The Loft with Andy Strickland in conversation with David Eastaugh Formed in 1980 as The Living Room by Peter Astor (vocals, guitar), Bill Prince (bass), Andy Strickland (guitar) and Dave Morgan (drums), the band changed its name when they discovered a local music venue also called The Living Room. The venue was being run by Alan McGee, with whom The Loft struck up a friendship and played several gigs for. After signing to McGee's fledgling Creation Records label, the debut single "Why Does the Rain?" was issued in 1984. "Up the Hill and Down the Slope" was issued the following year, earning both band and label some critical success. A national tour as the opening act for The Colourfield was intended to give the band further exposure, but tensions within the band led to a sensational split live onstage of the Hammersmith Palais, on the final date of the tour.

Functional medicine practitioners often take a “Foods First” approach, recommending dietary modifications to improve health. However, for those with low stomach acid, diet alone may not be enough to ensure adequate nutrition. Low stomach acid can impair digestive ability, causing nutritional deficiencies even in those individuals consuming an optimal diet. This article will focus on the main digestive chemical associated with the stomach, hydrochloric acid. The causes of low stomach acid and the associated symptoms will be covered. In addition, natural treatment options for low stomach acid, such as betaine HCL and herbal bitters will be discussed. What is Digestion? Digestion is the process of breaking food down into particles small enough so that the nutrients in the food can be absorbed and then transported throughout the body. Digestion begins in the mouth with the mechanical process of chewing along with salivary enzymes that begin the digestive process. This process is continued as the food passes into the stomach, activating the release of hydrochloric acid. The bolus of food then passes to the small intestines where the majority of digestion takes place. The useful nutrients are digested and absorbed and the waste products are sent through the large intestines for evacuation as feces. Why Does the Stomach Contain Hydrochloric Acid? The stomach is a naturally acidic environment, especially following a meal, with a normal pH value of 3 and an absence of stomach acid (achlorhydria) is obtained with a pH > 7.1 This acidity comes from the hydrochloric acid that is secreted by the parietal cells in the lining of the stomach. Healthy stomach acid levels serve as an immune system barrier, providing a first line of defense against unwanted bacterial or microbial invaders that enter the stomach. Hydrochloric acid is also necessary for the digestion of proteins. Proteins are a conglomeration of amino acids folded together into different shapes. Stomach acid serves to denature (unfold) the proteins and expose the bonds that hold the amino acids together. These bonds can then be cleaved by pepsin, which breaks the protein down into smaller, easier to digest, amino acids. The formation of pepsin from pepsinogen is dependent on sufficient stomach acid levels as well. Hydrochloric acid is also responsible for deactivating the enzymes of salivary amylase as it enters the stomach and for stimulating the release of cholecystokinin in the small intestines. Both processes are essential for healthy digestive function. Certain vitamins and minerals depend on hydrochloric acid to liberate them from their carriers, such as vitamin B12 and calcium. Having low stomach acid levels can impair all of these functions. What causes low stomach acid levels? Factors that contribute to low stomach acid include: Chronic stress Aging Poor diet Infections Medication use Stress—Stress impairs digestion. Chronic stress may decrease the production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach due to associated nutrient deficiencies.2 Stress also causes the vagus nerve to lose its proper tone. The vagus nerve is a major part of the parasympathetic nervous system, and it is deeply involved in stomach acid production. With chronic stress it loses its ability to fire properly which disrupts normal stomach acid production. Aging—Low levels of stomach acid following a meal are more common with aging. Studies that compared stomach acid levels in young individuals (mean age 25) versus older individuals (mean age 75) found that older individuals experienced low levels of stomach acid following a meal for a greater length of time than their younger counterparts. It took 89 minutes for the elderly participants versus 42 minutes for the younger participants to regain normal stomach acid levels (pH 3.0) following a “standard meal”.1, 3,

This week on Race Capitol, tune in to our latest: "Reclamation East End: Resisting the Recreation Plantation", where we dive into an in-depth interview with Brian Palmer of the Friend of the East End, about his entry into the work of reclaiming East End Cemetery and archiving Richmond Black history. The cemetery has over 15,000 people buried there and is at risk of becoming a new bike lane and green space, per the Enrichmond plan. The Enrichmond master plan is lacking the critical preservation component that would ensure the evidence of Black existence and resistance isn’t buried under gentrification to come. We discuss how the Enrichmond Foundation has exploited the labor and efforts of the descendants of East End Cemetery. The white led non-profit has now been given ownership of the land, as they are the sole recipient of the $400,000 grant from the Virginia Outdoor Association and now is planning what we call the “recreation plantation”, that includes construction but no preservation. Per usual, the nonprofit industrial complex has teamed up with Black elected officials who have lost the political will and moral courage to fight, and still, we rise. The resistance to our sacred spaces lives on through persistence of the Friends of the East End Cemetery. -- It takes our team about 30 hours each week to research, interview, record, and produce our politically educational episodes. What you’ll learn about in this episode: Why organizations do more and more DEI work but seem to make no real progress, because they focus on Minimizing the differences instead of maximizing them! focused on Minimization How to determine if your organization is operating from Minimization, and what impact this can have on your workplace and your team Why being in Minimization will predictably bring lukewarm compliance and wasted resources without getting results. How to do DEI work with intense and effective commitment Why Minimization means being unable to differentiate the “differences that make a difference” when you need to be able to differentiate Why the Minimization stage can be a difficult barrier to hiring, retaining and promoting diverse talent How the inability to differentiate can also be costly in your market and within your relationship to existing and potential customers or clients Why cultural competence is shown to be a key separator between the lowest performing and highest performing teams DEI Work and the Minimization Barrier If you’ve been following the What’s The Difference podcast for a while, you know that there are five stages of cultural competence that individuals and organizations move through as they learn to navigate what makes us all different from each other. Today, I want to talk to you about the third stage, Minimization, and its impact on your organization’s DEI work. Minimization is the stage that the vast majority of organizations and individuals find themselves operating from. The big problem here is that the first three stages (denial, polarization, and Minimization) are the ineffective stages, and it isn’t until the fourth stage where we can recognize and accept our differences that we are able to successfully navigate across differences and create a truly diverse, equitable and inclusive workplace. So what exactly is Minimization? This is the stage in which we focus on “equality” by attempting to treat everyone as “fairly” as possible…without taking into account the differences that make a difference. It’s about setting the finish line for the marathon at the same place for everyone, without taking into account how close or far away everyone is starting the race. Minimization attempts to treat everyone equally and turn a blind eye to their differences, without recognizing that sometimes they really are “differences that make a difference”. This is why many organizations who have the best of intentions spend time, money, and resources on DEI work without actually moving the needle, and the Minimization barrier can be a difficult one to cross if you aren’t able to see and recognize the differences that make a difference. DEI Work that Moves the Needle So what can be done to ensure that the DEI work you’re doing gets traction and makes a difference? First, you need to identify where your organization is within the hierarchy of cultural competence. Look at your leadership team, at the managers within your organization. Are you hiring, retaining, and promoting diverse talent? If your leadership team doesn’t reflect the organization as a whole, this is a strong indicator that you’re in the Minimization stage. The next step is to begin doing the difficult, important development work to help you move out of Minimization and into the fourth stage, acceptance. This requires a strong buy-in from your entire organization and an ongoing commitment to development, individually and collectively. Why Does it Matter? According to the findings of researchers Martha Maznevski and Joseph Distefano, diverse teams that lack cultural competence are among the lowest-performing teams. The good news is that teams that are both diverse and culturally competent are some of the highest-performing teams. Cultural competence makes a dramatic difference in a team’s ability to work together and operate at the highest levels. So, while the necessary development work can be difficult, the results speak for themselves. Research shows that cultural competence results in greater diversity and higher levels of engagement and inclusion. DEI work is vitally important, but before it can make an impact we must move our organizations out of the first three stages of cultural competence and into the higher fourth and fifth stages, acceptance and adaptation. Only then can we begin to gain traction and move the needle forward. Turns out, the majority of American Christians may not actually be Christians. They like their religion with a strong dose of personal opinion, politics, and a heaping helping of heresy. They Might Be Giants With A Timely Reminder: “Science Is Real” Fans of the band They Might Be Giants are likely to be familiar with the band’s version of the 1959 Tom Glazer song “Why Does The Sun Shine?” As they sing, “The sun is a mass / of incandescent gas / a gigantic nuclear furnace.” In their album “Here Comes Science,” the band revisits that song, and follows it with a fact-checking track titled “Why Does the Sun Really Shine?” In the lyrics, they describe the science of plasma. The album also includes an ode to the elements, descriptions of what blood does in the body, and songs describing the scientific process. In a reminder that resonates for the start of 2021, one song is titled “Science is Real.” In this archival segment from 2009, John Linnell and John Flansburgh of They Might Be Giants join Ira in the studio to discuss the album, and to play some science songs. Name That Call: Test Your Animal Sound Trivia Can you differentiate the cry of an Antarctic Weddell seal from the song of an emperor penguin? How about the bellows of a howler monkey from a warthog’s rumbling roar? The animal kingdom is filled with diverse calls and sounds, and for World Wildlife Day earlier this week on Tuesday, we curated them—in a quiz. SciFri’s digital producer Daniel Peterschmidt teamed up with Google Earth to create an interactive quiz that hops you around the world and highlights the many (sometimes surprising) sounds that species make. Daniel challenges Ira to an animal sound showdown. Test your knowledge and explore the wide world of screeches, howls, and growls with the Science Friday Google Earth Animal Sound Quiz! The Luxury Ostrich Eggs Of The Bronze And Iron Age Upper Class Today, if you want to show off that you’ve made it, you might buy a top-of-the-line Rolex watch, or line your garage with Ferraris and Rolls Royces. But in the Iron and Bronze age, one of the luxury goods of choice was to put a highly decorated ostrich egg in your tomb. These status symbols have been found in multiple European Iron and Bronze Age locations, despite ostriches not being indigenous to the area. A team of scientists wanted to know the origins of these eggs—and just how they made it from Africa into the hands of the Iron and Bronze Age elite. Mediterranean archaeologist Tamar Hodos, an author on the study recently published in Antiquity, explains how the team determined that these eggs came from wild ostriches, rather than captive birds, and what this reveals about the ancient luxury trade. See a gallery of these ostrich eggs below!

For a Limited Time, You Get Free Access at http://REIDealMachine.com/ Gregg & I Discuss: Why Invest in Jacksonville, Florida Real Estate Turn Key Rental Properties Offer Easy Scale Build to Rent-Brand New Assets Why a “Focused Approach” Beats a “New Markets Approach” Investing in Jacksonville, Florida Turn Key Rental Properties-Podcast Episode Highlights What are Turn Key Rental Properties? Why Should I Invest? Gregg Cohen, founder of JWB Real Estate, joins us on the show today to discuss turn key investment properties. Real Estate investors in the olden days were limited to investing in their local market-where they could physically manage the tenants, repairs, and any other issues that arise from owning property long term. In today's world, with the internet and property managers like JWB who offer fully renovated houses with tenants in place, out of state, or even out of the country owners can enjoy cash flow in any real estate market. With so many markets available, let's talk about why I like Jacksonville, Florida, and the reason I sought to invite Gregg onto the show. How to Scale a Real Estate Investment Portfolio: My main business is buying & selling houses as quickly as I can. Sometimes completing renovations, sometimes selling nearly as-is, with only minor cosmetics done after we buy the property. Even though I close close to 300 deals per year, when it comes to passive income, I prefer buying turnkey investment properties. I also have no issue with long distance ownership. The bottom line is that I can scale quickly when turnkey companies are placing tenants and managing the details for me. The extent of my involvement is the heavy lifting on the front end to actually close the purchase: the loan application, signing documents, and providing the 20% down payment. Why Invest in the Jacksonville, Florida Real Estate Market? The Jacksonville, Florida real estate market is attractive to me first for location. There are jobs and population from all over the U.S. migrating to Florida, and Jacksonville's pricing hasn't gotten detached from wages. Normally I prefer market's with 5 Million people or more living in the metro area, but Jacksonville has about 1.5 million. Even though it's smaller than I'd normally prefer, Jacksonville is among the fastest growing large cities in the US. Why Does the Age of a Home Impacts the Value and Maintenance Cost? On this episode, Gregg and I also discuss his brand new construction homes which are built to rent. Turn key rental property investing normally focuses on existing houses: buy a house, renovate a house, then rent to a tenant, before selling the house with tenant to an investor like me. JWB actually began buying lots and building brand new homes for the same purpose: to provide investors with a brand new turnkey rental investment. One note-I have since attempted buying the brand new offering only to find out that they are in very short supply. Somewhat disappointed... Anytime I consider buying a turnkey rental property, the biggest variable, after location, which affects price is the current condition. I love the idea of a new home-since the entire house is new. That's not usually an option, so I evaluate the home based on it's current condition. Unless you're an expert in construction, the best bet is usually buying recently renovated turnkey real estate investments from the property management company who actually completed the renovation. You still need to to due diligence on the company, the house, & the market before you close the deal. Many of the houses I've bought "turn key" were simply occupied rentals bought from mom & pop landlords. In those instances, I expect a risky tenant, many repair issues, and a significantly below market price to account for the risk. I understand that long term, my maintenance costs will be very high-when compared to a turnkey investment property purchased through a full service turnkey rental property provider, such as JWB real estate. Hey, let’s meet last week for coffee. Okay, we can’t meet in the past… yet. But could it be only a matter of time before we can? In an attempt to defy the grandfather paradox, scientists try sending a photon back in time to destroy itself. Also, find out how teleportation allows particles to instantaneously skip through space-time and why sending humans wouldn’t violate the laws of physics. But before you pack your bags for that instantaneous trip to Paris, we need to understand the nature of time. A physicist offers a testable theory and ponders how it bears on free will. Plus, feel as if time comes to a standstill when you’re standing in line? Tricks for altering your perception of time while you wait. Some businesses already use them on you. Guests: Richard Muller – Physicist, University of California Berkeley, author of “Now: The Physics of Time” Seth Lloyd – Professor of quantum mechanical engineering, M.I.T. Emma Bentley – contributor David Andrews – Author of, “Why Does the Other Line Always Move Faster?” Originally aired October 17, 2016
This week, we take you behind the scenes for a look at what it really takes to capture intimacy scenes for the big and small screen. Spoiler alert: it’s definitely not what you think. Meet the Intimacy Coordinators Revolutionizing Hollywood featuring Bel Powley We kick things off with a personal story from co-host Meg McCarthy, who is also an NYU Tisch-trained actor. (She doesn’t like to brag but we do!) Meg gives us a firsthand account of what shooting her first sex scene was like on the set of the indie Save the Date, directed by Michael Mohan, which went to Sundance in 2012. Special Deep Dive: What is Intimacy Coordination and Why Does it Matter? One of the most heartening and innovative phenomena happening in our currently unfolding TimesUp era is the field of intimacy coordination. These coordinators are responsible for making film and television show sets safe for performers when it comes to the intimate work they do to play their characters. Think about it: we don’t expect actors to actually get shot or stabbed in action scenes, which is why there are stunt coordinators and stunt people, but it’s only been in recent years that similar protection and support has been applied to the performance of intimacy. We talk with two of the women helping lead the intimacy revolution in Hollywood: Alicia Rodis, the intimacy coordinator for HBO, who was first hired by the network to work on the Maggie Gyllenhaal drama The Deuce and now oversees this work for all of HBO’s programming. “You have to name that norm that's been there before you can work against it. And it's the same thing with creating better sex scenes. The patriarchal thing--then you’re aware of it, before you can turn it on its head.” - Alicia Rodis, Intimacy Coordinator for HBO Studios And we chat with Amanda Blumenthal, who coordinated the intimate scenes on the first season of another HBO show, Euphoria, the edgy, teen coming-of-age drama that has been renewed for a second season. “HBO [is] the only studio that requires intimacy coordinators on all of their projects. And it's actually something they've required for a little over two years now. So they were at the forefront of this whole movement [...] I totally thought more were going to go for it after HBO but it hasn't happened yet. But until they decide to do it I think a lot of this is going to start with performers.” - Amanda Blumenthal, Intimacy Coordinator Movies & Television Save the Date (2012) Meg’s intimate scene debut! You’ll have to watch the movie to see it… Diary of a Teenage Girl (2015) Bel Powley was 21 years old when she played the 15-year-old Minnie, a teenager growing up in 1970s San Francisco who is eager to lose her virginity. The Morning Show (2019) Claire (Bel Powley) and Yanko’s (Néstor Carbonell) relationship is an example of what it looks like when consenting adults—who don’t have professional power over one another—find love at work during the #MeToo era. The Interview “There's something about teenage girls that really scares like the patriarchy. Society wants to pretend they don't exist. And that's why Diary of a Teenage Girl was such a huge moment [...] They are growing little women with all these feelings exploding out of them and we need to talk about it. “ - Bel Powley This week, we chat with the lovely and talented British actress Bel Powley. She has played a variety of American roles in movies including the Apple+ Drama The Morning Show, King of Staten Island, White Boy Rick, and her breakout film role Diary of a Teenage Girl. She talks about the silence around sexuality she felt as a teenager growing up in London and the role earnest men can play in the #MeToo movement. Powley discusses her character Claire’s sex scene with Yanko (Néstor Carbonell) that got left on the cutting room floor of The Morning Show editing suite. Plus, we all agree on the greatness of Marielle Heller, writer, director, and actor (check her out in The Queen’s Gambit) who directed Powley in Diary of a Teenage Girl. Credits CherryPop is presented by CherryPicks. Our hosts are Beandrea July (Twitter @beandreadotcom) and Meg McCarthy (IG megjomccarthy). The show is recorded, produced and mixed by Beandrea July.
