    True Stride

Transitions can hit harder than expected. You get through the big push whether it's a move, a deadline, or some intense life shift and then suddenly it all catches up with you. The to-do list might be done, but your body and brain haven't caught up. That space between pushing hard and moving forward again? That's where the real reset needs to happen. In this Wise Walk, we're talking about what it looks like to come down from that kind of high gear. It's not always graceful. Sometimes you're overtired, undernourished, and just plain spent. But there's a lot of value in recognizing that and giving yourself space to pause. This episode is about acknowledging the effort it took to get here, noticing what needs rebalancing, and slowly stepping back into a rhythm that feels sustainable. Because rest isn't a luxury, it's part of the process. When was the last time you felt burnt out, totally drained, or came off a big life change, crisis, or intense mission that left you with nothing left to give? When you're on the backside of that finish line, how do you acknowledge what you just accomplished and give yourself space to recover, heal, and reset? What are the ways you acknowledge the effort you just put in when you've gone all in on something that mattered deeply to you? Do you take time to celebrate how far you've come, even if the journey wasn't perfect or the final stretch got a little messy? Are you allowing yourself a transition period to reflect, recover, and reset before diving into the next big thing? As you look ahead, how do you feel about this next chapter or current transition? What are some ways you can create focus or intention so you feel better as you move forward? Are you allowing everyone to reset and regroup during this transition time? As you take on big projects or navigate major life changes, I invite you to be patient with yourself. Give yourself plenty of grace, and extend that same grace to those supporting you. We're all doing the best we can, especially in times of transition. I'll talk to you next Thursday, so be sure to tune in!   In this episode: [04:51] One of the patterns I've noticed with myself is when I'm on a mission to get something done, I get an adrenaline high.  [05:35] I try to acknowledge this, because I also know I have a hard time downshifting. [06:02] There's a period of transition for me from go-go to absolute recovery mode. [07:38] I'm glad I took time to acknowledge what I had accomplished and have a celebratory evening. I also knew that I was too tired to do anything else. [08:46] Acknowledging how far you've come and what you've accomplished is huge. [09:07] It's also important to acknowledge what you want to reset on. [10:32] There's a transition period of acknowledging the effort put in and then getting back into a routine that sets myself up for success. [11:53] I'm going to rebalance by prioritizing sleep, nourishment, hydration, and saying no. [12:57] I'm also going to try to re-establish my routine with my family and my two German Shepherds. [13:52] We are cocooning and getting back to basics. [15:19] As you work through whatever you've accomplished, take the time to notice what the family is doing and going through. Allow time for everyone to reset and rebalance. [16:12] The hard thing about this move is that I'm imagining more than one location and also unknown locations. [17:49] Sometimes we have plans with the best of intentions and they don't always work out the way we intended. That's okay as long as we acknowledge and accept that. [18:16] Another strategy I use is finding one thing that I can do today that will make me feel 1% better. Playing frisbee with the dogs will help me feel 1% better. [20:23] I invite you to be patient and give yourself grace when you take on big projects.   Memorable Quotes:   “When you're on a mission, you burn the midnight candle, and at some point, you have to stop and rest, or you're not going to be at your best.” - Mary Tess “There's a period of transition between go mode and recovery. I can't just flip a switch. I have to ease my way back.” - Mary Tess “Rest isn't just about me resetting. It's about the whole household finding its rhythm again.” - Mary Tess   Links and Resources: Mary Tess Rooney Email Facebook | LinkedIn | Twitter | Instagram Heart Value Journey to the Heart: Daily Meditations on the Path to Freeing Your Soul

When your child is constantly overwhelmed, melting down over transitions, or avoiding tasks altogether, it's easy to feel like they're just not trying. But the truth is much deeper than behavior. Their brain is likely dysregulated—and stuck in survival mode.Let's walk through what's really happening inside your child's brain when they can't focus, remember directions, or sit still… and what we can do to help them thrive. What Happens to the Brain When a Child Experiences Trauma or Chronic Stress?Trauma hijacks the nervous system. When a child experiences trauma or ongoing stress, their brain shifts into survival mode—fight, flight, freeze, or fawn. This automatic response shuts down the very brain regions responsible for learning, focus, and behavior regulation. One of the first areas impacted is the prefrontal cortex, which governs executive functioning. When this part of the brain goes offline, your child may struggle with impulse control, organization, memory, and attention—not because they aren't capable, but because their brain is busy trying to stay safe.At the same time, the body floods with stress hormones like cortisol, keeping your child in a hypervigilant state. They may appear jumpy, on edge, or quick to react—because their nervous system is stuck in overdrive.Sensory input also becomes overwhelming, making even routine classroom activities feel chaotic or threatening. Transitions, bright lights, or loud sounds can easily trigger a shutdown or meltdown.Focus and memory decline when the brain is in survival modeImpulsivity and disorganization are signs the prefrontal cortex is offlineSensory overwhelm makes learning environments feel unsafeMeltdowns, avoidance, or zoning out are protective—not defiant—responsesReal-Life ExampleOne mom shared how her daughter would break down in tears every time math came up—not because she didn't understand the numbers, but because her nervous system went straight into panic mode. That fear of failure was rooted in earlier struggles that left her feeling ashamed and defeated.Once they shifted the focus to calming her brain first—with simple regulation strategies—her anxiety around math began to ease, and learning became possible again. What Does Emotional Dysregulation Look Like in the Classroom?Emotional dysregulation doesn't follow one script. It shows up in so many different ways—and that's exactly why kids get so often misunderstood, misdiagnosed, or mislabeled.

In a world where many are calling for a revision of the King James Version, how do we respond? What do we say? What should we believe? What questions should we ask? For those who prefer to just transition their church to a modern translation, how do we interpret the word "faithful" in the context of modern translations? Why is there an issue with some of their basic arguments for this transition? This episode is filled with some basic thoughts that challenges Christians to stop and think, considering how we should properly interpret these modern conversations. It opens with some quotes from a message I listened to from another pastor who has decided to transition his church away from the KJV. In accordance, we walk through the conversation hoping to challenge Christians to study and know how to answer these confusing topics.

    Leadership on the Links

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 24, 2025 47:07

Many professionals find themselves at a career crossroads, contemplating a career change or transition. Whether it's moving from a superintendent role to a sales/marketing position, or exploring opportunities beyond the golf course, these transitions can be both exciting and daunting. Eric Snelsire, a seasoned veteran of the golf industry, has experienced his fair share of career pivots. From his early days as an assistant superintendent at prestigious clubs like Oakmont Country Club, to becoming a superintendent at facilities like The Links at Lighthouse Sound, and eventually transitioning into sales and marketing roles, Eric has navigated the challenges and opportunities that come with changing paths. For those considering a career transition in the golf industry, Eric's story serves as a testament to the importance of self-reflection, skill development, and a willingness to embrace new challenges. By approaching these transitions with a positive mindset and a commitment to continuous learning, golf professionals can unlock new opportunities and find fulfillment in their evolving careers. Transitioning to Sales One of the primary challenges Eric faced during his transition was the perceived stigma associated with moving from the superintendent role to a sales position. "I would say that there's a little bit of an ego first for me having the background that I had of working at US Open Golf courses that there was almost a negative connotation of transitioning into sales like I had given up in my career, so to speak," he shared. This perception, unfortunately, is not uncommon in the industry, as some may view a move away from the golf course as a step back or a lack of dedication. However, Eric was quick to dispel this notion, emphasizing the valuable skills and experiences he gained as a superintendent that ultimately prepared him for success in his new role. Developing New Skills Another significant challenge Eric encountered was the need to develop new skill sets beyond agronomy. As a superintendent, the focus is often on maintaining the golf course to the highest standards, but as Eric noted, "Superintendents need to kind of take that leap of faith and say, I'm really a leader in this organization or club that I need to be at the table. And if you fear confrontation or those situations, just understand that there are going to be decisions made that are going to impact you that you're not going to have a say." This shift in mindset, from solely focusing on the golf course to becoming a strategic business partner, can be a difficult transition for some. However, Eric emphasizes the importance of self-evaluation, continuous education, and developing leadership skills to ensure a successful career transition. Despite the challenges, Eric's career journey also highlights the strengths and opportunities that can come with a career change. His diverse experience, from working at elite clubs to public facilities, has given him a unique perspective that he now leverages in his sales and marketing role. Soundbytes: “There's a place for everybody. If being at the elite clubs, like, early part of my career was something that you desire, you know, there's sacrifice to be made like that." (8:35-8:45) "Superintendents need to kind of take that leap of faith and say, I'm really a leader in this organization or club that I need to be at the table. And if you fear confrontation or those situations, just understand that there are going to be decisions made that are going to impact you that you're not going to have a say." (25:40) Quotes: "When your crew knows their work isn't just about maintaining grass, but about creating a memorable experience, that's when you see real pride and commitment." "It's not just about a well-groomed course; it's about understanding how every maintenance decision impacts the playability. If you want a course that meets the needs of every golfer, you have to plan every detail with that in mind." "Being part of our local GCSAA chapter isn't just networking; it's about sharing challenges and solutions with people who are in the same trenches. It's invaluable for growth and camaraderie." "Every course has its own challenges, but when you work your way up, you learn to adapt to different budgets, expectations, and standards. The fundamentals don't change; it's just a matter of raising the bar." "If you're starting out, focus on mastering the basics of agronomy, build your network, and remember that your reputation is everything in this industry."

Hey there! Welcome the the LDS Mission Podcast and to episode 213 - Navigating Tough Dynamics. Have you ever caught yourself labeling something as a problem—and suddenly it feels heavy, urgent, or unsolvable? In this episode, I share a powerful mindset shift that has helped me and so many missionaries I work with: what if it's not a problem... it's just a dynamic? Whether you're a missionary adjusting to a new transfer, a returned missionary navigating post-mission life, or a missionary mom experiencing a new phase of parenting, we all face tough dynamics that feel sticky or uncertain. This idea was inspired by a conversation with my daughter as she prepares to be the only child at home. Her tears, her worries, and her sadness reminded me how deeply our brains want to flag change as something scary. But viewing it as a dynamic—a situation in motion that we're learning to navigate—can create flexibility, empowerment, and grace for ourselves. I hope this episode helps you reframe some of the experiences you're having on the mission or in your life right now. Let's stop running into mental walls and start riding the waves of change. You were built for this. I believe in you. As always, if you found this episode helpful, I want to invite you to subscribe if you aren't already, share this episode with your friends and missionaries you know, and write a review.
