Max talks with John Fiscus, co-founder of The Flight Academy, and Director of Operations Jordan Ming to break down how one of the country's most respected Cirrus-focused training organizations was created, expanded, and refined over more than two decades. Whether you're an instructor considering the entrepreneurial leap, a pilot curious about how flight training businesses operate, or someone fascinated by the evolution of modern GA training, this conversation delivers clear, practical insights rooted in real experience. John opens with the origin story behind The Flight Academy—one shaped unexpectedly by the aftermath of 9/11. Before starting the company, John was an instructor and corporate pilot for Cirrus Aircraft, preparing for an airline career. When airline hiring collapsed overnight, he and colleague Luke realized they could not compete with furloughed, highly experienced pilots suddenly entering the market. But they also saw a growing demand: Cirrus owners nationwide needed instructors who truly understood their aircraft. Many local CFIs didn't yet have the expertise or avionics familiarity that early-generation Cirrus owners required. That gap created an opportunity. Instead of opening a traditional flight school with airplanes and an office, John and Luke launched The Flight Academy in 2002 with a completely different model. They owned no airplanes, no local training fleet, and no physical facility. Instead, they traveled around the country teaching owners in their own Cirrus aircraft. This approach dramatically reduced overhead while giving customers access to specialized training. What seemed unconventional at the time turned out to be the ideal way to enter the market, and demand steadily grew. As the business matured, the founders recognized the need for a home base and added a small office at Boeing Field. Eventually, they purchased their first aircraft—not a leaseback, but a nearly new Cirrus that offered strong depreciation benefits and made financial sense for the business. Today the school operates 13 aircraft across two locations—Seattle and the Portland area—supported by eight to ten instructors, depending on season and demand. About 70–80% of all hours flown at The Flight Academy are dual instruction, a reflection of their focus on high-quality training rather than simple aircraft rental volume. Jordan explains that this training-centric model shapes everything about how the business operates. The Flight Academy books training in full-day or half-day blocks, giving instructors and clients the freedom to adapt to weather, focus on deep learning, and avoid the churn of hourly scheduling. Their instructors also spend significant time traveling to clients, giving them a unique range of experience compared to CFIs who fly the same local routes every day. Many instructors make multiple coast-to-coast flights before reaching the airlines, which sets them apart in both skill and confidence. Beyond daily training, the school has diversified its business through multiple complementary revenue streams. John describes their history of Atlantic ferry flights, delivering both new and pre-owned Cirrus aircraft to Europe. He also recounts the dramatic ferry incident—captured on video—in which a malfunctioning transfer tank forced a ferry pilot to deploy the Cirrus parachute into the Pacific. That experience eventually led the team to discontinue Pacific ferrying, though they continue to complete many Atlantic deliveries. Another major offering is their Vision Jet program, which includes discovery flights, pre-type-rating preparation, and training support. Luke also works with Arista to support the Vision Jet pre-owned market, creating a powerful ecosystem that blends aircraft sales, owner transitions, and specialized instruction. Jordan emphasizes that this interlocking structure allows the team to provide a seamless experience for owners, from first flight through long-term advanced training. Perhaps the most distinctive part of The Flight Academy's identity is their adventure trips—all-inclusive guided flying experiences to destinations such as Alaska, Morocco, the Caribbean, Europe, and New England during fall foliage season. These trips sell out consistently and create long-lasting friendships among participating owners. Jordan notes that many pilots appreciate having experts plan the hotels, customs logistics, activities, and daily flight legs—allowing them to simply enjoy the journey and the aircraft. When it comes to hiring CFIs, John is clear: "We don't hire pilots. We hire teachers." A strong instructor mindset matters more than flight time or ratings. He looks for individuals who demonstrate genuine interest in the business, a thoughtful approach to training, and the professionalism needed to work with sophisticated clients. He also shares hard-earned lessons about policies, cancellations, contracts, and pricing—key areas where many new flight school owners struggle. We pull up a chair with Thomas Jay Oord and guest Chris Lilley for a spirited, vulnerable conversation about omnipotence, evil, and why love may be the only measure of divine power that doesn't betray our moral core. The stakes are high: beliefs about God's power shape how we face suffering, talk to our kids about hope, and decide whether prayer is protest, surrender, or both. If you haven't heard our first conversation with Tom about God's power, we recommend checking that out first here.Tom lays out open and relational theism: God moves through time with us, gives and receives, and has a nature of uncontrolling love. From there he challenges three classic readings of omnipotence—doing anything, exerting all power, and unilaterally determining outcomes—arguing they either collapse logically or become morally intolerable in the face of real-world evil. Chris, a former Thomist and Reformed teacher now in the Episcopal ordination process, offers a thoughtful pushback: if omnipotence can be carefully qualified, should we abandon it, or teach it better? His turning point is painfully human: holding his newborn while teaching election and realizing he couldn't preach a God who ordains every outcome and still call that good.We wrestle with creation, “almighty” in the liturgy, liberation theology's demand for a God who not only intends justice but accomplishes it, and a hard question about the afterlife: could you rest eternally with a God who could have stopped your suffering? Tom reframes power as maximal influence—everlasting, universal, persuasive—rather than control. Kyle names the unresolved middle: if God could fix it later, why not now? A handful of videos on social media depict a recent gathering, reportedly in Georgia, where a group of people were gathered to chant “Atlanta” is “Atlantis.” Supposedly they were there to create an “energy vortex” in order to summon the spirit of Atlantis and reclaim the city for black people. What exactly is this supposed to mean?Atlanta was founded in 1837 as a railroad terminus originally named "Terminus,” because the city marked the end of the Western & Atlantic Railroad. It was renamed "Marthasville" in 1843 and then changed to "Atlanta" in 1845. Some believe the city name is a shorthand for “Atlantica,” as in the Atlantic Ocean. Others believe the city was named after Atalanta, a mythologized heroin known for her speed and independence (the wild boar hunt and race against her suitors) which were qualities of the growing rail hub that is Atlanta. The mythical land and concept of Atlantis in some ways even predates Plato, though he is credited with its story. Writing in his Timaeus and Critias Plato derived the Atlantis story from Solon, an Athenian lawmaker who learned of the same from an elderly priest in the land of Egypt at the Temple of Sais. At the time, around 630-560 BC, the records were already at least 8,000 years old. Reportedly a global cataclysm destroyed Atlantis sometime between 9,600 to 11,600 years ago. Later on Francis Bacon termed his ideal city the New Atlantis or Platonopolis. The timeframe noted by Plato places the destruction within the window of the Younger Dryas, 12,900 to 11,700 years ago (10,900-9,7000 BC). It's one thing to be unaware of seemingly lost, drowned or buried history, but another to be so shockingly unaware of basic mythology and recent local history. It is understandable so many are disenfranchised by the lies and ego of mainline historical narratives, but the turn to Q-Anon, Flat Earth, Tataria, and World Fair conspiracies appears to be another layer of disinformation rather than the truth. La semana pasada Donald Trump sorprendió al anunciar el indulto al expresidente hondureño Juan Orlando Hernández, condenado a 45 años por narcotráfico. Se encargó de anunciarlo personalmente a través de Truth Social con una calurosa felicitación. Esto ocurrió dos días antes de las elecciones presidenciales en Honduras, que se celebraron el pasado día 30, lo que provocó cierto estupor entre los hondureños. Hernández, presidente del país entre 2014 y 2022, fue condenado el año pasado por un tribunal de Nueva York por colaborar con cárteles de la droga para introducir cientos de toneladas de cocaína en EEUU a cambio de sobornos millonarios. Honduras, en el corazón de la ruta centroamericana del narcotráfico, se transformó de este modo en tiempos de Hernández en un narcoestado. Las investigaciones de la DEA demostraron que recibió dinero en cooperación con familiares y altos cargos policiales para permitir el tránsito de drogas. No es la primera vez que sucede. El panameño Manuel Noriega y el guatemalteco Alfonso Portillo ya fueron juzgados y condenados en Estados Unidos hace años. El indulto de Hernández ha sido especialmente llamativo ya que se produjo en la recta final de la campaña electoral, una campaña en la que Trump manifestó su preferencia por uno de los candidatos, Tito Asfura, un conservador del Partido Nacional (el mismo de Hernández) y exalcalde de Tegucigalpa. Dijo de él que es “el único verdadero amigo de la Libertad en Honduras” y condicionó la ayuda estadounidense a su victoria. Durante su primer mandato Trump mantuvo una muy buena relación con Hernández, un político muy astuto que durante sus años en la presidencia se trabajó buenos contactos entre los políticos de Washington y los empresarios e inversores estadounidenses de California. A estos últimos les ofreció zonas especiales dentro del país que tendrían unas condiciones favorables para facilitar la inversión. Algunas se llegaron a poner el marcha, pero aquel esquema, denominado ZEDE, se interrumpió con la llegada de la izquierdista Xiomara Castro al poder en 2022. La investigación sobre las actividades ilícitas de Hernández había comenzado años antes, en la época de Obama, y continuó con Trump. Extraditado en 2022 tras dejar el poder, cumplía su condena en un penal de Virginia Occidental. El indulto, gestado en Mar-a-Lago, ha sido el resultado final de una campaña muy intensa de cabildeo que encabezó Roger Stone, el famoso consultor político y confidente personal de Trump. Stone persuadió al presidente de que sería a un golpe para Castro y mejoraría la suerte de los inversores estadounidenses en Honduras. El hecho es que Hernández ya era muy impopular en Honduras y allí no ha terminado de entenderse. Tampoco en Estados Unidos, donde muchos ven en esto una contradicción ya que, por un lado, está sitiando a Maduro tras acusarle de narcotráfico, mientras que, por otro, indulta a un narcotraficante condenado. Todo en medio de unas elecciones que están resultando mucho más difíciles y divisivas de lo que se esperaba.
