And she teaches at Oxford University's Business School where she created pioneering courses on trust in the digital age has become an expert on trust in the modern world. She's written three books: What's Mine is Yours, Who Can You Trust, and How to Trust and Be Trusted. Her TED talks have amassed over 5 million views.  Notes: Trust is being comfortable with uncertainty. Capability and Character - Assholes are capable people with low character. Demonstrate the ability to take risks. Confidence in the unknown. Healthy challenge and push mentality. Trust willing – Lead with Trust. Make the trust wager. What's the best way to earn someone's trust? LEAD with trust. Trust them first. This also creates a highly attractive company or team. Don't you want to attract highly trusting, capable people? The best way to do that is to lead with trust. Be more trust willing. Lead with Trust. Jim Collins story. Make the trust wager. You don't have to earn it, you got it. Willingness to be a beginner. Be curious. Look stupid at first. Those are good qualities in a leader. For keynote speaking: Share your expertise, but don't seek approval Share your stories, but don't look for validation Share your passion, but don't perform for the applause Don't sell from the stage. Don't show your book. Don't give your resume. Honor the present. If you're running a meeting, start it on time. Honor the people who showed up on time. Leaders who are overscheduled… It's usually their fault and it comes from ego. If you've hired a capable team, then you don't have to be in every meeting. Also, if you're always late, you aren't reliable. And that becomes part of your reputation. That's not something we want to be known for. How can people trust you if you're always late? They won't. You aren't reliable if you're always late. Reliability is a big part of your reputation. It can become the thing you're known for. That's bad. The power of consistency: Intensity makes a good story. Consistency makes progress. Consistency builds trust. Leaders who are overscheduled have a problem they've created for themselves. It's usually from ego. Interviewing leaders for jobs. High character is a must. We can teach capabilities later.  Paul Simon's audiobook with Pushkin is awesome. Rachel's five principles for trust: Competence: Having the skills, knowledge, time, and resources to do what you say you'll do  Reliability: Being dependable and consistent in your actions  Integrity: Being honest about your intentions and motives, and ensuring your words and actions align  Empathy: Caring about others' interests and how your actions affect them  Consistent action: Earning trust through how you show up, set expectations, and deliver acts of caring Life/Career Advice: Don't get boxed in too early and grow a career based on being able to tell people at parties that you work at a prestigious company.  Look for great teams and great bosses. The industry doesn't matter as much as the people. Culture is everything. People are everything. And then when you're younger it's helpful to be a generalist. Know a little about a lot of things. But as you get older, it's useful to become a specialist at something. Become an expert. Go deep on a topic. This is similar to what Mike Maples Jr said on episode #619.

In this episode, we explore the complexities of confronting the reality of UFO disclosure. Information that significantly challenges your worldview can be hard to process. In light of UFO whistleblower David Grusch's recent allegations—that the US government is in possession of non-human craft and bodies—even those within the community who thought that they were ready for these kinds of revelations have found themselves reeling. In this episode, we discuss ontological shock—what it is, how to cope with it, and how to avoid the major pitfalls. And we work on beginning to resolve our ontological shock but getting ourselves reoriented in a world where nothing is as we once thought it was. No matter where you are in your journey, I hope this episode offers you something that you can take for the road. And if you know people who are just starting out, or who are finding themselves feeling disoriented right now in ways they can't identify, this is a great episode to share with them.___________________________TRY BETTERHELPThis episode is brought to you by BetterHelp. With all the Collusion and Corruption Everywhere…When we look at the chaotic situation in our world today, we have a tendency to see these crises as isolated events. But they are not. They are all interconnected with each other and point to an end-game clearly revealed in Scripture. Whether its inflation, cancel culture, a compromised media, quantitative easing, the Covid mandates and passports, ANTIFA, BLM, January 6th, Russia and Ukraine, China and Taiwan, transgenderism, the de-platforming of conservatives, the Freedom Convoy, DOD funded bio-weapons labs, stolen elections, or any of a million different variants, each of these point to an agenda or an end goal that we can only see when we group them all together. It's much like a giant chess game, with each event part of a grand strategy designed to gain position for the coming world leader and global governance. Surprised? Don't be. Jesus told us all these things in advance so we would not be deceived. “For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. See, I have told you beforehand” – Matthew 24:24-25. And according to Jesus, all these events are just the beginning of labor pains (Matt. 24:8). Who Can You Trust for the Truth? In Matthew 24, in what is known as the Olivet Discourse, Jesus warned us about what to expect in the time leading up to His return. And His key warning had to do with deception. Consider the following. •  “Take heed that no one deceives you” – Matthew 24:4. •  “For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,' and will deceive many” – Matthew 24:4. •  “Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many” – Matthew. 24:11. •  “For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect” – Matthew 24:24. And then it gets even worse. “For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect's sake those days will be shortened” – Matthew 24:21-22. So what are we to do? How can we make sure our families and those we love are not deceived and swept up in the apostasy that defines the last days (2 Thes. 2:3)? And how can we remain unmovable and steadfast in our faith (1 Cor. 15:58), especially as we see the day approaching? Who can we believe? Who can we trust? Certainly not the media, nor the government, nor Hollywood. So, where do we turn for truth? Great question. Timely question. And one that begs to be answered. Join us as we attempt to uncover the thread that runs through all this uncertain chaos that fills the airwaves, 24/7, as we discover from the Scriptures what we can expect next on the prophetic timetable, as we learn how to Leave Laodicea behind. You ask that now and no one knows because they don't have shared values. What was agreed was valuable was fulfilling your duty and your responsibility. It's a great pleasure to welcome back Gillian Tett, who chairs the Editorial Board in the US for the Financial Times. She has a regular column at FT, writing about finance, business and the political economy. Gillian's work is all about looking at the world through different lenses, and moving from tunnel vision to lateral vision. It's about leveraging diversity, embracing the unknown, and learning from others in non-related fields, cultures, and geographies.  In this interview, we talk about her new book, "Anthro-Vision: A New Way to See in Business and Life," and we cover a lot of topics from an anthropological perspective. We also talk about controversial topics like Bitcoin and Trumpism, as well as more enduring issues like leadership, and what that looks like in this VUCA world that we live in. So whether you're a business leader, a policy maker, an investor, or even just a parent worrying about how your kids appear to be over-reliant on technology, I hope you will find this conversation as fascinating and inspirational as I did.  What Is Covered: - The three principles of the anthropology mindset and what being an anthropologist means in the corporate world - How the concept of barter and social silences plays out in the world of AgTech and “free” services - Why teenagers are glued to their cell phones and what kind of needs in physical space the cyberspace is fulfilling - The concept of fast and slow money, and people's behaviours around money  - Understanding Trumpism from an anthropological perspective - How Bitcoin and cryptocurrency tribes are changing the economy and the power structures   Key Takeaways and Learnings:  - Barter trade terms in the world of AgTech need to be reset to make it more equitable, giving a lot more transparency to consumers, giving consumers more control over the duration of the trade, and creating data portability. - The four skills that anthropology can offer to any leader are the ability to have empathy for difference, to flip the lens and look back at yourself with a sense of humility, the ability to look outside the model, and to recognize that we need to think about people's human behavior and how culture matters.  - Cultural phenomena like Balinese cockfighting rituals are a good way to make sense of Trumpism, and of what's happening with Elon Musk and Bitcoin in terms of defining tribal groups, the role of rituals and symbols, and the role the emotions play Links and Resources Mentioned in This Episode:  - “Anthro-Vision: A New Way to See in Business and Life” by Gillian Tett https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Anthro-Vision/Gillian-Tett/9781982140960  - Connect with Gillian Tett on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/gillian-tett/  and Twitter https://twitter.com/gilliantett  - Data & Society https://datasociety.net/  - ReD Associates https://www.redassociates.com/  - “The Interpretation of Cultures” by Clifford Geertz https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0465097197/  - Why Anthropologists are More Interested in Bitcoin Than Economists, by Mick Morucci https://bitcoinmagazine.com/culture/anthropologists-are-interested-in-bitcoin  - “Who Can You Trust” by Rachel Botsman https://rachelbotsman.com/books/  - The Conversation https://theconversation.com/global  - Colliding with the Unexpected with Gillian Tett on OutsideVoices Podcast https://outsidelens.com/colliding-with-the-unexpected-with-gillian-tett/  Connect with Mark Bidwell: - LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/markbidwell/  - Twitter https://twitter.com/markehb

In this week's episode of Star Wars English Class, Julia teaches Fern about unreliable narrators! But to learn about unreliable narrators, we must first learn about story, plot, and narration (spoiler alert: that's not the only list of three things in this week's episode). How can the same story be told in different ways by different narrators? What are the different kinds of unreliable narrators? How does the language of film convey unreliability? And how can we determine the “facts” of a story? “We grew up in a Tetris world of trust. There were rules, top-down enforcement and we looked up to people that we trust. Our kids are growing up in a Minecraft world of trust that is completely distributed.” In this special series we’ve been exploring how we might move from crisis to transformation in an age of pandemics. We’ve been challenged to rethink our place in an entangled world, and to be good ancestors who protect future generations. We’ve explored how to build equitable health systems, inclusive and sustainable economies, and how to address the climate crisis. And we’ve explored new frames to address entrenched inequality and injustice. In the last episode of the current series, Peter explores the two X factors of 2020 – leadership and trust. Ask yourself this question: what differentiates the places around the world that have responded to Covid-19 effectively from those that have seen uncontrolled viral spread, excess mortality and economic devastation? The answer is not the number of ventilators or hospital beds, not the concentration of scientific expertise, not GDP. It’s leadership. And trust goes hand in hand with leadership. High-trust societies have, for the most part, banded together with a sense of common purpose. Low-trust societies, or those in which leaders have squandered trust, have fractured and continue to flail.Trust is at the heart of what happens in humanity’s next chapter. Global threats call for solidarity, and systemic change can only happen when people with different worldviews come together. Trust is the glue that binds us together, but it seems to be in short supply these days.Rachel Botsman is a leading expert on trust in the modern world. She is the author of Who Can You Trust?, which explores how technology is transforming our relationship to trust. She’s the host of the Trust Issues podcast, and as the first Trust Fellow at Saïd Business School, Rachel aims to challenge and change the way people think about trust and related topics such as power, influence, truth and beliefs.Rachel also gave us the title for this episode - Tetris in a Minecraft World. It’s a neat metaphor for the profound transformation we’re experiencing in a world that’s moved from hierarchies to distributed networks, a world where the rules of the game are being upended.Peter chats to Rachel about trust in the era of Covid-19, especially when it comes to vaccines, the “Cummings Effect” that occurs when leaders flout their own rules, what Rachel calls the “trust leaps” that power reinvention, and the implications for leadership in a world rife with uncertainty.Reimagine is presented by Oxford Answers and the Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship at the University of Oxford’s Saïd Business School. Stay tuned for the end of the podcast where Rachel comes to an interesting realization about her own work and the introduction of the idea of “trust inequity.” Rachel is the author of two groundbreaking books that have been translated into 12 languages. What's Mine is Yours predicted the rise of the ‘sharing economy' and Who Can You Trust? - an exploration of how technology is transforming trust. Her TED talks have been viewed more than 4 million times and she is the host of Trust Issues – a podcast that explores trust through the lenses of popular culture, politics, business and psychology. When It Comes to Coronavirus Info, Who Can You Trust? (0:31)Guest: Scott C. Ratzan MD, MPA, Distinguished Lecturer, Graduate School of Public Health, City University of New YorkShould you cancel your travel plans because of coronavirus? Keep your kids home from school? Stop going to church and other gatherings? It's really hard to know with the steady drumbeat of new COVID-19 cases and deaths around the country. A group of leading public health experts have published an “urgent call” for a coordinated effort to tell Americans what they need to know about coronavirus. Why Hundreds of Scientific Studies Get Retracted Every Year (20:16)Guest: Ivan Oransky, Co-Founder of RetractionWatch.com, Distinguished Writer in Residence at New York University's Carter Journalism InstituteSince the start of this year, more than 200 studies published in scientific journals have been retracted because of mistakes – or in some cases, outright fraud by the scientists who did them. A lot of these studies got tons of hoopla when they were first published, including breathless headlines in the press. And then, a year later, five years later – in a few cases more than a decade later – the journal that published the study says, “Oops! We shouldn't have published that.” But at that point, isn't the damage already done? A retraction rarely gets the same publicity that the original study had. Treating Gun Violence Like a Public Health Epidemic (37:14)Guest: Megan Ranney, MD, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at Brown University, Chief Research Officer for the American Foundation for Firearm Injury ReductionFor the first time in 20 years, the US government is offering grants to researchers looking into gun violence. Since 1996, there's been a moratorium on any federal funding for firearm safety research for fear results of that research might be used to restrict gun access in the US. So what's changed? Emergency room physician Megan Ranney has been researching firearm injuries for years, despite the federal moratorium. New Treatment for Child Anxiety (50:50)Guest: Wendy Silverman, Alfred A. Messer Professor of Child Psychiatry and Psychology, Director of the Yale Child Study Center Program for Anxiety Disorders, Yale UniversityAnxiety disorders in children are common, but also really hard to treat. Only half of kids with anxiety respond to standard therapy treatment and medication. So researchers at Yale University have just come up with a novel approach that's working – show anxious youth happy faces and sad faces over and over again. What Will It Take for Women to Be Taken Seriously in Autoracing? (1:07:37)Guest: Jackie Heinricher, Principal owner of Heinricher racing, Race Car Driver and Leader of the First Full-Season All-Female Team of Drivers to the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. You know those long-distance relays where a team takes turns running stretches of the race over a 24-hour period? There's an endurance event like that in auto racing – maybe you saw it featured in the new film “Ford vs. Ferrari”? 24 Hours of Le Mans is the premier event in endurance car racing. In North America, there's a series of similar races and last year, for the first time in history, an all-female team of drivers competed in the full season. They even placed in the top 10. But now that team is disbanded and founder Jackie Heinricher is trying to figure out just what it will take for women to be taken seriously her sport. Is the Ocean Turning Into Vinaigrette? Ocean Acidification, Explained. (1:27:43)Guest: Scott Doney, PhD, Oceanographer and Environmental Scientist, University of VirginiaTwenty years from now, scientists say virtually all of the planet's coral reefs will be gone, because ocean water will be too warm and too acidic for coral.

Rachel Botsman is a trust expert. She predicted the rise of the sharing economy and wrote two books about trust — Who Can You Trust and What’s Mine is Yours. She also has a podcast called Trust Issues. So why are we talking about trust? As we’ve detailed, the energy system is changing fast. New distributed energy players are entering the space, customers are increasingly in control of their energy choices, and utilities must think differently about their relationships with customers in order to remain competitive. Trust is a big part of this shift.“Regulation will not protect you ... so much of trust is tied to power ... you can have the most powerful lobbying groups, regulation, but it won’t protect you around behavioral changes. When the consumer says, I want this in my life and actually the old way didn’t really work for me. It was just money and power centralizing something... regulation will take time. But it will not protect you.”Rachel calls trust the “currency” or the “social glue” of life and business. But we don’t necessarily think about it in that way. “Companies and sectors are starting to realize that if you put money, profits, growth, everything tied to the transactional side of things, if you put those above, and ahead, and continually prioritize them over the currency of trust, you're going to run into problems and issues,” says Rachel. In this episode, we’ll uncover how trust guides everything around us — and what that means for businesses that are facing change.

Technology is changing who and how we trust. While our faith in institutions such as governments, media, and charities has hit an all-time low, many of us will rent a complete stranger’s home, exchange digital currencies, and trust bots. When we trust Airbnb more than our elected leaders, what does that mean for society? Rachel Botsman, expert in technology and trust, says this fundamental shift in trust has far-reaching consequences. She wrote the book Who Can You Trust?, and lectures at Oxford University. General Data Protection Regulation. Databeskyttelsesforordningen. Persondataforordningen. The concepts of solvency, sustainability, and budget impact are common in discussions of Social Security, but are not well understood. Currently, the Social Security Board of Trustees projects program cost to rise by 2035 so that taxes will be enough to pay for only 75 percent of scheduled benefits... adjustments to taxes or benefits that offset the effects of the lower birth rate may restore solvency for the Social Security program on a sustainable basis for the foreseeable future. Finally, as Treasury debt securities (trust fund assets) are redeemed in the future, they will just be replaced with public debt. If trust fund assets are exhausted without reform, benefits will necessarily be lowered with no effect on budget deficits. — Chief Actuary of the Social Security Administration.
