Have you ever considered the lighter side of dark matter? Comedy has proved an unexpectedly succesful way to engage people with science - as today's guest knows first-hand.Astrophysicist Catherine Heymans is a Professor at the University of Edinburgh and the current Astronomer Royal for Scotland. She's spent her career studying dark matter and dark energy: the mysterious ingredients that make up an estimated 95% of our cosmos, but which we still know surprisingly little about. Using increasingly powerful telescopes, both on earth and in space, Catherine has spent years building detailed maps of dark matter - even to the extent of capturing rare images of this mysterious cosmic component. On top of her research achievements, she's committed to making science accessible to all; not least by taking an astronomy-themed comedy show to the Edinburgh Festival and beyond. In conversation with Professor Jim Al-Khalili, Catherine talks about her passion for sharing the joys of astrophysics - and reveals how health challenges over the last few years have forced her to readdress her career, her ambitions and even her sense of self...Presented by Jim Al-Khalili Produced by Lucy Taylor Revised for World Service by Minnie Harrop

We all know insects are important, but one CrowdScience listener worries that they don't seem to have equal billing when it comes to human love and attention. In Scotland's capital Edinburgh, listener Ruth loves to sit and listen to the birds, the bees and the hoverflies as they go about their daily chores. And it's got her wondering why bees and butterflies seem to get all the conservation efforts. What do we need to do to protect butterflies as less beautiful caterpillars, and ladybirds as less glamorous larvae? Are people even aware that insects exist in multiple stages of a lifecycle, and that around the world, insect populations are facing perilous levels of decline. Presenter Alex Lathbridge is on a mission to identify the other unsung insect heroes. Along the way we meet Dr Caitlin Johnstone and Dr Nick Balfour at the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh, who help listener Ruth find out about the lifestyles and lifecycles of hoverflies. We meet the midge that pollinates cocoa crops in Ghana, as well as Dr Tonya Lander from Oxford University and Dr Acheampong Atta-Boateng from the University of Arizona who have been studying them. And Marc Vaez-Olivera from the company Polyfly introduces us to the billions of hoverflies helping to double avocado yields in Spain. We also learn what we can all do to help keep insects in our gardens… even if that may involve sacrificing a cabbage or two. Peter Doig talks to Ben Luke about his influences—from writers to musicians, film-makers and, of course, other artists—and the cultural experiences that have shaped his life and work. Doig, who was born in Edinburgh in 1959 but grew up in Trinidad and Canada, has created a relentlessly inventive and evolving body of paintings over the past 40 years. Informed by memory, by Doig's own photographs and found images, by an intimate knowledge and interpretation of art history, by a profound response to place and architecture, and by images and moods evoking diverse cultural forms beyond visual art, his works possess a poetic and sonorous sense of feeling and atmosphere. Often realised over many years, each painting is unique rather than part of a series, even if it shares recurring iconography with other pieces. Fundamentally concerned with figuration, Doig draws on a vast range of painterly approaches from resonant stains to thick impasto, stretching his medium to its full expressive potential and into the realms of abstraction. He has said that he wants painting to be a world unto itself and perhaps no other artist of the past few decades has created such a distinctive language for achieving that aim. Indeed, so widespread is his influence that one might describe a painterly strand in recent art around the globe as Doigian. Across his career, Peter's work has been informed by a passionate engagement with music. He has said: “Music, being an invisible art form, is open to interpretation within the mind's eye, and reflections from the mind's eye are often what I'm attempting to depict in my work.” He achieves a particular tonality and ambience that evoke his aspiration to the condition of that artform, a factor emphasised in House of Music, the exhibition at the Serpentine South until 8 February 2026. He discusses several of the paintings in that show in depth, and reflects on his changing response to Trinidad, where he was based between 2002 and 2019, and his references in the paintings to the “residues of imperialism”. Among much else, he discusses the early influence of Edward Burra, his enduring fascination with Henri Matisse, his response to early graffiti art in New York, and his current fascination with Caravaggio's Beheading of St John the Baptist (1608). He talks about his friendship and collaboration with the poet Derek Walcott and the importance to his work of STUDIOFILMCLUB, the repertory cinema he founded in his Port of Spain studio with Che Lovelace. Plus, he gives insight into his life in the studio, and answers our usual questions, including the ultimate: “what is art for?”Peter Doig: House of Music, Serpentine South, London, until 8 February 2026. At the beginning of September 2025, within 48 hours, Nepal's government had been toppled, and more than 70 people had been killed, with many more injured. The trigger for all of this had been a government ban on 26 social media platforms, but the primary reasons ran much deeper. Nepal became a republic in 2008, following a decade long civil war, but since then, the promised stability and prosperity have failed to materialise. The country has been subjected to short term coalition governments, resembling a game of musical chairs between certain political parties. And it was Nepal's Gen Z, who decided to make their frustrations over the lack of opportunities, the social inequality and the existing political system known, with their digitally driven anti-corruption protests. In the aftermath, the protestors gave their approval to a new interim prime minister and demanded new elections, set for March next year.Asia is increasingly witnessing a mood for change amongst its young people, from Indonesia to Sri Lanka and last year's student-led revolution in Bangladesh. But very few protests of this nature have translated into fundamental social change. And it remains to be seen if the decision by Nepal's Gen Z, to place their trust in 73-year-old Sushila Karki as the new Interim Prime Minister, reflects their own political maturity. So, on this week's Inquiry we're asking, ‘Can Gen Z shape a new Nepal?'Contributors: Prof Jeevan Sharma, Chair of South Asia and International Development, University of Edinburgh, UK Pranaya Rana, Journalist and Writer, Kalam Weekly, Kathmandu, Nepal Prof Sreeradha Datta, International Affairs, O.P. They talk about the girl who smelled of spam and Sally's impressive performance in the film “How To Please A Woman”, but they can't avoid the elephant in the room and discuss there somewhat different memories of the break up of their relationship (and at least one of hers confuses a sketch with reality, but what is truth?) and how this impacted on their Edinburgh shows (and lives). Can they reach a place of forgiveness for their behaviour? Also Sally's side of the Princess Diana love triangle, how being in a comedy gang in the 1990s gave us all too much confidence, how she got the job in Alan Partridge, what led to her working with Mr Tumble and speculation on why Hugh Grant doesn't talk to her. Half of working dads feel nervous asking for time off to care for their children, more than 20% have been asked ‘where's your wife/partner?' when requesting flexibility and 44% say employers treat mothers more favourably in terms of flexible working. These are the findings of a new study ‘Barriers to Equal Parenting' by the charity Working Families. Nuala McGovern is joined by Elliott Rae founder of Parenting Out Loud and Penny East, chief executive of the Fawcett Society. In 2012, Agnes Wanjiru, a 21-year-old Kenyan woman and mother, was found dead in a septic tank near a British army base in central Kenya. More than a decade later, no one has been charged with her killing. Last month, a Kenyan High Court issued an arrest warrant for a British national suspected of her murder. We hear from Agnes' niece, Esther who is here in London today meeting with the Ministry of Defence calling for answers and for someone to be held responsible. Today would have been Baroness Margaret Thatcher's 100th birthday. Britain's Prime Minister for almost 12 years, she was the first woman ever to hold that position. Adored and revered by many, grudgingly respected by others, reviled by some on the left & criticised by feminists for doing little for women, can her legacy be clearly defined? To discuss Nuala is joined by Baroness Gillian Shephard who served in the ‘Iron Lady's' first government and Sarah Childs, Professor of Gender and Politics at the University of Edinburgh.Over the weekend, we heard that the Oscar-winning actress Diane Keaton died at the age of 79.
