Hallo Max, die Umfragewerte von Donald Trump sind ziemlich miserabel. Ständig will er das Ruder herumreißen, doch ständig scheitert er. Jüngstes Beispiel war die Wahlkampfveranstaltung in Tulsa, Oklahoma letztes Wochenende. Sie sollte die triumphale Rückkehr des Show-Präsidenten werden. Dann aber war die Halle nur halb voll, und die Welt lachte über den Präsidenten, der eine Million Fans angekündigt hatte. Was ist passiert? Die Karten für die Veranstaltung konnte man nur reservieren. Das sprach sich vor allem unter Jugendlichen in sozialen Medien rum. Zum Beispiel bei TikTok und Snapchat. Tausende haben Tickets reserviert, um dann bewusst nicht hinzugehen. Vor allem Anhänger von koreanischer Pop-Musik, von K-Pop, sollen ganz besonders aktiv gewesen sein. Trump hatte ob des erwarteten Andrangs sogar vor der Veranstaltungshalle noch Großbildschirme aufbauen lassen, um die Zehntausenden Fans unterzubringen, die nicht in die Halle passen, welche 19.000 Leute fasst. Dann aber kamen nur 6200 und draußen blieb alles leer. Dieser Flop wurde groß ausgebreitet in den Medien. Ausgelacht zu werden, ist für Trump ja nun besonders schlimm. Wie hat er reagiert? Angeblich war er so wütend wie kaum jemals zuvor. Die Veranstaltung war von seinem Team extra zur Besänftigung seines Gemüts orchestriert worden. Trump machte danach aber alle möglichen anderen Schuldigen aus: angebliche Gewalttäter, die Demokraten, die Antifa und natürlich die Medien. Am Ende tröstete er sich damit, dass der rechte Fernsehsender Fox News einen neuen Zuschauerrekord erzielt hatte. Es spricht allerdings viel dafür, dass eine Menge Fernsehzuschauer einfach nur sehen wollten, wie sich Trump blamiert. Nun können doch aber nicht nur TikTok-Teenager für die leeren Ränge verantwortlich sein. Haben die Leute nicht auch Angst vor einer Corona-Infektion. Oder locken Trumps Reden einfach niemanden mehr hinterm Ofen hervor? Oklahoma war als Standort ausgewählt worden, weil es ein sehr konservativer Staat ist und hier der Enthusiasmus der Fans am ehesten garantiert werden konnte. Aber ältere Menschen, auch wenn sie Trump-Anhänger sind, machen sich schon Sorgen um ihre eigene Gesundheit. Ich denke, dass etliche von ihnen wegen Corona zuhause blieben. Das Interesse an seinen Reden hat nicht nachgelassen, glaube ich. Vor allem weil diese die erste seit Monaten war. Speziell im Süden der USA, also auch in Oklahoma, steigen die Corona-Fallzahlen wieder. Im Gegensatz zur ersten Welle, als es eher den Nordosten traf, sind nun eher Staaten betroffen, die von republikanischen Gouverneuren regiert werden. Rächt sich jetzt der zu frühe Ausstieg aus dem Lockdown, den Trump vorangetrieben hat und den diese Gouverneure Trump zuliebe durchsetzten? In der Tat steigen die Zahlen in der Hälfte aller Bundesstaaten, vor allem im ländlichen Raum. Der frühe Ausstieg ist wahrscheinlich der wesentliche Grund dafür. Wir machen uns gerade persönlich große Sorgen, weil unser Sohn Ende August wieder anfangen soll, in Texas an der Universität in Houston zu studieren. Das ist die viertgrößte Stadt der USA, und die Zahlen steigen dort seit zwei Wochen massiv an. Texas hat einen republikanischen Gouverneur, Houston aber einen demokratischen Bürgermeister. Man kann den Anstieg also nicht nur den Republikanern zuschieben. Langsam werden die Beatmungsgeräte knapp. Houston steht vor einer Gesundheitskatastrophe. Wir sind wirklich fassungslos momentan. Ich hoffe sehr, dass dein Sohn gesund bleibt. Danke. Lass uns dennoch zu den Anhängern von Trump zurückkehren. Zuletzt hat der Oberste Gerichtshof der USA die Diskriminierung von LGBTQ-Menschen für verfassungswidrig erklärt. Auch der von Trump nominierte Richter Neil Gorsuch war dieser Meinung. Bröckelt dadurch die Basis von Trump, weil sie enttäuscht ist vom eigenen Kandidaten? Ja, sie ist enttäuscht. Aber deswegen wird sie nicht bröckeln. Viele dieser super konservativen Evangelikalen sind fassungslos, das ausgerechnet Gorsuch dieses Diskriminierungsverbot unterstützt hat. Er war eigentlich das Geschenk von Trump an die Evangelikalen und sollte die bibelfesten Entscheidungen treffen. Dennoch wird die Fassungslosigkeit der Evangelikalen nur von kurzer Dauer sein. Sie sind ja weiterhin politisiert und werden sich nicht ins Privatleben zurückziehen. Aus ihrer Sicht ist Trump nach wie vor das geeignetste Vehikel um die USA nach ihren Vorstellungen umzumodeln. Manche meinen sogar, er wäre von Gott gesandt. Wenn die Basis nicht bröckelt, warum steht Trump in den Umfragen dann so schlecht da? Die Evangelikalen machen ungefähr ein Drittel von Trumps Wählerschaft aus. Da bleiben also noch zwei Drittel, die 2016 für Trump stimmten. In diesem Lager ist ein Bröckeln zu beobachten. Das sind nicht alles Trumpisten, sondern viele moderate Republikaner, die 2016 einfach Hillary Clinton nicht mochten, jetzt aber weniger Probleme mit Joe Biden haben. Außerdem zeigt Trump in der Wirtschafts- und Gesundheitskrise keine Führungsqualitäten. Das schadet ihm. Wenn es die Wahlkampfauftritte des Spitzenkandidaten nicht schaffen, wie wollen die Republikaner dann den Rückstand aufholen? Um die Macht zu erhalten, arbeiten sie schon seit Jahren mit Tricks. Momentan versuchen sie, potentielle Wähler von Biden und den Demokraten vom Gang an die Urne abzuhalten. Sie schließen in deren Hochburgen viele Wahllokale und sorgen für unglaublich lange Warteschlangen. Oder sie säubern vorher die Wählerlisten. Das Neuste ist, dass Trump vor Wahlbetrug bei der Briefwahl warnt, die wegen Corona derzeit sehr beliebt ist. Trump weckt bei seinen Anhängern Misstrauen gegenüber den Wahlergebnissen. Das ist brandgefährlich, wenn diese dann nicht eindeutig zugunsten von Biden und den Demokraten ausfallen. Chris Grady didn’t know much about the webcomic world when he launched Lunarbaboon, a semi-autobiographical comic about family and parenthood. But shortly after launching the comic, he started sharing it to Reddit, and suddenly Lunarbaboon was being seen and shared by tens of thousands of people. Flash forward a few years, and Lunarbaboon has over a million followers on Facebook. Grady generates $1,500 a month on Patreon and has launched several successful Kickstarter projects related to his comic. His latest Kickstarter, this one for a board game he helped illustrate and create, has already generated $50,000 in backing. I interviewed Grady about what it takes to maintain a successful webcomic, how he grew his audience, and why popular webcomics often make much more money from merchandise than they do from ads.
