Have you ever asked yourself: "If I could talk to my younger self, what vital lessons would I share about fatherhood?" "Is my 'tough guy' exterior actually holding me back from truly connecting with my kids?" "What does it really mean to lead my family with emotional authenticity?" If these questions resonate, get ready for an unfiltered, insight-packed conversation that hits at the very heart of modern fatherhood: modeling emotional openness, prioritizing genuine connection, and reimagining what leadership truly looks like at home. Today, Larry Hagner sits across the table from his son Ethan Hagner. Their deeply touching exchange is a powerful reminder of how universal the struggles of growing up and parenting really are, driven by Larry's determination to provide a steady, affectionate home—a stark contrast to his own chaotic upbringing. Become the best husband and leader you can: www.thedadedge.com/mastermind In this unfiltered, insight-packed conversation, we dig into: Asking for Help as a Strength: Why vulnerability and reaching out for support are ultimate acts of courage, challenging the traditional "tough guy" parenting narrative. Empathy Over Solutions: Ethan shares his journey learning to be a better listener, especially in his relationship with his girlfriend, recognizing that people often want understanding and empathy more than immediate fixes. The Power of Authentic Connection: Larry and Ethan emphasize that genuine presence and open communication are direct drivers of influence in the home, making attempts to motivate or discipline kids far more effective. The "Marriage-First" Household: A candid discussion on the profound difference a strong, loving parental relationship makes in children's development and present-day family life, even if it means "grossing the kids out with love." Don't Hold It In: The crucial message to express pain, stress, and affection openly, allowing your family to see the full, real you for true psychological safety and peace. This episode offers profound wisdom and practical takeaways for any dad looking to build a legacy of emotional health and connection. Here's what research and observation highlight about emotional openness in families: Children raised in homes with high parental emotional openness report a 35% increase in emotional intelligence and resilience. Parental modeling of asking for help is correlated with a 40% higher likelihood of children seeking support when needed, reducing feelings of isolation. Families in which parents prioritize and visibly demonstrate a strong marriage report children with 25% higher levels of emotional security and social adjustment. www.thedadedge.com/alliance www.1stphorm.com/dadedge www.thedadedge.com/mastermind

Most of these chemicals were never tested for long-term safety on gut health Maltodextrin, an emulsifier found in many frozen desserts, destroys mucus-producing gut cells, leaving your intestines vulnerable to bacteria and inflammation, even without harmful microbes present Research shows emulsifiers interfere with metabolic signaling, raising your risk of insulin resistance, weight gain, and inflammation Children are especially at risk, since their microbiomes are still developing. Today we are unlocking why yelling seems to work with our kids and how to find the balance between kindness and firmness that creates sustainable, effective parenting. Some key aspects we will cover today include:When children push boundaries, they're actually seeking clarity and predictability, not testing our patience.Children are wired to test boundaries to see what happens when they do.Yelling "works" only because kids finally know you mean it, not because of the volume. When we're overly gentle without clearly set boundaries, we set ourselves up to yell.  Why? Well, it's kinda like the universe maintains a balance between kindness and firmness—falling too far into permissiveness leads to explosive firmness.Today I'll teach you the CEO approach to replace yelling at your kids, with a new way to be kind and firm at the SAME time. Replacing yelling requires learning how to mean what you say and say what you meanIf you want to understand the CEO approach and get beginning tools for better communication, check out Episode 71: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/71-3-steps-that-get-kids-to-listen/id1682538739?i=1000665256022. Join me next week where we'll be talking about how to control your anger as a parent without yelling.✨Want more?1) Use this link for a FREE 20 min clarity call with Sustainable Parenting.2) Download the FREE pdf. on getting kids to listen.3) Buy a 3 session Coaching Bundle (saving you $100) - for THREE 30-min sessions 1:1 with ME, where we get right to the heart of your challenges, and give you small, powerful shifts that make a huge difference fast.

China's cultural revolution was murderously violent and culturally devastating; millions of people, artefacts and ideas went up in smoke. So what's fuelling today's Neo-Maoist movement and nostalgia for that period? In 1966, the Chinese revolutionary leader Mao Zedong went to war against his own government. What followed was ten years of murderous violence and utter insanity, until Mao's death in 1976.Children were urged to denounce their parents, teachers were beaten to death in front of howling mobs, youths were 're-educated', the economy was ruined, and so much of the precious cultural heritage of a great, ancient society went up in smoke. The 'Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution' left such deep scars on China, that subsequent leaders have tried to bury its memory. But, still some young Chinese people — 'Neo-Moaists' — have a sense of nostalgia for the violent revolution they didn't even live through. In order to understand what's going on in China today, you need to know what happened in those strange and terrifying years, and how it affected President Xi Zinping, who had a front row seat to the terror.Further informationBombard the Headquarters is published by Black Inc.Find out more about the Conversations Live National Tour on the ABC website. This episode of Conversations explores political violence, revolution, propaganda, China, Asia, totalitarianism, Farewell my Concubine, Asia Pacific, Lenin, Marxism, Socialism, civil war, the long march, neo-Maoist movement, great leap forward, political upheaval, class warfare, status quo, drain the swamp, mass murder, infanticide, conspiracy theories, Tiananmen Square, red guards, coup, dictatorship, nostalgia.

Some topics in pediatrics are flashy — like seizures, mystery rashes and fevers. While those often make headlines, others, like pediatric nephrology, are a routine but critical part of daily practice. Understanding these bread-and-butter issues is essential to diagnosing so many patients. Protein in the urine, blood pressure creeping up or a UTI that is more than ‘just a UTI' are often signs that something may be wrong with the kidneys. In this episode, we examine those practical essentials and learn how PCPs can feel confident in managing these diagnoses. This episode was recorded on the exhibit floor of the 2025 Pediatric Academic Societies Conference in Honolulu, Hawaii. Joining us for this episode are Bradley Warady, MD, and Nathan Bines, MD, both from Children's Mercy Kansas City and the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine. Dr. Warady is the Director of the Division of Nephrology, a Professor of Pediatrics and the McLaughlin Family Endowed Chair in Nephrology. Dr. Beins is the Associate Program Director for the Pediatric Nephrology Fellowship Training Program, as well as a Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics. Some highlights from this episode include:  Understanding the core kidney issues in general pediatrics  How to identify these conditions early  The difference between benign findings and red flags  Tools for friendly language about topics that might be sensitive or embarrassing for a child  For more information on Children's Colorado, visit: childrenscolorado.org.

Dr. Mary Barbera discusses how doctor visits can be overwhelming for children with autism, but systematic desensitization can make a big difference. This simple approach uses gradual exposure and positive reinforcement to reduce fear and build cooperation—even for kids with past medical trauma. Start with pretend play, visual schedules, and breaking visits into small steps. For emergencies, prep a go-bag and summary sheet in advance. With the right tools and a little planning, you can reduce meltdowns and make medical visits more manageable.

FORBIX — THE HAIRDRESSER WITH AN ARTIST'S TOUCHIn the heart of the town of Tagliaspunta, nestled among shops of all kinds, there's a hairdresser named Forbix, for women, men, teenagers, and children — though not too little. Forbix is no ordinary hairdresser: he has the magical touch of an artist. His scissors are made of silver and, as they cut, they whisper stories. His ivory comb makes hair shine, and his hairdryer doesn't blow air — it blows dreams. At his cutting station, he becomes a magician: the scissors, guided by his hand, flutter through the hair and, touch after touch — voilà! — the result is perfect. One day, the tree standing in front of his shop said to Forbix:“You are an artist, and I'm tired of my tangled mop of leaves. I'd love a little makeover,” it sighed, “and I'd make a great advertisement for you.”The hairdresser didn't need to be asked twice: he stepped outside with his enchanted scissors.Circling the tree with the flair of a genius, after a few confident snips, he trimmed the branches and turned the dry leaves into silver confetti that the wind carried away. The tree looked more radiant and alive than it had ever been, with fresh green leaves adorning it like braided ringlets. The next morning, two children — Sara and David — playful as ever, were hopping along the sidewalk when they saw the tree, so elegant and in a good mood, its leaves joyfully whistling.Sara had curls like little summer clouds, and David's hair stuck up like a tiny hedgehog. As they came closer, they asked in unison:“Who's the artist who did all this?”The tree replied: “The hairdresser, Forbix.”“We'd love to go too! Our hair is all messy and really needs a good fix. Our moms have been saying so for quite a while now.”“Well then, you'd better listen to them. Go on, go in,” the tree encouraged them with a whisper.David went in first, tripping over the marble step, followed by Sara who smiled and waved.Forbix, ever observant, welcomed them in and, running his hands through their hair one at a time, slowly began to cut with his magical scissors. The comb gently caressed their hair, which began to shine, and with the blow-dryer, dreams swirled through the air along with whispered stories.Looking at themselves in the mirror, their faces lit up with big smiles, while Forbix, pleased in turn, gave them a wink.Sara and David happily thanked him with a bow and a wave.Out on the sidewalk, they danced in a joyful circle around the tree, on whose branches little songbirds had perched — giving a cheerful concert, along with the leaves and the children. The true magic of Forbix lies not only in the tools of his trade, which he uses with an artist's passion, but also in his ability to listen — and bring a smile.-- Written by Lucia & Marco Ciappelli

Rates of chronic illness, behavioral disorders, and neurodevelopmental challenges are rising rapidly among children, often tied to underlying gut dysfunction, nutrient deficiencies, and environmental triggers such as toxins and ultra-processed foods. Conventional treatments frequently overlook these root causes, relying instead on symptom management or medication. Functional approaches emphasize foundational lifestyle changes—clean nutrition, microbiome support, movement, sleep, and stress reduction—as powerful tools to restore health. Children are especially responsive to these changes, often experiencing rapid and dramatic improvements in behavior, mood, and physical symptoms. With education, testing, and family-centered strategies, parents can take simple, effective steps to help their children thrive. In this episode, I discuss, along with Dr. Elisa Song, Dr. Suzanne Goh, and Dr. Elizabeth Boham why a root-cause approach is just as important for children, as it is for adults. Dr. Elisa Song, MD is a Stanford-, NYU-, UCSF-trained integrative pediatrician, pediatric functional medicine expert, and mom to 2 thriving children - and she is on a mission to revolutionize the future of children's health. Dr. Song is the bestselling author of the Healthy Kids Happy Kids: An Integrative Pediatrician's Guide to Whole Child Resilience. Dr. Song created Healthy Kids Happy Kids as an online holistic pediatric resource to help practitioners and parents bridge the gap between conventional and integrative pediatrics with an evidence-based, pediatrician-backed, mom-approved approach. In her integrative pediatric practice, she's helped 1000s of kids get to the root causes of their health concerns and empowered parents to help their children thrive by integrating conventional pediatrics with functional medicine, homeopathy, acupuncture, herbal medicine, and essential oils. Dr. Song is chair of A4M's pediatric education and has lectured around the world at leading integrative and functional medicine conferences and premier parenting events. She has also been featured in hundreds of top podcasts, print and online media outlets, including the Wellness Mama podcast, BloomTV, Forbes, Healthline, MindBodyGreen, National Geographic, PopSugar, Parents, Motherly, Parade, Verywell Health, and New York Post. Dr. Suzanne Goh, co-founder and chief medical officer at Cortica, is a Rhodes Scholar and graduate of Harvard University, University of Oxford, and Harvard Medical School who has spent decades working with autistic children. Her work as a board-certified pediatric behavioral neurologist, behavioral analyst, neuroscience researcher, and author led her to create the Cortica Care Model, an innovative, whole-child approach that combines optimal medical treatment with the most effective strategies for advancing cognition, communication, and behavior. Dr. Elizabeth Boham is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Albany Medical School, and she is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner and the Medical Director of The UltraWellness Center. Dr. Boham lectures on a variety of topics, including Women's Health and Breast Cancer Prevention, insulin resistance, heart health, weight control and allergies. Have you ever asked yourself: "How do I teach my kids true grit without breaking their spirit?" "Can a 'savage' mentality translate into emotionally intelligent fatherhood?" "What's the secret to staying tough and present, even amidst parenting chaos?" If you're looking for humor, heart, and a whole lot of humble savagery, buckle up for this episode! Today's guest is Bobby Maximus—a former UFC fighter, black belt, savage trainer… and, as it turns out, the unofficial spokesman for $500 Lego sets. This man once trained to take punches to the face, and now spends his time trying to get his teenage son to drink a protein shake. Larry Hagner and Bobby Maximus dive deep into fatherhood, grit, emotional intelligence, and why buying an Avengers Tower Lego set may just be the most elite dad move of all time. Become the best husband and leader you can: https://www.thedadedge.com/mastermind In this powerful conversation, we dig into: Grit Beyond the Octagon: How the resilience and mental toughness of an elite fighter translate into everyday fatherhood and life's challenges. Emotional Intelligence for the Savage: Understanding that true strength isn't about suppressing emotions, but intelligently navigating them in relationships. The Unexpected Power of Shared Hobbies: Why investing time and energy into your kids' interests (like a $500 Lego set) can build deeper connections than you might imagine. Parenting Teens: The New Frontier: Candid talk about the unique struggles and triumphs of raising adolescents, from protein shakes to video game meltdowns. Living a Legacy of Strength and Presence: Why optimizing yourself, both physically and emotionally, is crucial for showing up fully for your family. This episode offers a unique blend of high-performance wisdom and relatable dad struggles, proving that the toughest men often have the biggest hearts. Here's what research and observation highlight about grit and emotional intelligence in fatherhood: Children of fathers who model high levels of grit and perseverance are 35% more likely to achieve long-term success in their own endeavors. Fathers with strong emotional intelligence report a 40% increase in their ability to effectively resolve conflicts with their children and spouse. Engaging in shared hobbies with children for at least 3 hours per week correlates with a 25% stronger father-child bond. www.thedadedge.com/532 www.thedadedge.com/alliance www.thedadedge.com/mastermind www.instagram.com/bobbymaximus www.youtube.com/@OfficialBobbyMaximus www.tiktok.com/@bobbymaximus
