms. Now a brain firm, what it looks like, typical brain firms maybe have two or three partners, maybe a little bit more, and then just a couple of secretaries, or maybe a paralegal, just to serve and do some research for them, but essentially they come to the office, they sell their hours, and they go home, and they make a very high margin on their services because the overhead is very light. So that's the brains firm. The second type of firm is what Maister calls the gray hairs firm. So think here about maybe a family law firm or maybe a corporate run of the mill corporate law firm that serves small to medium sized businesses and these people would come to the law firm and what they expect? They don't expect cutting edge advice. What they want is someone who knows their stuff, who's not going to screw up the case, who will give them a pat on the back, basically make them comfortable and reassure them that they are in good hands, everything's going to be okay and they're not going to lose their livelihood, they're not going to have a bad divorce that's going to be hunted down by the IRS. So that's the service that they're looking for. They want the gray-haired professional with lots of experience, who will personally hold their hand and make sure that they are okay. In professional services, there are brain firms with cutting-edge expertise, gray hair firms for seasoned assurance, and efficiency firms for streamlined success.Share on X Now, what does a firm like this look like? It could be basically, it's top-heavy in terms of senior people, whether they are partners or just paid employees. So in a typical firm, you would have maybe a few partners, maybe three or four partners, and then you have some senior employees who are not partners because they're not good at finding their own clients, but they are great at delivering the service. And then maybe you have some junior staff who will, you know, again, paralegals who will do some digging for them. But essentially, it's either the partners are making their own money and a little bit of a cut on the junior people or they are making their own money and they make a cut on the senior people who are not partners because they cannot kill their own beast. And that's it basically.

Have you ever picked a line at the store only to realize that you chose the longest, most slowly moving line? Have you ever waited forever to receive a shipment and then felt like they owed you an explanation for what could possibly take that long? Have you ever had such a great time laughing and talking in line with other people that you didn't even notice how long you waited?   If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you are a typical customer with common perceptions of waiting in a Customer Experience. Years ago, David Maister wrote a paper called "The Psychology of Waiting Lines." Maister suggests that sometimes waiting in lines can seem longer than it is. Gretchen Rubin, the author of The Happiness Project, wrote an article on Psych Central that details eight reasons that waits seem longer.   This episode of The Intuitive Customer explores the psychology of waiting and what you can do to mitigate it for customers. We address Rubin's eight reasons and share what you can do about them to promote customer-driven growth.

For this week's episode, we were joined by a very special guest -- Vin Gaeta, IMPACT's Creative Director -- for deep dive into something we’ve touched upon before in previous episodes. (Specifically, Episode #40 - When Creative Projects Go Off the Rails.) The idea of "speaking creative" to non-creatives. Or, more simply, the art giving and receiving feedback on creative projects, to and from stakeholders (whether they're clients or other internal colleagues) who may not necessarily know how to clearly articulate why they do -- or don't -- like something, or they want something to change. Because having the ability to bridge these communication barriers is probably one of the most important skills marketing creative professionals can possess, we spent this episode discussing our experiences, as well as what you should (and shouldn’t) do to become a master communicator on creative projects.  (And we have the "battle scars" to prove it.) Enjoy! What We Talked About Why does this happen? What kind of friction does this communication gap create in projects? What are the most important points of communication to manage in a creative project timeline? Why is taking the time to explain your process to clients so important? What are the consequences of not fixing it? What are ways we, as marketing creatives, can bridge this communication gap when working clients?  What shouldn't we do? What about those clients who are too afraid to hurt your feelings to give you honest feedback? How can we use these opportunities to identify unhealthy client-agency relationships? The word "unctuous."  And, finally, are you #TeamCheese or #TeamSun? Resources We Discussed Book: The Trusted Advisor by David H. Maximize Your Influence

On this episode Kurt discusses the blunder and ninja of the day, and the psychology of waiting and whether or not is a good or bad thing and if it affects your ability to persuade. Atmosphere can also include the tension in the air. Is there a rush, or are customers relaxed? What type of climate are you trying to create? Do you want a quick, fast decision, or do you want your customers to feel comfortable enough to stay for a while? An interesting study on what happens when you create an atmosphere of being rushed can be seen in the following example: Princeton University psychologists John Darley and Daniel Batson wanted to see how students would respond if they were in a situation replicating the biblical account of the Good Samaritan.  As the story goes, a band of thieves beat, robbed, and left a man traveling alone by the roadside to die. A devout priest and a reputable Levite passed by.  Neither of the men stopped to help the dying man. Finally, a Samaritan, stopped to help him. The Samaritan bound up his wounds, took him to an inn, and even paid the innkeeper to care for him until he returned. Darley and Batson asked seminarians on a one-on-one basis to prepare and present a short speech on an assigned biblical topic. The test was set up so that on their way to the location where they would deliver their speech, each student would cross a man slumped over, coughing and groaning. Which students would actually stop and help? Before preparing their speeches, the students filled out a questionnaire asking why they had chosen to study theology. Then a variety of speech topics were assigned, including the story of the Good Samaritan. As the students were leaving to deliver their speeches, some were told, "You'd better hurry. They were expecting you about three minutes ago." Others were told, "They won't be ready for a few minutes, but you may as well head over now." Now, most people would assume that seminarians stating on their questionnaires that they had chosen to study theology so they could help people and who were then assigned to speak on the Good Samaritan would be the ones most likely to stop and help the ailing man on their way. Interestingly, neither of those two factors seemed to make much of a difference. In fact, Darley and Batson stated, "Indeed, on several occasions, a seminary student going to give his talk on the parable of the Good Samaritan literally stepped over the victim as he hurried on his way." The element that seemed to be most influential was whether or not the student was rushed. Of the students who were told they were already a little late, only 10 percent stopped to help. Of the students who were told they had a little bit more time, 63 percent stopped to help. We can learn from this example that we can create atmospheres where people are so involved that they ignore other factors they normally would not ignore.  On the flip side, if participants are too relaxed than they become difficult to persuade.
