Summary: As we return to our church building for the first time in more than 17 months, we ponder the question: Why do we worship? Our new hymnal and worship resource, Voices Together, guides us through some of the foundational responses to that question. Firstly, we worship in order to be gathered as community. Summoned by the God who made us, we come home to God and to one another, finding (AND extending) belonging, welcome, transformation, liberation. However imperfectly: Welcome home, church…!Series: Summer-Ordinary Time 2021ResourcesScripture: Isaiah 2.3-4, Voices Together 13Photo: by Kathryn Smith Derksen, in our worship August 15, 2021

Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour
The famous Halachic principle of "Tashlumin" allows a person to make up a missed Amida prayer if the prayer was missed inadvertently. For example, if a person forgot to recite the Shaharit prayer, he recites an extra Amida at Minha to make up for the missed prayer. Likewise, if a person forgot to recite Minha, he recites an extra Amida at Arbit, and an inadvertently missed Arbit prayer is made up the next morning, during Shaharit.Does this apply to Shema, as well? If, for example, a person fell asleep early one night before reciting Arbit, and he thus missed both Shema and the Amida, should he recite an extra Shema the next morning (in addition to an extra Amida) to make up the missed Shema recitation?Although this might initially sound like a peculiar question, this issue is actually subject to debate among the Rishonim (Medieval Halachic authorities). The Shulhan Aruch, in Orah Haim (58:7; listen to audio recording for precise citation), cites two different views. The first view maintains that one can, in fact, make up a missed Shema recitation. According to this view, somebody who forgot to recite Shema at night should recite an additional Shema the following morning, after the Amida during Shaharit, and a person who forgot to recite Shema in the morning should recite an additional Shema that night, after Arbit. This was the view of a number of prominent Rishonim (the Roke’ah, Orhot Haim and Re’avya). The second view cited by the Shulhan Aruch, which is the majority opinion, maintains that the concept of "Tashlumin" applies only to the Amida prayer, and not to Shema. The Amida prayer is an appeal for divine compassion, and Halacha allows a person who missed one prayer to bring his appeal to the Almighty on a different occasion to make up for the missed prayer. Beseeching God is not something which is inherently restricted to one time frame or another, and so a person who missed a prayer has the opportunity to make it up. The Shema obligation, however, is a specific requirement that applies "when you lie down and when you arise"; we bear an obligation to recite the Shema each morning and each evening. If a person misses the evening obligation, then, he cannot make it up the next morning, since the obligation is inherently limited to the evening hours. The Hid"a (Rav Haim Yosef David Azulai, 1724-1806) follows the second opinion, which does not allow for making up a missed recitation of Shema, and this is, indeed, the accepted Halacha. The Hid"a applies to this case the verse in Kohelet (1:15), "Me’uvat Lo Yuchal Litkon" – "Something distorted cannot be fixed." Once a person missed the evening or morning Shema recitation, there is no possibility of rectifying the mistake and making up the missed recitation.Summary: As opposed to the Amida prayer, which one can make up in a case where he inadvertently missed a prayer, there is no possibility of making up a missed Shema recitation.

Summary: As we turn our thoughts to the year ahead, wouldn’t it be great if Jesus came to you and said, “This is what I want you to concentrate on most in 2021. In the year ahead, this is the matter of greatest importance for you.” I think most of us getting this podcast or blog would listen very carefully to what Jesus said, and immediately begin forming our plan to reach this objective that The Master says is of greatest importance. But what if Jesus has already told us that? This episode takes a fresh look at how we actually apply what Jesus taught was to be the priority of his followers as they went about living their everyday lives.Resource to stay focused on your mission: Here is the link to a FOCUS Notebook that has biblical insights for every aspect of your mission. Merry Christmas my friends!Sometimes we forget that we're celebrating a birthday on Christmas... Jesus's birthday! And, it's customary to give someone a gift on their birthday. But what do you give the Man who LITERALLY has everything? We'll talk about that today.Watch on YouTube here. Summary:-As far as I can tell, Jesus mainly asked for one thing: If ye love me, keep my commandments (John 14:15)-The 2 great commandments are “love God” and “love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:37-39)-So, if we want to give Jesus a great gift, it will be a gift of loving God, ourselves, or others-For me personally, I’ll be focusing on the gift of serving the people around me with joy instead of comparing and seeking the spotlight-I’ll remember that the greatest among you shall be the servant (Matthew 23:11)MikeP.S. The Strong Man System opens up next week. I’m looking forward to having those who are ready join us in becoming stronger men, husbands, fathers and leaders in the world. See more details here.
Summary As we draw the year to a close for the Leadership Today podcast, we pause and take a look back over the five most popular episodes based on downloads. Transcript Hello and welcome to episode 104 of the Leadership Today podcast where each week we bring research to life in your leadership. What a year, hey? A one-in-a-hundred year pandemic sent us all scrambling to figure out how to lead effectively through a truly global crisis. Nearly every organisation around the world ended up with the majority of their people working from home. We grappled with Zoom meetings, lockdowns, uncertainty and confusion. And as we draw the 2020 to a close for the Leadership Today podcast, we pause and take a look back over the five most popular episodes based on downloads. I think they provide an insight into what leaders have been focusing on, and what has been the most helpful. Number 5. Way back in mid-February in episode 66, we explored A Leader’s Role in Removing Frustrations. We learnt that frustrations aren’t just bad for the individual, but can increase negative workplace behaviours. A key role for leaders is to help people to remove frustrations. We do that by accepting frustrations are normal, and recognising that they can always be reduced either at the cause or point of impact. While our impulse might be to avoid talking about frustrations, we are far better off encouraging people to raise them, provided we take a continuous improvement focus. Number 4. At the start of March we discussed Five Key Leadership Challenges for 2020 and Beyond. I highlighted a reflection deficit, flatlining trust, internal competition, reluctant leaders and transactional engagement as emerging issues. It is also when I introduced the six daily practices leaders can undertake to engage and get the best out of their people. That turned into our most popular online workshop for the year - The Six Daily Practices of Remote Leadership. Check out episode 69 for more details, or you can even complete our Six Daily Practices of Remote Leadership course as part of a free 30-day trial for Leadership Today On-Demand. Links are in the show notes. Number 3. While I may not have seen the pandemic coming in early 2020, I did have a great episode back at the start of February on The Four Core Skills for Leading in a Crisis. Episode 65 drew on research around crisis management to show the importance of identifying, acting, communicating and reviewing when it comes to a crisis. The research reminded me of the importance of identifying what we have learned once the crisis subsides. Perhaps that’s a good thing to keep in mind as we progress into 2021. Number 2. In July we explored Ten Great Questions Leaders Ask. Being a great leader isn’t about having all the answers - it’s often about asking the right questions. And research shows that asking questions helps build both liking and learning through connections and trust. Take a look at episode 84 for a list of questions you will find helpful in your leadership. And at Number 1 it’s probably not a surprise that our most popular episode was Ten Tips for Leading Others through the Coronavirus Pandemic. Episode 70 came on on 14th March, just as the virus was really taking hold globally. My tips were to keep informed and prepared, turn up each day, provide as much clarity as you can, remain calm, demonstrate genuine interest in others, provide meaningful work, check in regularly via video, invite others to connect, don’t miss the opportunities and don’t do it alone. It was pretty good advice, and worth reviewing. The only other thing I would add with the benefit of hindsight is to remember to check that you’re not on mute. So that was our five most popular episodes of 2020. I will be hosting some episode replays through the remainder for December and into January 2021. It has been a privilege to share over 40 new episodes with you this year. When I started this podcast back in July 2018 I had no idea just how helpful it would be in formulating my thinking around leadership by incorporating the latest research. A big thanks to our researcher Lauren Staveley who has really helped lift the level of the podcast and the rest of the work that we do here at Leadership Today. We now have a truly global audience with just 31% of you being from my home country of Australia, and it’s a delight to see which random country the podcast might be charting in each week. If you have found the podcast helpful this year, you know what to do - leave a rating or review and tell a friend. I look forward to sharing brand new episodes with you in February 2021 - who knows what the world will look like then! Until then, keep working on your leadership through Leadership Today On-Demand. Just go to the Leadership.Today website and follow the On-Demand link. There is hours of video-based content. If you like the podcast, you’re going to love it. I will be back to host a replay next week.

Study Notes Ed Underwood FROM MALACHI TO MATTHEW Galatians 4:4 But when the appropriate time had come, God sent out his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we may be adopted as sons with full rights (Galatians 4:4). Malachi closed the Old Testament with the last words the Jews would hear from God for four hundred years. A contemporary of Nehemiah, Malachi preached sermons about the problems Nehemiah faced (Nehemiah 13). Time had run out for that generation of Israelites. Refusing to follow the Law of Moses, their only hope to fulfill their mission of blessing the world by saving it from God’s curse (Genesis 12:1-3) was divine intervention. God will send Elijah before the great Day of the Lord. He will restore Israel to the covenant and save the world! Then, the Lord simply stopped speaking to Israel. Over 400 years later, John the Baptist, the Elijah-like prophet Malachi promised would prepare the way for Messiah (Malachi 3:2), broke the silence. After preaching repentance to the rebellious nation, John’s message suddenly changed when He introduced Jesus of Nazareth to God’s people, Israel: Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29). A lot had changed since the time of Malachi. Rome was the dominant world power and ruled over most of the ancient Old Testament lands. Yet, in a small town of Palestine, Bethlehem of Judea, the one who would save the world was born—Jesus Christ. And though God had been quiet for 400 years, He had not been idle! Concerning the birth of the Savior, the apostle wrote, “But when the appropriate time had come, God sent out his Son” (Galatians 4:4). God prepared the way for the Savior of the world! In several extraordinary and wonderful ways, God prepared the world for the coming of Messiah. Both Paul and Mark called attention to the historical era that preceded the coming of Christ to earth. I. The Father sent the Son to be the Savior of the world (1 John 4:14) with perfect timing (Mark 1:15; Galatians 4:4). Summary: As a human father chooses the time for the birth of his child, so the Heavenly Father chose the time for the coming of Christ to save the world from bondage to works systems of righteousness (Galatians 4:4). 1. Context: Israel, was enslaved by the law (and the rest of the world through various systems of works righteousness) until Christ emancipated them. 2. The Father planned Christ’s coming with precise timing—when the world was ripe (fullness, appropriate, in the context of time, means the complete end of a period of time) for His message of deliverance. Three ways God had been working so that the time would be “full” or ripe for Christ’s coming: 1. Jewish Hope for their Messiah! a. The entire Old Testament looks forward to the coming of Christ. God had chosen Israel from all the nations of the world (Exodus 1:5-6). Beginning with the promises to the patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (Genesis 12:1-3; Romans 9:4), they were the guardians of God’s Word (Romans 3:2) and the people from whom the Redeemer would come (Genesis 12:3; Galatians 3:8; Romans 9:5). The Old Testament anticipated Christ’s coming as a suffering and glorified Savior in precise prophecies giving details of Messiah’s lineage, place of birth, world conditions at the time of His birth, life, death, and even His resurrection. b. Though Israel was disobedient and was under judgment from the days of Malachi, they were in the land as God had promised before the coming of Messiah. Though 400 years had passed and the religious climate had only become worse through Pharisaic hypocrisy and the Sadducees’ secularism, there was a spirit of Messianic anticipation in the air and a righteous remnant was looking for the Messiah (Simeon, Luke 2:25). The Jews offered to the world the hope of a coming Messiah who would bring righteousness to the earth. This tiny captive nation, situated on the crossroads of Asia, Africa, and Europe provided the spiritual heredity of Christianity and, for a time, even gave the infant church its leaders and shelter. Israel provided the spiritual environment to propel the Gospel around the world. Roman peace and roads! Free movement about the Mediterranean would have been most difficult for the messengers of the Gospel before the reign of Augustus Caesar (27 BC-AD 14). The ancient world had been divided into warring tribes or city-states prior to the extension of Roman imperial power. Roman sailors kept the peace on the seas and Roman soldiers secured the roads of Asia, Africa, and Europe. Roman conquests that resulted in 100 years of relative peace as the church was born had also led to a loss of belief by many peoples in their pagan gods that had failed to protect them against Caesar’s legions. The Romans developed the world’s first system of roads radiating out from the Roman forum to the corners of the empire. The main roads were built of concrete and some exist today. The Gospel of Christ moved quickly across these Roman roads to strategic cities located throughout the Empire. The Roman Empire provided a political environment unique in history that was favorable to the spread of Christianity in the days of its infancy. Greek language and philosophy! More than 300 years before Christ, Alexander the Great had swept across the ancient world conquering one nation after another. Though the kingdom he established did not survive his death, the language of his armies, Koine or common Greek, did. By the time of Christ, Koine Greek had become the language of the common man throughout the Mediterranean world. The universal Gospel needed a universal language, and God provided it through the genius and ambition of Alexander—Koine Greek, one of the clearest and most precise languages of all time. Greek philosophy, though godless, was undermining pagan polytheistic religions around the world because they were rationally unintelligible. The bankruptcy of paganism and consequent pursuits of Greek philosophy left the conquered peoples of Rome thirsty for spiritual reality. Greece provided the intellectual environment that aided the propagation of the Gospel. II. God always prepares the way for people to meet Christ (Galatians 1:15-16). A. How did He prepare you for your introduction to His Son? Praise Him for His sovereign grace in the circumstances of your life this Easter Season! B. Who needs to meet Christ in your world? Ask the Father to prepare the way this Easter Season and tell Him you are willing to share the Good News! “After Malachi had ceased his prophesying and the canon of the Old Testament closed—that is, the number of the books in the Old Testament was fulfilled and the inspired prophets ceased to speak—God allowed a period of time for the teachings of the Old Testament to penetrate throughout the world. During this time, he rearranged the scenes of history, much as a stage crew will rearrange the stage sets after the curtain has fallen, and when the curtain rises again there is an entirely new setting.” –Ray Stedman
Summary As human beings we often act out of self-interest, but is that the best way to lead others? Recent research sheds a light on whether we make better decisions when considering others. Transcript Hello and welcome to episode 97 of the Leadership Today podcast where each week we bring research to life in your leadership. This week we explore whether we make better decisions when considering others. I define leadership as achieving results through people for good. The ‘for good’ element is a values statement on my part - it’s how I would hope leaders would act. I’m sure you would also hope that leaders are aiming for collective benefit more than just self-interest. However, it seems when it comes to learning and decision making we are wired to think primarily of ourselves first. Take, for example, experiments where people are asked to learn a new game in return for a cash payout. Participants learn faster and make better decisions when earning money for themselves than when they are earning money for someone else. Self-interest leads them to put more effort and attention into the learning process. But what about when there’s a downside? What if, instead of earning money, we are trying to avoid a penalty or harm? Are we still primarily self-interested? Recent research using an electric shock game provides an insight into these questions. Now, let’s be honest here - psychologists have had a long and occasionally dodgy love affair with passing electricity through people in the name of science. Remember the time we found out that most people would electrocute others to the point of them pleading for help and becoming unconscious rather than disobey someone wearing a lab coat? Thankfully, we do have some ethics and no one in that famous Milgram experiment was actually delivered an electrical shock - it was all actors. In the case of this recent research, the shocks were very much real, but weren’t harmful. The experiment involved two versions of a task where participants would choose between two abstract symbols, one of which would lead to a lower chance of delivering an electrical shock. In one version of the experiment the shock would be delivered to the participant making the decisions. In a second version, the shock would be delivered to someone else. Participants performed better on the task when their choices would result in a shock for someone else, than they did if they were the ones receiving the shock. A level of empathy meant that people worked harder to optimise their decisions to reduce harm to others. fMRI scans during the experiment revealed different brain regions being activated in the two different versions of the electric shock game. If the shock is being delivered to the participant making the choices, regions associated with evaluating decisions light up. If the shock is going to be delivered to someone else, areas associated with evaluating the emotional state of others also light up. So that’s great news - when we are aware of a downside for others, we tend to demonstrate greater care in our decision making. What’s really interesting it that greater care leads to more effective decisions being made. Our decisions improve when we consider others. So what does this mean for the way we lead? Hopefully you’re not in a workplace that has a penchant for delivering electrical shocks. But, as leaders, our decisions often have potential upside benefits and downside impacts on others. The standard business mantra is that decisions should be focused on data - just stick to the facts. While there’s some truth to that, we need to broaden what we include as data. We need to extend our definition of ‘data’ to include the potential impact on others. The research suggests that isn’t just good for others, but ultimately leads us to make better decisions. As teachers are asked to take on more and more - both in terms of to-do lists and social emotional support of students - our own mental health is being put on a back burner. Today's guests says it's time to move teacher well being to the forefront and help teachers be the best, happiest versions of themselves, so they can be the best, happiest teachers they can be. Today's Guest: Danna Thomas, Happy Teacher Revolution Danna Thomas has gone, in her words, from “Miss Thomas, kindergarten teacher” to “Danna, founder of a revolution” in just a few years. The former Baltimore City Public Schools educator now runs Happy Teacher Revolution, an international movement that hosts mental health and wellness support groups for teachers. More than 1,500 teachers have taken part in the program to date. Summary As a new teacher, Danna Thomas found herself working late every night, getting to school early every morning, and spending more time in her classroom than any other place on the planet. When she realized that this was not something that could continue she decided to switch schools and, in doing so, set some boundaries for herself so that she could not only be a great teacher, but also a happy person. In the process she certainly ruffled some feathers and challenged some norms, but she also discovered but she had become a role model for other teachers who were struggling under the weight of the classroom. Before making the leap to working on Happy Teacher Revolution full-time Dennis struggled with asking things first leaving teaching behind meant leaving a steady job a steady paycheck and tenure and health insurance. It also meant recognizing her own ability Uline Uline She also had to address the issue of self worth. Even though teachers are innovative, creative, unique individuals, over the last several years (or decades) education has begun to systematically make us question our value our abilities and our worth. We've bought into the idea that teachers not only often struggle with money, but that if we should be doing so. So when a teacher decides to do something for themselves that could make money, they hesitate because they feel bad making money. They feel bad charging for something that they do. And if they do charge, they often charge far less than the service or product is worth. All these things compound to make it even more difficult to improve their situation because of constant financial strain. When she started Danna took a lot of inspiration from podcast about successful entrepreneurs. And one thing she took away from many of them was the idea of human centered design, which is just a fancy way of saying asking questions of people you hope to serve. So she asked educators how can she help teachers heal, deal, and be real about the social emotional and intellectual demands they face on the job Quick tips for setting and sticking to boundaries as a teacher: Have an accountability partner to make sure you’re abiding by your boundaries. They can stop by your room at the end of the day to make sure you’re not staying too late, and remind you to take a break for lunch so you don’t forget to eat all day. Set an end of day routine that helps your brain switch from teacher mode to rest. Danna hangs up her lanyard, then showers and changes when she gets home to signal her brain that she’s on personal time now. (Kind of like a superhero changing back into their civis after saving the world again.) Set appointments for right after school so you have to leave at or close to the final bell. Take mental health days when you feel yourself getting overwhelmed.

Summary As leaders we need to make wise decisions in often complex and emotionally charged situations. This week we look at two techniques for making wiser decisions. Transcript Hello and welcome to episode 43 of the Leadership Today Podcast where each week we tackle one of today’s biggest leadership challenges. This week we look at two techniques for making wiser decisions. As leaders we need to make decisions in often complex and emotionally charged situations. When it comes to making decisions, we are often encouraged to think of our brain like it’s a computer - that our consciousness is the sum total of electrical impulses rushing around circuits producing a stream of thoughts. However, our brains aren’t just thinking machines - they’re also emotion machines. What the computer analogy overlooks is the electro-chemical nature of the brain - that our thoughts and emotions aren’t just about electrical impulses, but also about the chemicals that interact with and moderate these systems. Our brain constantly influences, and is influenced by, our emotional state. Our emotional state can help or hinder our decision making. When we’re in a positive emotional state we make better decisions and more readily identify the up side potential of situations. When we’re anxious or stressed we tend to focus on the negatives and become less creative and more risk averse. To make wiser decisions, it’s helpful to separate out the thoughts and feelings associated with the situation - to recognise the feelings, and act on the facts. One way to do this is to take a third person perspective. Research outlined by David Robson shows that thinking in the third person improves decision making. This approach increases our willingness to consider others’ perspectives, and also allows us to be more open to new ways of thinking about the situation. Let’s consider an example - that I have a difficult meeting coming up with one of my team members. Using this approach I switch from saying to myself “I have a challenging conversation coming up with John” to “Andrew has a challenging conversation coming up with John”. I can then work though a series of questions: How do I feel about the situation? What emotions am I experiencing? Perhaps I’m feeling frustrated with how John has approached an issue and am worried about how he will respond to the feedback I need to give him. Even the process of naming the emotions reduces some of their ‘charge’ and control over our thinking. What are the facts of the situation? What’s the data that others would also see and agree with? Before I have my meeting with John, it would be helpful to note down the facts as they relate to the conversation we’re about to have. What advice would I give to a friend in the same situation I’m facing? This helps us to consider the situation at a distance. With John this would allow me to view the situation at arm’s length rather than getting too caught up in the details and history. One other approach that can help you to act more wisely is to make a decision and then choose to run with it. Once you’ve considered all the factors, commit to your course of action for a set period of time without revisiting it. This approach can help to reduce the rumination and worry that leads us to make poor decisions. For example, research shows that people who check their stock market investments more frequently end up making worse investment decisions and earn lower returns than those who check less frequently. Those who check frequently tend to focus on the negatives and pull out of investments too quickly. It’s similar to people who are always thinking about getting a better job and keep checking for new opportunities - they tend to end up constantly worried and less satisfied with their current job than if they had committed to the job for a period of several months. This week I encourage you to look for opportunities to apply these two approaches - considering situations in the third person and then sticking to your decisions. Summary As a leader, it’s likely that you have had to deliver bad news. It can be extremely difficult to do well. This week we look at practical ways to deliver negative news, and hopefully not become the messenger that gets shot in the process. Transcript Hello and welcome to episode 38 of the Leadership Today Podcast where each week we tackle one of today’s biggest leadership challenges. This week we look at practical ways to deliver negative news, and hopefully not become the messenger that gets shot in the process. No doubt you’ve heard the saying “Don’t shoot the messenger”. You might think it’s just another saying, but recent research suggests that is exactly what we do. Through a series of experiments the researchers at Harvard found that people end up not liking those who bear bad news, even when the person wasn’t the decision maker. And the impact is literally on ratings of the messenger - people don’t end up thinking any less of another representative standing next to the messenger while the bad news is shared. The effect of people disliking the messenger is particularly strong when the bad news isn’t expected or doesn’t make complete sense to the person receiving the news. The researchers saw such news as challenging our assumptions that the world is “just, predictable, and comprehensible”. In such circumstances we tend to question the motives of the messenger - what are they really trying to do, and what are they getting out of it? Once the bad news is delivered, people may be less likely to then want to interact with the messenger, but the messenger is often the very person who is best placed to offer support for next steps. As a leader, the most difficult news I had to deliver was making people redundant - people I knew well and liked that we had to let go for reasons entirely out of their control. We had about as good a process as we could around that, but the relationships with the individuals were permanently damaged. Just like the research suggested, they naturally thought less of me as the messenger. After all, who wants to keep in touch with the person who made them redundant? But there are some steps we can take to help avoid being the messenger that gets shot: Be direct and clear - it can be tempting to try to soften the news, but just end up making it less clear. What are the fewest words you can use to distil the message down to the core. Let them know the reasons behind the decision or information - be honest about what you do and don’t know. Let them know how you feel and your motives - you are a human being delivering a message to another human being. It’s not about you - conveying the message is primarily about them, so don’t make it about you. Acknowledge the emotions - that the news is likely to impact them, and that’s perfectly understandable. Check in for understanding - ask them to share the news in their own words and clarify anything that isn’t clear. Commit to supporting them - let them know that you’re here to help. Look after yourself - sharing bad news can knock you around, so find others who can support you. If we follow each of these steps, we’re in a much better position to deliver negative news in a way where people can hear it, process it, and then seek additional support. Dungeons & Dragons is full of unique and dangerous locations, and the panel of Dungeon Masters sit down in this week’s episode to cover a wide variety of topics regarding the settings of campaigns. From the importance of climate and weather to a whirlwind tour of the planes, the DM's travel around the landscapes and dispense their own unique takes on the worlds of Dungeons and Dragons. SUMMARY: As the DM's continue their discussion on Exploration, they stop to look at how environments can change gameplay in Dungeons and Dragons. While touching on mechanics like Survival and Visibility, the panel looks at the use of time in game and how fantasy settings can be fantastical aspects of the real world. They explore the different feelings of some published environments, including The Temple of Elemental Evil from Princes of the Apocalypse, Chult from Tomb of Annihilation, Barovia and Castle Ravenloft from Curse of Strahd, and The Tomb of Horrors from Tales from The Yawning Portal, as well as taking a quick tour of the planes that even the newest players can understand, focusing for a little on the Feywild and the Underdark. Terry talks about using the environment as a puzzle, Dan brings up the use of weather for establishing tone, and Adam discusses how he uses time and location in conjunction with random encounter tables. Whether it's discussing the importance of roads or the ideal weather for fighting a white dragon, the conversation gets deeper into why Exploration is so important in Dungeons and Dragons, no matter the campaign. Title: Removing the (Goalie’s) Mask of Mental Illness Guest: Corey Hirsch Sportscaster, Former Vancouver Canucks Goaltender, Former St. Louis Blues Coach Summary: As a Vancouver Canucks goaltender, he seemed to have it all. Corey Hirsch was at the top of his game, but he couldn’t block the dark, obsessive thoughts that raced through his mind like incessant breakaways. As a professional athlete, he was afraid of appearing weak by admitting that he needed help for mental health, so he affixed his goalie’s mask as a shield against shame. That was a quarter century ago. Today, after openly sharing his story just last year about his OCD diagnosis and ruminating suicidal thoughts, he is declaring that there’s nothing to be ashamed of by acknowledging mental illness. In fact, it is now his life’s mission. In our first over-the-phone podcast interview, Corey Hirsch – also a goaltending coach with the St. Louis Blues for four years – tells Executive Director Tom Duff, MSW, LCSW why it is essential that mental-health issues be openly discussed. “I’m not alone. We’re not alone. Mental health awareness is an enormous, unspoken problem -- not just in hockey in Canada and the United States, and not just in sports in general, but also across all other spectrums of society,” he stated on The Players’ Tribune website. “There’s nothing to be embarrassed or ashamed about. We’re all just trying to get through the day. So let’s be open. Let’s talk about it.” Let’s definitely talk about it! It’s time to #BreakDownStigma
Summary As the end of the year fast approaches, we take a look at goal setting - something we all know a lot about, and yet we’re lousy at it. Here are four ideas that might help. Transcript Welcome to episode 22 of the Leadership Today Podcast where each week we tackle one of today’s biggest leadership challenges. If I was to ask you “Tell me about the best approaches to goal setting?”, you’re pretty likely to mention SMART goals. We all know goals work best when they’re Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-based. And yet as human beings we are still pretty lousy at setting and following through on goals. Today I want to focus on four quick tips for setting better goals. A few years back I set a goal for myself - I said “I want to become a better cook”. So I dutifully picked up Jamie Oliver’s 15 minute meals book - that sounded pretty achievable. I picked out a meal and got to work. Well, 90 minutes, one fennel and three fry pans later, the meal still didn’t look anything like the photo in the book. Plus I discovered that Jamie hadn’t factored in cleaning up time to the 15 minutes. I gave up. Around the same time I set myself another goal - “I will go for a run every day of the week except Sunday”. Now I had tried running before, even setting a goal to run three times a week. But the inevitable happened - Monday it was a little cold, Tuesday I just wasn’t feeling it, Wednesday there was the sound of rain on the roof - and so on until Saturday. To make up for the lost days I would then run three times as far on Saturday and injure myself, knocking out running for another week. In contrast, my “run every day except Sunday” strategy has held up for over a year. So what made that goal stick, unlike my goal around becoming a better cook? The first difference is word choice - there’s a big difference between “want” and “will”. If you say you want to do something, you’re indicating a preference. If you say you will do something, you’re stating a commitment. Commitments trump preferences any day. Always make sure you express your goal as a “will” statement. Second is the middle part of SMART goal setting - Achievable. This is partly about setting a goal that you think is possible. But it’s also about setting goals that you can actually mark off as complete. The beauty of the “run every day except Sunday” goal is that I either completed it in a particular week, or I didn’t complete it that week. Test the wording of your goal to make sure it is something you can actually mark off as complete. The third key for me was clearly picturing how the process of completing the goal would make me feel. The reality of starting a run on 46 year old knees is not pretty - the first few steps never feel great. But one minute into the run I always feel great, so I focus on that moment as I roll out of bed. And the fourth key is identifying why the goal matters to you. If you set a goal that doesn’t matter to you, just cross it out - you’re never going to achieve it. For me, running is about keeping fit for my family and my work, both of which I love. Running was part of a broader purpose. As you set goals for yourself, remember to say “will” not “want”, make it something you can mark off, picture the benefits of the process, and identify why the goal matters to you. Summary As leaders, there’s always a risk of blaming people rather than processes. This week we look at a technique that helps us to avoid playing the blame game. TRANSCRIPT Welcome to episode twenty of the Leadership Today podcast. Each week we provide practical advice to address some of today’s biggest leadership challenges. In this episode we’re looking at ways to avoid playing the blame game. As leaders, there’s always a risk of blaming people rather than processes. Something goes wrong and the first thing we want to identify is who is to blame. After all, we’re responsible for the processes, so there’s a built-in desire to protect ourselves by blaming some incompetent or malicious individual rather than our wonderfully crafted systems. Blaming people is a pretty natural way of defending ourselves and maintaining our self esteem. However, it’s not a great way of building trust, getting to the root cause of problems or improving performance. If a leader is constantly blaming their people, you have to wonder - who hired these people, and who has been managing their performance? It’s the same leader who’s now playing the blame game. When leaders play the blame game, it leads to fear, and fear leads to cover ups, and cover ups lead to increased risk. Who would raise a concern when they know there’s a risk of being blamed and all the negative consequences that come with that? The team quickly learn the importance of sweeping things under the carpet. And that seems fine in the short term, until the issues mount up and are impossible to ignore. So, as leaders, it can be helpful to have a technique that allows us to get to the root cause of problems without automatically blaming people. One simple tool is called 5 whys, originally pioneered by Sakichi Toyoda as part of the Toyota Production System. While it was initially conceived as an engineering method, it works equally well on any sort of problem you’re likely to encounter in the workplace. As a result, it has been incorporated into a broad range of continuous improvement methodologies. To use the 5 whys approach, you start with the problem, then look for the preceding cause of the problem by asking ‘why’ - why did the problem occur. The idea being that after you’ve worked backwards by asking ‘why’ five times, you should be at or pretty close to the root cause of the problem. One of the principles is that you can’t have human error as the root cause - instead, you need to focus on the process, not the people. 5 whys is fact driven and logical - it’s about evidence rather than opinions. This takes a lot of the heat out of the approach. Let’s look at an example to bring the 5 whys approach to life. You hang up the phone from a disgruntled customer. They’ve just visited your local store to find their favourite item was out of stock. To make things worse, they had actually called the store the day before to confirm the item would be in stock, and were told new stock was arriving overnight and would be there the next day. Now they’re going to take their business elsewhere. Your natural inclination is to ring the store manager and tell them off for letting the customer down by not keeping enough stock and overpromising to the customer - a classic blame game response. Instead you call the store manager and try to figure out the root cause. Why was the store out of stock? Because the scheduled order hadn’t arrived. Why did the scheduled order not arrive? Because the delivery truck broke down on the way to the store. Why did the delivery truck break down? Because of a broken fan belt. Why did the fan belt break? Because the truck hadn’t been serviced. Why hadn’t the truck been scheduled? Because there wasn’t a schedule in place for truck servicing. The lack of a schedule for servicing our fleet of trucks was the root cause for the stock outage. It turned out the root cause didn’t have anything to do with the store manager - the problem was in an entirely different part of the organisation. The risk now is that we try to track down who is responsible for truck servicing schedules and blame them. Instead, a much more constructive approach is to look at this as a shared problem, and something that can be avoided in the future through continuous improvement. In fact, fixing the truck servicing might help to avoid a whole range of other problems in the future - ones that wouldn’t have been avoided if we had just berated the store manager. Now, 5 whys as a technique is not perfect. For example, it tends to uncover one root cause, when there may be several. And there’s nothing magical about 5 whys - it might only take 3 whys, or perhaps 10 whys to get to the root cause. And sometimes the problem is a person. But the principle of looking at processes and systems first before blaming people is one that any leader can bring to their approach.

In part one of this two-part episode I talk about some of my top tips for creating an efficient workflow and how I’ve applied them to my wedding photography business. EPISODE #76: TOP 12 REASONS WHY PROSPECTIVE CLIENTS DON'T BOOK ME - PART 1 Summary: As wedding photographers looking to grow our businesses and book more clients, we’re always looking for success stories of how others have achieved the goals we set for ourselves. But when it comes down to it, there’s a lot we can learn from why prospective wedding photography clients don’t decide to book our services and end up going elsewhere. This episode looks into some of the reasons why prospective wedding photography clients have decided not to book me in the past. From liking someone else’s style over mine to getting another referral from family and friends and simply that my price was too high, we’ll look into some of these reasons. In the early years, sometimes it came down to a lack of authority in the wedding photography world, with few online reviews and no experience shooting at their venue or their type of wedding. While in other instances it was because I didn’t offer both photography and videography services, or that they simply didn’t click with me as a person. Being rejected by a prospective client is not the end of the world, but recognizing why and addressing the issue if you can is an important part of developing your wedding photography business and booking more clients in the future. EPISODE #62: DID I MEET MY 2016 NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION GOALS FOR MY BUSINESS? Summary: As we ring in the New Year 2017, it’s the perfect time to look back at your wedding photography business goals for 2016 and set new resolutions. When you are your own boss, it’s important that you are constantly motivating yourself. A new year is as good a time as any to evaluate what worked during the past twelve months (and what didn’t) and reassess what you want to achieve in the coming year. In this podcast, I take a look back at the wedding photography business goals I set in 2016 and ask myself whether I achieved what I set out to. From connecting better with other wedding vendors and venues, to being financially savvy when it comes to investing my hard earned money, this is a moment to reflect on these past resolutions and redefine where I want my business to be heading. I’ll talk about some of the resolutions I need to work more on (like not always giving people the benefit of the doubt) and address some of the creative goals I set, like taking more calculated risks during my wedding shoots to creating more compelling portraits. Some of my wedding photography business goals were also of a more personal nature, like trying to establish stricter working hours so that my business doesn’t impose on my relationship at home or the leisure time I have available. While I achieved some of these New Year resolutions, I feel that others can be honed further in the coming year. By looking back on the wedding photography business goals I set at the start of 2016, I hope it will inspire you to do the same, and establish a fresh set of resolutions to achieve in 2017. However, none of these have dealt with the two most basic principles of geopolitical upheaval: The Uncertainty Principle; and, Chaos Theory. As a preface to this treatise, may I direct you to The Art of Christian Warfare series located in the online study forum at The University of Excellence. My reason for doing so is twofold: Your first line of defense should be spiritual warfare; and, What good is it to know – or think you know – about eschatological (end time) warfare if you are not prepared for warfare in the present. Also, if you just “happen” to be positioned in the segue to tribulation time(s), you will … above all else … need to know all you can about spiritual warfare. The Uncertainty Principle The Uncertainty Principle is basic to every day life. Having learned such is your first doorway to maximum (natural) achievement in any long term endeavor. You might want to study my two publications dealing with the Principle of Uncertainty as it relates to the following: 2012 Synopsis of End Time Alignment of Nations CHINA has much to gain from the demise of the US … and the US dollar, as opposed to India, who only wants positioning on the NEW Global Currency as part of world economic leadership. However, China has plans in place for the downfall of the USA in international psychology, or game theory – similar to intercorporate group dynamics – and based upon the Nash Equilibrium. Prince Handley believes that China will at some point in the next 5 to 7 years assume an already SECRETLY SCHEDULED strategy – replacing its “seeming” position as regards its “partners of probability” in the Nash Equilibrium scenarios – of The Kuebler-Ross Model of Change, and use SHOCK to their advantage in order to argue for ACCEPTANCE in the 10 region New Global Governance along with Islam … to the rejection of its diplomatic ties with not only its other competitors, but mainly its diplomatic friend: Israel. Faith, Quantum Physics and Your Future One reason you need to see the future – and to understand the influence of uncertainty – is so you can effectively profit from: The past and present: The nature of reality; and, The operation of faith. The Past You may march off to the woods or go to war without having a knowledge of history, or as one who suffers from amnesia, but you can perform neither effectively nor optimally. The Present To advance into the Future, you must occupy a position in the present. The Future If you don't relate to the future, you can NOT minimize latency with the past and the present; therefore, you do not interact with optimal information for decision making and action. As stated above, to advance into the future you must have a quantized / momentary position in the present (you need a position from which to advance); And, for logistical purposes you require: Knowledge; Material; Experience; and, Networks. All of the above are derived from the past … even though you are operating in the momentary, quantized, present, The “present” will be the past location when you advance. For all practical purposes, we (as a Global Society) can forget about climate change and long term environmental mandates. These will prove to be miniscule efforts and will have microscopic results in relation to what is set to happen. These expenditures of time, labor and money would be much better spent on providing: 1. Relief efforts to famine stricken areas; and, 2. Water wells to areas who have no or minimal clean water resources. We learn from The Revelation that in the future the following three life critical emements are going to be toxically contaminated to the extent of harmful effects on the human race: Soil, Air, Water. I suggest you refer to Revelation and End Times: A Flow Chart of End Time Happenings. The influence of uncertainty is NOT even on the agenda of most prophecy writers – or readers. What IF all the money received from books, TV, DVD's and seminars dealing with prophecy and end times were redirected towards future strategies dealing with the influence of uncertainty in the end times. Let me give you just two examples: What about the other believing Jews around the world (in the Time of Jacob's Trouble … the Great Tribulation) who do NOT make it to the place prepared in the wilderness (maybe Petra?) where the believing Jews flee from the pseudo messiah? (See Brit Chadashah: Revelation 12:13-17.) What about creating mass media advertising about Mashiach, the End Times, and the “pseudo mashiach” to prepare Jews and others for what we know is really going to happen in the End Time. A marketing blitz that will NOT be forgotten; one that will cause people to think and remember – and be aware – of WHAT is really happening WHEN it happens! Chaos Theory The Uncertainty Principle prohibits accuracy. The evolution of a complex system can therefore NOT be accurately predicted … except by skeletal “waymarks” such as in Bible prophecy. The two main components of chaos theory are the ideas that systems - no matter how complex they may be - rely upon an underlying order, and that very simple or small systems and events can cause very complex behaviors or events. This latter idea is known as sensitive dependence on initial conditions , a circumstance discovered by Edward Lorenz (who is generally credited as the first experimenter in the area of chaos) in the early 1960s. However, Chaos Theory allows for GREAT departure – and at the same time – possible overlapping or “nearly repetitive cycles” of the initial conditions. For example, the “Seal, Trumpet and Bowl” judgments in the Book of Revelation might NOT have to be only consecutive or segmentally chronological. They may overlap … they may coincide … they may be simultaneous after unfolding … and, they may have NO predictability … EXCEPT that we KNOW they will happen! Summary As good stewards of Messiah Yeshua, because of the influence of uncertainty and the complex behaviors inherent with chaos dynamics, we must prepare and publish a worldwide permanent body of knowledge structured upon Biblical Prophecy for the following: Easily accessible and permanent information about Future Environmental Toxicity (the Judgments of The Revelation) – WHAT to do (i.e., how to know Messiah Yeshua); and, Media preparation for Jews, Israel, and Gentiles – WHAT will happen and WHY! ______________________________________________________________ CHALLENGE: Will you be the one to create and implement an End Time MEDIA project toinform Jews, Israel and Gentiles of WHAT will happen soon on Planet Earth?_______________________________________________________ We must also ramp up on spiritual warfare: both individually and corporately as members together in Messiah's Body. Maintain “looking for His appearing,” but stop arguing with other believers about when or when not the “rapture” will happen. (It wasn't a doctrine in the church until the 1800's anyway.) Fellowship with other believers; focus on the KEY prophecies, and win people to Messiah Jesus! Lots of people I talk to say they are going to WAIT until the Believers are missing, and then they will receive Jesus. We need to tell them WHAT is going to happen … and to get ready NOW ... because a strong delusion is going to be sent upon the Planet Earth. Make sure YOU are ready for whatever happens … whenever it happens: the Lord Jesus “catching you up” … or the judgments falling first. I have attended the BEST Christian conservative theological seminaries in the world; one, just to study eschatology (plus the University of Judaism). Also, I studied under four of the top Hebrew and Greek scholars who worked on the NASV. Our view of WHEN the Believers in Messiah will be caught up in the air to be with Him is something WE decide for ourself … but WHEN He actually does this may be different. Our job is to watch for His Appearing! Many evangelical Bible teachers changed their view in the last 20 years?! My view of WHEN the Lord will "catch away" His People will NOT change WHEN He does it. I'm just going to keep looking for ... and loving ... His return! Here's something to think about: If we get mad at other Believers about their view of the “rapture” … OR … if WE don't or can't fellowship with other believers because of their view of the “rapture” … guess who needs help! Today's Message: "Praise Him." Worship Series, Part 1 of 4. SUMMARY: As a philosopher I find so much philosophy about God is framed in propositional language, e.g. ?If God?, then God?? which I find to be sterile and static; and so unlike the God of the Bible that I worship. As a pastor I find so many us Christians having an unimaginative view of God that we easily lose sight of the true greatness and grandeur of our God as revealed in Jesus Christ, which is a face to face encounter with the Maker of the cosmos. We need to be reminded of our Living God and it ought to produce in us genuine praise.
