We have plans for ourselves. But sometimes the universe has a different plan for us. Sometimes we think what we want is the right thing, but when it doesn't happen…we get disappointed. I used to get mad when I'm disappointed. Especially because I almost always get what I want (not from a spoiled child perspective). I'm usually in alignment with what the universe wants for me. And when that doesn't happen, I start asking questions like, “Why do I have this desire?” James Wedmore says this a lot: “You either get the result you want or the lesson you need.” If life has given you a desire and an expectation, and then that expectation isn't met for whatever reason, rather than disappointment, our job is to look at it and say, “What's the lesson here?” The quality of your life is determined by the quality of your questions. This is how I learned to sit and try to let go when disappointment comes. We often don't realize this, but we have a bully inside our heads. It's important to pay attention to how we're telling ourselves stories, what those stories actually mean, and whether they're valid. A quick example: If I tell myself that someone hates me because I'm wearing scrubs, then we're going to have tension because this is the story that I've told myself, regardless of whether it's true. Mindset really comes down to the story we are telling ourselves more than anything else. And a lot of times, the stories that we believe came from what we learned when we were children. For me, it's the memory of my mother saying that my uncles were rich because they were doctors. At that moment, my little five-year-old brain said, “I have to be a doctor or I won't be able to make money.” That decision and belief served me. My subconscious mind took me from being a music major, to taking one class in Trigonometry and high scoring that class, to going into science to one of the most difficult colleges in the country called, Harvey Mudd, to medical school. We are being programmed from such a young age, and if we don't pay attention to how we're speaking to ourselves and what beliefs are driving our current actions… We get stuck in a box. Our beliefs create our future. And we need to step out of the box to create a life we love. There are truths I didn't think I would ever say. One of them is we're all on a spiritual path, whether we want to believe it or not. Even the most ardent atheist is on their own spiritual path. When I was in high school, I was like a crazy Jesus freak. Then I kind of slipped away from it because the church didn't treat me well. But it was when I saw that there's always availability for something bigger that I started to see the world that we live in is something that we've created. And we have the ability and the opportunity to change everything just based on how we see things. Whether you call it God, energy or the universe… We only see the world through the filter of the box that we are in, and not everybody understands that the magic happens outside of it. Some of us love to be philosophical and keep everything in our head. But what we are missing is application. We need integration, embodiment, and empowerment. And the best spiritual practice is how you are living your life. Abuse is a lot more common than a lot of us would admit. It's not just physical. It's more than that and it cuts through to someone's core. And while it may not be directly related to menopause, some of us may be in abusive relationships. Understanding more about how to handle, get out of and heal from an abusive relationship is so important. Nobody deserves to be abused physically, verbally or emotionally. In this episode of The Best of The Menopause Movement Podcast, I'm with Miki Sturges where we talk about the cycle of shame, angel syndrome PLUS: The cycle of abuse How we live in a patriarchy and how that affects abuse Breaking the cycle Miki is a life coach and an expert in the field of resilience and survival from domestic abuse. She established a company called the Rise Up, Women Movement, where she aims to empower, encourage, and inspire women in conquering challenges from abuse. One out of every four women in the United States experiences domestic violence in their lifetime. The most crucial step in getting away from this trauma is contacting a domestic abuse hotline. If you need immediate assistance for domestic abuse, call 911, or you may call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233). They will provide help by assisting with crisis intervention and initial safety planning. Have you ever been triggered? A few years ago, this term used to be new to me. There were many instances where I was triggered and reacted inappropriately, because one of the ways that I managed my own trauma was not to trust anyone and to always push people away. If I felt threatened at all I would lash out. This almost cost me my job when I was a resident, because I didn't know how to interact with people. Thankfully I got to a place where I had the luxury to do some introspection, where a lot of women may not have that because a lot of us are still in survival mode even into midlife. This is why having a safety net relationship is important. During midlife, we often rethink our relationships. This phase also calls for the rediscovery of self. At 95, your brain should be just as sharp as 24. This is according to Dr. Pamela Wartian Smith, a diplomate of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Physicians. Anxiety is a thought that when unobserved, can get us into a pattern that is filled with fear and worry. And when we're filled with fear and worry, we're not able to attract abundance to our lives. How we talk to ourselves is really important because we can perpetuate our anxiety by continuing to say the same things. Mothers understand unconditional love, and one of the techniques that I like to give to women that I'm coaching when it comes to anxiety is to pay attention to how you talk to yourself. I never realized that I had a form of anxiety back when I was just getting started in my surgical practice. And every time, it's because of the responsibility of taking out a gallbladder. Here's a quick science talk: There are two structures that have to be cut in order to remove the gallbladder—the cystic artery and the cystic duct. And if you do it wrong, it could be devastating for the patient. I'm a good surgeon, I know my anatomy, but every single time I do it, this feeling of dread will just come up, and it wasn't until several years later when I looked back that I recognized that as anxiety. This is why it's important for me to remember that everything comes down to belief. I heard this first from Jack Canfield: “Fear is just false events, appearing real.” We only have a couple of fears like the fear of falling and the fear of loud noises. Other than that, everything else is manufactured because of beliefs that we created as we grew up, like failure. The mindset of being able to fail forward is a foreign concept to a surgeon. And when I started the Menopause Movement, I really had to work hard to undo all those beliefs around failure because you don't start a business without failing it forward. You've got to test things, you're going to fail and then you have to tweak things. But when you think about how we live inside of a box, and how our growth is outside of it, as we step out, the cycle continues. Failing forward is the way to go. Anxiety is a very disruptive condition and can increase during menopause, but there's a way to overcome it and I talk more about that in today's episode of The Best of The Menopause Movement Podcast with Vikki Yaffe. I watched this Russian science fiction where robots looked like humans, and everytime something happened, these humans were pouring a drink and smoking. When I think about the commercials in the 50s, I remember seeing eating, drinking, and pushing down emotions. We're almost conditioned with the way the media portrays stress—that when you feel a certain way, the thing to do is to reach for a substance. It's not to go out for a walk and control ourselves or to get some personal mastery. I usually share this story of how certain types of food remind me of my parents. Whenever I eat potato chips, I think about my dad. I have a really strong memory of him slicing potatoes, putting salt on them, and eating them raw. With my mom it's her in one of those square pants while she made brownies, and me eating the corners. When I choose to eat potato chips, I always have to step back and be the observer and say, “Okay, well, what is this? Am I missing my dad who passed away in 2017 or am I really enjoying the crunch?” I always want to be cognizant of that, because of the ripple effect. Because when we identify the emotions associated with whatever we do, we get to talk about it, understand where it came from, and see how it affects our personal mastery and relationships. I remember not too long ago, I was at a conference and it said something that went home for me. It went along the lines of, “Are you going to let a four-year-old run your life?” This isn't parenting 101, but it can be. You see, we all learn something from our childhood experiences—including negative ones that led to traumas. The thing is, if we don't deal with them, we can be 30, 40, 50, 60 years old and full of wisdom, but still not know why we get triggered by what other people do or say to us. Have you ever been triggered? I thought about a couple of experiences I had when I was pretty early in my surgical career and had some not so pleasant interactions with colleagues who were questioning me. And because I came from a patriarchal home where my opinion never mattered, I was always really defensive when my colleagues would challenge me. At that time, I didn't see it as a challenge. I saw it as a conflict that reminded me of how people in my family interacted. So I would lash out and get triggered. “Are you going to be a four-year-old for the rest of your life?” the leader of that conference asked. I always say that change starts with awareness. And to be free from our subconscious programming, we need to be present so we can recognize the past that's coming in, name it, and put it together in a different way. When I was in surgical residency we used to say, “You eat when you can; you sleep when you can.” I picked up this habit where I would just shovel food into my mouth as fast as I could, because we're supposed to eat on the fly. I'm glad I don't have to do that anymore. But here's something you might like to know: Obesity is a hormonal disease. And for women in menopause, putting on a bunch of extra weight can turn into a negative spiral. If you're still unsure where I'm getting at, I'm saying it's not your fault if you can't shift the weight even if you've tried so many times. But there are steps for you to take so you can manage hormonal weight gain in menopause. In today's episode of The Best of The Menopause Movement Podcast, I'm with Dr. Avishkar Sabharwal who is a diplomat of the American Board of Obesity Medicine, and the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine. His experience in India made him profoundly interested in the effects of nutrition on health and disease. When I did a TV show a few years ago, there was a French woman who had moved from France to Santa Barbara. She talked about how she leaked all the time, and she couldn't run because she would just pee her pants. And I thought, “There's got to be a way for her to get help.” This reminds me of women suffering in silence and the fact that doctors don't understand female anatomy. To put on my empathy hat, as a surgeon, it's true that doctors don't get any education in menopause at all (not even in nutrition). At least that's what's happening in America. I didn't get any training in anatomy, (vaginal anatomy was not stressed as much as the male anatomy) and the pelvic floor. There was also no discussion about the trauma of childbirth. So here's a quick patriarchy talk: Penis is a word that we consider to be… well just penis. But when it comes to vagina, this face pops up in my brain: And I have to unlearn that along with all the things that came from my childhood, because as a woman helping women live their best lives, I want to say that there is always hope… Even if as young girls, we were never taught that the knight in shining armor on the white horse is really YOU. With the whole Cinderella complex and the media telling us that healing is outside of ourselves, 30 million women are suffering from chronic pelvic pain, with debilitating symptoms like urine leaking, painful sex, prolapse, and weak or non-existent orgasms. And almost nobody ever wants to talk about it. But Isa Herrera and I will. Once a year, I give myself the permission to just have whatever. I'm not perfect. I'm pretty good at my diet most days of the year, but once in a while, I'll go off the rails. “I am” is a very powerful statement. It's the statement of identity and it's so much more than a story. I used to say I hate running, until I actually did it. I'm not gonna say it's always easy. On some days, it really sucks because the runs are difficult. But the body can do a lot more than we think. I had this big epiphany about weight loss because weight loss is hard. And it's hard for a number of reasons. I think one of the reasons it's hard is because we have to change things and change behaviors (that's hard too). I didn't start running until menopause (I mean, I ran when I was 18 and then when I was in high school just for fun, then I had open heart surgery, and I never went back to it). Back in 2015, we filmed a TV show, and we went to Majorca so I had to train to go up a mountain. I rode my bike up this mountain, trained with a trainer, and then I realized that I could do a lot more with this body and I was probably 30 or 40 pounds heavier than I am now when we filmed that. Now I'm 56 years old, and I was able to do that because of persistent focused effort. And what I tell the women who joined my programs, especially in the Meno-Mastery Academy, is that when you want to get started with something, it's really about finding something that's impossible to fail at. And then just continuing. Because those little wins stack. I talk more about that in today's episode with national board certified clinical health and wellness coach, Emily Marquis. With her combined coaching and corporate HR background, Emily also worked with clinics and fellow practitioners to create a village for clients to best support their well-being. Because of the decline of hormones, we need to have stronger pelvic floors, so that we're not suffering from vaginal dryness. In menopause, we lose bone density (so all these things are happening simultaneously). To find relief, some women want that magical pill or the surgery...that we forget that the answers are already within us and we have to do the work. But if after childbirth, you find that you need to take steps to heal your pelvic floor because of pain, leaking, pressure or discomfort “down there…” you don't have to be stuck in not knowing what to do to care for your sacred anatomy. When is the best time to get started? I'd say, “Anytime.” There's not ever a time when you're too late. And retirement doesn't have to end your passion... In fact, it can give you the freedom to do another great thing.
