Just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday, Rusty sits down with consultant and PlayFull Podcast host Kristine Michie for a lively conversation about the role of joy, play, and ice cream in sustaining the nonprofit workforce. Kristine shares how her lifelong roots in activism shaped her worldview, and how her consulting firm, ImpactFull, emerged with a mission to help social-change leaders weave fun, creativity, and moments of levity into the everyday grind of mission-driven work. Together, Rusty and Kristine explore why morale is so fragile in the current climate—and why nurturing hope, agency, and human connection is essential for impact.Drawing on insights from nearly 200 interviews with changemakers, Kristine describes how play reduces stress, builds community, fuels innovation, and restores the emotional stamina required for nonprofit work. She offers practical strategies for leaders and funders—such as incorporating playful tools into board development, gamifying engagement, and creating small rituals of joy that strengthen team culture. Through stories, laughter, and yes, shared ice cream, the episode highlights a simple but powerful truth: when nonprofits integrate play into their work, they replenish the spirit needed to keep going and keep changing the world.Related Episodes:Happy, Healthy Nonprofit People - with Beth KanterSocial Impact Grief: How to Mourn AND Organize in 2025 - with Meico Marquette WhitlockLinks to Resources:ImpactFull (Kristine's consulting practice)The PlayFull PodcastRusty Stahl: Defending Civil Society in a Time of Political Threats (episode on PlayFull Podcast)Durfee FoundationChangemaker CampGuest Bio:Kristine Michie is Founder of ImpactFull, Inc., creator of Provocative Joy Retreats, Changemaker Camp, and host of the PlayFull Podcast: Bringing Fun to the Serious Work of Changing the World. The episode kicks off with the hosts', touching on the ridiculously short two-day first test match in cricket and the start of the summer, which prompts nostalgic recollections of childhood ice creams, including Zac's lament over paying nearly $5 for a Calipo. In their running weeks recap, Chris reports a managed 39K week, focusing on recovery from a rolled ankle and a heat-impacted progressive long run, while Zac celebrates a strong 66K week—his highest volume since February—which included an important strength-building.This weeks run2pb guest athlete is James Cousins, a dedicated Run2PB athlete who joined in 2023 via a referral from the Inside Running Podcast, starting with Coach Sophie Fitt before moving to Coach Brady. James has been "thriving" under Brady's guidance, with the coach noting he is "very dedicated and diligent, a smart trainer who understands the purpose of workouts." This discipline has translated into serious results, including smashing his personal bests to a fantastic 1:23:25 Half Marathon and a 37:28 10K. The discussion with James begins with his Origin Story and the topics that shaped his running journey. The hosts dive into his initial spark for the sport, the significant setback of recovering from a snapped clavicle in a bike accident, and the mental and physical process of transitioning from surgery to the marathon start line. he hosts also draw a comparison between his sign-up PBs (3:17 Marathon, 1:29 Half) and his recent breakthroughs, asking him to walk listeners through what "clicked" to achieve such drastic time drops.James discusses the most significant benefits and differences he's experienced since moving to a structured coaching environment with Brady, and his philosophy when approaching a tough session, explaining what makes him a "smart trainer." Looking to the future, the hosts challenge James on whether he is currently leaning more towards the speed of the 5K/10K or the endurance challenge of the marathon as he chases the sub-3 goal. The episode concludes with a series of quick-fire questions, covering everything from his current shoe rotation and favourite race he's done so far, to his preference between Ice Cream or Gelato .With thanks to Oat Running our partner, Chris will be gifted some Oat Running Socks.Listeners of the show can get a a 15% discount using "run2pb15" at the check out. In this episode, Ben Azadi exposes the hidden toxins inside popular “healthy” ice cream brands — even those labeled organic, vegan, or keto-friendly. You'll discover: The five toxic ice cream traps that damage your gut, hormones, and metabolism. Why ingredients like seed oils, emulsifiers, and carrageenan can cause leaky gut, inflammation, and insulin resistance. How to read labels smarter so you stop falling for “natural” and “low-calorie” marketing tricks. The two ice cream brands Ben actually recommends for a clean, guilt-free treat. Why even “healthy” ice cream spikes glucose — and how a 30-minute walk after dessert can cut that spike by up to 40%. Plus, Ben answers listener questions about seed oils, moderation, and smart indulgence.

Prolific, five-time James Beard Award-winning cookbook author Dorie Greenspan is the queen of sweets, and she just released her 15th cookbook, Dorie’s Anytime Cakes. Famous for her beloved World Peace Cookies and many baking books, including one she wrote with Julia Child, it's not surprising that Dorie wants to start and end her last meal with dessert. What's wrong with eating dessert first, anyway? Rachel chats with Ayurvedic counselor Jodi Boone about the life-bettering benefits of starting your meal with sweets. And when Dorie told Rachel she ate the same exact lunch every single day for years, the first person we thought of was Donald Gorske. Gorske has eaten almost nothing but McDonald's Big Macs since 1972, putting his current Big Mac count at over 35,000. #669 How do you build a beloved, nationally-recognized ice cream brand from scratch — and then turn around and create a completely different company redefining dietary fiber in America? In this episode, host Kirsten Tyrrel sits down with Jeni Britton — founder of the iconic Jeni's Ice Creams and now founder of Floura — to talk about creativity, curiosity, and the emotional side of entrepreneurship. Jeni shares how she started with nothing but vision, passion, and a gelato machine from a local Italian market, how she bootstrapped her way from a farmer's market stand to 90 stores and 10,000 grocery doors, and why she believes emotion, intuition, and integrity are the true drivers of a lasting brand. From building a fellowship-style team to navigating growth, trust, and leadership, this conversation is packed with wisdom for founders who want to build something meaningful — and do it their own way! What we discuss with Jeni: + Starting Jeni's in a farmer's market + Vision born from scent and storytelling + Bootstrapping with no capital + Turning produce waste into fiber products + Launching Floura and “bridging the fiber gap” + Importance of emotion in business + Building a fellowship-style team + Trust and communication in leadership + Learning to step back as founder + Success driven by passion and curiosity Thank you, Jeni! Comedian Atsuko Okatsuka’s last meal, and the reason why she sometimes carries cooked scallops in her bag, trace back to her unstable, unpredictable childhood. She talks about being kidnapped by her grandmother and why a gluten-free spaghetti dinner brings her comfort, even as someone who doesn’t have a gluten sensitivity. Atsuko’s first foray into entertainment was working at an ice cream chain that made employees sing and dance for tips. Atsuko loved it, but host Rachel Belle interviews two other folks who had no idea they had to perform at their restaurant jobs, until they saw it happening on their first day. One at Chicago’s famous Wiener’s Circle and another at a now-defunct steak house chain. Atsuko is on tour now! You can also watch her standup specials on HBO and Hulu. Bobby kicks things off explaining why the Arkansas head-coach hiring odds has him officially banned from sharp objects for the near future—part cautionary tale and part comedy. Then USF head coach Alex Golesh drops by to talk ball and beyond: his Mount Rushmore of music (and why kids these days don't understand good music), what he thinks of Fayetteville, AR, during the fall, and why having a routine is so key for him. And Eddie? He’s become the Neapolitan ice cream of college sports—multiple flavors of fandom in one carton. Today he has a Belmont hat on and explains why.
