In today's episode of the Kevin and Fred Show, we're joined by Nashville agent and entrepreneur Charlie Madison. Charlie's business today is 100% past client and referral-based, and he works only 10 hours a week in it. He has an amazing lifestyle that includes travel and quality time with his family. Early on, Charlie made the decision that he wanted a peaceful, profitable real estate practice. He shares why going all in on relationships was the most natural path in business.    Charlie Madison is a real estate agent, and the founder of Referrals While You Sleep.   His purpose is to serve as a real estate consultant for his clients. He invests his time into consulting, negotiating, and organizing the details of a transaction. The purpose of Charlie's business is referrals. Charlie launched Referrals While You Sleep, an automated service that helps fellow agents stay top of mind with their sphere of influence.    The greatest challenge of marketing to cold leads and new people is that we don't just sell them once. To win their trust and keep the transaction going, we have to sell them at multiple conversion points. Having a rapport with people cuts a lot of hurdles out of the transaction, so why not put the effort of lead generation towards fostering and solidifying relationships with our sphere?    Time Stamps    01:59 - Charlie's background and the lessons he learned from being raised by his great-grandparents.  09:31 - How Charlie built a referral business that only requires him to work 10 hours a week. 12:09 - The turning point in his business that made him go all in on referrals and relationships.  15:44 - Why cold leads require us to sell more.  18:14 - How to build a business where your clients chase you down.  23:58 - The story behind Referrals While You Sleep and how it works.    31:49 - The 4 freedoms we have in life.  Guest Info   Charlie Madison is a real estate agent, and the founder of Referrals While You Sleep.   His purpose is to serve as a real estate consultant for his clients. Over Coffee® | Stories and Resources from the Intersection of Art and Science | Exploring How to Make STEAM Work For You

An Over Coffee® special-edition podcast In March, 2020, futurist, author, XR consultant, educator and speaker Charlie Fink was researching his third book. The coronavirus pandemic had taken hold.   Beyond the devastation of the virus itself, unpredictable changes were taking place, worldwide, in almost every aspect of life, work and education. At the time, we talked about some of these changes and where Charlie saw them going.   Charlie cautioned that no one could predict what would happen with virtual technology amid 2020's unprecedented circumstances.  Still, many of his March, 2020 projections proved almost uncannily accurate. Charlie, who teaches XR at Chapman College, writes a regular column for Forbes.   In July, he published his new book, entitled Remote Collaboration & Virtual Conferences: The Future of Work.  An exploration of current virtual resources for a changing workplace, the book covers topics including live streaming, virtual worlds and remote experts. During our 2020 conversation, we discussed the ways Charlie saw extended-reality technology and uses evolving, some of the resources he'd found most effective for work and education, and the trends he was seeing as the world navigated COVID-19. On this edition of Over Coffee®, we cover: What exactly is “XR”, anyway? Some of the trends Charlie saw, in the process of researching his third book; His 2020 projections for the ways he thought society, business and culture could change, due to the pandemic; How Charlie might advise anyone needing to learn new job skills; One parallel between the unprecedented circumstances of the pandemic and a "sea change" in the 1990s; One area in which the XR field has changed in the past year; A preview of Charlie’s new book!; Some of the platforms, in 3D and 2D, that he saw working well for education, work and collaboration; A look at the arts, and how the pandemic may affect artists’ use of the XR medium.

Carlos "Charlie" Viramontes and I met over two years ago through a mutual connection. He was living in San Diego and I was in LA. He was working at a local TV station editing sports promos and wanted to transition to scripted television, but had no idea how to do it. We stayed in touch and developed a friendship over time, until eventually I was able to put him up for an assistant editor position on a scripted television show. He got the job and is now doing what he always dreamed of. I feel Charlie is not only a good example of how to network, but also how to build relationships, which are very important in this industry. “You don't have to have any talent. You just have to come out. I design things that would work for someone who was a lawyer or a school teacher.” - Charlie ToddIn August 2001, Charlie Todd moved to New York City with an interest in acting and comedy. He didn’t have immediate access to a stage, so he started creating in public spaces by staging undercover performances. Charlie documented his first undercover performances on a blog he called Improv Everywhere. Over the past two decades, Charlie has staged hundreds of “missions” involving tens of thousands of undercover performers and shared them on YouTube, garnering millions of views. Highlights include making time stop at Grand Central Terminal, a mass no-pants subway ride, and letting random strangers conduct a world class orchestra in the middle of Manhattan. Do yourself a favor, check out their YouTube. These pranks are not traditional improv. They require significant logistical work on Charlie’s end. He creates the "sandbox" for participants—first friends from his early comedy career in NYC and now thousands of people who have signed up for the Improv Everywhere mailing list—to play in, exercising their own creativity. We talked with Charlie about crowdsourcing the creativity of strangers to create in his words “a happy mob.” Highlights, inspiration, & key learnings:Commanding attention. In comedy, it’s easy to get a laugh out of negative material, pointing the finger at a victim. Charlie does the extraordinary to live out the golden rule, “anything you perform should be something you want people to do to you.”The “why” for participants. In it for the fun of it.Crowd control. Managing an email list of thousands and knowing how many people to tap at one time.Power of YouTube. How YouTube created global reach for Improv Everywhere connecting them with new performers and opportunities. The “why” of the leader. How Charlie’s motivations have shifted over the past 19 years.Space. Public space as the key element to the Improv Everywhere experience.

Today’s podcast features personal trainer, massage therapist and musician, Charlie Reid. Living in the San Francisco Bay Area for 8 years of my life brought with it the opportunity to meet and learn from many wonderful and knowledgeable coaches and trainers.  One of those that I met was Charlie, who I met at Pat Davidson’s “Rethinking the Big Patterns” seminar. Charlie and I later were able to both spend time at Kezar stadium learning sprint and movement philosophy from Adarian Barr, while having plenty of conversations on training. Charlie is one of the smartest and wisest coaches that you may not know.  His base of knowledge is massive, as well as the range of those coaches and systems he has spent time learning from.  If there is a system of thought out there in the world of movement and human performance, there is a good chance Charlie has experience with it.  Charlie is not only a strength coach, but also a certified massage practitioner, and spent years as a professional musician. On the podcast today, Charlie helps us “zoom out” our views on things like stretching, corrective exercise and motor learning.  At the core of our chat today is an extended discussion on the redundancy of the term “corrective exercise” and how to look at the body in a manner that leaves us wondering what truly needs to be corrected.  We also get into a learner-centered approach, and how facilitating that approach may differ from working from novices, up to more advanced athletes. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. And in the sense that you could relate it to just things that perhaps we do in the gym or in rehab or quote-unquote corrective type work. Charlie Reid: Yeah. I mean, a little bit of backstory. I toyed around with some meditation things and I had done this thing called MBSR, which is mindfulness-based stress reduction. And it culminated in a one-day meditation retreat and it was kind of like a collection of different mindfulness techniques. So you got a little bit of exposure to different things, whether that's yoga, walking, meditation, sitting meditation, body scan meditation. But really the one day retreat, which was six hours long, was like the most powerful thing for me. So, you know, my brain was like, I want to do, what's like the Navy seals boot camp of meditation retreats? And talking with some friends and colleagues and whatnot, they said, Oh, the 10-day vipassana, you gotta do that. And so,

The more you know about a person, the easier it is to connect with them. One of the challenges when it comes to biz dev is that we really don’t know too much about the prospect we’re trying to build a relationship with, especially in the early stages of the sales pitch. But what if there was a way for you to gain those insights even if you’ve never met them in person? Charlie Poulson’s first job out of college was building PPT decks for one of the country’s largest agencies. That experience gave him insights on the technical side of sales. A recent discovery of a tool that adds in some psychological insights has allowed him to build a business helping others succeed at sales.   As we continue our holiday hiatus, we give you last year's New Year's day interview again because it is so inspirational in terms of Transformation.  It applies as much as we kick off 2020 as it did at the start of 2019.  Enjoy...   Charlie Rocket ran a multi-million dollar business where he managed hip-hop artists like 2 Chainz into Grammy Awards.  But he weighed over 300 lbs and was diagnosed with a brain tumor so he decided to do what he has done his entire life:  dream the biggest dream and then set about working toward attaining it, regardless of whether his family and friends thought he was crazy.  One of those dreams was to be a Nike Athlete, which came true when his fan-created commercial of his transformation from obesity to Ironman went viral and he was flown to Nike's headquarters in Oregon.  That trip led to Charlie being featured alongside Lebron James and Serena Williams in a commercial with Colin Kaepernick... something that Charlie had been writing in his journal for months prior.    His worldview has such simplicity that it is unique:  to remove the brain and allow himself to dream like a child.  But his follow-through and workmanship, fueled by these dreams, is what has so many people talking about him.  10,000 "No"s intended to be on a two month break for the holidays, but this inspiring conversation felt too pertinent to release on any other day of the year besides New Year's Day.  Launch into your 2019 with the wise words of Charlie Rocket!    SHOW NOTES:  Coming from a long line of vacuum salespeople, (8:11).  Getting fired by Soldier Boy at age 18 and deciding to rep musicians as a talent manager, (11:17).  "If you want to be successful, you have to be of servitude, (12:50).  Posting hundreds of MySpace comments for hours every single day to build an audience one person at a time, (14:00).   Driving the entire coast to 'Salute the DJ' and build an army of DJs who would ultimately help him and his artists win a Grammy, (14:45).  Serving DJs by making it easier for them to access their music better by building the biggest DJ website in the world for Urban DJs, DJservicepack.com, (16:41).  How Charlie executed these big dream ideas, (18:07).  "The key thing is, I shut down my brain...", (19:47).  Walking away from a very successful music career at 305lbs, with a brain tumor, to become an athlete, (21:41).  Why Nike was so special to Charlie from a young age, (25:17).  How Charlie turned his recurring journal entry of a year into a reality, (29:01).  Charlie's dichotomy of being a dreamer and a pragmatic practitioner, (30:46).  Being honest and asking for help from followers, (35:44).  Mobilizing a fan base to help launch a book, (37:13).  Shrinking the brain tumor through a diet of living foods, (39:45).  The word "no" really means "not yet", (40:46).   The "Buy, Cry or Die" theory, (41:01).  What Charlie learned about marketing from PDiddy, (42:39).  Bad relationship to spending money, "We spend it and get it back, we that invented that.", (45:29).  The negatives knock you down, but they're also the tools to your positives... so you can change anything, (47:49).  Charlie's lone regret about not spending enough time with his grandfather because he was chasing the flash of the music industry(48:31).    LINKS:  Website: More on Charlie  Twitter: @CharlieJabaley  Podcast: Charlie Rocket Show  YouTube: Fan Made Nike Commercial  YouTube: Nike's 30th Anniversary Ad  Pre-order Matt's Upcoming Indie Film, Limerence, on iTunes here!!! If you’ve been in the entrepreneurial space for more than a hot minute, you probably know Charlie Gilkey. He started out with a blog, but now he is the creator of Productive Flourishing, a podcast and a site that helps people do the work that matters so they can become their best selves. Believe it or not, we nabbed Charlie as a guest on Worth It, and we’re really excited to share this interview with you. So, let’s get to it. WHAT YOU’LL LEARN  00:40 Who Charlie Gilkey is — and why we’re so excited to chat with him! 01:40 Charlie’s background as an Army logistics officer 03:23 How he took his first blog to a full-on business and podcast 03:43 Why his new book, Start Finishing, is different from other productivity books out there 04:46 Charlie’s view of the “bro” productivity literature that currently exists 06:19 Why our focus on work (rather than our lives) is a crisis of priority 07:40 The hamster wheel so many of us find ourselves on 09:15 Why money is an instrument, not the end goal 11:10 What happens when you add intention and purpose to your money 12:16 How to make more space for those projects you want to finish 12:57 What “thrashing” means 13:51 How most of us are going about “finishing” the wrong way14:20 The 5 Projects Rule 15:25 Why choosing what you’re NOT going to work on frees you to start finishing 16:49 The 2-Hour Rule 18:15 The risks of not scheduling in your project-based work 20:35 Why we tend to justify economics but not emotions when we outsource our work and lives 23:15 The idea of “Project World” 24:35 What Charlie means by “No date, no finish” 28:30 The problem with to-do lists (and how we use them) 30:05 The 15-second or 2-hour decision you’ll need to make with each to-do list item 31:01 The 3 ways we experience time 33:23 Why we run and hide when we don’t have our projects properly aligned 34:23 The risks that come with thinking motion means progress 35:29 How to take back your time by being mindful of your device use 37:58 The risk of planning too far in advance 41:05 Why Charlie often recommends that entrepreneurs don’t plan for more than 6 mos out 42:43 How to handle multipotentialite tendencies 43:10 The benefits of finishing something at a level of mastery 47:39 Charlie’s mission in life  THE PROBLEM WITH “NEVER ENOUGH TIME” While most of our conversations center on money and how to build wealth, we know that most of our audience are entrepreneurs who have multiple interests, love exploring new business ideas, and who want to make the most of the time they’re working. After all, you started your own business so you could have time to do what you love, right?? And yet, as Charlie talks to us about in this episode, we tend to prioritize work to the point of sickness or burnout, and we do it all in the name of money or “getting things done.” The result is that many of us feel like we’re just working for money, that we’re not in alignment, and we don’t have time to do the things we really want to do — or even need to do.  Charlie goes into detail on why this is in his new book, Start Finishing, and he was nice enough to shed some light on this during our chat. In fact, he calls it out pretty early in this episode: If you’re struggling to find the time to do what you want to do, it’s not because there’s not enough time. It’s because your priorities aren’t aligned.    GET OFF THE HAMSTER WHEEL We all have busy lives. It can feel like we’re running from one thing to the next, trying to get ahead. And it can feel like a hamster wheel. We’re not really getting traction and we’re not doing what we feel most called to do because, you know, you have a lot on your plate.  But let’s be real. You get to choose what you’re working on — and what you’re not working on. It can be hard to change what you’ve already set in motion (yes, you have to finish that client project or get those meetings done before you can really make space for what’s important to you), but you can set yourself up for success starting now. How? Charlie calls is the 5 Projects Rule. The 5 Projects Rule This rule is one that Charlie highly recommends, especially for those in the entrepreneurial space. Basically, it means no more than 5 projects per time slice (a day, a week, a month, a quarter, a year). Many of us have 5+ projects we work on in a day, like “Do the laundry, finish that work project, mow the lawn, do the groceries, schedule the vet visit, figure out the water bill” etc. — and it’s no wonder we don’t have time! We are literally cramming our day with projects. Instead, Charlie recommends cutting it back to 5. 5 a day, 5 a week, 5 a month, whatever it is. But no more than 5 in a time slice. To do this, you’ll need to figure out what you don’t have to do, or what you can delegate. Get real with it, and don’t let other people’s priorities or emergencies affect this once you’ve made a decision. Stick to your project plan! And if your time slice is bigger than a day — a week, month, quarter, year, etc. — you can break those projects down into smaller time slices. In a really good planning world, Charlie says, you’d have a long-term project chunked out into smaller projects, i.e. a month-sized project broken down into week-sized projects. If you’re wondering how to break down your projects by week or even day, Charlie has a recommendation for that, too. 2-Hour Rule Ask yourself what a 2-hour chunk looks like for your project breakdowns: what can you get done in 2 hours and where you can fit that block of time into your schedule? Charlie also shares that you can ask yourself which items you can get done in 15 minutes, because you knock things off your list really quickly when you see those things come up. He also adds that we all underestimate how long it takes to get stuff done, so build in a buffer! For a rough buffer, Charlie says you can multiply the time you think a project (or work block) will take by 3. So that 15 minute project… it might actually take you 45 minutes. Plan accordingly.   FINISH THE DANG THING Charlie shared his big productivity secret on this episode: “No date, no finish.” If you don’t have a date for that big project you want to finish, or that little project you want to start, it’s never gonna get done. And picking a date is only half the battle. From there, you need actionable breakdowns — those 5 projects per time slice we talked about. What are you doing today/tomorrow/this week/this month to move you closer to that goal?  There’s another important point that Charlie made: we tend to run and hide from our commitments to our own projects. How often have you stared at your to do list, started to write that email, or tried to find information about your new pet passion… and froze? Maybe you ran straight to a client or customer issue to resolve, or you decided to open Instagram, or maybe you buried yourself in email busy work. #Guilty But the problem with this is: We trick ourselves into thinking “At least we did something.” But it isn’t the work you should be doing, and you know it. So get real with yourself, make a plan, and make it actionable.    START FINISHING: THE BOOK This is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of what we talk about in the podcast. Charlie also covers the problem with how we all manage our to do lists, the risks with planning more than 6 months at a time, and more. We talk about all of it in the podcast, we but we also talk about his new book: Start Finishing.  While this is technically a “productivity book,” Charlie says it’s different in three ways:  It talks just as much about the work of our lives, than the life of our work It’s not like “bro” productivity literature that can be exclusionary It focuses on the work that calls to you, rather than the things on your to-do list He hopes to help people thrive in their businesses, homes, and communities, and we think he’s well on his way. If you want to know how to finally start finishing, juggle all of your many interests, and create a schedule that lets you do more than work and feel guilty… this episode and Charlie’s new book are perfect for you. Charlie Houpert is the co-founder of Charisma on Command, an educational platform where he teaches people how to grow their confidence and charisma. His YouTube channel of the same name has over 1 million subscribers, and his videos routinely generate hundreds of thousands of views.   Charlie got his start online by building an education business focused on parkour. However, Charlie didn't get the traction he was looking for, so he shifted gears to a new interest: confidence. Charlie is a self-proclaimed introvert who struggled in social situations. He decided he would scratch his own itch, and began blogging on the topic of confidence, dating, leadership, and more. But it wasn't until Charlie started his YouTube channel that things really took off. In less than a year, Charisma on Command generated tens of thousands of subscribers and hundreds of thousand of views on some of his most watched videos. He has since scaled that to 1.5 million subscribers in less than 3 years.   My big takeaway from today's conversation: FORMAT is just as important as the content you want to share. This is specifically in reference to YouTube, but I think it applies to any sort of content creation or teaching. It applies to blogs, to podcasts, to video creation, and more. In a nutshell, if you want to break into a competitive market, it's not just about the content you create, or the value you add to someone's life - it's HOW you go about delivering the content that will determine whether people sit up and listen, or ignore you. So if you're looking to tap into a platform like YouTube, or you're just trying to figure out ways your podcast or blog or whatever can stand out, you need to listen to Charlie's advise on format.   In this broadcast, Charlie Houpert and I talk about:   How Charlie got his start online  The 'systems' process Charlie uses to generate growth in any marketing channel he dives into Why Charlie decided to experiment with YouTube, and how he got early viewers and subscriber How Charlie was able to make money from building an audience before he ever had products to sell How to determine if a marketing channel will work (and when to pull the plug) Why Charlie rebranded to Charisma on Command (and how branding impacts your growth potential) 3 things you MUST get right if you want to start a successful YouTube channel A simple technique anyone can use to capitalize on mainstream trends (I love this idea and it's something I'm trying to figure out how to implement in my own business) Why Charlie fired all his clients (and how he transitioned to selling infoproducts full-time) How Charlie developed and launched his most profitable course ever (hint: if you don't do this, you're making a mistake) What Charlie is doing now to expand his brand and grow sales, revenue, and profit via his YouTube channel   And much more...   Charlie on the value of YouTube   "YouTube is a recommendation engine before it's a search engine. So when you're thinking about what sort of content to make, it must be something that is eminently clickable and should follow a trend...when you're just starting out, focus on trends." Over Coffee® | Stories and Resources from the Intersection of Art and Science | Exploring How to Make STEAM Work For You

What if you went downtown--and saw augmented-reality information on today's meal specials appear on your favorite restaurant? That's just one of the scenarios which AR/VR consultant, author and futurist Charlie Fink says is entirely possible. In his new book Metaverse: an AR Enabled Guide to VR and AR, Charlie explores the ways in which augmented and virtual reality may become part of our daily lives in the not-too-distant future. And he doesn't just write about it.   He literally illustrates it!  An augmented-reality app by Living Popups adds another dimension of information and entertainment to Charlie Fink's Metaverse. Charlie, who estimates the date for widespread integration at 2030, says the "killer apps" of the future are...us.  People. he says in Metaverse, will drive adoption of virtual and augmented reality into daily life.  The future vision he presents in his book is both exciting, and a little scary. People will be able to occupy each other's physical reality, Charlie writes--while they're thousands of miles apart.   Artists will have new means of both creating, and sharing, their work.  But consumer adoption of AR and VR will happen slowly, with today's avenues to the technology not even close to what will be needed. In his keynote speech at VRLA 2018, Charlie talked about his background (his areas of expertise include both the entertainment industry and startups), his introduction of Metaverse at CES 2018, and some of the ways we might expect augmented and virtual reality to shape our future world. On this edition of Over Coffee®, you will hear: How Charlie first encountered VR as an entertainment-industry professional in 1992; The fundamental differences that distinguish virtual reality from augmented reality; How Charlie foresees augmented reality changing the workplace; What types of technology will provide the means to making augmented reality widespread; The ways in which VR is freeing artists to create in new dimensions; How the app works, that goes with Metaverse; Some of the biggest obstacles currently preventing the integration of AR, VR and mixed reality into daily life; What conclusions Charlie reached, from writing his book.

This historical fiction novel is set in 1991 in Basra, Iraq - just as the United States is launching Operation Desert Storm. And it’s based on the true story of Ali Fadhil’s life as an ordinary 11 year old boy who loves playing video games and watching American TV like the The Muppet Show. But then, the bombings come and life for Fadhil and his family is becoming more and more bleak.   Here are three things to know about Playing Atari with Saddam Hussein: The main character does NOT actually play Atari with Saddam Hussein. Although as an adult, he does become a translator who ended up working at his trial. In the novel, one way that Ali copes is to imagine that he is playing Pitfall as he travels through his war-torn streets and also because some of the Americans dubbed it “the video game war” because the night-vision green streaks of bombs across the dark sky looked to them like a video game. That this book gives a much-needed window into a time-period that is often overlooked in children’s literature. We are now getting a lot of great books about 9/11 but the era of the Gulf War is still lacking. And many of my students’ parents are veterans of those wars so knowing more about the perspectives of an Iraqi child going through those experiences is important. And humanizes a group of people that some wish to label as enemies. How many similarities students will discover between themselves and Ali. Despite being set halfway around the world in a country the United States was at war with, Ali’s family plays Monopoly while they hide out waiting for the bombs to pass. Ali plays soccer and video games and collects American Superman comics. His sister has a Barbie Dreamhouse! Probably the same one I did with the elevator you pulled up with a little string. And I think back to when I was a teenager watching this war live on CNN with Wolf Blitzer and Bernie Shaw and I never would have realized the kids on the other side of those bombs were so much like me. Playing Atari with Saddam Hussein is a great book for 5th graders through middle schoolers who are interested in the real impacts of war, Iraqi history, or just want a good historical fiction book. And it would make a great complement to the many World War II novel studies out there to add a more modern perspective. Me, Frida and the Secret of the Peacock Ring A second great spring middle grade release is Me, Frida, and the Secret of the Peacock Ring by Angela Cervantes. You might know her work from her two earlier novels -  Gaby, Lost and Found and Allie, First at Last. This novel is a mystery and centers around a missing ring belonging to the artist Frida Kahlo. The main character is 12 year old Paloma Marquez, who begrudgingly travels with her mom from their home in Kansas City to Mexico City for 4 weeks of the summer. (Her mom is a professor and has a fellowship there.) Although Paloma’s father was Mexican, she doesn’t speak Spanish, she worries about missing out on fun with her friends, and she just doesn’t want to go. But…. on her first night in Mexico, she attends a reception at Frida Kahlo’s home - Casa Azul - and receives the following note from a mysterious boy.  Here are three things to love about Angela Cervantes’ Me, Frida, and the Secret of the Peacock Ring: I love how Paloma is inspired in this book by her favorite mysterious series starring Lulu Pennywhistle. And as she gets further and further into the thick of things with brother and sister Gael and Lizzie -  midnight break-ins, and secret rooms, and strange fortune-tellers - Paloma is always referencing Lulu Pennywhistle to figure out how she should proceed. All the Frida Kahlo!! When I found out this book had to do with my favorite artist - I knew I had to read it. And I was so happy to discover that this book does her such justice. Frida Kahlo’s paintings illicit such a visceral reaction from students and once you tell them a little bit about her life - how she painted her pain and made it beautiful - they are enthralled by her. And yes, some notice the exaggerated eyebrows first and some find it funny. But I like how Paloma discussed that at on page 119. How this book is really all about identity and belonging. Paloma’s father was Mexican but died before she could have her own memories of him. And she feels as if she is searching for that connection while she is in Mexico City.  And as Paloma learns more about Frida, she discovers how complex her life was - sometimes feeling torn between being an international artist and wanting the roots of her native Mexican heritage. Me, Frida, and the Secret of the Peacock Ring is a great book for kids who love art or travel, for kids who are intrigued by Mexican culture and the Spanish language - and for anyone who loves a great mystery! Rebound Last up this week is Kwame Alexander’s Rebound - the much-awaited prequel to the much-loved and much-awarded, novel-in-verse The Crossover. This book is all about Josh & Jordan’s father - Chuck “Da Man” Bell. But - this is an origin story. So when we first meet him, he is just Charlie - an 80’s kid reeling from a family tragedy and trying to find his way forward and trying to find his smile again. When home becomes tense, he is involuntarily shipped off to his grandparent’s house for the summer where he starts to find that path forward. Let me read you the first page…. Here are three things I loved about Kwame Alexander’s Rebound: The illustrations by Dawud Anyabwile. While The Crossover had black-out poems throughout the book, Rebound includes these awesome two-page spreads of these mini graphic-novel type sketches of Charlie’s basketball daydreams and wishes and memories. So so cool. And a great hook for kids who love the graphic novel format. The 80s vibe of this book!  Now, you all know I am sucker for 70s and 80s nostalgia! And this book took me back to skating parties and trying for that high score on the Pac Man machine at the rec center where ALL your friends gathered after school. But also - some things haven’t changed - like Black Panther and the Fantastic Four, the importance the right brand of shoes (and not those knockoffs your mom gets you), Strawberry Pop-Tarts, and your folks not letting you watch THAT video on MTV. Discovering all the little references and plot threads that will appear later in The Crossover. How Charlie becomes Chuck, the origins of his Basketball Rules, where his love of jazz came from - and boy it was NOT there at first! And… the little hidden surprises revealed toward the end about who some of the characters end up being in the later book. And I know there’s a ton more that I haven’t figured out yet - so for that reason alone, definitely a rich book to read with a friend or with a book club to mine and discuss all those little details. Rebound is a must-get for your classroom or library. And fans of The Crossover are going to absolutely relish this prequel. It’s a book you finish and want to immediately talk to your friends about. It’s not necessary to have read The Crossover first, but I think it’s a better and more enjoyable reading experience to read them in the order they were published. So The Crossover, the Rebound, and then go read Crossover again! Ann Braden & Saadia Faruqi - Interview Outline Our special guests this week are Ann Braden and Saadia Faruqi. “The irony is that you do so much better, when you stop caring about the outcome and start connecting in the moment and being your best.” - Charlie Hoehn Charlie graduated in 2008 into one of the worst job markets in history, and after a few months of fruitlessly throwing his resume out on Monster, started cold emailing entrepreneurs he wanted to work with. That soon led to working with Ramit Sethi, Tucker Max, and eventually Tim Ferriss who he worked with for three years. Charlie took what he learned from landing these mentorships and compiled it into a book, “Recession Proof Graduate,” which has been read by hundreds of thousands of people around the world, and was one of the first books that inspired me to get off the traditional college path. But then, something happened. Charlie stopped feeling like himself, and after a particularly crazy week of work, realized he was developing anxiety that was having a growing negative impact on his life. It soon reached the point where, as he said, his own girlfriend didn’t even recognize him, and only after trying everything under the sun did he stumble on play as a means of getting out of that mental state and getting control back over his life. Charlie O’Donnell is the Founder and Sole Partner @ Brooklyn Bridge Ventures, the first venture capital fund based in Brooklyn, who manage $23m across 2 funds. Prior to founding Brooklyn Bridge, Charlie worked at the prestigious First Round Capital, with the likes of Josh Koppelman and Union Square Ventures with Fred Wilson. If that wasn’t enough Charlie is one of only a dozen to be named to Business Insider’s 100 Most Influential People in NY Tech five or more times and has served on the founding board of the New York Tech Meetup and is one of the group’s first 100 members. His blog, This is Going to Be BIG!, is one of the ten most widely read VC blogs in the country with over 8,000 readers.   In Today’s Episode You Will Learn: 1.) How Charlie made his move from college to venture and then struck out on his own from USV? 2.) Charlie has previously said that 'venture capital is humbling'. How does Charlie look to construct his portfolio with Brooklyn Bridge? How does he come to terms with the fact he will be wrong most of the time? 3.) What are Charlie's views towards follow-on funding and allocating reserves of the fund? How important is this from a return multiple perspective? How much of a difference does it make for founders to raise a next round with 100% of seed investors committed? 4.) Charlie has previously suggested the importance of being helpful and hard working. Is that really enough to build a brand in today's competitive VC environment? Is brand a form of defensible IP? 5.) How does Charlie react to Ben Lerer's suggestion that Jet.com and Dollar Shave Club are the first dominoes of an incoming wave of e-commerce M&A?
