He eventually served as Chairman of the Board for eight years, the maximum allowed. Then Weiser joined United Religions Initiative, the world's largest grassroots interfaith organization. There he served as Chair of the President's Council, a senior advisory group. Weiser and his wife Maria had nine children. They have 12 grandchildren. Maria died of cancer and Weiser later married Sue Cony, an old friend. This week I was fortunate enough to sit down with Eric Hofestein, the brother of a former co-worker of mine, Adam. Eric spent the majority of his career out in Cali, and unfortunately had the typical career of seeing much death and despair, sometimes reaching too close for comfort. Wanting a change of pace and  exposure, Eric transferred to the San Francisco Bay area Transit Police Department. This change in assignment gave Eric a front row seat into the lives of the homeless, mentally ill, and addicted. Eric and I discuss the problems of the aforementioned but more importantly the solutions that he developed to address this problem that is only getting worse. Traditional patrol work lost its appeal to me after this incident, and I transferred to the San Francisco Bay Area Transit Police Department to wind down my career for retirement in transit policing. Working in San Francisco exposed me to a world of homelessness, mental illness, and addiction in a way I had never seen before. There were over 8,000 homeless crammed into 49 square miles of the iconic city by the bay. Many of them traversing the city and adjacent regions via the BART trains exposing me to the subculture of life on the streets and the effects of addiction in a major city and its transit systems. In my outreach work on and off duty I met many lost souls languishing, suffering, seeking connection to their lost humanity as I struggled to mitigate their conditions. Now in retirement I want to give a voice to the voiceless in the hope of appealing to others to also take up the mantle of outreach work and generate realistic constructive dialogue to address these issues. This book is meant to speak to the power of a spirituality that binds us all as a social species. We have an inherent obligation to help others following our moral compass with compassion and empathy to help others, and if we can't help them, at least "see them." Countries Seek To Return To The MoonOn Wednesday, the Indian space agency ISRO celebrated as its Chandrayaan-3 craft successfully made a soft landing at the lunar south pole. This is the first mission to explore the region around the moon's southern pole, and a major success for ISRO. The mission plans to use a robotic rover to conduct a series of experiments over the course of about 2 weeks, largely centered around the availability of water and oxygen-containing materials.Less than a week earlier, a Russian craft, Luna-25, crashed onto the moon. It would have been Russia's first moon landing in 47 years. The cause of the crash is not yet known. Not 100 yards away, a spinning drum processed sediment to extract gold.This land is managed by a mining company, but it's also the site of a major stream restoration project. Thousands of salmon are returning to this stream in Hope, more than 100 years after aggressive gold mining affected the path of the river. The project to restore Resurrection Creek has brought together a coalition of stakeholders, including the present-day mining company that occupies the site.The restoration of Resurrection Creek began in the early 2000s. The goal was to correct habitat damage caused by historic mining.More than 100 years ago, heavy mining activity in the gold rush town affected the stream pattern, turning it from a meandering creek to a straight ditch. Keep an eye out for more details.  In the late eighties and early nineties the only vocal health advice you would get was that you need to drink a lot of water and avoid reflux. That's what the vocal health experts were saying and even doctors were too. Joanna did a little research and decided to make the information that was only in textbooks available in a more accessible form.  In her book Joanna advises the reader to understand and tolerate that contradiction is part of the health journey, referring to how sensations we feel can be contradictory to what is actually happening. A fundamental bit of information is that it feels like the mouth and the throat are all one thing, but they're not. We think: 'If I drink something, it should help my voice'. We have all this folklore about what to put in your tea and so many other recipes that are recommended. But we're not realising that the vocal cords are further away than we think. One of the functions of having a daily warmup routine is that it becomes self-diagnostic, and everybody should know their typical range at each time of day. If that starts to change consistently, then there's a problem. If it takes a little more effort to get sound going, you make a note of that. So it's really about getting to know your own instrument. There are many different ways singing teachers can encourage a student to do a particular task or exercise. Use simple, sensory language when instructing students and pay attention to how the student responds. Can You Read A Bar Graph? Bar graphs seem like one of the simplest ways to represent data. Many people assume that the longer the bar, the bigger the number it represents. Sometimes bar graphs represent an average not a total count, which is trickier to understand. And because bar graphs are everywhere, psychologists from Wellesley College wanted to determine how well people can actually read and interpret bar graphs. Turns out, one in five people in their study misunderstood the data the bar graphs intended to show. And sometimes simple-looking graphs actually make it harder to understand the data they are based on. Ira talks with Jeremy Wilmer, associate professor, and Sarah Horan Kerns, research associate, at Wellesley College's department of psychology, based in Wellesley Massachusetts about their bar graph research and curriculum to improve data literacy.   Scientists Release The First Fully Complete Human Genome Two decades ago, scientists announced they had sequenced the human genome. What you might not know is that there were gaps in that original sequence—about 8% was completely blank. Now, after a years-long global collaboration, scientists have finally released the first fully complete assembly of the human genome. Researchers believe these missing pieces might be the key to understanding how DNA varies between people. Six scientific papers on the topic were published in a special edition of the academic journal Science this week. Ira talks with Karen Miga and Adam Phillippy, co-founders of the Telomere to Telomere Consortium, an international effort that led to the assembly of this new fully complete human genome. Karen Miga is an assistant professor of bimolecular engineering and the associate director of the UC Santa Cruz Genomics Institute, based in Santa Cruz California.
