The Battle To Keep Inclusion on the Organizational Agenda. Is Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (D.E.I.) under existential threat? With political shifts and corporate cutbacks, is this the end of D.E.I. as we know it—or just a moment of transformation? In this episode, John Helmer speaks with Amri B. Johnson, author of Reconstructing Inclusion and CEO of Inclusion Wins, about the evolving landscape of D.E.I. in the workplace. They discuss whether D.E.I. is fundamentally flawed, if it will persist under different branding, and how organizations should adapt to changing times. Exploring Appalachia's Culture and Countering Stereotypes Through Podcasting In this episode, John Helmer is joined by Brigid McCormack, podcast producer and researcher, to discuss her study on podcasting in the Appalachian region of the United States. Brigid shares how local podcasters in this culturally rich yet often stereotyped region are using the medium to tell authentic stories and challenge long-standing negative narratives. She also touches on the power of oral storytelling and podcasting as a learning medium and reflects on her role at Assemble You. For her research, McCormack focused on four podcasts created by five podcasters from the Appalachian region: Appodlachia by Chuck Corra: A podcast that takes a critical look at politics and economics in Appalachia, often addressing current issues and challenging stereotypes. What's Appalachian? by Gabe and Cody: A more casual, conversational podcast where the hosts discuss their daily lives, providing an authentic glimpse into contemporary Appalachian experiences. Does the way we talk about learning improve our understanding – or hold it back? The language of learning is charged with resonant abstract nouns that mobilize professionals around new ideas and concepts. But are these concepts really so new in all cases – and do they provide a focus for practical action? To what extent is the debate driven by the commercial imperatives of Learntech vendors rather than the real needs of employees and students? Welcome to the 100th episode of The Art & Science of Learning podcast in which we are celebrating this major milestone. What an incredibly rewarding and enjoyable journey it has been, I learned a lot and met many fascinating people. I not only learned how to create a podcast from scratch, but I also learned so much from the many guests I interviewed from around the world. In this special episode, I am speaking with two learning professionals and podcasters whom I admire. They both have very successful podcasts on learning that have gone far beyond 100 episodes. We discuss how they started their podcast, what inspired them, what they learned along the way, and what they are excited about in the field of learning. Prof. Chris Dede was the Timothy E. Wirth Professor in Learning Technologies at the Harvard Graduate School of Education for 22 years and currently, he is Senior Research Fellow. Chris is also the co-founder of the Silver Lining for Learning podcast and initiative. His fundamental interest is developing new types of educational systems to meet the opportunities and challenges of the 21st century. His research spans emerging technologies for learning, infusing technology into large-scale educational improvement initiatives, developing policies that support educational transformation, and providing leadership in educational innovation. Currently, Chris is a Co-Principal Investigator of the NSF-funded National Artificial Intelligence Institute in Adult Learning and Online Education. Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded October 28th and 29th, 2023 Having watched the incremental disintegration of Western Civilizations, such as it was, over the last forty and something years, it still comes as a surprise to witness the depravity, viciousness, and yes, banality of the evil now run rampant. And this is without regarding the unspeakable Israel - enacting a literal genocide even now, every moment - but the revelation of the West's moral bankruptcy Israel's ultimate crime illustrates. Certainly the blame for the killing of Gaza is on the governments and institutions of America, Europe, the NATO nations - Canada, the rest of the Anglo-American Alliance, and their satraps around the World - but the blood of innocents stains our hands too; we the people who allowed this happen, and allow it continue. So, now what are you and I and we to do? Dimitri Lascaris is a Montreal-based activist, journalist, and lawyer. He served as Justice Critic in the Shadow Cabinet of the Green Party of Canada and likewise for the Green Party of Quebec. Dimitri's interviews for TRNN are at TheRealNews.com. Dimitri's articles appear at various sites online and at his website, DimitriLascaris.org, where I found his latest piece, 'If We Have Any Honour, We Will Defend the Palestinian People'. Dimitri Lascaris in the first half. And; is there method in this madness? Was the ruthless destruction of decency and the foundational principles of the West, and presumably Israel, the intention of the current onslaught in Gaza, (and increasingly underscored by the marauding bands of murderous "settlers" in the West Bank)? Or has it all just gotten away from the perennial felon, prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, originally hoping perhaps just for a distraction from the determined - and massive - demonstrations against his government? Whither Israel then, and where does the disaster it has wrought for Palestine's people lead it now? John Helmer is a journalist and author who's spent decades living in and reporting from Russia. Principle behind the web news site, Dances with Bears, Helmer has too been a professor of political science, sociology, and journalism, and served as advisor to governments at the highest levels. Among his many book titles are: ‘Skripal in Prison,' ‘The Man Who Knows Too Much About Russia,' ‘The Jackals' Wedding: American Power, Arab Revolt', ‘The Lie That Shot Down MH-17', and his latest, ‘SOVCOMPLOT: How Pirates Tried to Capture the Treasure of the Russian Seas, and Were Caught Out'. John's latest article at Dances with Bears examines the question of what becomes of "the only democracy in the Middle East" now that its long-promised war is begun. John Helmer and 'THE GODS ARE GOING AGAINST THE CHOSEN PEOPLE — MAMMON AGAINST ISRAEL, MARS AGAINST THE PENTAGON' in the second half. But first, Dimitri Lascaris and the great unraveling beginning in the navel of the World. Chris Cook hosts Gorilla Radio, broad/webcasting since 1999. HEADLINE: Biden's Surreal and Secretive Journey Into a War Zone by Peter Baker This is an unprecedented thing that has happened here. $300 million was loaned to fund the Bolshevik revolution. In the 100 years since, not ONE President has asked for a safe passage treaty! Do you all remember the video of President Biden being greeted by Zelensky then the air raid siren going off? WHY did the sirens go off if there was a peace agreement w/ Putin while Biden was there? This is just incredible what is happening here. Our MSM took the line that Biden made a surprise visit to Ukraine right? Well how can this be true if it took 1 week to get Putin to sign this agreement? The two cannot be correct. HEADLINE: PRESIDENT VLADIMIR PUTIN SIGNED SAFE CONDUCT FOR PRESIDENT JOSEPH BIDEN, ONE RETURN PRZEMYSL RAIL PASS, 24-HOUR LEAVE PASS FOR KIEV, IN “COVERT” MISSION TO FOOL NEW YORK TIMES, LONDON TIMES, FINANCIAL TIMES (AND IT DID) by John Helmer
Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded February 19th, 2023. On February 8th of this year, Dutch police presented new evidence to the District Court of The Hague regarding the July 17th, 2014 downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17. Upon entering their evidence, the Dutch government and an Australian investigator on the case admitted to having held American military satellite images from the court, the press, and defence lawyers throughout the two-year trial for the wrongful deaths of the two hundred and ninety-eight people who perished aboard that ill-fated flight. Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded January 22, 2023 Approaching the first anniversary of Russia's "Special Operations" in the Donbass region of Ukraine prospects for Russia's proposed ceasefire are tremulous, and the chance of peace breaking out soon remote. The problem for those seeking an end to the killing is, as ever, finding willing partners on both sides of the conflict. For now, Ukraine's backers in the United States and the NATO countries seem content to allow the war continue, sapping Russia's political and economic resources while providing a lucrative market for their weapons-making industries. But, and it is an enormous one, elements within Germany's uber military echelons are pushing America to put an end to its project in Ukraine - before it's too late! John's recent article at Dances with Bears, ‘GERMAN GENERAL TELLS U.S. GENERALS TO LOSE THE UKRAINE WAR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE TO PREVENT LOSING THE EMPIRE IN EUROPE‘ reveals Germany's evolving position on the Ukraine conflict. Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded December 20th, 2022. "Fascism" has become, in the post-totalitarian west, a term traduced through overuse to the point of triteness. So much so, it begs questioning whether this trivialization is not done by some nefarious design than the more usual intellectual laziness of the purveyors of news and other so-called "information". But - and it is an enormous but - fascism did not die with Herr Hitler, its surviving spore has found purchase in the body politic of liberal democracies across the World; in some more readily than others. John Helmer, the self-titled "doyen" of the foreign press corps in Russia is principle of the web news site, Dances with Bears. He's a native-born Australian, educated there and at Harvard University in America. He's also a prolific author, some of whose titles include: ‘The Lie That Shot Down MH-17,' ‘Skripal in Prison,' ‘The Man Who Knows Too Much About Russia,' ‘The Jackals' Wedding: American Power, Arab Revolt', and his latest, just hours off the presses, 'Australian Fascism: How It Destroyed the Courts.' John Helmer is the host of two outstanding Learning & Development podcasts: The Learning Hack and Great Minds On Learning. In this episode, John condenses his insights and learning from the conversations he's led with Donald Clark about the people and approaches that have informed so much of the L&D profession. KEY TAKEAWAYS Experts tend to forget the gaps they had in their knowledge when they knew less, so tend to skip over things. It's a form of educated incapacity. A surprising amount of learning is unlearning some of the things that are almost instinctive to us. Learning and development professionals don't know or aren't aware of as much of learning theory and science as perhaps you'd expect. Our job as learning professionals, as special as any field, is to disentangle what is valuable about the new and not be scared of innovations. There is a tendency for the industry to repackage old approaches. That is only OK if it has been updated and tweaked to work in a modern setting. BEST MOMENTS' The expert has difficulty unpacking. So, my job is to help Donald unpack. ''How do you know that it works, and if you don't know that it works, does it work, and then do less of the stuff that you don't know works,'' There's a whole lot of counterintuitive stuff involved in learning, which is sort of something we talk about in the learning theory, that has to be to get around to make learning work. ''You should be ambitious for your profession. Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded October 1st and 2nd, 2022 And welcome too to what appears to be the end of the pretense of Canada, the sovereign state. If we're honest, like Peter Pan's Tinkerbell, that place existed ever only as an article of faith: It was because we believed it, it was so. But in its deeds these last years, it is increasingly difficult to maintain the fiction this place named Canada is anything more in fact than a placeholder for Greater America and its now nakedly evident Empire. Yves Engler is a prolific author, essayist, and political activist. Among his dozen books are ten detailing various myths of "Canada's" foreign policy past and present. His hundreds of articles on that and other matters of the moment appear across the internet and at his site, YvesEngler.com. Yves is too the host of the Canadian Foreign Policy Hour, a "weekly news roundup and interactive discussion about Canada's role abroad." It's a forum made possible by the new communications environment, one that allows the citizenry sidestep corporate and state news mediation. Yves Engler in the first half. And; things are changing so rapidly it's almost pointless to write now, two days before my second guest's interview, about the previously mentioned Empire's efforts to overthrow Russian leadership and usurp entirely the European economy. Just today, on September's last day, NATO is entertaining an expedited application to accept Ukraine into its fold; even as Russia announces the adoption of Western Ukrainian territories. These two actions, should NATO complete its part, automatically create a state of war between the NATO states and Russia - setting the stage for World War III. This all in the wake of the sabotage of Russia's Nord Stream I and II pipelines. John Helmer is a journalist, author, and principle behind the web news site, Dances with Bears. He's a past professor of political science, sociology, and journalism and has served as advisor to governments at the highest level. Helmer has spent decades living in and reporting from Russia, and among his many book titles are: ‘The Lie That Shot Down MH-17,' ‘Skripal in Prison,' ‘The Man Who Knows Too Much About Russia,' and his latest, ‘The Jackals' Wedding: American Power, Arab Revolt'. John Helmer and Aftershocks of the Nord Stream attacks as prelude to Armageddon in the second half. But first, Yves Engler and Canada's foreign-dictated foreign policy. Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded September 17th and 18th, 2022. This week past, the UN's International Atomic Energy Agency officially demanded Russia relinquish control of the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, or (ZNPP), and "all nuclear facilities within Ukraine's internationally recognized borders" into the hands of "competent Ukraine authorities". The Russian-held nuclear plant has been repeatedly shelled and was too the target of a Kiev commando-raid. The IAEA's investigation on the status of the plant, and now this report, are precedent-setting for the agency, but not a departure from the recent trend toward politicizing international agencies to serve the interests of America and NATO. John Helmer in the first half. And; even as the UN's IAEA and OPCW are co-opted against their mandates into the service of the war-state, so too countries big and small are strong-armed to bend their laws to suit the aims of the United States. Witness Great Britain's abandonment of the Magna Carta in the Assange case, or Canada's deplorable political arrest of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou and two-plus year torturing of logic and jurisprudence required to keep her imprisoned. What chance then do smaller countries like Sweden, or Iceland, or Cabo Verde have when their leadership receives a call from Uncle Sam? In the latter's case, that phone rang when Venezuelan diplomat and businessman, Alex Saab's plane landed for refueling in the tiny African nation, en route to Iran. Today, Saab languishes in an American prison cell for the crime of challenging imperial power. Roger D. Harris' long civil rights activism career encompasses the teaching political science at a Historical Black College in Mississippi in the 1960's and community organizing in East Harlem, New York City. Today, Roger's a Wildlife Biologist and conducts eco-tours with the Oceanic Society, but he still has an oar or two in the activist waters; sitting on the board of the human rights organization, Task Force on the Americas, and serving on the executive committee of the US Peace Council, among others. His political essays feature online at CounterPunch, Dissident Voice, Mint Press News, Popular Resistance, and at the Task Force on the Americas site, where I found his recent article, 'Possible Prisoner Exchange in US Hybrid War Against Venezuela'. Roger Harris and freeing Alex Saab in the second half. But first, John Helmer and the IAEA's use as an instrument of one party in conflict. Chris Cook hosts Gorilla Radio, airing since 1999; in Victoria at 101.9FM, and on the internet at: cfuv.ca. Check out the GR blog at: http://gorillaradioblog.blogspot.com/
Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded July 21st and 24th, 2022 Nearly seventy-seven years following the atomic annihilation of two cities, politicians in America and its NATO vassal states today are debating the strategic merits of a nuclear war with Russia, (and presumable China to follow). Absent the debate, naturally, is the moral question of both war and its necessary means. August 6th marks the grim anniversary of the destruction of Hiroshima by America - Nagasaki being unnecessarily destroyed three days later. In the years since, historians have proven neither attack was needed to bring Japan to the negotiating table; they had been attempting surrender for months before the bombs dropped. But as we learn, each time anew it seems, truth has little purchase for the warmongers. The tragic and senseless destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki will again be commemorated by the Victoria chapter of the Women in Black, who will stand silent vigil August 6th at the inner harbour. All are welcome to attend. Terry Wolfwood is Director and co-founder of the Barnard-Boecker Centre Foundation, at BBCF.ca. She's a writer, poet, photographer, and long-time activist in pursuit of peace, social justice, and women's rights. Her articles have appeared at Briarpatch, Peace News, and Third World Resurgence among other places. In conjunction with her many activities in support of justice and peace, Terry has served too as local coordinator for the Women in Black for many years. Terry Wolfwood in the first half. And; mere hours after signing an agreement allowing the safe passage of goods from Ukraine, an acknowledged Russian missile attack against the port of Odessa threatens to scotch the deal. Russia denies allegations made by Ukraine and western media it targeted grain silos in the port, instead saying a dry dock, warship under repair, and warehouse of American munitions were struck and destroyed. Meanwhile, Kiev's president Zelenskyy spent part of his day today playing host to US congressional reps, eager to pad their war-making resumes in anticipation of the Fall election. John Helmer is a journalist, author, and principle behind the web news site, Dances with Bears. He's a past scholar, and advisor to government at the highest level, and spent decades living in and reporting from Russia. His many book titles include: ‘The Lie That Shot Down MH-17, ‘Skripal in Prison,' ‘The Man Who Knows Too Much About Russia,' and his latest, ‘The Jackals' Wedding: American Power, Arab Revolt‘ is newly out. John Helmer and Ukraine's thickening fog in the second half. But first, Terry Wolfwood and remembering still Hiroshima/Nagasaki. Chris Cook hosts Gorilla Radio, airing since 1998; in Victoria at 101.9FM, and on the internet at: cfuv.ca. Check out the GR blog at: http://gorillaradioblog.blogspot.com/
Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded July 10th, 2022 Twenty-five hundred years or so ago, storied Chinese general and reputed author of The Art of War observed, "There is no instance of a nation benefiting from prolonged warfare." Today, twenty and some years into George Bush's "generational war", Sun Tzu's wise maxim seems to have eluded the modern masters of war. The NATO Alliance has spent the 21st Century hopscotching from country to country dealing death and destruction as it goes with the abandon of a malicious child on an ant hill, wantonly thumbing flat people, nations, and the very concept of International Law until. In 2022, we find ourselves on the threshold of another global war, one leading through Russia to a final confrontation with China. His recent article, 'The Coming Verdict in the MH17 Trial is Certain, and Double Dutch' reminds, NATO's determination for a war against Russia in Ukraine is a multi-layered operation, predating anything Russia has done. Today, John Helmer and Dutch courts doing double duty and NATO's media doing its damnedest to get and keep the war on Russia going. Chris Cook hosts Gorilla Radio, airing since 1998; in Victoria at 101.9FM, and on the internet at: cfuv.ca. Check out the GR blog at: http://gorillaradioblog.blogspot.com/
Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded May 7th and 8th, 2022. Though most Canadians don't know it they and their country are at war. And, it's not merely a war against "Putin's Russia" (started in response to the invasion of Ukraine). While it's true, Canada has been actively engaged in undermining Russia, it has not been doing so exclusively - at the same time it has in turn tried to undermine China, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Iran, Syria, and a host of other nations, (all conveniently catalogued for it by our friends and neighbours south). Only difference is, now the military aspect of Ottawa's international campaign of belligerence is glaringly apparent. Yves Engler is a Montréal-based activist, and author of 12 books, mostly on Canadian foreign policy, including his latest, ‘Stand on Guard For Whom? A People's History of the Canadian Military'. He's also a prolific essayist whose many articles appear at numerous sites online, including at his website, YvesEngler.com, where his recent articles have focused on Canada's growing involvement in the crisis in Ukraine, including 'Harper pushed conflict with Russia long before invasion.' Yves Engler in the first half. And; while investigations by Canada's Department of National Defense exonerate itself of allegedly training Nazi's to kill Russians in Ukraine, (and presumably elsewhere) none are disputing the fact Canada's government is not only training, but also supplying the successors of Kiev's coupsters with the materiel vital to accomplishing that. And they're not alone. But, what remains the burning question of the moment is, "Where's the voice of global peace in this: Where's the United Nations?" Last week, UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres made his organization's position clear - sort of - by not only refusing to censure Ukraine's military for intentionally hiding its forces behind human shields in Mariupol, but possibly too, as my second guest reports, committing a war crime by taking part in a scheme to use those civilians as cover in an attempt to extricate combatants from the besieged Azovstal steel plant. His recent article, 'Did UN Secretary-General Guterres Commit a War Crime at Azovstal?" John Helmer and crimes of commission and omission in Ukraine in the second half. But first, Yves Engler and Canada's long subterranean warmaking breaking cover. Chris Cook hosts Gorilla Radio broadcast on CFUV.ca. Check out the GR blog at: http://gorillaradioblog.blogspot.ca/

You are of course aware that we try and pull out the stops a bit when we get to a chapter with a nought in it, and for this landmark episode I think we have totally nailed it. I know Ant was a little nervous, and I have to admit a few flutters myself as we tried to keep up with our guest John Helmer, lyricist, musician, author, podcaster and all round impressive human being. Of course we needn't have worried, John was an absolute sweetheart and we reminisced with affection and warmth about our first meetings, and the way we slipped into a very easy working relationship that would, of course, prove very fruitful. John even arrived with a surprise up his sleeve, which closed the chapter out an absolute treat. Thanks John. John Helmer talks to Craig Weiss, the straight-talking learntech analyst and consultant. How do they deal with the law of unintended consequences, which can bedevil so many in positions of authority? Matthew, who has run many simulation training events with leaders in large companies around the world, gives a three-step framework for tough decisions in tight spots, and discusses how leaders are coping with the tough decisions confronting them in the global pandemic. 03:26 A three-step decision-making framework 07:00 Tips for fast decision-making 10:48 Premortems and snakes 12:58 Decision-making and the law of unintended consequences 15:36 Decision-making in the pandemic 21:26 Matthew's personal journey to leadership learning 24:07 Advice for leaders coming out of lockdown Matthew's Ted Talk: https://www.ted.com/talks/matthew_confer_before_you_decide_3_steps_to_better_decision_making Abiltie's website: https://www.abilitie.com/ Matthew's Podcast, Learning to Lead: https://www.abilitie.com/learn-to-lead-podcast/ Contact Matthew LinkedIn linkedin.com/in/matthewconfer Twitter @MatthewConfer Download the new white paper from Learning Pool written by John Helmer – 'Experience: Theory, design and supporting technologies for an experience-based learning culture' https://learningpool.com/theory-design-and-supporting-technologies-for-an-experience-based-learning-culture/ Contact John Helmer Twitter: @johnhelmer LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnhelmer/ Website: http://johnhelmerconsulting.com/
John Helmer talks to Jane Hart, Founder of the Centre for Learning & Performance Technologies (C4LPT), whose Top Tools for Learning list, now in its 12th year, rates the popularity of various technology tools under categories of personal learning, workplace learning and education. The list has consistently highlighted the importance of generic tools such as PowerPoint, Slack and YouTube for learning online, and how big a part informal learning plays in complementing course-based materials. As such it paints a very different picture of the world from that purveyed by learntech vendors and analysts. John asks what this year's list shows in terms of long-term trends, as well as, inevitably, the effect of the pandemic on how people are learning. 01:31 What does the list say about learners' response to Covid-19? 05:08 The 'sub-lists': personal learning, workplace learning and education 09:20 Is learning too 'fuzzy' a word? 14:31 Why do learntech vendors score so low in the lists? 20:18 Can some of learning not be productized? 26:51 How to balance self-directed learning with the needs of the business 29:14 The biggest problem facing L&D today? 32:04 What is Jane most excited about for the future? John Helmer talks to Myles Runham, a well respected learning consultant who has held senior leadership roles at the BBC and Ask.com, about the evolving role of L&D. Myles shares some evolving ideas about how the role should be reframed to reflect the changing realities of the digital age, moving from a focus on courses and projects to thinking like the manager of a natural ecosystem, where not everything can be tamed and controlled. This involves being hands-off in some areas and allowing elements of 'wildness' into the picture. The impact of Covid-19 is discussed, which has been beneficial in some respects, as well as potential blockers to overcome. 02:06 L&D as service management 05:42 L&D and the ecosystem 08:00 Relinquishing control 10:16 What's wrong with the current L&D role? 11:39 Managing stakeholder expectations 13:44 What new skills or hires might be needed? 15:49 The role of data 19:50 Examples 'in the wild' 25:04 Blockers 27:40 The opportunity offered by Covid 30:30 Rewilding L&D 36:35 Top tips for rewilding L&D Myles's website: https://mylesrunham.com/ Myles's Blog: mylesrun.wordpress.com/ Contact Myles LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/myles-runham Twitter: @mylesrun Download the new white paper from Learning Pool written by John Helmer – 'Experience: Theory, design and supporting technologies for an experience-based learning culture' https://learningpool.com/theory-design-and-supporting-technologies-for-an-experience-based-learning-culture/ Contact John Helmer Twitter: @johnhelmer LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnhelmer/ Website: http://johnhelmerconsulting.com/

Somewhere in Nazi-occupied Ukraine during WWII. From the personal files of Chrystia Freeland’s grandpa, Michael Chomiak. Courtesy of Alex Boykowich. For the first episode of Immigrants as a Weapon Radio, I talk to Alex Boykowich, who is one of the people responsible for surfacing information about Chrystia Freeland’s Nazi collaborator grandfather a few years ago.If you don’t know, Chrystia Freeland is Canada’s deputy prime minister. She has spent most of her career — first as a journalist, then as Canada’s powerful Foreign Minister, and now as as Deputy Prime Minister — praising her grandfather’s legacy and whitewashing his past. Alex’s find caused a minor political scandal in Canada — which was immediately blamed on Putin and Russian disinformation. But it definitely wasn’t Russian disinfo. Among other things, her grandpa ran a Ukrainian-language newspaper out of Nazi-occupied Krakow, Poland — a paper that praised Hitler, ran giant ads for Ukrainian SS recruitment, spread antisemitic propaganda, and pumped out vile garbage that helped justify the mass slaughter of Jews, Poles and Russians. The story was first reported by John Helmer and Telesur — based on information that Alex dug up in the archives. We talk about a bunch of things beyond just Chrystia Freeland and her Nazi collaborator grandpa. Among them, Alex gets into the little-known, sordid history of how Canada’s Ukrainian fascist-right waged a war against Canada’s much older and much larger Ukrainian left and progressive community — and did so with the full backing of the Canadian state. In short: Canada loves its Nazi collaborators! —Yasha Levine PS: If you haven’t already, read my previous letters on Chrystia Freeland’s Nazi family past and why it matters today: Chrystia Freeland and Canadian Nazi collabos — “Canada’s aggressive interventions in Ukraine and the former Soviet Union have a big domestic politics component. Many Ukrainian Canadians are still trying to redo World War II — the war that they lost.”Nazi collabo families and racist propaganda in the New York Times — “A Russophobic New York Times journalist married to Canada’s powerful Nazi-loving Deputy Prime Minister? It was a match made in heaven!” This is a public episode. Get access to private episodes at yasha.substack.com/subscribe

This week's Global Research News Hour sets its gaze on the challenges facing the Trudeau government domestically and in its relations with the Trump Administration. We first hear from Energy Analyst David Hughes, the author of a CCPA report on Canada's Energy Outlook. He tackles the economic and environmental viability of the Trudeau government's determined purchase of Kinder Morgan's Trans-Mountain pipeline, and suggests different priorities the government can explore. We next hear from political activist, author and organic farmer David Orchard about the tariffs the Trump administration is aiming at Canada and why Canada can and should abandon its obsession with saving NAFTA. Finally, Moscow based journalist John Helmer attempts to make sense of the Trump Administration's 'coordinated' attack on Prime Minister as the sun sets on the recent G7 meeting.
The downing of a Russian warplane over Syria is further proof, if any were still needed, that news of the end of the protracted war there is premature. It also underscores the changing nature of the conflict, and its turn in a dangerous new direction. It's been confirmed, Major Roman Filipov's Su-25 fighter was brought down by a MANPAD, or portable anti-aircraft missile system, reportedly fired by members of Jabhat al-Nusra. It's a sophisticated piece of equipment not easily gotten, so just where it came from, and how al-Nusra ended up with it are the burning questions of the moment. John Helmer is a long-time, Moscow-based journalist, author, and essayist whose website, Dances with Bears is the only Russian-based news bureau “independent of single national or commercial ties.” He's also a former political science professor who's served as an advisor to governments on three continents, and regularly lectures on Russian topics. Helmer's book titles include: ‘Uncovering Russia,' ‘Urbanman: The Psychology of Urban Survival,' ‘Bringing the War Home: The American Soldier in Vietnam and After,' and ‘Drugs and Minority Oppression', among others. John Helmer in the first half. And; the Victoria Film Festival continues this week through Sunday, when it will feature Canadian director, Stephen Campanelli's 'Indian Horse'. The full-length feature recently took the Calgary Film Festival's Audience Award for Narrative Feature, and was named the People's Choice winner at last year's Vancouver International Film Festival. It's an adaptation of the Richard Wagamese's widely acclaimed novel about Ojibway boy, Saul Indian Horse's abduction into Canada's residential school system. Campanelli is a long-time Hollywood camera operator, working within legendary actor/director and producer, Clint Eastwood's rarefied filmmaking circle. Among others, he's collaborated with Eastwood on the films: 'Million Dollar Baby'. 'Gran Torino', 'Sully', and their latest, and 21st collaboration, '15:17 to Paris'. Indian Horse is his second film in the director's chair, following 2015's 'Momentum'. Stephen Campanelli and breaking the tormented silence of Canada's residential school survivors. And; Victoria-based greentrepreneur and horticulturalist extraordinaire, Christina Nikolic will be here at the bottom of the hour with the Left Coast Events Bulletin bringing us up to speed with some of the good things going on in and around our town in the coming week. Zbigniew Brzezinski, counselor and trustee at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, professor of American foreign policy at the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University, and most famously National Security Adviser under US President Jimmy Carter passed away on Friday May 26th in a Falls Church, Virginia Hospital. He was 89. [2][3]Brzezinski, though hardly a household name, enjoyed an influence over international politics that few intellectuals outside elected office can hope to attain. In addition to his numerous academic treatises, and the role he played in the Carter administration, he was active in the secretive and influential Council on Foreign Relations and the Bilderberg Group. Additionally, he co-founded the Trilateral Commission with David Rockefeller.[4]As investigative journalist Daniel Estulin exposes in his 2009 book, The True Story of the Bilderberg Group, all of these bodies convene business and political leaders alongside select members of the press behind closed doors with the aim of undermining sovereign democracies and imposing a policy framework favouring a privileged few. Estulin’s analysis reveals that membership in one or more of these bodies functions as a kind of rite of passage for aspiring presidential candidates in both major US political parties. It could be posited therefore, that Brzezinski, given his influential role in these organizations, may be more powerful in a sense than elected presidents. [5]The application of Brzezinski’s theories on utilizing ethnic national struggles as a cudgel against the Soviet Union, was supportive in securing the collapse of the USSR. However, as he would concede in his later writings, this approach has proved to be a spectacular failure in terms of attaining what he called US “global primacy” on the world stage forcing a rethink of his earlier 90s era imperial framework.More importantly, Zbig’s strategy has left a trail of bloodshed and mayhem throughout Eurasia, extending into the Middle East, North Africa and even ‘coming home to roost’ in major American and European centres.Zbigniew Brzezinski is the author of several pivotal works, including Between Two Ages : America’s Role in the Technetronic Era (1970), The Grand Chessboard: American Primacy and its Geostrategic Imperatives (1997), and Strategic Vision: America and the Crisis of Global Power.Given the ultimate breadth of his influence, this week’s Global Research News Hour commemorates the passing of this controversial figure with an overview of his life and legacy, through the eyes of four observers. In the first half hour, writer, author and commentator Jay Dyer analyzes Brzezinski’s core beliefs and activities in the pre-Carter era, and the role of the Trilateral Commission in advancing his influence over Carter and successive presidential administrations. We later replay part of an October 2016 interview with Andrew Korybko, in which he described Brzezinski’s important role in the development of ‘hybrid warfare’ in the modern era. We get the perspective of John Helmer, who was a White House staffer in the Carter era. Finally, University of San Francisco Professor and scholar Filip Kovacevic examines the impacts of Brzezinski’s strategies in the post 9/11 era, his later rethink of the idea of “US Primacy,” and the prospects of neoconservative decision-makers in Washington following his lead.Jay Dyer is a contributor to 21st Century Wire and author of Esoteric Hollywood: Sex, Cults and Symbols in Film. He is a public speaker, lecturer and comedian, and has authored hundreds of articles. His website is jaysanalysis.comAndrew Korybko is a geopolitical analyst and an American commentator based in Moscow. He is the author of Hybrid Wars: The Indirect Adaptive Approach To Regime Change. He currently studies at the Moscow State University of International Relations and is a member of the expert council for the Institute of Strategic Studies and Predictions at the People’s Friendship University of Russia. He works for Sputnik.
