“Top of the morning to ya,” says friend and boyfriend of co-hosts and siblings Brian and Kerry. We're here on Outlook this week with visiting guest hosts Barry and his guide dog Oyster, fresh from their journey all the way from Ireland. From acquiring a pet passport to a fit-to-fly letter, Barry shares with us the process for travel with a guide dog and both of them are with us for the next few months on air. Alongside talk of travel with a guide dog, we touch on last week's Canadian federal budget announcement about the proposed Canada Disability Benefit, long promised by the Liberal government, but now the news is out that what they are offering is far less than was expected and what would put people with disabilities above the poverty line. So now Canadians with disabilities are not happy and not having it, speaking up where possible and we here are joining the chorus of voices, in a marginalised group often overlooked. In the second part of the show, we speak with Rebecca Singh of Superior Description Services, who we've had on the show last year to learn about what Superior Description does and since then what co-host Kerry has been working on as accessibility consultant. This time Rebecca is back to share with us all about next month's Junior Festival, for children five to twelve, on the campus of the Harbour Front Centre in Toronto. Junior is an arts and creativity festival for young people, running during the weekend of May 18th to the 20th. Sunday, May 19th is set aside as Enhanced Accessibility Day for children with disabilities, blindness and all kinds. There will be offerings such as touch tours, sighted guides if needed, and plenty of audio description available on site and online at the Harbourfront Centre website, described by Rebecca and reviewed by Kerry as consultant. Singh also shares with us another upcoming arts and creativity event she's working on, including podcasts as supplements to the in-person events, this June in the GTA and around Toronto, known as Luminato. Hot Docs is struggling to survive and other major festivals like Shaw are facing record deficits.Meanwhile, government help for arts institutions during the pandemic era is all but gone, while crowds have still not returned to their pre-pandemic levels. Devyani Saltzman was born into the arts and culture world, the daughter of two filmmakers—one Jewish, one Indian. Raised on production sets, she went on to write dozens of articles for newspapers and magazines, become the founding curator at Toronto's Luminato festival and work at numerous arts institutions, including the Art Gallery of Ontario, where she was the director of public programming from 2018 to 2021. Her current goal is to change the behind-the-scenes makeup of the arts world. Despite how diverse the industry seems from audiences' perspectives, she says, boards are still largely white and many institutions run in an old-fashioned, top-down way. Even when people of colour are included, it's easy to feel like a token gesture. In this episode of Rivkush, The CJN's podcast featuring Jews of colour, Saltzman sits down with Rivkush for an in-depth conversation about her career, the state of the arts industry and how things can change for the better. Melati Suryodarmo, (b. 1969, Solo, Indonesia) graduated from the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunscheweig, Germany under the tutelage of Marina Abramović and Anzu Furukawa with a Meisterschüler qualification in Performance Art. Her practice is informed by Butoh, dance and history, among others. Her work is the result of ongoing research in the movements of the body and its relationship to the self and the world. These are enshrined in photography, translated into choreographed dances, enacted in video or executed in live performances. Suryodarmo is interested in the psychological and physical agitations that may be from the self or the world but somehow result in lasting change the individual. This belief in change or growth through bodily action belies her early induction in meditation, which she continues to practice. The body is the home for memories and the self, rather than the individual itself, and the body's system. The way the body translates internal and external ideas enriches the attitude and thoughts of the self. Meeting Furukawa, an accomplished Butoh practitioner, had opened her eyes on the expressive qualities of the body, a form of communication that transcends verbal language. This experience has motivated her lifelong studies into Butoh and other artistic forms concerned with the human body. As a trained performance artist, presence is integral to the accomplishment of Suryodarmo's work in all mediums. The senses picks up non-verbal inputs and receive them as communication of intent, emotion, energy or identity. These non-verbal inputs open the door to sensitive and individual perception and the creation of presence. However, everyone processes these inputs differently and interpret them differently based on their unique consciousness. By compiling, extracting, conceptualising and translating some of these factors of presence that she recognises into her work, she intends to tease open the fluid border between the body and its environment. These movements are understood through the metaphor of poets, who similarly assembles words and spaces to create their poetry. Suryodarmo draws inspiration from her real experiences in the world. The path of history informs her perception of the everyday and the now. Her works often reflect the process that lead to current events, be it political, global or highly personal. In her abstracted gestures and poetical acts, the presence of each work is brought to a concentrated level of intensity. In abstracting these acts from their common context, they are made to correspond with new associations and sometimes identify radically with different meanings. The works' abstract narrative throws the spotlight on the audience's bodily response. This often results in a level of factual absurdity in the work, which is acknowledged and welcome. I try to understand thelanguage that are not spoken, and opens the door of perceptions. Talkingabout politics, society or psychology makes no sense to me if the nerves are not able todigest the information. Luminato Festival Toronto is an international arts festival dedicated to performance, media and visual arts, and programming that cuts across traditional artform boundaries. Luminato works closely with Canadian artists to support the development and creation of distinctive new work as well as presenting today’s most exciting artists from around the world. Naomi and Dave chat about the NEW reality once COVID-19 hit where Luminato made the difficult decision to create a version of the Festival on an on-line Digital Platform so that the event could still happen and have a presence in 2020. Police and Transport Canada are investigating after a mysterious green laser struck an ORNGE air ambulance helicopter earlier this month. The husband of the woman who was Ontario's fifth confirmed coronavirus case, has also tested positive for COVID-19. Plus, the R.C. Mitchell has become an influencer in the Toronto MusicTheatre scene and has been quite successful in a medium where many theatre companies don’t make it past their first season and I have been dying to have a conversation to hear his thoughts on creativity, entrepreneurship and the place of musical theatre in today's ever-shifting arts landscape. WISDOM: When I asked Mitchell what advice he would give someone who is thinking of starting a theatre company he said, “don’t”, with a laugh and continued to say, if you feel you must go through with it then find the Gap. How are you going to differentiate yourself from every theatre company out there? Do you need to do a show or become a theatre company because that is a totally different undertaking. Over fourteen years, The Musical Stage Company (previously Acting Up Stage Company) productions have been recognized with 61 Dora Award nominations, 11 Dora Awards and 12 Toronto Theatre Critics’ Awards and programming partnerships have been built with Mirvish, Canadian Stage, AGO, TIFF, Massey Hall, Obsidian Theatre Company, and the Regent Park School of Music amongst others.  Outside of The Musical Stage Company, Mitchell was the Associate Producer for the inaugural six years of Luminato, producing over 100 productions for one-million attendees annually. Mitchell has twice been the Creative Producer for the Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize as well as the producer of the Dora Awards. He organized four years of It’s Always Something, working with a team that raised over $500,000 annually for Gilda’s Club Greater Toronto. Mitchell is active on committees that serve the arts community. He is an advisor to the Metcalf Foundation for its Creative Strategies Incubator program, a member of Sheridan College’s Performing Arts Committee, a member of the Dora Eligibility Committee, and a member of the Advisory Committee of the Canadian Musical Theatre Writers Collective. After a successful run at the Hamilton Fringe, “FAITH” will be performed in the Chapel of St. Luke’s United Church. “FAITH” follows the coming of age a troubled teenager and her complicated relationships with God, her father and the minister at the church she no longer attends. Written by Ben Hayward, directed by Brandon Gillespie, and featuring Lindsey Middleton and Ben Hayward, “FAITH” explores issues of morality, authority, love and finding meaning.Lindsey Middleton: Lindsey Middleton hails from the teeny town of Ridgeway, Ontario. Lindsey is best known for playing Vanessa on the internationally award winning, Toronto based web series, Out With Dad. Lindsey also co-produced her own spin off series called Vanessa’s Story and recently won the 2015 IAWTV Award for Best Female Performance in a Drama for her role. Susan Morris is a condominium developer in Portland, Maine and Principal of NewHeight Group, a firm specializing in providing marketing, branding and business strategy to organizations developing new products and services, or repositioning existing ones. Susan is a Maine Angel and is actively engaged in Maine Startup and Create Week, Women Standing Together, TopGun and the House of Genius. She has built and exited from several businesses. Prior to having her own businesses, Susan worked for Marriott International for 13 years. Susan is co-author of a college textbook, Hospitality Sales: A Marketing Approach and serves as a speaker, adjunct professor and facilitator. Playing Small Moment During her Marriott career, Susan was the account manager for very large accounts, handling all aspects of their development and strategies. The man who replaced her when she relocated to a new position packaged up her work, claiming it as his own, and teaching presentations about it all throughout Marriott. Looking back, she viewed her work as not fully complete and realized that a lot of women tend to do the same. The Wake Up Call There were two instances during her career with Marriott where Susan was up for a job against men, where she was the more qualified candidate that didn’t get the job. When Susan inquired why she was not chosen for the job, her boss informed her that the man was married and had two kids to put through college. Susan realized as you go higher in a company, there tends to be more people who think the same and they don’t like it when you challenge those thoughts. Style of Leadership Susan believes in rallying people to believe in her vision and see what their part is in that vision. She is an exceedingly verbal person and quite proactive in throwing out ideas, recognizing that it gives people a chance to react. Susan prides herself on being able to change her mind and be convinced to do so. What Are You Excited About? Susan is excited about a new condominium, Luminato, with a new theme of living light. This condominium will bring about new concepts of living and the idea that if you live in a bright space, you can live in a smaller space. They will be including new amenities, such as a guest room you would see in a hotel and a community room to do your work or hang out in. Something else that excites Susan is that there are more female buyers than male buyers now. Leadership Practice Susan is full of curiosity about the world and the people she gets to interact with. This special The Bellows episode features carpenter Kevin Hutson, our moderator, joining writer/director Kat Sandler, technical director Dean Johnson, independent producer Aislinn Rose, technician and stage manager Pip Bradford, and designer and technician Rebecca Vandevelde discussing how to work with your friends while remaining professional. It was recorded live at Theatre Passe Muraille on January 18th. The first 10 minutes of the introductions was lost because SOMEone forgot to hit record: it happens. This audio starts with with Rebecca Vandevelde introducing herself. KEVIN HUTSON Kevin is the head carpenter at The Tarragon Theatre in Toronto and one of the founders of The Bellows. Kevin has also performed as a production manager, technical director, lighting designer and general technician in Toronto for may years. DEAN JOHNSON A technician and technical director in Toronto. KAT SANDLER Kat is a writer/actor/director working in Toronto. She is the Artistic Director of Theatre Brouhaha, and has staged six or her original plays; LOVESEXMONEY (Next Stage Festival), Help Yourself (Best of Fringe, winner of the Fringe New Play Contest), Delicacy (Summerworks), Rock (Storefront Theatre), We Are the Bomb (Toronto Fringe, Sucker (Storefront Theatre) and directed Twenty-Seven Wagons Full of Cotton, and The Unseen Hand (Playwrights Project). As an actor she has appeared onstage with Theatre Gargantua in the world premieres of FiBBer and Imprints. She is a graduate of Queen’s University. AISLINN ROSE Aislinn is an independent producer, theatre maker, member of the Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts’ Board of Directors, and Co-Chair of TAPA’s Indie Caucus. She recently joined the producing team for Luminato’s 2013 festival as Associate Producer, and produced the festival’s L’Allegro by the Mark Morris Dance Group, Feng Yi Ting directed by Atom Egoyan, and Ronnie Burkett’s The Daisy Theatre. This year she will be guest curating Harbourfront Centre’s HATCH 2014 season along with her Praxis Theatre colleague, Michael Wheeler. As the Artistic Producer of Praxis Theatre & Co-Editor of praxistheatre.com, she led the Open Source Theatre Project for Section 98 at Harbourfront Centre, created the experimental Dungeons & Dragons (not) The Musical, was Artistic Producer of You Should Have Stayed Home, and Producer for Jesus Chrysler in Association with Theatre Passe Muraille. She will be producing their upcoming cross Canada tour of You Should Have Stayed Home in Whitehorse, Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa. She and Michael Wheeler were named Theatre VIPs for 2012 by Toronto paper, The Grid, after having been named “People to watch” that year by Torontoist. Last year she produced Aluna Theatre’s inaugural PANAMERICAN ROUTES Festival of Theatre for Human Rights, and was Co-Producer with Fides Krucker on the electroacoustic opera Julie Sits Waiting (nominated for 5 Dora Awards including Outstanding Production – Opera/Musical). In this "What Is?" edition of "Live from the Library" Julie Hennrikus interviews Artistic Director Sherrie Johnson and Associate Curator Georgia Lyman of Outside the Box. The conversation started with a discussion about "curation" of festivals, and moved on to a bigger conversation about this summer's festival. Bios: Sherrie Johnson: Artistic Director Sherrie Johnson has developed an international reputation as an innovative and accomplished curator, artistic director and producer of critically acclaimed and award-winning, theatre, dance, film and performing arts festivals.  Sherrie comes to Outside The Box, after six years with the renowned PuSh International Performing Arts Festival, in Vancouver, Canada. She was Senior Curator at PuSh for the last four years. She has more than 20 years of experience presenting, commissioning, producing, co-producing, and touring live performance, including working as a producer for Thomas + Guinevere’s “The Encampment,” a public art installation that had its premiere in June 2012 at Luminato’s Festival of Arts + Creativity. Sherrie previously was the Pitch Producer for the Under the Radar Symposium as part of New York’s Under the Radar showcase and was Pitch Curator of Caravan, New English Performance that is presented as part of the Brighton Festival in England. Sherrie was the Touring Liaison and Curator of the Magnetic North Theatre Festival in Canada in 2006 and 2007. She was the Producer of Canadian content for the International Network for Contemporary Arts (IETM) in 2007, a membership organization headquartered in Brussels, Belgium. She was the Canadian Producer of Celebrate Scotland; the Co-Founder, Producer, Co-Artistic Director of the Six Stages Festival in Toronto, Canada; and a Production Assistant for the du Maurier Arts World Stage Festival. She received a bachelor of science degree in criminology and theatre and a master of science degree in communications from Indiana State University and studied at the University of Toronto’s Rotman Executive Program. Sherrie was a recipient of the John Hobday Award for outstanding achievement in the field of arts management from the Canada Council for the Arts in the first year the award was given. A Chicago native, Sherrie and her family reside in downtown Boston. Georgia Lyman: Associate Curator Georgia Lyman is an actor and producer working in Boston.  She is currently the Associate Curator for the Outside the Box festival.  Georgia was a founding member of Orfeo Group, which won the Eliot Norton award for Outstanding Fringe Production three times in their 5 year career. She has performed with the Lyric Stage, New Rep, Speakeasy, Stoneham, Publick Theater, Actors Shakespeare Project and Orfeo Group. She was nearly an internet sensation twice with the web series Snarkipedia and Serial Huntress. TV and film credits include The Makeover, Brotherhood, Law & Order:SVU, The Town, and the upcoming films RIPD and Larry David's Clear History.  She is currently nominated for an IRNE award for her solo performance in Chesapeake.

The Empire Club of Canada Presents: Piers Handling, Director and Chief Executive Officer, TIFF With TIFF Takes on the World Piers Handling is the Director and Chief Executive Officer of TIFF. He has held this position since 1994, responsible for leading both the operational and artistic growth of the organization. TIFF has a $33 million annual operating budget and employs more than 150 full time staff. For the last four years, TIFF has been named one of the Greater Toronto Area's Top Employers. Under Handling's direction, the organization has grown to become an internationally institution. In 2010 TIFF opened its own permanent home which presents daily programming. TIFF Bell Lightbox, houses five cinemas, two exhibition galleries, and educational and learning studios. He led the $196 million fundraising campaign. Handling has curated numerous film retrospectives and presented programmes of Canadian cinema at The Sundance Film Festival, the British Film Institute, the Havana Film Festival and sat on festival juries including Cannes, Tokyo, Rotterdam, San Sebastian, Torino, and Istanbul. Prior to joining the Toronto International Film Festival in 1982, Handling began his career at the Canadian Film Institute, ultimately becoming Deputy Director. After leaving the CFI, he taught Canadian cinema at Carleton University in Ottawa and Queen's University in Kingston. He has published extensively on Canadian cinema and edited numerous books. Handling has been honoured with the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres, France's highest cultural insignia. In 2003, he was named CEO of the Year by the Canadian Public Relations Society. One of the great things about the new TIFF Bell Lightbox is that it’s not just a movie theatre. Well, it is a movie theatre. But it’s not only that. You know? TIFF could have opted to just run limited engagements and special presentations out of their new digs, but instead, the folks at the creative helm of the Lightbox seem determined to expand the menu of cinema-related goings-on in the city. In keeping with that mandate, September 2010 the Lightbox opens its hypermodern doors to venerable Toronto post-rockers Do Make Say Think, who will be performing a live, partially improvised soundtrack for Eric von Stroheim’s silent era classic Greed. With a curious and convoluted production history, von Stroheim’s film was kind of like the Dune of early Hollywood: an exorbitantly budgeted epic that was rumoured to once exist in a whopping ten hour cut. Detailing the corrupting influence of money (it never sleeps, you know) after a woman (ZaSu Pitts) wins the lottery, Greed remains one of the more hugely ambitious productions Hollywood has ever churned out. And according to Lightbox artistic director Noah Cowan, the film was a perfect match for Do Make Say Think’s experimental rock music. “There’s something about its social consciousness and artistic inventiveness that we thought connected well with this group of Toronto musicians,” says Cowan of the pairing. “It works really well with musicians who improvise. There’s something sort of ephemeral to what constitutes story in a lot of silent era films. I think it allows for a greater reflection by artistic collaborators.” Do Make Say Think are no strangers to coupling their music with a film screening. Indeed, it was their live score for the 1919 German horror film Tales of the Uncanny (performed at Yonge-Dundas Square as part of Luminato in 2009) that informed the Lightbox’s decision to organize this week’s Greed performance. “These guys have expressed a real enthusiasm for engaging in cross-media exploration,” says Cowan. “We want to support that in Toronto. Not just at TIFF Bell Lightbox, but as a larger part of the city’s cultural fabric. This seems like a great vehicle for these sorts of hybrid events.” As Cowan suggests, the interstitial place a performance like this occupies also broadens aesthetic boundaries. Especially for a film like Greed, which has existed piecemeal in different cuts of different lengths over the years, it’s tricky to get a bead on precisely what constitutes the film. “The beginnings of cinema are starting to feel like today’s cinema, where you have all these director’s cuts and innumerable versions of films,” says Cowan. “This was the norm back in the day, where theatres would chop off bits of films. Different versions would be circulated by the studio for different marketplaces. Directors would tear their hair out, but it meant that an audience would have a general sense of what a film was, as opposed to an idea of it tied to a specific running time.” So whereas playing over a classic Bernard Herrmann score to a film like Vertigo or Taxi Driver may seem like cinematic sacrilege, a sin on par with George Lucas and Steven Speilberg’s much-maligned fiddling with their classic films, Do Make Say Think’s live score for Greed functions to tie together a film whose production and screening history was far more amorphous. The accompanying concert provides not just a compliment to the event, but the event itself. It’s something that transgresses time (setting a classic silent film to contemporary instrumental rock music) as well as the boundaries of media. And it’s precisely the kind of thing we’re happy to have the Lightbox around to host.
