Episode 29: David Ogul is my guest on this episode of Higher Education Coffee & Conversation, an extremely talented award-winning writer and editor who I have been lucky enough to work with for the better part of 17 years. David started his career as a freelance reporter working for organizations like the LA Times and Baltimore Sun. Our relationship began when David covered a few stories at MiraCosta College where I was serving as Director of Marketing & Communications at the time. David's reputation as a stellar journalist and writer is what landed him his current role as Interim Director of College & Community Relations at Grossmont College, where he works on many different projects related to communication and marketing. I learned a lot from this conversation where David and I discuss some of the challenges he has faced taking on tasks outside of his skillset as a journalist, such as buying ads and putting together strategic marketing plans. David also drops some gems on overcoming writer's block and why it's important to do thorough research before you sit down to start writing. I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did!

Accessory Dwelling Units: What are They and Who are They For? In this Living to 100 Club Podcast, we explore the topic of Accessory Dwelling Units, commonly called ADU's. Our guest for this conversation is Lisa De Jesus, a leading authority on planning, permitting, and building these secondary living units on your property. Sometimes referred to as granny flats, casitas, and even garage conversions, the “accessory” in the ADU term refers to an “accessory” to an existing home on a single or multi-family lot. Why is there a push to add ADU's to your property? Are some parts of the country seeing more of these additions? Who are the typical homeowners making this choice? When do city or county zoning laws come into play, and how does one get the proper building permits? What about costs, and what about returns on these investments? And one of the central questions, where does the resistance or pushback come from. Who is not so welcoming to this trend? Stay informed about one of the hot trends to increase housing stock and be sure to tune in. Mini Bio Lisa De Jesus is the owner of ADU Gurus LLC, located in Vista, California. Her company understands everything needed to build an Accessory Dwelling Unit on a single family parcel or a multi-family lot. Her practice offers an understanding of ADU feasibility, parameters for local government acceptance, development impact fee (DIF) waivers, financing, architectural design and construction management. She provides property owners with Structural Plans and Title 24 documentation to obtain permits to build ADUs in any local municipality. "I've always felt that art has been a way for me to survive and thrive and I just felt like it was my artistic responsibility to help people with something that meant something to me." – Steve Dilley You may not think that military personnel and the arts would go together but they do! There is a national initiative between the Depart of Defense and the National Endowment of the Arts to bring the arts to veterans. The Veterans Affair's own website says that the creative arts “helps injured and recuperating veterans improve fine motor skills, cogitative functioning, manage stress and substance abuse, cope with symptoms of PTSD, while also improving their sense of self-esteem and overall physical and mental health.” Steve Dilley M.F.A. is the director of the Veterans Art Project. He was moved after 9/11 to help Veterans, active duty, and spouses through art making. Publicly funded testing for COVID-19 in San Diego County had been reserved for people who had been referred to a testing site by a medical provider. That changed Tuesday when new state-fund testing sites opened in Escondido, Grossmont College in El Cajon and at a closed Sears in Chula Vista.Expanding tests to people without symptoms will be a way for the county to better track the spread of the virus, and the new sites together have a capacity of performing almost 800 tests daily. The state contracted with Optum, which is part of UnitedHealth Group, to find 80 locations in California for the sites, and Optum has contracted with labs to get results from samples collected. The wait for results usually is 48 to 72 hours.

Today, Chef Andres invited a special guest onto his show: Mirella Hinojosa, a chef born and raised in San Diego. She went through a culinary arts program at Grossmont College in San Diego. Her parents did not understand her passion for the industry. She worked at the race track as a chef, in a fine dining restaurant as a chef, and helped opened very high-end establishments. She watched owners fail at the restaurant business and experienced lots of highs and lows in the industry. Mirella describes her experiences in the industry as being “somewhat in between a call-girl and a whore.” She talks about how she worked in restaurants, sometimes 6 nights a week as a single mom. She went on maternity leave 3 times in five years and found it hard to re-enter the industry every time she left. She finally decided that she just couldn’t do it. The hours were too crazy. She ended up taking a few years off from work so she could raise her kids but became increasingly depressed because she missed her work. Eventually she went back to work, but the pay was not high enough. She was unhappy because she was working for someone else … the industry was getting younger and she was getting older, and the costs were not outweighing the work.Chef Andres experienced these same feelings of frustration as he worked to care for his growing family. Now, Mirella has taken a year off from work now to regroup. The industry has taken too much from her. She is hungry for the industry but not the stress and the low pay that comes with it. Mirella is looking to become a solopreneur and go into business for herself. Does Mirella sound like you? Are you the main breadwinner in your household and all you do is work, but the money is never enough? Are you fearful of failure? Do you lack self-confidence? Well, you are not alone. Normally, the County Board of Education race isn’t one that makes it into headlines. But this year, four of the five spots on the board are up for grabs. And things are heating up. The folks elected to the County Board of Education wield some power. They do things like approve the San Diego Office of Education‘s annual budget, select and choose the very powerful county superintendent. The board also serves as the appeals board for charter schools that have been denied the right to open by a district in San Diego County. In this week’s podcast, co-hosts Scott Lewis and Laura Kohn tried to put on a debate between District 1 incumbent Gregg Robinson and his challenger, Mark Powell. District 1 represents most of the city of San Diego on the board. Only Robinson accepted the opportunity to debate. But Lewis and Kohn got Powell on the phone after to ask why he wouldn’t face off with Robinson. One hot topic in the race is charter schools and whether the candidates would support more of them in San Diego. “I’m sure there are really good charter schools and there’s really bad charter schools,” said Powell. “I would give a fair evaluation if, in fact, an appeal does come to the county board.” Robinson, a professor of sociology at Grossmont College, says he, too, supports charter schools, but only when they’re effective. “Charter schools have been very helpful with low-income students in inner-city areas,” he said. “So I support them in those kind of circumstances if they’re doing the job they’re really designed for, but I’m not a rubber-stamp for charter schools.” Number of the Week 1,600: The number of at-risk students currently enrolled in San Diego County Office of Education schools. About 12,000 at-risk students cycle through County Office of Education schools over the course of the school year. We also have a Number of the Week correction. In our May 5 episode, we said 75 percent of middle and high school students are long-term English-learners. The correct number is 75 percent of middle and high school English-learners are in long-term programs. What’s Working John Spiegel, science coordinator at the San Diego County Office of Education: County schools are beginning to adopt dramatically different standards for teaching science. To help make the transition, Spiegel and his staff have provided professional development opportunities, online resources and more to teachers and schools. For more on this, listen to our March 31 interview with Trish Williams. Got thoughts, opinions or experiences with this? In this episode of Creative Photoshop we go into a different direction. For several years I have taught a class called Polaroid Creativity: Analog Input/Digital Output. Most recently I offered this class at Grossmont College in El Cajon, CA in conjunction with the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego. It begins by making Polaroid Image Transfers and Emulsion Lifts with DayLab Printers and Copy System units. Students experiment with a variety of images and test the process. In classes in bygone years that would be the extent of our experiments. But now with scanners, printers, and most of all Photoshop these Polaroid materials can be enhanced, retouched, and enlarged, greatly expanding the artist’s expression. In this podcast we explore the Epson driver for scanning, discuss scanner settings and bring an Image transfer and Emulsion Lift into Photoshop for enhancement. We cover techniques for retouching; cleaning up borders, adding noise to enhance enlargement and adjustment layers to fine tune and correct our input. In our next episode we will explore some creative techniques combining these images with other sources and discuss output options. I hope you enjoy this episode. Creative Photoshop has now passed the 300,000 download plateau. I thank all of you who have been listeners. As always, I would love to hear from you with comments or suggestions.
