When Islands of Adventure's Toon Lagoon opened, an “innovative” new show debuted. Rocky and Bullwinkle, Betty Boop, and Beetle Bailey got together to put on a revue filled with razzle-dazzle crap. It was not exactly well received, and it closed within nine months.Ancient funny-page characters? Hooray-for-Hollywood bullshit? There's something about being on a motorcycle that just feels right — in ways that are hard to explain, but easy to recognize. Not long ago on the show, cognitive scientist Mark Changizi, author of Motorcycle Mind, talked about how riding a motorcycle is unlike anything else we do, because the physics involved mean the bike responds directly to your body — your balance, your inputs, your movement — reacting instantly, almost like a hybrid of human and machine moving as one. That connection sharpens focus and pulls you fully into the moment, and according to Changizi, it can change how our brains process space, motion, and risk. Those changes don't necessarily stop when the bike is shut off, and for some people, riding becomes a place to return to — a way forward when other things aren't working, a focus when life is closing in — and that idea sits at the center of today's episode, as Rusty David shares his story. This episode contains a brief reference to suicide. Adventure riding has a strange relationship with risk. We prepare, carry tools, research routes, ride with friends, and do everything we can to stack the odds in our favour on adventure motorcycle rides. But every now and then, something appears that wasn't on the map or in the plan, and it shows up faster than we can process it. In those moments, the problem isn't just the obstacle itself, but what happens next. This story takes place on a remote stretch of Nevada's historic Pony Express Trail, a well-known backcountry route for adventure riders—experienced riders, familiar terrain, and a route travelled for generations. It's the kind of ride where preparation feels like it should be enough, until it isn't, and decisions suddenly matter in ways you don't expect when riding far from help.

In this interview from our archives, we sit down with Riley Morton, a freelance documentary producer and cinematographer who kicked off his career two decades ago in the adventure sports space, producing documentaries and television about climbing, skiing, trail running, and adventure travel. Over the past decade, he has branched out, producing his own documentaries and collaborating on major projects. His newest creation is Endless Earth, a free app that features an ever-changing collection of professionally produced short travel films that capture some of the most fascinating, vibrant, and beautiful places on earth. They discuss a wide range of topics including what travel was like pre-social media and pre-smartphone, and how dramatically it has changed. As someone who is passionate about documentation, and has literally made it his profession, Riley discusses the limits of documentation during travel, and when he feels it's time to put down the camera and focus on the pure experience in and of itself. They also speculate on the future of travel in a post-Covid world, and wonder if access to travel should be guaranteed to all, or if it truly is only a privilege. Finally, he shares his tips on how to travel on a shoestring. Learn more about Endless Earth here. Find Riley at his website. This January, our archive episodes—presented every Friday—will cover the theme of ADVENTURE! Jim Morrison, a 26-year veteran of marriage and father of three (ages 24, 22, and 19), shares his unconventional approach to fatherhood that rebels against the idea that parenting ends at 18. As an insurance broker with 36 years of experience, Jim has learned to prioritize presence over perfection, building a family culture around travel, embracing failure as a gift, and maintaining deep relationships with his adult children. From coaching losing baseball seasons to picking his son up from LAX at 9 PM just to be the first face he sees, Jim demonstrates that fatherhood is a marathon requiring consistent showing up. He discusses the power of experiences over possessions, the importance of teaching financial literacy, how he and his wife navigated a five-year break before marriage, and why he believes surrounding your kids with the right community matters more than constant advice-giving. Jim's philosophy centers on making his children feel valued and important—not just loved—while preparing them for independence through international travel, mission trips, and letting them experience failure. This conversation will challenge fathers to think differently about their role beyond the teenage years and inspire them to create a family legacy built on experiences, presence, and unconditional relationship.Chapters:(00:00:00) - Introduction: Three Key Nuggets on Fatherhood(00:17:00) - The Role of a Father: Being Present(00:21:00) - When Did Fatherhood Click?(00:24:00) - The Gift of Failure: Book That Changed Everything(00:30:00) - Supporting Adult Kids Without Enabling Them(00:36:00) - Learning from His Own Father's Story(00:42:00) - Choosing Relationship Over Being Right(00:46:00) - Why Family Travel Became Their Foundation(00:50:00) - Favorite Family Vacations: Croatia and Africa(00:55:00) - Work Will Always Be There—Your Kids Won't(00:56:00) - Legacy: Making People Feel Valued and Important---------Transform Your Body with Ned & RUK Fitness: RUK FitnessThis episode is sponsored by The Adventure of FatherhoodOrder The Adventure of Fatherhood children's book hereCheck out the TEDx----------Want to learn more about The Adventure of Fatherhood?https://www.adventureoffatherhood.com/https://www.rebelandcreate.com/Each week Ned sits down with a dad and asks him to open up his field notes and share with other men who find themselves on the Adventure of Fatherhood. #876 Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/876   Presented by: AVC Rig Most adventure rigs look great online. Fewer are built for real miles, real weather, and those long fishing days that end well after dark. In this episode, I sit down with Matt Dunkerly to talk about building camper vans that actually work for anglers. Matt runs Adventure Vehicle Concepts, and his approach is refreshingly practical. This isn't about Instagram builds or overcomplicating things. It's about access, simplicity, and designing a rig that helps you fish more without getting in your own way. If you've been thinking about a van for fly fishing trips, road travel, or long weekends chasing water, this episode will help you avoid the most common mistakes before you ever pick up a tool. SERIES 4, EPISODE 1. Welcome back to a new series. Emmett Grogan was one of the defining figures of American counterculture in the 1960s. Though his name is almost completely unknown in Ireland, the author of Ringolevio: A Life Played for Keeps is a man for whom Bob Dylan dedicated an album, and who was described by Abbie Hoffman (who he distrusted greatly) as "the hippie warrior par excellence." Yet before the Summer of Love took San Francisco, Grogan was in Dublin in the early 1960s. His accounts of the city are fascinating, from Neary's to Guinness, but how much of it is true? You can read his account here: https://stealthiswiki.com/library/emmett-grogan-ringolevio
