THIS TIME OF year, the burden of all the serious arguments and disagreements left over from Thanksgiving dinner melt deliciously into a far more congenial controversy, which plays out at every ice-cream shop in the land: Do you prefer a cake cone, waffle cone, or a sugar cone? If you're partial to the wafer-like texture and subtle flavor of the cake cone, especially after it's become slightly soggy with melted ice cream, you're certainly not alone. And the bold cookie flavor and crunch of a sugar cone has many fans too — although most Americans, given a choice, go for the generous size and luxuriant crispness of a waffle cone, sometimes dipped in chocolate. No matter what your preference, though — unless it's hand-rolled using homemade dough — your favorite cone is the great-great-grandchild of the first mass-produced ice cream cone that dropped out of a brand-new machine invented and fabricated in Portland, Oregon, circa 1912 — the brainchild of a creamery executive named Frederick A. Bruckman, in collaboration with his boss, George Weatherly... (Portland, Multnomah County; 1910s, 1920s). "I can't say that in 34 years I have enjoyed my life in the way that I do now. That is the shift. That's the shift post-Hoffman. It's the shift of doing this work. It's the shift of my life." Six months before Madison Utendahl arrived at the Hoffman Process, she closed her business. The immediate question that came to her in the wake of closing it was, Who am I without this job? She'd realized that her company and her work had become part of her identity. Feeling a complete disconnect from herself without this company she'd worked so hard to build, Madison realized she needed to do something different. Therapy, something she'd done a lot of, wasn't going to cut it. She needed a serious change. She turned to Hoffman. In this engaging and spirited conversation, Madison leads us through the before, during, and after periods of her Hoffman Process experience. As we listen in, we're able to glimpse not only her journey, but some of the Process journey itself as seen through Madison's eyes. One of the significant negative patterns that Madison transformed was "control," one that plagues so many of us. In her brilliant words, she shares the big Aha! she had behind the transformation of this pattern, wisdom that's true for many patterns. Madison explains, "I learned at Hoffman that control was a survival instinct. If it was a survival instinct that meant I could unlearn it. ... I learned that young Madison, to no fault of her own, developed control to deal with her childhood."  A major takeaway from Madison's Process transformation is the realization that the Universe, or whatever you want to call it, has your back. As she says, "the unlock for me, post-Hoffman, is like realizing that God, the universe, whomever, has your back." So, go enjoy your life! Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we have a first! Our guest today is a sibling of a prior guest from just a few weeks back. Our guest today is Karen Crane, the sister of Robert Crane and the daughter of Hogan's Heroes star actor Bob Crane. While you may have thought we hit all the high notes on being the child of Bob Crane in our prior episode, well, guess again. Karen has her own, very unique story to tell. Born a decade after brother Robert, Karen spoke to us about her story from her own perspective including the details of her parents' divorce, her father's ‘wandering eye' as she puts it, as well as his obsession with photography and cameras that ultimately led to his murder in 1978 when she was just 17 years old. We also spoke to Karen about what it was like dealing with her father's second family and the difficulties that entailed both while he was living and well after his death. What's more, Karen spoke to us about a book she is writing on her own life. She's one chapter away from finishing her autobiography, some ten years in the making. What once was a nice story about family life and the best things about being Bob Crane's daughter has gone to a much darker place. What started out as one thing became entirely something else once she started to examine her own emotions and the events surrounding her father's murder. Along the way we did manage to squeak in some light moments including what kind of car her dad drove, his favorite ice cream and the one thing that she and her father did together that made her feel closest to him. We also learned quite a bit about things in her life that were difficult fifty years ago and are still difficult to this day. Karen held very little back in this episode and we appreciated her honesty and trust in sharing some truly difficult moments so we could share them with all of you.
