Original Release Date: Monday 22 June 2026 Description: There are two Carolinas in the USA. North and South. Phil is exploring both of them. So, this week's show was pre-recorded quite a few days earlier than usual. In it, Dean and Phil discuss The Actor's Gang, a well-respected theater company and training ground for talented performers (like their pal, Steve Benaquist). Dean and Phil continue to talk about the late, great artist David Hockney, his love of smoking, and the ways in which he taught the world to think of Los Angeles, namely as it pertains to light. Light and its interplay with shadows is absolutely top of mind for your friends in podcasting and they go deep into film noir, talking about such great actors as George Raft, Humphrey Bogart, Burt Lancaster, Edmond O'Brien, and Edward G. Robinson, and such great directors of noir as Fritz Lang and Robert Siodmak. The movies They Drive by Night, The Killers and Scarlet Street all get appraised. Finally, Phil holds court about the 1980 neo-noir The First Deadly Sin, which was the final motion picture produced by Frank Sinatra, and the final lead performance for Sinatra as an actor. It was supposed to have been directed by Roman Polanski, which has Phil asking, “What if it had been?” He also suggests another young director (at the time) who would have been a better choice than the film's eventual director, Brian G. Hutton. Nevertheless, Hutton did director a couple of Dean's favorite movies, so Phil shares the quite interesting details of Hutton's career.

Apollo 111 Fly Me to the Moon耗时用心整理的音乐深度赏析来啦!
什么类型?MC:兔子 49Guest:小殷(殷文玉),五星体育/咪咕体育NBA解说嘉宾songlist:《New York,New York》by Frank Sinatra&Tony Bennett

Russ is on load management so we have very special guest, Magic Mike 69 to talk about Frank Sinatra, his phrasing, and the first concept album ever. It's basically like when adult stars have sex with their fans except it would be like our fans are better at having sex on camera. Think about it. We talk what (not) to say to your daughter's prom dates, adult social anxiety, Beck being on tour, and Mike's piano journey. Then we get into old blue eyes as he pretends to be sad (we know the reason he is not) and then we have two seperate lists! Don't be like cave divers and just stop and give up! Down load this ep (which you did if you are reading this.) Next week Big Star and Three/ Sister Lovers.
Singer, pianist and composer Patrick Hogan, who will be performing with The Patrick Hogan Trio at Maxan Jazz June 21, shares the remarkable story of how his love affair with jazz began practically in the cradle, listening to Frank Sinatra's iconic recording of “In The Wee Small Hours.” Patrick discusses the enduring appeal and poetic depth of the Great American Songbook and explains why its timeless themes continue to resonate across generations. He also reveals an unexpected ally in preserving classic music—TikTok—and how social media is introducing younger audiences to songs that have stood the test of time. The conversation explores Patrick's upbringing in a home filled with jazz, his decision to begin piano lessons at age 10, and his passion for small-group instrumental jazz. He explains why Nelson Riddle's arrangement of “I've Got You Under My Skin” remains his favorite recording and why he never tires of listening to it. Patrick also talks about studying writing at UNLV, how storytelling influences his music, and how he balances beloved jazz standards with his own original compositions during live performances. It's a fascinating look at the artistry, craftsmanship and enduring power of jazz from one of Las Vegas' most talented musicians. (Also Watch Full Podcast Video)

Croon•er (n) ['kru:nər]: a singer, particularly a male one, who sings sentimental songs in a soft, low voice. Decades before Elvis, The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Justin Bieber, or Uncle Gregg captured the hearts, imaginations, and undergarments of a swooning audience, crooners ruled the earth. The term typically conjures up golden throated singers like Bing Crosby, Nat "King" Cole, Tony Bennett, and Mel Torme interpreting the timeless songs of Jerome Kern, Johnny Mercer, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, and Irving Berlin. But one crooner reigned supreme: Ol' Blue Eyes himself, Frank Sinatra. He was "The Voice," possessing an instrument of rare, pure, crystalline perfection, with a phrasing, tone, and ability to charge every word with such emotion that you can palpably sense his audience getting weak in the knees. Never has Sinatra's legendary 1940s performing career sounded as immaculately and pristinely alive as it does on the SING label's recent archival projects: At the Hollywood Bowl 1943-48; Christmas on the Air; and the 5-LP box set Long Ago, Far Away, all lovingly restored and mastered by an award winning team and featuring exquisitely detailed liner notes by no greater authority than record producer, historian, archivist, author of the acclaimed Sessions with Sinatra, and host of the weekly radio show Sinatra Standard Time, Chuck Granata. We are fortunate to have Chuck join us this week to chat about all things Sinatra: the innovative new sets, his important role in pop music's breakthrough, his classic and most underrated albums, and the use of AI for good. And, of course, because O3L is focused on classic alternative music, our lists cover some of our favorite singers who carried on crooning into the '70s, '80s & '90s. Learn more about your ad choices. *** This is a Dutch podcast, but from minute 6 on, the conversation is in English. Elke president nadien is zo hun opvolger. The American Presidency: Origins and Development, 1776-2025. This week, we bring in our sports guy Jeff Grayson along with professional opera singer Mark Schowalter to celebrate the "Voice of the Century," Mr. Frank Sinatra. “He didn't just say it, he meant it, he felt it — and the combination of the power guy, the ruthless power guy, and the profound idealist was fascinating, and also hard for him.” — Evan Thomas on Bobby Kennedy Who was the greatest riddle in 20th century American political life? Judging from the ever-expanding library of Bobby biographies, Robert Francis Kennedy ranks very high on that list. Indeed, according to Evan Thomas, one of RFK's most acclaimed biographers, this third Kennedy son is, indeed, the most sphinx-like riddle in 20th century America. In his classic 2000 biography, Robert Kennedy: His Life, Thomas unravels the good and the bad Bobby. But, rather than presenting parallel narratives, his portrait treats the Machiavellian and the idealist as the same riddle. Raised by his father to exercise raw power, RFK discovered that mid-century America wasn't living up to its own ideals. The contradiction of the ruthless Kennedy machine politician and the profound idealist was what continues to make him so intriguing to Americans of every political stripe. Bobby concurred with Churchill's dictum that courage is the greatest virtue because, without it, you can't have the other virtues. So he lived a life of ridiculous physical and moral courage — taking insane risks that would terrify ordinary mortals. And, of course, his most insanely courageous act was his last — running for President in 1968 knowing that he was likely to be assassinated. Where have you gone, Bobby Kennedy? A nation turns its lonely eyes to you. Five Takeaways • The Central Paradox: Power Guy and Idealist in the Same Man: Bobby Kennedy was raised by his father to be the henchman of the Kennedy machine — doing the dirty stuff in Boston politics to keep Jack floating free and grand. He was pretty ruthless about it. At the same time, in mid-century America, he discovered that the country was not living up to its own constitution, and he wanted to make things right, and genuinely felt it. The combination of the machine politician and the profound idealist was what made him so endlessly fascinating. It also made him hard for himself: a man permanently at war with his own nature. • Courage: The Only Word That Mattered: No word was more important to Bobby Kennedy than courage. Churchill: it's the greatest virtue, because without it you can't have the others. Kennedy believed in physical courage, emotional courage, mental courage. He was a runty little kid at the wrong end of the dinner table — Jack and Joe and Kick at the golden end with the father, Bobby with the nuns and the mum. He got kicked out of prep school for cheating. He was not the athlete, not the golden one. Real courage comes from suffering. It took courage just to overcome being the loser. That was the source. • Making Up for Missing the War: Physical and Moral Courage: Bobby missed World War Two, basically. He got in at the very end and ended up scraping the deck of a destroyer in the Caribbean, far from combat. His brother Jack is a war hero on steroids — PT boat cut in half by a Japanese destroyer, rescues his men, written about in The New Yorker and Reader's Digest. Joe volunteers for a secret dangerous mission to replicate Jack's glory and dies. Pretty high bar of courage. Bobby spends the rest of his life making up for it — swimming the Colorado River, climbing Mount Kennedy in the Yukon, jumping overboard off the coast of Maine to save Jack's jacket. Sometimes stunts. But increasingly, moral courage — which is the greater thing. • The Mob, Joe Kennedy, and the Beehive: When Bobby starts poking around in the mob as a Senate aide, J. Edgar Hoover is only too happy to point out: keep going here, you know where it's going to end up. With Joe Kennedy. Bobby's investigation of Giancana and Frank Sinatra starts grazing against his own father. Thomas's reading: whether conscious or unconscious, there is an element of rebellion. Bobby, appointed henchman, doing the dirty stuff for pop, resenting it, starts poking the beehive that might expose him. It never fully landed. But it started. And Hoover used it to blackmail the Kennedys. • The Ripple of Hope, and RFK Jr. as Tragedy: Bobby's trip to South Africa — apartheid everywhere, the freedom movement barely existing, everybody in prison. His speech: every time somebody does something brave or heroic, it causes a ripple, and that gives you hope. A young Margaret Marshall, later Chief Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, was in the audience. He gave us hope where there was none. That is the ghost Andrew went looking for at Hickory Hill and didn't find. The contrast with RFK Jr. is, for Thomas, simply sad. Poignant. His own family has disavowed him. Caroline Kennedy made a broadcast accusing him of crimes. The idea of Robert Kennedy Jr. is tragic. About the Guest Evan Thomas is an American writer and historian. He was Washington bureau chief of Newsweek for ten years and a writer and editor there for thirty-three years. He is the author of ten books, including Robert Kennedy: His Life (Simon & Schuster, 2000), Being Nixon, Road to Surrender, and, with Walter Isaacson, The Wise Men. He has taught at Harvard and Princeton. His biography of Churchill is forthcoming from Simon & Schuster in December 2026. References: • Robert Kennedy: His Life by Evan Thomas (Simon & Schuster, 2000). • The Wise Men by Evan Thomas and Walter Isaacson (Simon & Schuster, 1986) — referenced in the closing. • Robert Coles — Bobby Kennedy's psychologist friend, referenced in the conversation. • Hickory Hill, McLean, Virginia — the Kennedy family home Andrew visited on this trip to Washington DC. • Bobby Kennedy's “Ripple of Hope” speech, University of Cape Town, South Africa, June 6, 1966. EPISODE 142 - “LUCILLE BREMER: CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH” - 6/01/2026 One of those fascinating “what happened to her?” MGM stories is LUCILLE BREMER. Bremer was an elegant redheaded dancer who MGM clearly thought was going to be their next big musical star after ELEANOR POWELL had stepped away. She had the glamour, the dancing ability, the carriage… she looked like she belonged in Technicolor. However, her career lasted only a few short years, and during that time, she worked with visionary talents like VINCENTE MINNELLI and ARTHUR FREED. She danced with FRED ASTAIRE at the absolute height of his artistry. She appeared in Technicolor spectacles that later generations would rediscover and celebrate. She shone so brightly in films during the 1940s, but then, like a shooting star in the night sky, she just vanished. So just what happened to this talented actress? We'll find out as we honor LUCILLE BREMER as our June Star of the Month. SHOW NOTES: Sources: “Actress Lucille Bremer: From Broadway Lights to La Jolla Shores,” January 17, 2025, by Debbie L. Friends, this was such a popular episode I felt like it needed a second go-round, giving you all another chance to tell YOUR friends. Please enjoy and spread the word.--------------------------------------------What happens when Indiana's podcasting community calls in with their most burning questions? You get one of the most candid, heartfelt, and surprisingly fun episodes of The Space In-Between yet. In this special call-in episode, I opened my mic to fellow Indiana-based podcast hosts — and what followed was a genuine, wide-ranging conversation that gave my listeners a chance to know me a little better. From self-care rituals and music that heals, to the great New York City vs. Indianapolis debate, to my very real feelings about Juan Soto leaving the Yankees — we covered it all. Kelly Young of the Badass Free Life Podcast kicked things off by asking about self-care, a question that I think we all need to sit with more often. I talked through the five pillars I try to live by — physical health, mental health, emotional health, social connection, and self-love — and was honest about the things I'm still working on, like sleep. I also shared something I've come to believe deeply: being your own best promoter isn't arrogance. It's survival. It's healing. It's how you stop letting someone else's narrative define you.Nate Spangel from the Get In Podcast asked me about the differences — and surprising similarities — between New York City and Indianapolis. Spoiler: local pride runs just as deep in Indiana as it does in the five boroughs, and this New York girl has become a diehard Indiana Fever fan.The women of Book Talk Trio wanted to know what I'd want in a book podcast — and as a widow, an attorney, a baseball lover, and someone who has walked through grief, I had a lot to say. The Mosaics Podcast's Nick shared a beautiful reflection on what it means to make your guests shine, and it sparked a real conversation about the intentionality behind every single episode of this show. Amy Kandra from Kitchen Chat asked about my pre-show rituals and got me thinking about new ways to welcome guests into the space. Josh Gillespie from Voices of Indy asked about music — and I could have talked about Billy Joel, Frank Sinatra, and Eminem for another hour. And yes — Chewy from the League Mates asked about fantasy football team names and Juan Soto. I have opinions. Strong ones. This episode is a little lighter, a little playful, and a lot real. That's the space in between, friends — even the funny questions hold something worth looking at.Key Takeaways:True self-care covers five dimensions: physical health, mental health, emotional health, social connection, and self-compassion — and all five require intentional practice.Becoming your own best friend and biggest promoter is one of the most powerful things you can do, especially after someone else has tried to define your narrative.Music can serve as a bridge from darkness to light — whether that's Billy Joel's balance of melancholy and hope, Frank Sinatra's old-school resilience, or Eminem's relentless fire.Strong local pride and community connection show up in both New York City and Indianapolis — just in different flavors.Great podcast guests deserve a judgment-free zone, intentional preparation, and the chance to walk away feeling like their story mattered.Featured Indiana Podcasters:Badassery Life Podcast — Kelly YoungGet In. If you go looking for songs about the moon, they'll start falling out of the sky. Moon-themed songs are some of the oldest in recorded history as well as some of the most recent to hit the charts. They can be found connected to everything from organized religion to witchcraft, they come from all parts of the planet, and they show up in every genre of music. In honor of the 2026 blue moon, the hosts of "How We Heard It" embarked on a quest to find songs about the moon, and they were overwhelmed - not just by the sheer number of songs they found, but also by the extensive breadth of the songs. Earth's closest companion inspires all manner of emotions. And when you project your feelings on the moon, it reflects and enhances your mood. Are you feeling amorous? Lonely? Anxious? Content? Mysterious? Grounded? Gaze upon the moon and your feelings will intensify. In song, the moon can be blue, red, pink, silver and orange. It can be full, new, half ... or just a sliver. The phases of the moon can reflect the phases of life. Or the moon can just be an old goose. As the podcast's hosts discovered, the moon can be whatever you want it to be. And it seems like most artists have performed at least one song about the moon - from Frank Sinatra to Audrey Hepburn, from Elvis Presley to Creedence Clearwater Revival, from Van Morrison to Neil Young, and from Bjork to Bruno Mars. Just be careful with how hard you dig into moon-themed songs ... or you may end up seeing stars.

Bill Maher welcomes legendary singer-songwriter Paul Anka for a conversation packed with stories that sound almost too wild to be true. From helping bring The Beatles to America before Beatlemania exploded, to partying with the Rat Pack in steam rooms full of Vegas showgirls, to learning of JFK's assassination while performing behind the Iron Curtain in communist Poland, Anka has lived a life that reads like historical fiction. But this isn't just Hollywood lore and old Vegas chaos. Bill and Paul dig into the craft of songwriting: why the simplest melodies last forever, what made Frank Sinatra both magnetic and impossible, and how Barry White could seduce a room with a single note. Anka also opens up about reinventing himself with his cult-classic Rock Swings album, surviving massive cultural shifts across generations, and why true artists never stop evolving. In 1944, as World War II was drawing to a close, the Mexican love song Besame Mucho crossed the Atlantic and became one of the most recognisable melodies of the post-war era. Its lyrics were daring for the time: an open plea for a passionate kiss. The song had been written years earlier by Consuelo Velazquez, a young woman who composed romantic melodies for pleasure but kept her authorship a secret, fearing it could damage her career as a classical pianist. When Consuelo's secret got out, her song Bésame Mucho topped the charts in the US and became one of the most covered songs in Spanish, with versions by The Beatles, Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra.Stefania Gozzer speaks to her son, Mariano Rivera Velazquez, about his mother's unexpected worldwide success.Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. “THE GARDEN OF ALLAH: COCKTAILS, SCANDALS & MISCHIEF” - 5/25/2026 (141) Once upon a time, there was a magical, decadent hotel in Hollywood where stars could avoid the scrutiny of the public and studio executives and really let their hair down. And, boy, did they! It was a place where there were no rules, there was a party every night, and the rich and famous could frolic carelessly around the pool - and sometimes in the pool, fully dressed. This magical place was the Garden of Allah — the brainchild of actress ALLA NAZIMOVA. This week, we will discuss the magic, the mystery, the decadence, and the debauchery of one of Hollywood's most famous hotels. RUNDOWN Mitch and Hotshot Scott open Episode 383 by marveling at the bizarre obsession surrounding the NFL schedule release, questioning why fans and media treat dates and kickoff times like breaking world events. And then, they break down the Seahawks' newly released schedule, from the bizarre Rams clustering and overloaded prime time slate to the brutal late-season stretch loaded with short weeks and playoff-caliber opponents. The conversation turns into a bigger NFC West discussion, with Mitch quietly predicting San Francisco wins the division while Seattle lands at 11–6 and grabs a wild card spot. Mitch, Brady, and Joe dissect a Mariners club that suddenly looks lifeless after another ugly series loss to San Diego, with injuries piling up and the offense disappearing again. The conversation centers on whether Colt Emerson's promotion can inject energy into a flat clubhouse, why Seattle's veteran-heavy roster may lack emotional spark, and whether the AL West being mediocre is the only thing keeping the season afloat right now. Mitch and Puck bounce from petty website slights and Tiger Woods speculation into a spirited debate over Cal Raleigh playing hurt and the Mariners' late-game strategy. The real fireworks come when Mitch unveils his theory that the NFL intentionally put Mike Vrabel and the Patriots in a primetime opener against Seattle.
