Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: A few more relevant categories to think about diversity in EA, published by AmAristizabal on December 19, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. This is a Draft Amnesty Day draft. That means it's not polished, it's probably not up to my standards, the ideas are not thought out, and I haven't checked everything. I was explicitly encouraged to post something unfinished! Commenting and feedback guidelines: I'm going with the default — please be nice. But constructive feedback is appreciated; please let me know what you think is wrong. Feedback on the structure of the argument is also appreciated. Posted on draft Amnesty Day, one day late oops People who think about diversity in EA or face diversity-related issues in their work often find it helpful to find common labels and identities. It allows identifying common problems, framings and solutions. The EA Survey already identifies common categories that are useful to think about diversity, such as gender, sexual orientation, age, race, education level and financial instability. Here I expand a bit on some other terms that I find particularly helpful. Some important previous thoughts: This is based on anecdotal use of the terms instead of official definitions (people with a background in diversity studies might have better suggestions). These terms are also huge generalizations that fail to capture individual differences and the use of these terms can also harm diversity by creating “us vs them” narratives or packing people into groups that don't represent them. If terminology needs to be corrected, this post is also to invite refining these terms. Low and Middle Income Countries (LMICs) (as opposed to High Income Countries) Definition: All countries not considered to be high-income. Although there is no universally agreed-upon definition, the World Bank defines high-income countries as those with a gross national income per capita of $12,696 or more in 2020. Upper-middle, lower-middle, and low-income countries are classified as LMICs. Why this category is useful for diversity in EA: I've been surprised by how many similarities there are between LMICs, regardless of regions. This seems true outside EA, and Gapminder's dollar street project perfectly portrays this: they show with a massive collection of photos how income is the main determinant of people's daily lives, regardless of geography. LMICs meetups in EA events tend to group compatible people with very common experiences. EA is predominant in high income countries and I've found that the LMICs category is probably one of the best at capturing a lot of what people care about when they speak about diversity in EA. LMICs groups across the world share a lot in common. This guide, for example, was created by a team from India, Malaysia and Colombia and we all had relatable experiences. Examples: Usual EA framings that address topics like donations or income are unfamiliar to LMICs, such as the usual “you're the top 1%” assumption (although in relative terms this can still be true at an individual level for high income individuals in LMICs). It captures what is usually referred to as “global north” vs “global south”, which is relevant in many discussions. It might capture that distinction better, because there are some geographically southern countries that are high income (such as Australia) and northern countries that are LMICs. It captures a lot of the historical divisions between colonized and colonizer countries and what that implies: countries often have weak institutions, corruption, poverty, poor responses to emergencies, inequality and all sorts of immediate problems. We share similar questions, experiences and tradeoffs when we think about funding on the EA space. Funding in these countries has way more purchasing power than in high income countries and this has...

The digital marketing maturity race belongs to the swift.

Does it pay to be an optimist? Volatile financial markets and flaws in human psychology can cause many investors to be unduly pessimistic. Yet, remaining an optimist - and remaining invested - is the surest way to achieve the unrivalled long-term returns of the stock market. Today, we discuss why optimism about investing is not only desirable but rational. And how to spot biases and alarmist thinking that can lead to destructive behaviour. welcome to the nonlinear library, where we use text-to-speech software to convert the best writing from the rationalist and ea communities into audio. this is: EffectiveAltruismData.com: A Website for Aggregating and Visualising EA Data, published by Hamish Huggard on the effective altruism forum. There's lots of cool data floating around in EA: grant databases, survey results, growth metrics, etc. I'm a data scientist and enjoy data visualisation, so thought it would be a fun project to build a website which aggregates EA data into interactive plots. The website is now live at EffectiveAltruismData.com. Source code is available on Github. This project is still a work in progress: the data is pretty out of date and I've got lots of future work planned. But it's far enough along that I'd like some public feedback. The website is responsive and should look good on any desktop or tablet screen. If you're viewing on a phone it will probably look ok, but you may need to alternate between portrait and landscape. Here are a few screenshots: Implementation Details The website is mostly coded in Python. The main libraries I used were: Pandas for data handling. Plotly for creating the interactive plots. Dash for the web framework. I also wrote a bunch of vanilla CSS for the frontend styling. The web server is currently deployed with Heroku, which costs $7/month. I have vague ambitions to re-implement the frontend with D3.js or Chart.js. This should cut down the loading time and give me more control over how the visualisations work. Design Philosophy I aimed to follow the data visualisation principles laid out in Information Dashboard Design and Storytelling with Data. These include: Minimise the “ink-to-data” (or “pixel-to-data”) ratio to avoid distracting clutter. Encoding data in length or distance is much higher fidelity than area or angle. Avoid pie charts, stacked area plots, radar charts, violin plots. Stick to bar charts, scatter plots, and line graphs as much as possible. Don't make the reader rotate their head. Use horizontal bar charts rather than vertical ones. Minimise the total length the eye has to travel to take in all the data. Avoid legends. On line graphs, put the labels directly on the ends of the lines. Why I Did This I said earlier that this project was motivated by my fancy for data visualisation. But I do think there's a lot of scope for valuable data visualisation and data wrangling work within Effective Altruism. For example, I've found it difficult to get a sense of the scale of donations within EA. Are total donations basically Open Philanthropy plus a rounding error? Or do donations from all the little guys like me actually make a difference in the big picture? This isn't just an interesting question in itself: it also informs my life decisions. If the total donations of people in my reference class is enough to make a noticeable change to AMF funding, then I'm more likely to steadily earn-to-give on a moderately affluent career path. If my reference class is totally overwhelmed by a handful of mega-donors, then I'm more likely to drop everything and spend a year figuring out if I can contribute to AI safety. This was some of the motivation behind the first panel of EffectiveAltruismData.com. Ultimately, I'd like to have a plot which puts all the major stocks and flows of EA money on a common scale and puts my personal earning-to-give into perspective. Another example: I have a vague sense that EAs are getting more diverse over time. Is this true? Currently, answering this question would require going through all the EA survey reports, reading numbers from images of plots, and typing them into a spreadsheet. It would be nice if all the data was easily accessible from some central repository and ready for analysis. Data visualisation is a great tool for getting lots of people quickly up to speed on quantitative facts. Gapminder and Our World in Data do this to great effect. If we want EA to be an efficient ...

Episode Introduction Alexander Betts, Professor of Forced Migration and International Affairs at the University of Oxford, and Ola Rosling, CEO of Gapminder, discuss what (almost) everybody gets wrong about refugees in this episode hosted by IKEA Foundation CEO Per Heggenes.  There are a lot of misconceptions about refugees, especially around their intentions and why they leave their homes, belongings and loved ones to venture into the unknown. Do you think you know your facts about refugees? Learn more from two interesting and knowledgeable guests who shine a light on some of the issues faced by the world's 26 million refugees. Guests Bio  Ola Rosling is President and Co-Founder of Gapminder Foundation, which he founded together with his wife and his father. Since 1999, Ola has led the development of the Trendalyzer software, which was acquired by Google in 2007. At Google Ola and his team delivered the Motion Chart as part of Google Spreadsheets. As Product Manager for Google Public Data, Ola then helped democratise access to public statistics by developing the infrastructure needed to make official statistics part of Google Search results. Ola and Anna went back to Gapminder in 2011 to develop free teaching materials for a fact-based worldview. In 2014, Ola coined the term “Factfulness”, which Gapminder is now promoting to make education about Sustainable Development less ideological and more fact-based. Together with Anna and Hans, Ola wrote Factfulness, a book launched in April 2018.  Twitter handle: @OlaRosling Alexander Betts is Professor of Forced Migration and International Affairs, William Golding Senior Fellow in Politics at Brasenose College, and Associate Head of the Social Sciences Division, at the University of Oxford. Anna and the Gapminder foundation work to promote a fact-based worldview that everyone can understand. They want to help all of us move away from a dramatic worldview that is stressful, wrong and contributes to poor decision-making. “We realised people thought they knew what the world was like around them, but they were usually wrong.”... Men hur ser framtidens grönsaksdisk ut?

Most people do badly. How do you fare? Has there been a rise in anti-Donald Trump fake news since he became President of the United States? We’re familiar with accusations that right-wing fake news is being shared online, but what about fake news from the left? Also, what lures people to delve beneath the earth, peering into the dark recesses that exist underground? Under 1960-talet födde världens kvinnor i genomsnitt 5 barn. Representing data in a unique and compelling way This brief presentation by Hans Rosling revolutionized the way I understand statistical data. He gave this presentation at the TED Conference in February 2006. The TED Website explains: Rosling is professor of global health at Sweden’s Karolinska Institute, his current work focuses on dispelling common myths about the so-called developing world, which (he points out) is no longer worlds away from the west. In fact, most of the third world is on the same trajectory toward health and prosperity, and many countries are moving twice as fast as the west did. What sets Rosling apart isn’t just his apt observations of broad social and economic trends, but the stunning way he presents them. Guaranteed: You’ve never seen data presented like this. By any logic, a presentation that tracks global health and poverty trends should be, in a word: boring. But in Rosling’s hands, data sings. Trends come to life. And the big picture — usually hazy at best — snaps into sharp focus. Rosling’s presentations are grounded in solid statistics (often drawn from United Nations data), illustrated by the visualization software he developed. The animations transform development statistics into moving bubbles and flowing curves that make global trends clear, intuitive and even playful. During his legendary presentations, Rosling takes this one step farther, narrating the animations with a sportscaster’s flair. The good news is that since Google bought the rights to Professor Rosling's Gapminder software, anyone can create these animated demonstrations of their own statistical data and use them in presentations.
