Christopher Luxon: Prime Minister on the Reserve bank's reputation following Quigley's resignation

Christopher Luxon doesn't think the Reserve Bank's reputation has suffered any long-term damage. Neil Quigley resigned as chair of the central bank on Friday night, after Nicola Willis raised concerns over its handling of Adrian Orr's resignation earlier this year. Willis has revealed to Newstalk ZB, she would have asked Quigley to resign, if he hadn't resigned of his own accord. The Prime Minister says Quigley has made the right decision. He doesn't think the current situation is a mess, but it would have been a shambles if it had carried out much longer. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Andrew Dickens: Quigley's resignation is bad for the economy

Neil Quigley marched off into the sunset at 5.49pm on Friday. Late enough for the news to miss the TV 6pm bulletin. It's an old PR trick. Leaving the shock value to dissipate over the weekend before the start of play on Monday. It was evidence to me that successive governments and the Reserve Bank have failed to respect each other or realise that even though they are independent their actions combine and affect all of New Zealand In the Covid years the Reserve bank reacted and made money essentially free. But the Labour government wanted to be seen to be doing something, so they started overspending and throwing borrowed money away. The result was a superheated economy that crashed spectacularly and spectacularly quickly So, then the Reserve Bank made money expensive again to attack the overheating. But the new Government, this time National, again wanted to be seen to be doing something so they cancelled government expenditure throwing us into a deeper economic funk than anyone had expected. In both scenarios the governments didn't seem to realise what was happening at the Reserve Bank. And the Reserve Bank was too proud to take into account the stupidity of governments. Government's need to heed the advice that they give Council's. Stick to the knitting. Their job is to do the basics. Fund Health, Education and the Police. And build us stuff to help us do business like roads and rail and ferries. Not to worry about the price of butter or the number of supermarkets. And keep the borrowing as low as is reasonable Meanwhile let the Reserve Bank worry about inflation and the big financial stuff. That's how successful governments respected the independence of the Reserve Bank and how the last two amateur governments did not. The saga also shows how political Treasury is. Their advice wavers in the wind of whoever is in power and is not to be trusted. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The resignation of the Reserve Bank chair Neil Quigley was announced by Finance Minister Nicola Willis last night as happening with "immediate effect". It came after months of close scrutiny over his handling of Adrian Orr's resignation as Governor. Quigley described Orr's resignation, in early March, as a "personal decision" but a series of revelations followed that cast doubt on that. Minister Willis declined to be interviewed on Saturday Morning but in a pre-recorded interview to RNZ last night she said "Mr Quigley chose to tend his resignation. If he had not offered his resignation, I would have asked him for it." RNZ Business Editor Gyles Beckford has the latest.

Most retention strategies are just expensive band-aids.This week I spoke with Dr. Roger Gerard, who spent 23 years as Chief Learning Officer in healthcare and has a refreshingly simple perspective on how to keep people around.Roger breaks it down to five promises that leaders need to make - and more importantly, keep. Those promises have to do with listening with respect, helping people grow, helping them be successful, competitive compensation, and having their back when things go wrong. But we also talked about the tension within the promises. For example, we're not going have someone's back when they've done something deeply unethical. We also dig into why so many organizations have created a loyalty problem. Employers expect it from employees but don't appear to it back. If you're dealing with retention issues and tired of surface-level solutions, this conversation will give you some ideas. OpenAI has launched its latest AI model, GPT-5, which boasts significant advancements over its predecessor, GPT-4.0. CEO Sam Altman likens the impact of GPT-5 to the revolutionary introduction of the first iPhone with a retina display. The new model features enhanced capabilities, including dynamic reasoning, a larger context window, and the ability to switch between standard and reasoning modes for complex queries. Despite these improvements, user feedback has been mixed, with many expressing dissatisfaction and a preference for the more personable GPT-4.0, leading OpenAI to reintroduce the older model for users who desire it.In addition to the advancements in AI, the podcast discusses the political turmoil surrounding Intel Corporation's CEO, Lip-Bu Tan. President Donald Trump has called for Tan's resignation due to his connections with Chinese technology firms, raising concerns about national security. Tan, who has only been in the role for five months, faces scrutiny as Intel deals with significant layoffs and strategic project cuts. The situation highlights the growing intersection of politics and business, particularly in the tech industry, where vendor stability is increasingly influenced by political factors. The episode also covers N-able Inc., which reported a 9% year-over-year revenue growth, prompting the company to raise its full-year guidance. N-able is shifting its customer contracts from month-to-month to annual agreements, aiming to enhance profitability and stability. The company has also released a report indicating a dramatic increase in cyberattacks targeting small and medium-sized businesses, reflecting a shift in the perception of cybersecurity risks among these organizations. This highlights the urgent need for robust cybersecurity measures in an evolving threat landscape.Lastly, the podcast addresses the operational challenges faced by managed service providers (MSPs) due to tool overload. A recent study reveals that many MSPs struggle with integrating multiple security tools, leading to alert fatigue and inefficiencies. The findings suggest that a unified cloud security platform could significantly improve data protection and response times. As the industry evolves, the need for streamlined solutions becomes increasingly critical for MSPs to effectively manage their clients' cybersecurity needs. Three things to know today 00:00 GPT-5 Launches With Bigger Context, Smarter Routing, and Mixed Reviews From Users07:32 Intel CEO Faces Presidential Resignation Demand Amid China Ties and Massive Layoffs09:54 N-able Delivers 9% Growth, Pushes Long-Term Contracts Amid Rising SMB Cyberattacks This is the Business of Tech.    Supported by:  https://cometbackup.com/?utm_source=mspradio&utm_medium=podcast&utm_campaign=sponsorship https://scalepad.com/dave/  Tell us about a newsletter!https://bit.ly/biztechnewsletter All our Sponsors: https://businessof.tech/sponsors/ Do you want the show on your podcast app or the written versions of the stories? Story of the Week (DR):Trump Demands Intel CEO's Resignation, Says He's ‘Highly CONFLICTED' AND Eric and Donald Trump Jr. to Own Millions of Shares in New U.S. Manufacturing SPAC MMESG Analyst Tom Cotton: Trump's attack, posted on Truth Social Thursday, came two days after GOP Sen. Tom Cotton flagged Tan's prior investments in Chinese companies and his previous leadership at Cadence Design Systems, which recently pleaded guilty to unlawfully selling its tech to a blacklisted military university in China.Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan (~$70M golden hello in March; max potential $400M) directly addressed employees on Thursday after Donald Trump demanded his resignation over national security concerns, saying he has the full support of the board.Tan set up a venture firm called Walden International based in San Francisco that pumped more than $5 billion into over 600 companies. More than 100 of those investments were made in China, including deals with once-obscure startups such as Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp.—today China's largest chipmaker—where he served on the board for a decade and a half.Today, the executive is still chairman of Walden International. And he's the founding managing partner at Walden Catalyst Ventures, which focuses on investments in the U.S., Europe and Israel. He also serves in that role at another venture fund, Celesta Global Capital.Tan stepped out of the venture world and joined the chip industry full-time when he became interim head of San Jose, California-based Cadence Design Systems Inc. in 2008. The executive, who had previously served on the board, went on to take the permanent CEO job the next year. He stayed in the role until 2021, when he transitioned to executive chairman, and is widely credited with restoring the company's fortunes. In late July of this year, the Department of Justice announced a plea deal that cost Cadence more than $100 million in fines. Employees at Cadence's China unit allegedly hid the name of a customer—the National University of Defense Technology—from internal compliance in order to keep supplying it. That organization had been put on the Department of Commerce's blacklist in 2015. The Chinese university was one of a group of supercomputer operators there that had conducted simulations of nuclear explosions, the DOJ said.Shares of American Eagle surge 20% after Trump calls Sydney Sweeney campaign 'hottest ad out there' AND Epstein victims are a growing political threat to TrumpThe Fall 2025 campaign, titled "Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans," centers on a deliberate pun between "jeans" and "genes.""Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color... Program admission is solely based on “merit and academic excellence,” but applicants still need Ivy League-level test scores to qualify. This includes at least a 1460 on the SAT or a 33 on the ACT, which are both above their respective 98th percentiles.According to Karp, the internship was created in direct response to the “shortcomings of university admissions.”Here's the problem: there ARE shortcomings to elite colleges, mostly that they exude exclusivism and a commodity - but it's still a pretty rich for a guy who WENT to Stanford where he met his future funder and mentor to talk about how bullshit it wasJohn Stankey and the re-rise of the Jack Welch man-directive manbabies MMIt is incredibly encouraging that 73% of our employees took the time to respond to the survey, with 79% of those respondents feeling committed and engaged with their work at AT&T. This week on Revenue Rehab, Brandi Starr is joined by Lorraine Ball, an accomplished entrepreneur and marketing leader. Together, they break down how Lorraine transformed a marketing department plagued by constant resignations and instability into a high-performing, fully retained team. They discuss Lorraine's decisive strategies, including team realignment, personalized work scheduling, and proactive leadership that delivered measurable savings and capacity gains. If you're looking for actionable ways to create aligned, resilient revenue teams, this episode is for you.  Revenue leaders who've been in the trenches share how they tackled real challenges—what worked, what didn't, and what you can apply to your own strategy. These episodes go beyond theory, breaking down real-world implementation stories with concrete examples, step-by-step insights, and measurable outcomes.  Bullet Points of Key Topics + Chapter Markers:  Topic #1: Diagnosing and Addressing Team Turnover Crisis [03:40]  Lorraine Ball shares how she inherited a department where “one person a week at least was quitting,” creating massive instability and high recruiting costs. She quickly identified the root cause as a culture treating employees as interchangeable parts. Lorraine's first step was to get to know individual team members and match roles to their strengths, directly tackling the source of ongoing resignations.  Topic #2: Implementing Flexible Work Structures for Creatives [09:29]  Recognizing that rigid schedules were a poor fit for her creative team, Lorraine sat down with groups and asked, “If you could set your working hours… tell me what works for you.” By introducing customized schedules based on team input, she increased productivity and morale while extending team coverage. Within 12 weeks, this shift played a decisive role in eliminating turnover and stabilizing departmental output.  Topic #3: Achieving Tangible Financial and Operational Gains [20:17]  Lorraine outlines clear metrics from her changes, noting, “We were probably spending about $10,000 a month on recruiting fees. So right off the bat, we were saving $100,000.” She further highlights how retention enabled the team to reduce marketing backorders from 300 to zero and freed up capacity to find new revenue opportunities, connecting people-focused change with direct business results.   Key Learning or Action Item  If you had it to do all over again, what's one thing you'd do differently? Lorraine said she would have involved her senior team leaders more in the beginning instead of tackling everything on her own. By engaging them earlier, she believes they could have solved problems and moved through challenges faster.  The Big Win  By rebuilding team structure and culture, Lorraine Ball reduced marketing department turnover from 100 percent annually to zero for 18 months, saving over $100K in recruiting costs and creating a team so efficient they had surplus capacity.  Links:  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lorraineball/   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/themtfwpodcast/   Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MTFWpodcast/   YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@MTFWPodcast   Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/stores/Lorraine-Ball/author/B0C1J55B3H   Website: https://morethanafewwords.com/   Subscribe, listen, and rate/review Revenue Rehab Podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts , Amazon Music, or iHeart Radio and find more episodes on our website RevenueRehab.live.
