We dive back into the electric world of Las Vegas with Ron and Holly, unzipping the juicy details of their second appearance on from Season 1, Episode 14. Holly steals the spotlight with her wild tales of uninhibited Vegas nights, where fun takes center stage, leaving safety-conscious Ron on edge, waiting for that crucial “I'm okay” text. The episode explores the highs and lows of their adventures, from boundary-pushing moments at clubs to unexpected experiences in the couples room, all while navigating the complexities of respect, communication, and trust in their dynamic. The conversation takes a deeper turn as Ron reflects on feeling disrespected by Holly's lack of communication, which Nessa is likening to parenting concerns, while Holly owns up to a big regret from her no-rules approach. They tackle topics like the challenges of going solo to a club, the reality of experiences not matching movie-like fantasies, and the absence of an exit word in their encounters. With humor and candor, the episode wraps up with a surprising discussion on glory hole rules and a lighthearted nod to even wilder recent experiences, leaving listeners buzzing about the couple's evolving journey. Our guest today is Chad Sonnier, Director of the Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (OHSEP) for Lafayette Parish. With over four decades of service in fire protection and emergency response, Chad Sonnier brings unmatched experience to the role of coordinating disaster preparedness, response, and recovery efforts across federal, state, and local agencies, nonprofits, and the private sector. "I was 18 years old, hired to be in the fire service and helping people in their time of need. It is something I've really become accustomed to, and I couldn't imagine doing anything else. I mean, people call 911 at their worst time of day or worst time in their life, and, we're there to help them, that's what we're there for." Chad served as City of Scott's Fire Chief before being named to his current post. He had served with the Lafayette Fire Department for years before his appointment with the City of Scott. Over the course of his career, Chad has worked as a hazmat technician, fire engineer, fire coordinator, and hazmat chief. In 2020, he was inducted into the Louisiana Fire Chiefs Hall of Fame—a testament to his lifelong passion for public safety. “Helping people is my passion. I couldn't imagine doing anything else,” Chad Sonnier shares. A Newly Formed Office The department was officially created in 2024 by Lafayette Mayor-President Monique Boulet, who recognized the growing federal and state mandates in emergency management and the need to keep her community safe. It now operates independently of 911 services, with a broader scope that includes emergency responses to events such as hurricanes, mass gatherings like Mardi Gras, hazardous material accidents, and unexpected “no-notice” events such as train derailments. This year in 2025, for the first time, Lafayette's Emergency Operations Center partially activated its services during Mardi Gras. Agencies including fire, police, Acadian Ambulance, local hospitals, and even federal partners like the FBI and ATF, worked side by side to ensure public safety. “When you're face to face in the same room, communications are so much better,” Chad explains. Beyond Hurricanes: Preparedness in Action While hurricanes are top of mind for many residents, Chad addressed the wide range of emergencies his office addresses to help those most in need: Warming and cooling centers – Established for residents without reliable heating or air conditioning, with help from partners such as Catholic Charities, Red Cross, and even private companies like Stines, which donated large cooling fans. Volunteer organizations – Hundreds of volunteers with local nonprofits and faith-based groups (VOADs) play an essential role in long-term recovery. These groups often provide building supplies, roof repairs, and mold remediation for families still suffering from past storms. College partnerships – Student-athletes contribute required service hours by assisting disaster victims, creating meaningful community connections. Chad reflects, “I was taken aback by how many people are willing to help, especially in Lafayette Parish. If it wasn't for these nonprofits, I don't know where a lot of people would be today.” Planning Ahead and Responding Fast Chad contrasts his years as a firefighter—where speed and immediate action are critical—with the long-term strategic planning required in his current role. Chad Sonnier served as Fire Chief of the City of Scott for 23 years His office scripts hurricane responses a week in advance of landfall, but also prepares in advance for sudden emergencies that occur without warning. “No-notice events” like hazardous material spills require rapid mobilization of shelters, water, food, and safe housing, often within an hour to ninety minutes. Recreation centers, the Cajundome, and other facilities are pre-designated as shelters or reunification centers,

Asking for a Friend - Is the Church a Mission Center or Social Club?

Sermon Audio – Cross of Grace

Matthew 28:16-20Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshiped him, but they doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age. We are party deprived. That's the argument Ellen Cushing makes in a wonderful little article in The Atlantic earlier this year. On any given weekend or holiday, only 4% of Americans hosted or attended a social event. Polling shows most people like the idea of parties, but nobody wants to host them. Maybe that sounds familiar.None of this should surprise us. More than any other time in modern history, adults spend less time with friends and more time alone—and we're strangely okay with it. In fact, we often prefer it. Confined to our couches, transfixed by our phones, feeding on the stories our screens serve us. Simply put: we need more parties. And yes, that's part of my response to today's question: is the church a mission center or a social club? This is the second-to-last week of our Asking for a Friend series. And we have covered lots of big topics. But today the question is both what should the church with a capital C—the universal body of Christ across all time and space—be, but also the lowercase c church: Cross of Grace. What are we? A mission center or a social club?Someone was looking at the list of questions a couple weeks ago and began laughing out loud. Oh no, I thought, we made a typo. But then they turned to me and said “who's preaching on the 14th?”. I lied and said I don't know because depending on why they laughed I might have changed it. But this person said well because it'll be the easiest answer of them all. I said “why is that?” and they said because the answer is yes!It is both a mission center and a social club. I'm sure many of you think so, too. But if I had to guess, most would say the church needs to be a mission center:the place that equips, educates, empowers, and then sends out not just people but disciples to share the gospel in word and deed. That's what Jesus commands in the Great Commission: Go, baptize, make disciples. Here at Cross of Grace, that language is familiar. Nearly 25 years ago, when we were just getting started in the school and knocking on doors, we called ourselves a mission center—even without a building. It's also why we call ourselves Partners in Mission, not members. Members join to consume. Think wellness center, country club, or book club. But partners engage to participate. And this mission of sharing the grace of Jesus Christ, with no strings attached, depends on your participation. It just so happens that church is also a social club. And sometimes we feel guilty about that—like fellowship is less important than mission, or just a by-product of “real” church work. But here's the problem: too often we treat mission and worship like consumers. We show up, get what we think we need, and leave. That makes faith transactional—something we “use” to make ourselves better. So maybe the real question is: should mission always come first, and fellowship second? I don't think so. I don't think that's what the Bible shows us, either. Which is why today I want to come to the defense of church as a social club, because fellowship is not secondary. It's essential.Keep in mind, when we talk about church as a mission center or social club, we're talking in metaphors. And metaphors are helpful—they give us new ways of seeing something familiar. But no single metaphor ever tells the whole story. Take the old saying that the church is a “hospital for sinners.” It sounds good, but if we lean on it too hard, church becomes just a place you visit when you're sick, get patched up, and leave until the next problem. Every metaphor has limits. Whether we call the church a hospital, a mission center, a social club, or one of the thousand other metaphors we use. At best, they point us toward the deeper truth: the church is a community of flawed people, gathered by God, given the gift of grace in Jesus Christ. This gift of grace doesn't just forgive us; it transforms us. It places us in relationship with God, and that changes who we are. As Isaiah says, we become a light that reveals the source of our gift, a lens that offers a new way of seeing the world. We become liberators for those held down by oppression. That is what Jesus did, and that becomes our mission too—not because we have to, but because we can't help but share what we ourselves have received. But that kind of work is never easy. It is hard, long, dangerous, and exhausting. Which is why the grace of God doesn't just send us out—it also gathers us in. It gives us each other. Because if we're going to live into this mission for any length of time, we will need fellowship. That's exactly what we see in Acts. After hearing Peter proclaim the grace of Jesus, the people were moved. But notice what they did next: they didn't scatter to form food pantries or community centers. Instead, they devoted themselves to eating and praying together. In just five verses, Acts gives us five reminders of the early church's desire simply to be with one another. Fellowship wasn't an afterthought, and it didn't come after mission. The two rose up together, side by side, as the Spirit's gift to the church. To me, the bigger miracle of Pentecost wasn't that people suddenly spoke in languages they had never learned. The real miracle was that people actually wanted to be with one another. Can you imagine such a thing in the year of our Lord 2025? Fellowship be damned—we'd rather be alone. Or maybe the deeper truth is we don't really know how to be together anymore. And that's exactly why I want to defend the Church—this church—as a social club for this moment in time. Because if we don't know how to be together, then practicing fellowship is the mission. At a time when political violence is rising, when fear of our neighbors is the default, when anxiety and loneliness feel normal—and we're largely okay with that—the work the church is called to right now is fellowship itself. And if you think that's not biblical, Jesus should did spend a lot of time eating and drinking with people… so much so that he was known as a glutton and a drunk. And the people weren't just his disciples, but those who were different from him in every imaginable way.Maybe if we spent more time together, if we ate and drank more together, if we learned how to talk and listen to one another, if we began to see the image of God in each person, we wouldn't feel the need to tear each other apart over political disagreements. I know that's an over simplification, but I also believe it's true. What's really happening at our social gatherings—brew club, Mardi Gras, Oktoberfest, moms' night, or anything else—is that the grace of Jesus Christ is shaping us. It's teaching us to be a people who want to be together. This desire is not soft sentimentality. It's the work of the Spirit: forming in us a determination to care for our neighbors and seek their good, even when they are different, indifferent, or opposed to us. Grace gives us the desire—and the courage—to be in the company of one another. And when we do, we begin to see the face of God in every person, whether a Partner in Mission, a neighbor, a friend, a Democrat, a Republican, a president, pundit, and more. The Church is constantly reforming how we meet the needs of our neighbors and the world around us. Right now that looks like more parties and more fellowship—especially with people who don't look, act, think, believe, or behave like us. Yet, what never changes is what we offer. The church, this church, always offers the grace of Jesus, with no strings attached. We offer it at the font, at the table, through the resources we share, and yes, through the fellowship that binds us together in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Frequent floods blight the poorest neighbourhoods of New Orleans but the residents are fighting back, one yard at a time. Physicist Helen Czerski joins the team behind the Front Yard Initiative as they strive to keep the Big Easy safe and dry, 20 years after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. When Katrina hit New Orleans in August 2005, the levees broke, 800,000 residents were forced out and 1800 people died. $14bn was spent on concrete and steel to rebuild the defences but the city still floods regularly. This water isn't coming from the Mississippi River sealed behind the new defences, it's coming from the skies. Sudden, violent rainstorms are becoming more frequent and the city's low income districts have notoriously inefficient drainage systems. The water lands on concrete and asphalt and quickly overwhelms the drains. The team behind the Front Yard Initiative is working, block by block, to help residents beat the floods by turning broken concrete into rainwater gardens. Native flowers and cheap, simple engineering are helping to transform neighbourhoods and attract new residents to the battered but beautiful home of jazz, gumbo and Mardi Gras.Image: An example of a front yard made into a rainwater garden, pictured with the owner and team behind front yard initiative. In Part 2, we pick up where we left off in Part 1. Carolyn and I talk about making decisions and intentionality vs. circumstance, need, and necessity. We then go on to talk more about Carolyn's lifelong love of sports. She shares the story of her maternal grandmother coming from The Philippines to live with them and how they'd watch games together. It was the days when, in much of the country, if you wanted to watch Major League Baseball, it was all Atlanta Braves, all the time (thanks to TBS, of course). Carolyn became a Braves fan, especially a fan of Dale Murphy. She watched football, too. She didn't watch the Giants on TV much, because every game wasn't televised in those days. But she could easily hop on Muni to see a game at Candlestick Park. Her dad often picked them up, showing up at the ballpark around the seventh inning, getting in free, and watching the end of the game with Carolyn and her friends and/or sisters. We go on a short sidebar about bundling up in San Francisco—at Candlestick and if you just wanted to go to the beach. In addition to Candlestick, she went to Warriors games a bit and also various sporting events at Cow Palace. Her dad learned how to bowl and would take his kids with him. We fast-forward a bit to hear about Carolyn's years in high school, when she went to the all-girl school Mercy High (which is now closed). Later, she took the same bus, the 29, to SF State that she had taken to Mercy. State was the only college she applied to. We talk a little about her decision not to leave San Francisco for school. In high school, she had decided that she wanted to be a sports writer. In fact, she aimed to become the first woman anchor at ESPN. We rewind a bit to talk about some of the journalism Carolyn did in high school. She had her own column in the school paper called “Off the Bench.” She shares a fun story of calling the Braves' front office to arrange for an interview with her favorite player—Murphy—the next time Atlanta rolled into town. In her third semester at SF State, Carolyn got pregnant. Around this time, she also took her first Asian-American Studies class, something that kicked in for her and stays with her to this day. She dove in head-first. I ask Carolyn whether and how much of that history her parents were aware of. She says that, for them, much of it was just things going on in their lives in the city they came to—things like the strike at SF State or the demonstrations at the I-Hotel in Manilatown. Learning more and more about the history of her people in the US lead Carolyn to confront her dad. “Why did you bring us here?” she'd ask. She ended up raising her first child, a mixed-race kid, as a single parent around this time in her life. She had figured that her son's dad would bring the kid the Blackness in his life, and she'd bring the Filipino-ness. Her own ideas of how best to raise the kid had to evolve, and they did, she says. She eventually returned to State and graduated. She lived in South City for a hot minute, held three jobs, and raised her son. She never felt that she couldn't leave The Bay. It was more, “Why would I?” Then, because if you know Carolyn Sideco, well, you know … then we talk about New Orleans. New Orleans is why and how Carolyn came into my life. My wife is borderline obsessed with The Crescent City. I'd been there some earlier in my life, growing up not too far away and having some Louisiana relatives. Erin and I spent three weeks in fall 2022 in a sublet in Bywater, Ninth Ward. That NOLA fever caught on for me then, and I'm hooked. Back home sometime after that, Carolyn came across Erin's radar. “There's a woman in San Francisco who seems to love New Orleans as much as I do and she has a house there!” Erin would tell me. In 2024, at a vegan Filipina pop-up at Victory Hall, we finally met this enigmatic woman. We ended up spending Mardi Gras this year at Carolyn's house in New Orleans—Kapwa Blue. “New Orleans has been calling me for about 20 years,” Carolyn says. One of her younger sisters lived there awhile. Her oldest son served in AmeriCorps there for three years and kept living in New Orleans four more. Carolyn and other members of her family visited often. This was around the time that Hurricane Katrina hit and devastated Southern Louisiana. A little more than a decade ago, Carolyn learned of the historical markers in the area that told the stories of Filipinos being the first Asians to settle in that part of the world. (Longtime listeners of Storied: SF might recall that Brenda Buenviaje hails from just across the Mississippi River from New Orleans.) As Carolyn learned more and more of the Filipino history in the region, that calling started to make more and more sense. Three years ago or so, her oldest son got married in New Orleans. That visit told Carolyn that she, too, could live there. Her husband devised a plan, and with some of Carolyn's cousins, they bought a house in the Musician's Village part of town, near the Ninth Ward—the aforementioned Kapwa Blue. They intended to bring that same sense of community her parents found and participated in back in San Francisco all those decades ago to their new neighborhood New Orleans. In addition to the house, Carolyn helped found tours of Filipino history in New Orleans and the surrounding area. Find them Bayou Barkada Instagram at @bayoubarkada Back in The City these days, Carolyn has her own sports consultancy called Coaching Kapwa (IG). “I call myself ‘Your sports relationship coach,'” she says. This means that she provides comfort and advice to anyone interacting with any of the various sports ecosystems. She aims to apply the idea of kapwa to an otherwise competition-driven sports landscape. We end the podcast (and the season) with Carolyn's interpretation of the theme of Storied: San Francisco, Season 7: Keep it local. She shares what that idea means for her here as well as how it pertains to her time in New Orleans. We'll be taking August off as far as new episodes go. I'll be busy putting together the first episodes of Season 8 and getting ready for the season launch party/art opening. “Every Kinda People” kicks off at Mini Bar on Sept. 4. That's also the theme of the next 20 or so episodes of this show. As always, thank you deeply and sincerely for listening/reading/sharing/liking/commenting/DMing/emailing/subscribing/rating/showing up and really any type of interaction you do with this passion project of mine. What Would You Do For Million Dollars? For the chance to score a seven-figure payday, 43% of Americans would ditch their romantic partner, according to a new survey.More than half (59%) would disappear and start a new life for a million bucks, while 41% would give up sex forever and 27% would marry someone they didn't love.Nearly half (46%) of the 2-thousand respondents would even participate in a real-life “Squid Game” competition for a shot at winning $33-million.⠀Wildest Things Kids Brought To School“A baby opossum — in his backpack that he found at the bus stop that morning.”“Sixth grader brought ‘brownies' and gave them to the ENTIRE grade level. There were students sitting against the walls on both sides of the hallway in the main office waiting to get interviewed by law enforcement.”“A life-sized cardboard cut-out of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. We propped her up in the window of the door overnight and scared extended-care folks and the janitor.”“Fifth grader brought weeks-old Jello shots from Mardi Gras.”“A kitten he found on his walk to school.”“Aztec death whistle.”“An expired Twinkie they had found on the bathroom floor.”“First grader brought his mom's copy of ‘Kama Sutra' and asked me to read it to the class.”“All the rent money from a mom's purse.”“Student ... unzips hoodie to reveal a boa constrictor snuggled around her neck.”“Grandma's wig. The good one. Gave it to me for Christmas.”“Fuzzy handcuffs that she said her mom loves.”Kids Embarrassing Their Parents“I made the mistake of telling my kid that if he didn't eat, he wouldn't grow. He told a person with dwarfism in the checkout line at the store that they needed to eat so they would grow.”“My son at 5 years old dropped a deuce in the toilet display at Lowe's.”“Just paid for an item at Walmart and walked out without it in a bag. My kid said loudly, ‘Are you stealing that?? We have to pay!'”“My daughter would ask every man she saw if they were her dad. Me and her dad were, and still are, together. She saw him daily, she just insisted on asking every man .... she even asked people when her dad was with us.”“When my daughter was 4, we were having breakfast in a restaurant and she asked the elderly lady next to us why she wasn't in heaven yet.”“I told my son he couldn't eat chips until we got home. He responded loudly, ‘But Mom, we don't have a home.' We very much did, and everybody at the store started offering housing resources.”“Walked into Wendy's and my 2 and 1/2 year-old looks at a lady and said in her loud, squeaky voice, ‘That lady is OLD. She's going to die soon.' Every head turned to look at said woman. We did not eat at Wendy's that night.”“My 5-year-old son asked if the gas station guy with the turban was a genie.”“My son loved to fake drown at water parks.”“My son told the pediatrician when he was 7 or 8, ‘My mom doesn't make us wear seatbelt and we duck if we see a cop.' NEVER HAPPENED and I was so speechless, I couldn't even react.”“My daughter asked the .... cashier (who was missing some teeth) if she ever brushed her teeth before.”Second Date UpdateAmanda calls us about Eli. They went out for drinks in Mountain View after meeting online. She thought he was attractive and smart, and they had a few hours of great conversation. Now nothing.

Send us a textSPECIAL NOTE: SEASON 15 OF THE GOOD, THE POD AND THE UGLY CELEBRATES THE USE OF THE PRACTICAL AND DIGITAL EFFECT KNOWN AS THE SQUIB. IRL GUN VIOLENCE IS INTOLERABLE AND RENOUNCED BUT... CINEMATIC VIOLENCE WILL BE CELEBRATED IN A WAY WILL DISTURB SOME LISTENERS.   This week, a pleasant return to cinema gun violence (after last week's entry of Gus Van Sant's school shooter film Elephant) as TGTPTU covers John Woo's American directorial début HARD TARGÈT (1993). The pod's temporal pincer movement again gets fudged this pairing to bring to you a Lance Henriksen double feature (next week's The Terminator), skipping the late- and mid90s (good film, btw, but Jonah Hill uses no squibs in his 2018 directorial début so it won't be covered during Season 15) and Way of the Gun (covered in a future pairing and now's not the time or place for reactions).    Hard Targét features Jean-Claude Van Damme in the rôle of Chance Boudreaux, a spicy Cajun seamen stranded and out of work needing $$$ so he can pay dues to ship out again and a former military badass and nephew to Coonass bootlegger Uncle Clarence Douvée played by Wilford Brimley who enters over halfway through the film in an almost surprise cameo appearance that outstays its welcome until the happy ending in a Mardi Gras float storage facility deep in the bayou where the final standoff between gooddée JCVD against baddée Henriksen (playing an inflammable globetrotting businessman in the business of orchestrating homeless veteran hunts) results in his (Brimley's) seeming death only to be saved by his flask (yay!) but loses the last of his final stills batch (sad!) before the abrupt conclusion of the film. Oh, and there's a woman character played by Yancy Butler looking for her daddée, whom we learned was homeless and we learn was played by the writer of the film in its opening manhunting scene. If you haven't surmised, the plot is basically “The Most Dangerous Game” minus the island and Cossack and charm of the short story and adding in Woo's vision of a Western and JCVD's kicks (but, sadly, no splits).   The majority of Henrickson's performance in what was written and shot to be a two-hander was cut out (just like 70% of the digressions and Frenchifications in this week's Show Notes), allegedly, by JCVD who worked with his own editor because, at the fin de la journée, this is a JCVD film and il est “aware.” (For Francophiles, please search the video interview of JCVD entitled “Jean-Claude Van Damme ‘Aware'”.)  Listen this week to hear if host and Brimley fan Ryan will remained un-Woo'ed after seeing his Quaker Oats forever old riding a horse; see how easily host Tom is derailed by mention of Buffy the Vampire Slayer; and find out if any of Ken's conspiracy theories are what have gotten this podcast shadow banned yet again.    Core hosts (les deux daddées et un Zoomer) only this week as Jacque is with his stepmom and her Nugget League of Mayhem adding glitter bombs and confetti to their Mardi Gras float this week.THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Bluesky: @goodpodugly.bsky.socialYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gLetterboxd (follow us!):Podcast: goodpoduglyKen: Ken KoralRyan: Ryan Tobias
