Options for Success: A PhD's Guide to Navigating Career Transitions and Thriving in Your Next Professional Chapter (Oxford UP, 2025) is a transformative, step-by-step guide designed for early to mid-career academics exploring career paths beyond faculty roles and into careers in industry. This book speaks directly to PhDs asking "What's next?" as they consider their career options beyond the faculty. Blending narrative, practical workbook exercises and real-life examples, Options for Success empowers readers to reimagine their career expectations, navigate the complexities of career transition, and align their professional paths with their personal values and goals. At the heart of this guide is the Options for Success framework, a seven-step process that takes readers through the phases of career change-from Detox, making mental and emotional space for new opportunities, to Onboarding, integrating into new roles with insight into workplace dynamics. With tools like the Ecosystems and Economies framework and Professional Profile Pillars, readers can inventory their skills, evaluate their core strengths, and identify careers that align with their values. The Translational Power of Action Verbs exercise encourages academics to shift from a "knowing lens" to a "doing lens," while the Power Story Method helps them translate their achievements into impactful stories that resonate with potential employers. The book also addresses the "messy middle" of job searching, equipping readers with strategies to maintain momentum and resilience through self-care practices and targeted skills building. Unlike traditional career guides, Options for Success is rich with templates, scripts, and sample materials, from hybrid CV-résumés to informational interview guides and bios, offering readers the practical support they need to articulate their unique value effectively.Career transition stories from PhDs across disciplines illustrate the real-world application of these principles across a range of fields and roles, showing diverse pathways into impactful, fulfilling careers. Written in a coach's voice-approachable, empathetic, and filled with generative questions-Options for Success feels like having a personalized career coach, guiding readers to explore, evaluate, and act with confidence. Options for Success is an essential companion for any PhD ready to transition beyond the faculty and into new professional possibilities. Naomi Hattaway is the founder of Leaving Well, a practice devoted to helping organizations treat leadership transitions not as crises or cleanups—but as acts of cultural maturity. She works with mission-driven teams to address board development, succession planning gaps, and workplace transition support. Through interim executive leadership and advisory services, Naomi's work lives at the intersection of trust-building, systems change, and the radical belief that how we end things matters just as much as how we begin.   Key Takeaways: Leadership changes are often treated as crises even though they are normal and predictable. Naomi reframes exits as acts of cultural maturity rather than simple HR events. Thoughtful offboarding helps organizations create healthy closure and continuity. Transitions affect not only leaders but also the team that remains. Founder departures can trigger identity questions when organizations are built around one personality. Acknowledging grief and uncertainty helps teams move forward with clarity. Succession planning should involve the whole team, not just top leadership. Documentation, relationship handoffs, and knowledge transfer strengthen organizational resilience. Sabbaticals and temporary leaves can help organizations practice navigating absence and return. People respond to change in different ways, and each style brings value. Understanding these differences helps teams balance stability with forward movement. Healthy organizations accept that transition is messy but handle it with intention and care.   “We need to normalize the reality that people leave.”   “We put so much effort and beautiful intention into the onboarding, and then the offboarding is not the same level of energy.”   “We have to start somewhere by being a little bit better to each other when it comes to goodbye.” - Naomi Hattaway   Reach out to Naomi Hattaway at: Website: https://naomihattaway.com/ Instagram: https://instagram.com/naomihattaway LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/naomihattaway       Let's Work Together to Amplify Your Leadership + Influence1. In this episode, Natalia Ombach joins Rhonda for a thoughtful conversation about career transitions, personal growth, and redefining professional purpose. Natalia Ombach, an executive coach and former corporate risk and compliance leader, shares how a life-changing family experience prompted her to rethink success, leadership, and connection. Together, they explore the messy reality of career pivots, the importance of community, and how coaching can help professionals move from siloed work environments toward more collaborative, human-centered leadership.Key Takeaways:Why career transitions are often messy, emotional, and longer than we expectHow personal life events can spark powerful professional reinventionThe hidden challenges faced by “support function” leaders like legal, compliance, and cybersecurityWhy collaboration often breaks down inside organizations—and how to fix itThe importance of community and conversation during moments of career uncertaintyHow coaching helps leaders move from isolation to impactMeet Natalia OmbachNatalia is an executive and leadership coach, she works mostly with leaders of corporate support functions, like Legal, Risk, Compliance, or Cybersecurity in global organisations, helping them to reclaim ownership and direction of their function, be more impactful and be seen as strategic partner in their leadership team. She brings 15+ years of international corporate experience, including leadership roles in legal, risk, compliance, and DEI.Visit her website | Follow her on LinkedIn | Access her FREE Booklet hereHow She PivotedNatalia Ombach's career pivot didn't happen overnight. After years of building a respected corporate legal and risk career while raising a family, she began to feel that something was missing. That feeling intensified after a traumatic accident involving her son, which changed how she viewed community, connection, and the role other people play in our strength during difficult times.“You feel stronger just because other people wish for you to feel stronger.” shared Natalia on episode 36 of the She Thrives with Rhonda Coleman Wandel podcast. That experience reshaped how Natalia thought about leadership and relationships at work. She began exploring coaching as a way to help others navigate the same emotional and professional complexity she had experienced. What started as curiosity evolved into a new career focused on helping leaders better understand themselves, their teams, and the invisible dynamics that shape workplace culture.Insights for Ambitious WomenOne of Natalia's most powerful lessons is that uncertainty during a career transition is completely normal. Many professionals believe they should have everything figured out by a certain age or stage in their careers. Natalia challenges that assumption, reminding listeners that questioning your path is often the first step toward meaningful growth.“It is normal. There's nothing wrong with you.” expressed Natalia on episode 36 of the She Thrives with Rhonda Coleman Wandel podcast Want More Like This?Be sure to subscribe to the podcast on your favourite platform so you never miss an episode. We desire comfort, clarity, and assurance during transition seasons, but oftentimes we forget that God has ALREADY given us His words to cling to during those times. Jesus warned His own disciples several times that transition is coming and even what to expect. The disciples experienced relief and wonder when they REMEMBERED what Jesus had said to them. What if grief wasn't something to “get over,” but something that could guide you toward deeper purpose? In this moving conversation, Amana Mayfield-Faulkner, founder of Amana Be Love and former palliative care nurse, shares how profound personal loss reshaped her understanding of life, death, intuition, and connection. From witnessing her first love take his final breaths in his twenties… to giving birth to her daughter and holding her through her last moments… Amana's journey through grief has been both devastating and transformative. Through these experiences, she discovered that grief does not end — it changes. And when honored instead of suppressed, it can become a compass. In this episode, we explore:• What working in palliative care teaches about presence and responsibility• Why grief doesn't follow a timeline — and shouldn't be rushed• The importance of community when navigating loss• How to support someone grieving without expectation• What “post-traumatic growth” can look like• Reconnecting with your intuition as a source of strength• Why transitions — like in birth — often feel darkest right before breakthroughAmana reminds us that grief exists because love exists. And when we allow ourselves to move through the “underworld” of loss — without building our home there — we can emerge with greater depth, compassion, and even access to joy we didn't know was possible. Her message is especially powerful for anyone navigating uncertainty, loss, or major life transitions:Start small. Start with yourself. Trust your inner voice. And remember — transitions do not last forever. This episode is a beautiful reminder that influence often shows up in quiet presence, deep listening, and the courage to share what is often unseen and unspoken.Listen in and be inspired to show up — for yourself and for others — with compassion, responsibility, and trust in your own inner guidance.Website URL: www.amanabelove.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/amanabelove/

In this episode, I wrote called Dear Change.Lately I've been sitting in that strange space many of us know well. The space between who we were and who we are becoming. The space where something in life has shifted, but the next chapter hasn't fully revealed itself yet.It can feel foggy there, uncertain, even tiring. Our minds want answers and direction, but sometimes life is asking something else of us.Patience.Drawing on William Bridges' work on transitions, I speak about the season many people try to rush through. The in between. The neutral zone. The place where things that once felt certain begin to loosen, old rhythms no longer quite fit, and clarity hasn't yet arrived. This episode is a reminder that not every season of life is for building. Some seasons are for releasing. Some seasons are for waiting. Some seasons are simply for becoming. If you're in a moment where life feels unclear, slower than usual, or like something inside you is reorganising, snuggle up and listen in.Support the show

In this episode, Fiorenza Rossini sits down with Sam Kennedy Christian, an accredited executive coach, coach supervisor, and certified Fair Play Method facilitator at The Float Space.Together, they explore the often invisible but overwhelming mental load carried by working mothers. “Sharing the mental load or even just distributing the mental responsibilities can significantly reduce stress and improve mental health. It's about surfacing those invisible tasks and having open conversations about them.”, says Sam.From understanding how societal expectations shape household responsibilities to practical tools for reducing stress, this conversation offers actionable insights to foster balance, belonging, and well-being. Whether you're juggling work, family, or both, you'll find strategies to make space for self-care, creativity, and shared responsibilities in this episode! In particular, I really enjoyed getting to know more about the Fair Play method! It's a game-changing approach developed by Eve Rodsky. It's designed to help couples divide household responsibilities more equitably. The method uses a deck of cards, each representing a task, to make the invisible mental load visible and manageable. It's not just about who does what, but about having clear ownership of tasks from start to finish.Tune in for the full conversation

Transitioning into high-performance aircraft is more than a horsepower upgrade. It's a fundamental shift in planning, energy management, and mindset. In this episode of More Right Rudder, host Sarah Staudt is joined by Matt Speare, CFI/CFII (airplane and helicopter), two-time Master Flight Instructor, and President of the Lancair Owners and Builders Organization. Together, they explore the challenges pilots and instructors face when moving from trainer-style aircraft into faster, cleaner, and less forgiving machines. Many modern instructors never encounter high-performance aircraft during their own training. As a result, the first exposure often comes later in a pilot's career, sometimes without the structured transition training these airplanes demand. Speare and Staudt break down why speed changes everything and how being “five miles behind the airplane” can quickly become a safety issue. Whether you're an instructor preparing to teach in high-performance aircraft or a pilot considering your next step up the performance ladder, this episode highlights why standardized training, disciplined planning, and deep aircraft knowledge are critical to safe operations.
