Confessions of a Higher Ed Social Media Manager
Ep. 33: Turning Social Media into Your Top Recruitment Tool

Confessions of a Higher Ed Social Media Manager

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 6, 2025 26:03

Host Jenny sits down with Mikki Collins, a former higher ed social media manager at the University of Chichester, who shares her transformative journey in leveraging social media as a key recruitment tool. From developing student influencer programs to driving engagement on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, Mikki provides actionable insights into creating authentic connections and making the most of limited resources. Listen in as they discuss how higher ed social media professionals can shift their mindset from communications to strategic marketing.Key TakeawaysStudent Influencers are Gold: Current students and graduates are often the most effective voices for reaching prospective students.Adapt to Platform Dynamics: TikTok has evolved from a discovery platform to a search engine—use it strategically at different stages of the recruitment funnel.Targeted Content Wins: Tailor content to different stages of the recruitment funnel, from generating awareness to nurturing conversions.Leverage Social Listening: Search university nicknames and hashtags to uncover organic student-created content and trends.Metrics with Intent: Align success metrics (e.g., reach, engagement) with the goals for each recruitment funnel stage.Sustainable Social Media Practices: To avoid burnout, delete work-related social media apps during breaks and maintain healthy work-life boundaries. How Mikki Got Started in Higher Ed Social Media Mikki Collins began her career in higher education through a unique route, starting as a Student Union officer and later transitioning to a digital content role. She quickly gravitated toward social media as a tool to engage students, working with limited resources to grow the University of Chichester's online presence. Mikki's small team transformed from social media novices into UK leaders in higher ed social media by experimenting with tactics that resonated with their target audiences.Using Students as Influencers Mikki was an early adopter of the "students as influencers" concept. Realizing that prospective students wanted to hear from their peers, she used Instagram's Q&A feature and hashtags to discover students who were already creating authentic, high-engagement content about the university. This strategy uncovered micro and macro influencers—like one student with 300,000 followers—who were eager to collaborate. By partnering with these students, Mikki's team amplified the university's reach and authenticity, fostering trust among prospective students.TikTok as a Recruitment Tool TikTok played a pivotal role in Mikki's strategy. Starting the university's account in 2019, her team grew it from an underutilized platform to the most-followed account within a year. By creating playful, tongue-in-cheek content, they broke through the noise and raised awareness of the university—even in its local community.Mikki shared how TikTok evolved from a discovery platform to a search engine. Early in the recruitment cycle, her team worked with student influencers who had large followings to generate awareness. As TikTok shifted to a search-first platform, they partnered with students who had smaller audiences to create content that addressed specific prospective student concerns, such as accommodations and campus life.Building a Social Media Funnel One of the episode's standout moments was Mikki's explanation of the recruitment funnel and how social media fits into it. She described creating content tailored to each stage:Awareness Stage: Share general information about the university, location, and events to attract prospective students. Success metrics here include reach and impressions.Conversion Stage: Focus on personalized content, such as Q&A sessions and campus tours, to address specific concerns and keep prospective students engaged. Metrics for this stage include comments, direct messages, and content shares.Mikki also emphasized the importance of social listening—using hashtags and search terms like university nicknames—to understand what content students are already creating and searching for. By consistently revisiting these insights each year, institutions can adapt their strategies to evolving student needs.Sustaining Work-Life Balance as a Social Media Manager Mikki ended the conversation with an important confession: she deleted LinkedIn from her phone over the holidays and hasn't reinstalled it since. As a social media professional, she understands the risks of burnout and advocates for intentional breaks from work-related platforms. Her advice: don't be afraid to temporarily delete social apps or establish boundaries to maintain a healthy balance.Guest Name: Mikki Collins, Content and Experience Designer, Pickle Jar CommunicationsGuest Social: LinkedInGuest Bio: Mikki Collins is the Content and Experience Designer at Pickle Jar Communications and has a strong social media background in the Higher Education sector and proven award-winning experience for digital content campaigns and projects she has produced. She previously worked for the University of Chichester as their Digital Content Producer for 5.5 years. In that time, Chichester achieved the number 1 ranked UK University on TikTok in 2022 and 2023, and the Champion of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in content at the ContentEd awards for the final series of the University's podcast all about minority groups. She has presented at different national and international education conferences for her TikTok framework, award-winning podcast series and turning digital student ambassadors into influencers organised by groups such as UUK, UniBuddy and Times Higher Education. - - - -Connect With Our Host:Jenny Li Fowlerhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/jennylifowler/https://twitter.com/TheJennyLiAbout The Enrollify Podcast Network:Confessions of a Higher Ed Social Media Manager is a part of the Enrollify Podcast Network. So, she built a podcast for the University of Chichester centered around authenticity and honesty. In the third series of the podcast, she wanted to feature true stories from her campus' minority and underrepresented groups, even when the stories weren't all positive. As a result, the university reached almost 10 times its student population on social, doubled the engagement from non-followers, and won a few awards, including the ContentEd Champion for DIversity, Equity and Inclusion Award in 2022 and the National Student Pride Inclusive University of the Year Award in 2023.Watch the Be You podcast series three episodes: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLMwhF7NaFQJxaE1X4LMUj7Y6Bq-cwRxEh&feature=sharedGuest Name: Mikki CollinsGuests Social Handle: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mikki-collins-36b631146/Guest Bio: Mikki is an award-winning Content and Experience Designer for Pickle Jar Communications. According to a report from the UN, sand is the second most exploited natural resource in the world after water. About 40-50 billion metric tons of it are used every year. Indonesia, as an archipelago, has an abundance of sand. These sand deposits vary in quality and are used to create industrial products like concrete, asphalt or glass. It is also used in construction and reclamation projects, such as the controversial Jakarta Bay project, where sand is laid as a foundation for further development. Indonesia's sand is even being exported to places like Singapore. But sand mining operations can also wreak havoc. Done without care, sand mining can cause coastal areas or even whole islands to disappear. Some fishing communities in Indonesia, for example, are at risk of losing their livelihoods as well as their cultures when sand mining operations are literally erasing their lands. In this episode of Talking Indonesia, Tito Ambyo from RMIT University talks to Febriana Firdaus, who is the managing editor of a global journalism organisation Environmental Reporting Collective and Krisna Pradipta, Digital Content Producer from Tempo Magazine. Febriana and Krisna have been a part of a global collaborative journalism project that looks at sand mining around the world called Beneath The Sands which uses a range of journalistic storytelling formats to convey the impacts of sand mining. In 2023, the Talking Indonesia podcast is co-hosted by Tito Ambyo from RMIT, Dr Jemma Purdey from Deakin University, Dr Elisabeth Kramer from UNSW and Dr Jacqui Baker from Murdoch University. Lavery and Sunshine take on three letters. First, from someone who is wondering how to support a grieving friend who is difficult to be around. https://www.linkedin.com/in/todd-hoyer-1469691/ (Todd Hoyer, Digital Content Producer) About the podcast: Unlocking Your World of Creativity Unlocking Your World of Creativity is a podcast hosted by best-selling author and global brand innovator, Mark Stinson. This is a podcast where diverse creative professionals from all over the world ttalk about how they get inspired, how they organize their ideas, and gain confidence to make the connections needed to launch their amazing work.  Our guest: Todd Hoyer Todd is a content producer in digital, animation, film, and video. Pretty much all kinds of mediums. And he has also worked in interactive games, trade shows, display branding, and the visuals needed to really tell stories.  Todd has been doing digital and video long before those words were even known to be digital. He told us about how he started back in college by cutting film and tape and then as soon as he got out of college, he was given a computer and digital non-linear editing system. He didn't know how to use it, but he was able to figure it out on his own and start his career from there.  His approach to structure and style  Todd has always been more interested in the editing side of things; he of course had to learn how to do a little bit of everything, from shooting to audio. But editing was always what held his interest. He says that when it comes to putting a story together through editing, sometimes there's a plan and other times it is just a matter of staring at the footage for a day, reflecting on it, and then working the next morning into building that story that you created in your mind.  Todd talks about how it is very important to be able to visually tell a story in a compelling way. And editing is a major component in that, for which, there are certain techniques that you can use to achieve your goals.  He summarizes his latest technique into listening and absorbing the information presented and experimenting with ideas before turning them into complete compelling stories.  The Todd Hoyer Style  For Todd, each project is different so no matter what genre or industry, whether it is healthcare film or training film, he feels the same excitement facing each one of the new creativity challenges. One of his favorite projects was a food safety training video that he spent nine months working on. It took him across the country and he got to meet a lot of interesting people.  The production and post-production also proved to be interestingly challenging because they dealt with translations into other languages, different cuts for the Asian market. But in general, it was a very complex project in which Todd got to explore his knowledge and abilities to a great extend to face the challenges and deliver an amazing piece His current project Todd is currently working on a mini-documentary series called Salsabrate. The brand is called Fresh Cravings and the campaign for 2021 is called “Salsabrate the Good.” They are giving $5,000 to 50 charities and they are making episodes telling their stories and releasing those stories to all of their social media channels, Youtube, Instagram, TikTok. Making Tiktoks also proved to be a new challenge for Todd as he had to adapt to a new form of storytelling that is more brief. Salsabrate is a year-long campaign where they will be releasing new episodes each week.  Each charity has its own story, so telling that story changes the way he has to approach the editing. There isn't a formula to follow. Another very important component to creating this type of content is making sure they hit the most engagement in the social marketplace. If you're interested in following Todd and learning more about his projects you can contact him through his LinkedIn profile, https://www.linkedin.com/in/todd-hoyer-1469691/ (Todd Hoyer). My guest on this episode of Nobody’s Safe w/Brady Laber is Rick Broering who is the radio analyst for NKU basketball, publisher for Musketeer Report and Digital Content Producer at Local 12 in Cincinnati. Rick knew from a young age that he wanted to maximize his love of sports by eventually becoming a college basketball play-by-play broadcaster. He talks about using a tape recorder to practice calling games starting when he was 11 years old. Rick talks about growing up in Northern Kentucky and attending Holy Cross High School which is located in the Latonia section of Covington. We talk about some of the influential coaches and teachers that he encountered and learned from at Holy Cross. After briefly flirting with the idea of playing college baseball, Rick decides instead to attend Northern Kentucky University and major in Radio/TV. Rick ended up graduating from NKU with a double major that included journalism. We talked about the professors that we both learned from during our time at NKU including Mary Cupito, Brad King and Wes Akers. Speaking of Wes Akers, the two of us recall getting the chance to receive hands-on experience thanks to him and Bill Farro running a student production that produced live NKU men’s and women’s basketball games. Rick runs through his extensive resume that includes quite a bit of work while he us still a college student. This includes doing internet play-by-play and running a website with his own blog the covering high school sports. One of Rick’s goals has been to do sports talk radio and he gets his chance working for a short-lived FM sports station in Cincinnati. That experience helped him gain experience to later be a guest on many different sports talk shows in the market. Rick eventually lands a position working on a rivals.com site that produces content to cover the Xavier men’s basketball program. He eventually becomes the publisher of the site that now known as MusketeerReport.com (https://247sports.com/college/xavier/) After a stint as the Kentucky preps beat writer at the Cincinnati Enquirer, Rick lands a full-time at Local 12 WKRC-TV as the digital content producer. This eventually leads to him teaming up with Richard Skinner and the two combine to work on the very popular “Skinny Podcast” that can be found on local12.com (https://local12.com/sports/the-skinny-podcast) In 2019, Rick is hired by Learfield Sports as an in-season replacement to be the new radio analyst for NKU men’s basketball. He is teamed with longtime play-by-play broadcaster Jim Kelch who Rick credits with teaching him to be make the transition as seamless as possible. Thursday, November 7, 2019 In 2018, the Hirshhorn Museum unveiled the Hirshhorn Eye, an in-museum mobile site that uses image recognition to let Hirshhorn visitors hear directly from artists. It won three first place awards and was described by the media as “a museum mobile guide that’s actually cool.” However, this marked the first step in an iterative and collaborative vision for furthering accessibility and increasing visitor engagement across the near-museum network. In 2019, with help from the Hirshhorn, the United States Diplomacy Center is adopting the technology for their exclusive primary source material. The technology is also expanding to the wider Smithsonian museum network. Panelists from Hirshhorn, the Diplomacy Center, and National Air and Space Museum, share three perspectives on the strategy, data insights and implementation of this technology. Session Type60-Minute Session (Professional Forum or Hands-on Demonstration) TrackSystems Chatham House RuleNo Key Outcomes After attending this session, participants will gain insight in evaluating and utilizing technology to deepen and widen physical exhibits. Participants interested in acquiring this technology or something similar will walk away with a roadmap to adoption. They will understand expectations and criteria for implementing this technology. All participants will gain data-driven insight for in-museum mobile sites, testing models, and an overview of related technology, such as real time imaging. There will also be applicable marketing takeaways. I had so much fun with my next guest, Clayton Taylor. He currently holds the position of Digital Content Producer at Bell Media in Toronto. He's also hilarious, animated (you'll have to take my word for it), and his brain holds more musical knowledge than anyone I know. I first met Clayton 12 years ago when I took a job at HMV ... you know, when CDs were still a thing. He was quick to take me in and show me the ropes of working in a record store, though I don't think we truly bonded until I awkwardly knocked over an entire display of chocolate oranges in the mall we worked in. In this episode, Clayton and I discuss the good and bad of social media, whether or not he believes he was made for his job, the common trait he has discovered among successful artists, what happened when he got the chance to interview his favourite band, and a lesson he learned at 17 that he'll never forget. I have to ask in advance for your forgiveness on the audio. This was one of the first in-person interviews I recorded and that came with a bit of an equipment malfunction. We had a headset that caused some noise on one of the microphones, but I wasn't about to hold back from publishing this interview because of it! I should also note that this is the last episode I'll be publishing until after New Year's Day. I hope all of you have a wonderful break. And for those of you who struggle through the Holidays, for whatever reason, I want you to know you are not alone. I will be available from 2-4pm PST on Christmas Day to talk if you need to. Send me a message on Instagram if you want to connect :) I hope you enjoy this episode!
