They discuss how creative businesses can evolve and grow, focusing on the critical importance of relationship building over traditional "selling." Emily shares her journey from designer to consultant, while Hunter explains how she naturally found her way to the family business despite initially carving her own path. The conversation explores how creative business owners often struggle with business development, preferring to redesign websites or create marketing materials rather than building the personal relationships that truly drive business growth. Emily and Hunter emphasize that clients choose creative partners primarily because of relationships and trust ("building the love"), not just portfolios or pricing. They challenge common myths in the creative industry, particularly the idea that hiring salespeople is effective (it rarely works) and that business development brings immediate results (it typically takes two years from first meeting to becoming a client). The pair discusses how to help introverted creatives approach relationship building in ways that feel natural and authentic.Key takeaways Creative business owners should position themselves as business people first, designers secondEffective positioning requires identifying unique industry niches, services, and genuine differentiators"Building the love" through authentic relationships is more valuable than traditional sales approachesBusiness development is a daily habit that feeds the business engine continuouslyPatience is crucial - relationship building typically takes two years to convert contacts to clientsPrinciples/founders must do their own relationship building; salespeople rarely succeed in creative businessesCreatives should stop comparing themselves to others and focus on their unique strengthsDesigners should capture and communicate metrics and results, not just creative decisionsBeing ready for change is essential for creative businesses looking to evolveCreative business consultants should practice what they preach in their own business approach Mindful Creative: How to understand and deal with the highs and lows of creative life, career and business Paperback and Kindle > https://amzn.to/4biTwFcFree audiobook (with Audible trial) > https://geni.us/free-audiobookSigned books https://novemberuniverse.co.ukLux Coffee Co. https://luxcoffee.co.uk/ (Use: PODCAST for 15% off)November Universe https://novemberuniverse.co.uk (Use: PODCAST for 10% off)

Sparked by a message from a participant in my coaching program—“I feel like I know my authentic self, but I can't be her”—this episode explores why being true to ourselves can feel so hard, especially when fear and the desire to belong get in the way. I also share my own reflections, including the moment I realised that being liked by everyone was no longer worth the cost of self-abandonment.  From navigating rejection to celebrating small moments of alignment, this episode is a reminder that authenticity is not about being fixed or perfect, but about honoring who you are in the present—and having the courage to live that truth out loud. In this episode you will learn: Why knowing your authentic self isn't always enough and what gets in the way of expressing it The emotional cost of authenticity, and why not being liked by everyone is part of the deal The difference between seeking approval vs. cultivating inner alignment How to celebrate small moments of authenticity and build trust in yourself Why authenticity is fluid and ever-changing, not a fixed identity How to magnetise the right people—even if it means repelling others - How did you show up authentically today and how did that make you feel? You've been laid off, or someone close to you is navigating that reality right now. A lot of the first things we think to do after a layoff are wrong. In this episode, Scott and I explore what to avoid…and more importantly, where to begin anew. Key Points Most people underestimate the time it takes to mean a transition to the next, right position. Submitting tons of applications, networking everywhere, and telling everyone that you're looking feels productive, but is often either incomplete or a waste of time. Give yourself the space to grieve. Spend time with the people who care about you. This didn't happen to you, it happened for you. Whether objectively true or not, this mindset will help you be intentional about next actions. Hyperfocus your targeting by creating a master resume and also considering backdoors to opportunities. Decide when to hire help by using math – how much will expertise help speed up the process and/or help you land a higher salary? How to navigate a relationship (authentically) when your partner isn't 'witchy'

On the Secret Witch Show today, Nicole vulnerably addresses the common challenges that Secret Witches can face in romantic relationships - being our true selves when our partners are not ‘witchy'. Discussing the natural fear of judgement, shame and rejection - and how our ‘difference' can feel like we are living “secret” lives, feeling lonely and disconnected and leaving us feeling unheard and unseen - she shares how to take tender steps to empower ourselves into liberating our authenticity.  In this episode Nicole talks openly about her personal journey with childhood trauma and abusive relationships, exploring how embracing her true self helped transform her current partnership. She offers practical journaling prompts, advice on the inner work and answers listener questions on how to find alignment with partners, as well as sharing why ‘difference' is actually crucial to union.  She also guides you into cultivating an inner safety to share your vulnerability, and how to work with self-healing (and self-validation) for deeper intimacy and connection. What You'll Learn from this Episode: As ‘witches', we can often feel deeply fearful about being our authentic selves in our romantic relationship - bringing up the witch wound fear of being judged and abandoned - yet opening up to expressing ourselves doesn't always have to obliterate our lives, and we can open to it tenderly, with small steps ‘Difference' isn't a bad thing - we actually need polarity in relationships, because that's what creates union as we complement each other - so being a ‘witchy', mysterious feminine essence being in a relationship with a logical masculine essence being may not actually be quite as bad as our inner little girl imagines Being our authentic selves is vital in deepening intimacy and connection in our relationships - and even attracting soul-aligned partners - even though it will likely feel deeply vulnerable We often need to cultivate a sense of ‘inner safety' within ourselves first, welcoming our authentic ‘witch' home to ourselves first - until it's inevitable that no one can reject this part of ourselves (or if they do, we welcome this part of ourselves so deeply that this becomes okay) We can do this by beginning to do the inner work (such as working with archetypal remedies) to discover our wounding patterns and how they are contributing to us abandoning our authentic self - and by surrounding ourselves with likeminded souls until our expression starts to feel safe We don't have to jump to boldly declaring our witch status - we might start small by sharing aspects of our witch, such as loving wild wanders or enjoying full moon rituals - tender steps and deep love for the parts of us that feel unsafe is the way. Ever wondered how a casual compliment or a brief conversation could shape your career? Networking isn't always about grand gestures or polished pitches—it can be as simple as noticing someone's shoes, discussing the weather, or striking up a chat with the person standing by themselves in a crowded room. Sometimes, the smallest interactions can spark the most meaningful connections. In the latest episode of Where Brains Meet Beauty, host Jodi Katz sits down with Nancy Berger Founder of Start With a Good and Jennifer Parrott CEO of Locks & Mane for an inspiring discussion about the power of authentic relationships. Together they explore how genuine connections—built on generosity, shared stories, and a sense of community—drive success in business and beyond.Success as they reveal throughout the conversation isn't always linear. Nancy once dreamed of being a special education teacher before she found her true calling in publishing, where she helped launch the iconic ‘Allure Best of Beauty' seal. Jennifer's career journey took a few unexpected turns, from being a blackjack and poker dealer to selling door-to-door before she discovered her passion for hair extensions and helping others. Each of their stories reveals a powerful truth that discovering what doesn't align with your purpose can be just as transformative as finding what does. Whether it's Nancy's pivotal meeting with Glamour's publisher Kathy Leventhal or Jennifer's unexpected financial rescue from a Home Shopping Network order, they've learned that resilience and adaptability are essential in overcoming challenges. One of their biggest takeaways? The jobs that don't work out are just as important as the ones that do. Recognizing when something isn't the right fit can be a powerful guide toward discovering your true purpose and when financial setbacks arise, quick thinking, strong relationships, and the ability to pivot can transform potential disasters into opportunities for growth.Throughout this heartfelt episode, Jennifer and Nancy both emphasize the importance of patience and positivity, recognizing that success often takes longer than expected. The key they agree, is to keep moving forward—even when the path ahead feels uncertain.Ready to learn how genuine connections and resilience can propel you forward?

A double definition of happiness — and how to cultivate both parts. The new year gives us an opportunity to reflect on who we are and who we want to be. As we set resolutions and prepare for evolutions, this special four-part series on communication, happiness, and well-being explores practical ways to enhance our lives through better communication, deeper connections, and more meaningful choices. There's no one-size-fits-all approach to happiness, but according to Laurie Santos, everyone needs the two key components of contentment and fulfillment — or as she puts it, being happy in your life and happy with your life.“Being happy in your life [means] your life is filled with joy,” explains Santos, a Yale psychology professor and host of The Happiness Lab podcast. This felt sense of happiness — enjoying where we are, what we do, and who we're with — is essential, but it's not the only piece of the puzzle. Being happy with your life, she says, is the belief that “your life is going well. Being happy with your life gets closer to things like fulfillment and purpose.”In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Santos joins Matt Abrahams to explore how to cultivate both sides of her happiness equation, from building deeper connections with others to transforming the ways we communicate with ourselves. This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp.
