Today, those with kidney failure have multiple treatment options like dialysis and kidney transplants; however, many aren't aware of treatments like home hemodialysis. What is home hemodialysis, and who could benefit from it? Learn all that and more on today's episode. Jennie Wilson, MSN, RN has been working in Home Dialysis for over a decade and currently oversees several centers in the New York Metro Area that provide training and care to home dialysis patients. Her interest in population health and healthy equity has led to her passion for educating patients on their dialysis modality options. She has partnered with the National Kidney Foundation on various projects to share the clinical and lifestyle benefits of home dialysis. Bell Maddux was first diagnosed with MPGN when she was fifteen years old. She went through college, got married and started her career before she became eligible for transplant. She was fortunate to receive a living donation from her father without having to be on dialysis. Then, after 10 years with her father's kidney, Bell started in-center dialysis, and switched to home-hemodialysis in 2021. Bell is optimistically awaiting “the call” for a deceased donor, but in the meantime, she stays busy with her husband raising their two children, 7 and 12. She is a Peer Mentor and Patient Advocate with the National Kidney Foundation and has an 18-year career as a digital producer for a NY advertising agency.   Additional Resources: https://www.medicare.gov/care-compare/; https://homedialysis.org/; https://www.kidney.org/atoz/content/homehemo; https://www.kidney.org/peers; https://healthunlocked.com/nkf-dialysis#utm_source=nkf_webpage&utm_medium=w   Do you have comments, questions, or suggestions? Everyone loves to talk about kidney transplant success stories but rarely do we talk about what happens if a transplant fails. On today's episode Dori Muench, a post transplant social worker, and Sue George, a kidney warrior with experience losing a transplant, are here to discuss the impact of losing a kidney and how to cope.   Dorothy Muench, LCSW is a post-transplant social worker with the Abdominal Organ transplant department with Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for the past 7 years. In this capacity, she works with numerous individuals who have received a kidney or pancreas transplant and works to provide concrete and emotional support. Before this, Dori worked in dialysis for close to 10 years and has seen and heard the effects people have while on dialysis. She works hard to advocate for people to be transplant and find living donors so they can decrease as much time on dialysis as possible. Dori lives in North Carolina with her husband, 2 daughters and golden retriever.   Sue George is a kidney patient, with 27 years of experience who started on dialysis in 1997. She received a transplant in July of 1999 but had many setbacks. In October of 2000 she lost her transplanted kidney. Sue went back on dialysis and has been ever since. She now works with NKF as a Peer Mentor and work with KCM of Lincoln as a Mentor and try to improve how dialysis is introduced into patients' lives. She feels she has a lot of understanding of dialysis and transplant to help patients deal with the emotional side of the process. Sue is married to her husband Marty of 17 years, and they have 3 wonderful grown children. They also have 1 dog and 1 cat. She works as a secretary at St John Lutheran Church.  In her free time she loves to read and garden.   Additional resources: NKF Peers   Do you have comments, questions, or suggestions? Ashley Werhun is the co-founder of Mentorly. Her first career was as a professional dancer. Today, we discuss how she learned how important mentorship was through her performing career and how she used those lessons to build Mentorly. We also discuss some of the most important traits a mentor should have and more!Episode Highlights: Ashley Werhun is the co-founder of Mentorly, an enterprise software solution to help promote, manage, and optimize inter-company mentorship systems. She felt drawn to create mentorly after a long, successful career as a professional dancer. Through touring the world with performance companies, she met many people from many backgrounds and cultures and learned life lessons from all of them. She's now turned those lessons into Mentorly in the hopes that everyone can have the same support she had. Startup companies are hard, and they seem impossible. They take nothing and turn it into something they use to help their customers. Mentorly had its struggles but found its way with the help of angel investors who have helped not only with business funding but also by mentoring, guiding, and helping Ashley and the Mentorly team along the way.Episode Links: MentorlyBlack Business and Professionals Association (BPPA)Ashley's LinkedInFollow The Digital Marketing Mentor: Website and Blog: thedmmentor.com Instagram: @thedmmentor Linkedin: @thedmmentor YouTube: @thedmmentor Interested in Digital Marketing Services, Careers, or Courses? Who was a co-founder of the Adult Congenital Heart Association? Why did the founders believe it was necessary to create an organization specifically for adults with heart defects? How were the co-founders' parents involved in setting up the ACHA as a 501(c)3?This is the first of four special episodes to be released on Sundays in Heart Month 2022. This series, Heart Dad Sunday, is hosted by Frank Jaworski -- a Heart Dad and Anna Jaworski's husband.Tony is the father of Dr. Anthony R. Cordaro, Jr., one of the original co-founders of the Adult Congenital Heart Association or ACHA. Tony was involved from the beginning of ACHA as one of the first board members helping the organization through its initial growth phases in securing its 501(c)(3) designation and assisting in the success of its first conference. After taking a leave from an active involvement for a few years, and seeing the phenomenal growth of ACHA, Tony wanted to get back involved as a Peer Mentor for the organization. Tony says he is humbled at seeing what the organization is today with its exponential growth. Most importantly, he is deeply impressed at how many lives of individuals and families that ACHA has touched and is touching today in both subtle and dramatic ways.Today we'll hear more about Tony's early days in raising a son with a congenital heart defect, an unexpected surprise with his daughter Angela, and some of the changes Tony has seen over the decades of raising a son with a congenital heart defect.Links mentioned in the program:Adult Congenital Heart Association: https://www.achaheart.org/Please visit our Social Media and Podcast pages:Apple PodcastsFacebookInstagramMeWeTwitterYouTubeWebsiteAnna's Buzzsprout Affiliate Link (we both benefit if you sign up with Buzzsprout with my link - yay!) Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/HearttoHeart)

In this episode, Jacob shares many stories from his upbringing that have led him to where he is today - running a non profit, a coaching business and a media company. Jacob shares the struggles that he faced along the way and the turning point in his life when he made a shift and didn't look back. Jacob made a list of the things that he couldn't live without - extreme sports, traveling, and helping people, and he found a way to build a life around them. This episode is packed full of inspiration. Jacob hopes to change the way people view skateboarders and after hearing this episode, you might just ponder the idea that skateboarders can do incredible work and also skate. Jacob Jenkins is a skateboarder and entrepreneur born in Charlotte, currently living in Phoenix. He moved to Arizona after backpacking around Central America for seven months and created Now Evolving Skateboarding Worldwide, a 501c3 nonprofit that focuses on building influential leaders through skateboarding while donating skateboards to foster care and feeding families in need. His inspiration came from seeing so many people around the world struggle and from the deep connection he had made with locals through the love of skateboarding. He made a commitment to himself that he would go back, build skateparks, and make the world a better place. He has donated over 100 skateboards through his nonprofit to local foster care and children in need around the world. The process is simple, when you buy a skateboard, NESW will donate one. He has also hosted the first skate competition in the Galapagos Islands, events in Panama, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Arizona. But, his proudest accomplishment has been feeding families in need, consisting of a thanksgiving food drive where volunteers get together to deliver thanksgiving feasts to at-risk families throughout the holidays.Follow Jacob on InstagramGet a skateboard = donate a skateboard

Eating disorder treatment has come a long way since the 1990s. Family-based treatment is now considered one of the most successful options — but it involves turning over complete control and care to guardians, which is often in direct conflict with a patient's desire for control. Diana and Lisa caught up with JD Ouellette, the Director of Mentorship at a new virtual eating disorder treatment startup, Equip. In her role at Equip, JD leads a team of Family and Peer Mentors who provide expertise by experience alongside medical practitioners, dietitians, and therapists in the successful Family Based Treatment (FBT) method. JD also shares her personal story of helping her daughter recover from anorexia.
