Professional surfer, business owner and WSL commentator, Strider Wasilewski tells all in this episode of Cold Beer Surf Club. Strider sits down with Conner Coffin at WSL HQ and kicks off the conversation with a jaw-dropping story about an old photo of a shark they encountered during a Bali trip, courtesy of Marty Hoffman. He takes us through the harrowing experience of surviving a shark attack at Gordo Bank alongside legends like Marty, Peter McGonagle, and Terence McNulty. From recounting the adrenaline-pumping moments during the infamous Mick Fanning incident at Jeffreys Bay to the transformative experience of swimming with sharks in the Maldives, Strider shares his most gripping encounters with these ocean giants. Strider also reflects on his roots in the iconic Dogtown scene, growing up alongside skate legends Tony Alva and Jay Adams, and the pivotal moments that shaped his surfing journey—from epic trips to the North Shore to gracing the cover of SURFER Magazine. He dives into his time with Quiksilver, unforgettable moments flying on a private jet with Kelly Slater, and the excitement of signing Dane Reynolds and securing Volcom's legendary Pipe House. As Strider and Conner discuss the evolution of surfing culture from the "surf all day, party all night" scene to the current era of incredible professionalism and progression, Strider shares what continues to fuel his passion as a surfer and a commentator. He divulges his ventures with Shade Sunscreen, supporting talents like Griffin and Crosby Colapinto, and his journey of writing a book. New episodes drop every month. Did you know that there's an enclave of Bawdy SuperFans in Nashville, Tennessee? This episode is a Behind-The-Scenes story, the story behind the stories, if you will. For those who love the Dixie Ramble, get ready for a Puppet and Clown and Music Video filled birthday party (spoiler alert: wemay have broken the Birthday curse). Plus, the story of 2 talented Nashville musicians who were inspired to write sex-positive songs after listening to Every.Single.Episode of the Bawdy Storytelling podcast. Nashville was definitely a highlight of my recent Cross Country to East Coast Tour, and finally, you too can hear a custom song written just for Bawdy. #ILoveCustomSongs   Song: ‘Bawdy, if you're feelin' Naughty' (Wet Bread)   About our Songwriters:   Melody Walker and Lizzy Ross are both celebrated songwriters in the indie folk and Americana scene who decided they had far hornier songs to write than their previous mainstream projects would allow for. They had spent so many years not wanting to seem like “those kind of bisexuals”: you know, the lusty, insatiable, wanton kind of women who would start a band just to advertise their goods to a captive audience of other certified sluts and poly queerdos. But when Melody turned Lizzy onto her favorite podcast Bawdy Storytelling and then they found out Dixie was coming to Nashville, it was all over for their good reputation. They decided to risk it all to debut their new duo WET BREAD.    Learn more about BERTHA (Melody Walker's Grateful Drag cover band) at https://www.gratefuldrag.com/ Or https://www.melodywalker.com/bertha   Instagram: Follow Melody Walker at https://www.instagram.com/melodywritessongs   And Lizzie Ross is at https://www.instagram.com/lizzyross/   Episode links:   Bawdy is coming to Portland, Oregon!   PORTLAND, OREGON:  Bawdy Storytelling is coming to Portland for a 2 show night!  Tickets now available for Friday, June 21st, and they're selling fast. Dixie is back, and so is the Podcast! In this episode: You've been told ‘Don't do Bondage when you're High', but have you ever heard a true story that illustrated that point? Well, Science tells us that we learn best from a story, so this week, we have an informative ‘Don't Try This at Home' story for you. Punk Rock Leather Daddy Al Rahm Lujan was a mere 20 years old and fresh out of the Navy, and just beginning to explore his dominant nature. Young and unskilled at bondage (but eager to play), Al meets a submissive man with a unique fetish for tasseled loafers and business suits, so he picks up a pair of dress shoes at Kmart and they take their party to a secret lair. Al has his victim on a St Andrews cross and is using whips, floggers, nipple clamps and more on him - when the evening takes an unexpected turn. The submissive turns blue, the EMTs, Firefighters and Police are called, and their dangerous experience becomes a life lesson. Will Al get arrested for being Drunk and Kinky? Listen to discover the consequences of an impulsive (and intoxicated) adventure that helped Al get Sober. #GetSmart   Song: ‘All in the Suit that You Wear' (Stone Temple Pilots)   About our Storyteller:   Al Rahm Lujan is a Bay Area Renaissance Daddy. His writing has appeared in numerous anthologies and publications, including Best American Erotica and Drummer Magazine. His visual art has been shown throughout the Bay Area, including Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and the Oakland Museum. Kevin Burt's soul-inspired performances are unique, which consistently gets him compared to a range of artists like Bill Withers and Aaron Neville, with the ability to build an audience rapport that has been compared to B.B. King. Burt is a musician (vocals, harmonica, and guitar) whose smooth, warm vocal presentation and humor audiences of all ages seem to enjoy. Two of Kevin's primary influences are Bill Withers and Aaron Neville and he has the ability to build a great rapport with the audience with his soul-inspired presentation and natural stage presence.Kevin Burt, a distinguished member of the Iowa Blues Hall of Fame, recently released "Thank You, Brother Bill: A Tribute to Bill Withers," out now through Gulf Coast Records. This homage to the legendary Bill Withers showcases Burt's captivating vocals, harmonica, and guitar talents, alongside his band, Big Medicine. The album, available for CD pre-order, was recorded at The Sound Box Recording Studio in Cedar Rapids, IA, with an ensemble featuring Scot Sutherland on bass, Ken Valdez on lead/rhythm guitar, and Eric Douglas on drums/percussion.The track list includes soulful renditions of Withers' classics such as "Ain't No Sunshine" and "Lean On Me," culminating in the poignant original composition, "Thank You Brother Bill," written by Kevin Burt himself. Burt, profoundly influenced by Withers, expresses a deep connection to the stories and songs that have shaped his own narrative. In his own words, "I hope to someday have an impact on someone else's world the way Mr. Withers has had on mine." Experience the resonance of these timeless melodies and stories that transcend generations. Much love to Brother Bill Withers and to all who appreciate the profound journey of music. — Kevin Burthttps://www.kevinburtmusic.net/

This week on the Zen Perry Project we had the pleasure of sitting down with Tristan Shone, the tinkerer mastermind of Author & Punisher. Don't let his San Diego surfer vibes mislead you, Author & Punisher is a juggernaut of the heavy industrial music scene, churning pounding beats and distorted vocals from an arsenal of personally-crafted metal MIDI monstrosities called Drone Machines. Appearing like relics salvaged from a futuristic cyberpunk dystopia, Tristan's fusion of mechanical engineering experience and now 20 years of commitment culminate in his fantastic creation of cathartically heavy sonic landscapes.Kicking off a Midwest & East Coast Tour later this week do NOT miss Author & Punisher live in a city near you; we cannot wait to catch him at Saint Vitus Bar here in NYC on March 3rd. Photo courtesy of Christina Liu - thelonelyeyelid Support the showIntrospective interviews with artistic individuals - an ongoing audiovisual journal of Zen Perry. Have you ever let your tongue finish the dance that your ass began? Podcaster & Sex and Intimacy coach Leah Carey has never believed that great sex was something she deserved, but as she begins to seek out sensual, kinky live events in her local community, she meets a man who makes her feel safe enough to try new things. Together, they set a boundary and WOW, who knew it could be so hot to have someone tell you No when you begged for it? And the time is now: Pitch Dixie your true story for our just announced East Coast Tour dates. Always convinced that she was the problem – not pretty enough, smart enough, or sexually skilled enough - she dreamed of great sex but assumed she would never experience it. At age 43, life threw Leah an opportunity to challenge her old beliefs and finally move her beyond the mythology of the “Good Girl.”   Listen to the Good Girls Talk About Sex podcast and learn more at www.LeahCarey.com   Episode links: Needle Play Acupuncture: Needle Play Acupuncture was made by and for the Kink, Leather, and LGBTQIA+ communities. Roy can look back now and celebrate a career of twists and turns or use the phrase he prefers -- duality.  He succeeds often in his career but simultaneously has "fish out of water" feelings.  He was a first-generation college student who successfully applied for scholarships, yet his mother felt that attending college increased their distance.  He goes to Harvard for graduate school yet experiences the imposter phenomenon of being from Virginia.  After not achieving tenure at Vassar (his first job post-PhD), he lands at St. Mary's College of Maryland -- a good fit for his teaching career, but not a good match for a gay man (the duality).  Roy became a successful textbook author, publishing in adolescent psychology and introductory psychology.

His early aspirations were to become a physician and play as much golf as possible, but both aspirations changed.  He earned his PhD in perception and began his career at Nebraska Wesleyan University, with a series of one-year contracts making just above qualifying for food stamps. He leaves NWU for a 2-year stint at the American Psychological Association, working in Educational Affairs, and it is there where Ben begins to launch projects and make an impact nationally.  He then worked at Texas A&M University for the next 32 years, retiring in 2012.  He taught Introduction to Psychology courses with 300 students for years, but his passion and expertise is the history of psychology.  Ben is a storyteller at heart, so he is well-suited for historical studies, and psychology is clearly the beneficiary.

Rising Brisbane metalcore outfit UNI/VS have remained quiet over the COVID period, resisting the temptation to mass produce music during lockdown, instead focusing their efforts into releasing a series of stand out tracks as the world returns to normalcy rather than saturate an increasingly crowded market.Following their 2020 single Hellhound, UNI/VS readied themselves for an East Coast Tour which was to be followed by their first international show in Sweden before the cruel hand of China stepped in.The band are back, armed with their first new music in almost two years in the form of Saboteur, an intense and aggressive track that aims to teach us that it is okay to not be okay.Bass player Shaq Schmidt joined HEAVY to discuss the track."Musically... we don't necessarily start out trying to write something heavy or something soft,” he measured. “Most of the time it might just start with a bit of a riff idea and the main riff of Saboteur is really how it started and it evolved from there. Probably a big part of what makes it sounds heavy is the lyrical content and Scott's style of vocals. I guess it all really evolved off the main riff in the song."In the full interview Shaq talks about the film clip and how it relates to the song, why it took them two years to follow up Hellhound, future music and its direction, dealing with COVID, future plans and more.

This is Gabriel Rench with your CrossPolitic Daily News Brief for Wednesday, June 10th, 2020. Asymptomatic spread of coronavirus is ‘very rare,' WHO says https://www.cnbc.com/2020/06/08/asymptomatic-coronavirus-patients-arent-spreading-new-infections-who-says.html On Monday June 8th Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, head of WHO's emerging diseases and zoonosis unit, said this at a news briefing from the United Nations agency's Geneva headquarters: “From the data we have, it still seems to be rare that an asymptomatic person actually transmits onward to a secondary individual,” “It's very rare.” But then on Tuesday June 9th she dialed it back and said: “during the live Q&A, she clarified "this is a major unknown." She goes onto say: “"The majority of transmission that we know about is that people who have symptoms transmit the virus to other people through infectious droplets -- but there are a subset of people who don't develop symptoms, and to truly understand how many people don't have symptoms, we don't actually have that answered yet," Van Kerkhove said. "We do know that some people who are asymptomatic, or some people who don't have symptoms, can transmit the virus on," she said. "So what we need to better understand is how many of the people in the population don't have symptoms and separately how many of those individuals go on to transmit to others." Who do we believe? And what day do we believe what they said? This is just getting embarrassing.  Black Business Owners' Ranks Collapse by 41% in U.S. Lockdowns https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/markets/black-business-owners-ranks-collapse-by-41-in-us-lockdowns/ar-BB15cF7B According to MSN:  “The Covid-19 economic shutdown has hurt African American businesses the most among racial and ethnic groups in U.S., with a 41% decline of black owners from February to April, a new study from the National Bureau of Economic Research shows. While the pandemic has hit entrepreneurs across the board, closing some 3.3 million small businesses at least temporarily, the sidelining of 440,000 African Americans was especially severe. Black owners may have fared worse because fewer of them operated in industries deemed “essential” during the pandemic, among other factors, according to the NBER paper. Immigrant business owners also fared poorly, with a 36% drop during the period. “The negative early-stage impacts on minority- and immigrant-owned businesses, if prolonged, may be problematic for broader racial inequality because of the importance of minority businesses for local job creation, economic advancement, and longer-term wealth inequality,” said the report's author, Robert Fairlie of the University of California at Santa Cruz. The findings add to other data showing that the pandemic has broadly hit African Americans harder than other groups, with blacks suffering higher rates of mortality from the coronavirus and greater joblessness. While unemployment among white Americans fell to 12.4% last month, according to data released Friday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the jobless rate for African Americans rose slightly to 16.8%.” For those of us who have been saying the cure is worse than the COVID, we don't even fully know the extent of how bad this cure has been for our lives. The ‘Institutional Racism' Canard https://www.nationalreview.com/2020/06/the-institutional-racism-canard/ “About twice as many white people as black people are killed by police. In fact, in about 75 percent of police shootings, the decedent is not black. Of course, that is not what you would grasp from consuming media... Powerline's Paul Mirengoff fills in that blank: “Blacks commit around 70 percent of black-white interracial homicides.” For this, he draws on FBI crime statistics for 2016. They show that, of 776 black–white homicides, blacks committed 533 and whites 243. Neither of these numbers, by the way, nor their combined total, comes anywhere close to the number of blacks killed by blacks: a staggering 2,570 — the overwhelming majority male.” https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2018/national/police-shootings-2018/ Last years, in 2019, cops killed 17 unarmed blacks, and even that data needs explanation (meaning even though they did not have a gun, one had a knife, some were physical altercations, etc…) Compare this to the reported 22 white men who where killed by the cops while unarmed.  This of course is not to justify police brutality, but if we are going to talk about police brutality, racism, etc… then we need to look at all the data. First, the message you are hearing is that Officer Chauvin is a racist and that is why he killed George Floyed. But where is the evidence for that? What does biblical justice require of the accuser? Proof! You need proof that this police negligence was driven by racism. That would include providing evidence that the other ethnic cops present were also racist. Secondly, the corruption in the police force has been horrific in democratically run cities. Think Baltimore, Chicago, Detroit, LA, Minneapolis, and so forth, which have been dominated by democratic politics for decades. Police corruption, while not neglecting individual responsibility, has been propped up by powerful unions, immunity, and unjust application of laws (basically one law for cops and another law for the citizens).  So, if we are really going to have an honest discussion about police brutality and racism, we need to get all the cards on the table, and bring the light of God's word to bear on those facts. Statically, you are exponentially more likely to be killed by another black person that you would be by a cop. The obvious connecting here is the black community has been devastated by fatherlessness. And Police unions, they shield, protect, and even threaten in order to keep their cops on the streets. They are incentivized away from equitable justice and so laws and systems have been created by the pressure of police unions to protect cops over their citizens. Lastly, politicians who are joining the bandwagon calling to defund the police are feckless. For decades they over saw the expansion of the militarization of the police, and loved every minute of it. And in addition to this, to call for the defunding of the police while they themselves have private security or some sort of government security (like the congressional police, Secret Service, etc…), it is the same play that they want to run on your 2nd amendment rights. You can't have guns, but we can. Our politicians are just like the militarization of the police force. They want one standard for you, while they themselves will not place themselves under that same standard. This is the same thing that happened under the COVIDpanic. You need to stay home in shutdown mode, while politicians were at dining, golfing, traveling, and screwing their mistresses, all in the name of your safety. Jesus has harsh words for this kind of leadership in Matthew 20:25 But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 26 It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, 27and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, 28 even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”    Our political leaders have failed us miserably and this COVIDpanic and FLOYDpanic have been given to us by God, and to be a thinking Christian means we need to see what God is showing us here. Just think about this for a moment. Our mayor on March 25th signed a resolution shutting down non-essential business here in Moscow. These companies, if they continued operating, would be operating illegally and would be fined with the possibility of imprisonment. Think about that. A lawful business could get fined for operating, for making money for their families, their employees, their livelihoods, all the while our mayor was collecting his taxpayer paycheck and going golfing and drinking beer with his buddies at Elks Lodge just north of town. He signed a resolution that did not apply to his paycheck, and he would not place himself under the same conditions he required others to follow under his resolution. Of course the issue here, is we as a people need to repent. When we are oppressed, when the black community cries tears of oppression, when operating a business becomes illegal and you can know longer legally provide for your family, our call is to God. Don't cry out to the state to save you, they have been doing a crappy job for centuries. Cry out to God, humbler yourself before God, and He will act, He will lift His people up.  This is Gabriel Rench with Crosspolitic News. Cycling writer/historian Peter Nye (Hearts of Lions: The History of American Bicycle Racing) joins the podcast this week to help us understand the long and curious backstory behind the 1989 launch of the Tour de Trump - a major world-class cycling event that, for a brief period, aspired to become the American equivalent of the sport's iconic Tour de France. Once the king of sports in the US at the turn of the 20th century (prominent cycling competitions in the early 1900s routinely drew thousands of paying spectators, attracted significant wagering action and stretched across multiple days), bicycle racing fell precipitously from the national sporting spotlight in the decades that followed - until major outdoor stage races backed by progressive sponsors like Celestial Seasonings and Coors rekindled interest during the late 1970s/early 1980s. Buoyed by building enthusiasm for the sport from CBS' increased television coverage of the Tour de France in the US, an unlikely alliance - sports TV host/music composer John Tesh, college basketball analyst/entrepreneur Billy Packer, Olympic sports management executive Mike Plant, and a bombastic, egocentric real estate baron-cum-personal branding nightmare named Donald Trump - conceived an East Coast "Tour de Jersey" in an attempt to compliment and eventually rival the French spectacle. After Packer convinced an already-controversial Trump to lend his name to the enterprise, sizable increases in media attention, rider interest, corporate sponsorship, and prize money were assured - at least until Trump's (first set of) corporate financial woes forced him to bail after only two Tours. Still, the later-renamed Tour Du Pont lasted six more seasons, all the while elevating competitive cycling to a level the US had not seen in decades - and, arguably, hasn't since.

Her unique style owes more to Ella Fitzgerald, Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, James Brown and Amy Winehouse than today’s disposable hit-makers.   This Is Love is the perfect combination of soul, rock, attitude and restraint ? a distinct fusion of R&B and rock, subtly influenced by funk and hip-hop that best complements her longstanding reputation as a “sassy” (Yahoo! Entertainment) soul siren. Equally as impressive and at ease at belting James Brown style over a relentless funk groove as she is gently resting her voice over a tender ballad, Testone’s range of influences and vocal capacity know few limits.

Part 2, which is coming next week, will be songs about places I drove through with Mrs. Toad on our way back to drop the van in Phoenix again. Most of the connections are a little tenuous, honestly, tending to concentrate more on the fact that the song name-checks the town in the title rather than provides a touching insight into real life in that town, but you know, superficial is kind of what we do best here. 01. We discuss what we’re most looking forward to about Half-Blood Prince and what we think may be cut. Small update on the East Coast Tour. Vote on Podcast Alley…or else! Muggle Mail on movie intermissions, cliffhangers and Chapter 10. Interview with Freddie Highmore. Chapter-by-Chapter: Chapters 11 and 12. The hosts draw some excellent comparisons in these chapters to Nazi Germany. The story begins to take on a very dark tone. We analyze the argument between Harry and Remus from both perspectives – sorry Harry, seeing this one from just your point of view doesn’t cut it. One listener writes a very good defense of Lupin. Kreacher and the saucepan: finally some comedy! Jo shows just how good she is in her revelation that Umbridge has the locket. What is up with this plan to infiltrate the Ministry? Micah doesn’t buy it. Snape named Headmaster of Hogwarts – was he there to actually protect the students? Why does Hermione keep nagging Harry to close his mind? It actually helps him! Chicken Soup.
