Pater Noster Lighthouse Pater Noster is a small archipelago off the west coast of Sweden. The island group's name, which means “The Lord's Prayer,” is said to come from the tradition that mariners would recite the Lord's Prayer as they negotiated their way around the dangerous reefs in the vicinity. The 105-foot-tall, red, cast-iron lighthouse was constructed in 1868. Erik Nissen Johansen A complete restoration of the lighthouse began in 2002. Since 2020, the location has been operated as a small hotel. The facilities include rooms with a sea view, a restaurant, and three boathouses for dinner and conferences. Our guest, Erik Nissen Johansen is the founder and creative director of Stylt Trampoli, a multi-award winning hospitality design company. He is now a partner in the Pater Noster hotel. This is an edited version of a conversation first heard in episode 115 in April 2021.

St. Isaac does not flatter us with easy consolations. He sets before the monk the radical alternative: almsgiving is like the rearing of children, but stillness is the summit of perfection. One can pour out possessions, but if one's senses remain open to the world, unbarred gates, then the enemy will always find a way in. It is not enough to scatter coins if the mind is still scattered; the true work is to gather the heart into stillness, where God alone becomes its horizon. Isaac shows us the two wars. The first is fought outside: through sight and hearing, through eating and speech, through the ceaseless tangle of affairs. This “exterior warfare” is exhausting and subtle, for it draws the soul outward, dispersing its strength. But there is another war, fought within. Only when the gates of the senses are shut can one turn inward to confront the deeper enemy: thoughts, passions, memories, and the hidden demons that assault the heart. To reach the “rest in God,” the monk must first cease from unnecessary noise without, in order to learn serenity within. The blessedness of stillness, Isaac tells us, is to translate all one's activity into the work of prayer. A man who can remain in his cell, moving from divine service to divine service with nothing added, will never lack for what is necessary, because he has made God his sole concern. Even manual work, though permitted, is an accommodation for the weak. The more perfect path is prayer and compunction; prostrations before the Cross, like a convict bound, crying out for mercy without ceasing. Many Christians feel lost when it comes to prayer. How should one go about praying? Other believers feel aimless, "how can I come up with a novel & unique prayer every single day?!" In this episode I explain how the Lord's Prayer (Our Father, Pater Noster) serves as a scaffold for my own praying. Or, perhaps better, how the Lord's Prayer serves as a targeting system for my praying. Jesus' prayer is a prayer for soldiers. We were born into a war when we exited our mother's placenta and we were born into a war when we confessed Christ and became new creations. So I name each phrase of the established prayer and then theologically unpack what it means, peel back some layers, and even clarify how I pray with regard to that phrase. In the show's cultural-examination opening I variously discuss: the attacks on ICE agents, the rioting in Portland and Dallas and California, the ongoing opaque nature of the Epstein files, and what I want to happen with regard to what went on at Epstein's sex island.
