It is rare for a character to have survived and thrived through almost 90 years of continuous reinvention, adaptation and exploitation. It's even rarer for a consensus to emerge as to a definitive incarnation of such a character. Well, Batman: The Animated Series is that unicorn, a coming together of incredible talent to produce the most elegant distillation of decades of storytelling, along with its own innovations and contributions to the mythos. 30 plus years since it premiered, the reputation of the series has grown even further and now the behind the scenes story has been told in a fantastic new book by my guest today, Daniel Dockery, in I Am the Night: The Ultimate Unauthorized History of Batman: The Animated Series. We talk about how Daniel finds the nuances and untold stories in shows' creation myths, celebrating the unheralded behind the scenes heroes, the pro-social humanist version of the Bruce Wayne character, how the show captured the storytelling elegance of classic Hollywood and film noir, how limitations breed creativity, the difference between darkness and maturity, Paul Dini's 'misplaced love' theory of Batman villains and his case for the most underrated episode of BTAS.

Moon kicks things off with random facts, including the slightly unsettling reminder that everything you see technically happened in the past because your brain needs time to process visual information. Humanity's deepest hole is only about 7.6 miles deep compared to an Earth radius of thousands of miles, and apparently hundreds of thousands of people around the world may hit the space bar during the exact same second you do.More importantly, the scientific word for your stomach rumbling enters the conversation, and the crew immediately does what scientists surely hoped humanity would do with that information: turns it into a bit. Then Rafe takes everybody deeper into the cosmic rabbit hole. Looking at distant stars means looking into the past, some of those stars may not even exist anymore, and the Andromeda galaxy we see is essentially an ancient version of itself. We eventually make it all the way back to the cosmic microwave background and the early universe before Moon asks the only question that matters: do you know what movies are playing in theaters right now?And with that, science is over. It's time for Three in Five. The rules sound painfully simple. Rafe gives a category. The contestant gets five seconds to name three things that fit it. No stall tactics, no verbal buffering and no wasting precious seconds trying to remember information you absolutely knew before somebody put you on the radio.Naturally, everything goes wonderfully wrong.Mike in Fenton is asked for three Julia Roberts movies and fires off Pretty Woman, Ocean's 8 and Ocean's 11. Unfortunately, Ocean's 8 creates a minor courtroom proceeding before Mike recovers by naming states beginning with M and actors who played Batman.Matt gets cereal mascots and Saturday Night Live cast members while apparently communicating through technology recovered from an archaeological dig. Somehow, he survives. Then Chris is asked for three TV shows set in New York City and confidently opens with… CHiPs.Yes. CHiPs.California Highway Patrol.New York City. This comedy podcast cannot explain what happened there. We can only document it for future generations.Things become even more legally questionable when Chris attempts to name three Doritos flavors and introduces “spicy taco” into the proceedings. The judges investigate. Mercy is granted. Then he names ibuprofen, Tylenol and acetaminophen as three over-the-counter pain relievers, creating another debate because Tylenol and acetaminophen might be getting suspiciously friendly with each other. Somehow, tickets are still awarded because Moon has apparently decided rules are just another form of audience participation.Lisa joins the game and gives us what sounds suspiciously like the “Pittsburgh Farts” while attempting to name professional baseball teams. The crew loses it, Lisa survives, and we eventually discover she knows her domestic beers extremely well despite preferring Ichiban. Honestly, respect. Then Bill returns seeking redemption after a previous mathematical catastrophe, only to discover that redemption is apparently not available today. Asked to name three laundry detergent brands, Bill gets as far as “Tide.”Goodbye, Bill.Jordan struggles with NFL teams and St. Louis landmarks, giving us “the Arch, the River…” before the five-second clock claims another victim. At this point the game has stopped being trivia and become a controlled experiment studying what happens when humans experience extremely mild pressure. Finally, Brad attempts to end things on a high note with refrigerator condiments, solo artists known by one name, and holidays that get you a day off work. Naturally, even that creates debates over Elvis, Bowie, Veterans Day and what exactly constitutes a universally recognized day off.Throw in AC/DC and Foo Fighters tickets, Shinedown, Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson, refrigerator hot-sauce organization, missing Milk Duds and a shocking amount of leniency from Moon, and you've got another comedy podcast that started by contemplating the age of the universe and ended by arguing about condiments.Science taught us that looking into space means looking into the past.Three in Five taught us something even more important:Never judge someone for freezing on an easy question until Rafe puts a five-second timer on you.Follow The Rizzuto Show → linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → 1057thepoint.com/RizzShow.Hear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Jace and Rocky break down all 13 DC releases for the week of September 2, 2026. Batgirl #23 finds Cassandra Cain racing through a Gotham overrun by the Parliament of Trees while badly injured herself, determined to get a poisoned girl to the antidote that can save her life. Rather than advancing the larger Bad Seeds plot, the tie-in keeps the focus on Cassandra and her supporting cast, making the event feel more like the backdrop for a Batgirl story than an interruption of one. Batman #13 has Batman fighting his way through the GCPD to confront Vandal Savage, but the detour into Bad Seeds largely puts Matt Fraction's ongoing Batman story on hold. There are entertaining moments of Batman tearing through corrupt officers and demanding they do better for Gotham, but very little actually happens and the momentum from the previous issue's mystery is left waiting for the crossover to get out of the way. JSA #23 jumps into the largely unexplored years after the Justice Society was forced out of public life, with Wildcat, Hourman and Doctor Mid-Nite recruited for a secret Cold War mission behind enemy lines. The period setting and espionage premise immediately feel like a natural fit for the JSA, delivering one of the strongest issues of the run just as the series is approaching its end. 100 Bullets: The U.S. of Anger #3 remains frustratingly difficult to decipher three issues in, even for Rocky as a reader of the original 100 Bullets. The anger and division suggested by the title are certainly present, and the two hate-spewing podcasters provide one of the issue's more recognizable ideas, but neither Jace nor Rocky can determine what Brian Azzarello ultimately wants the story to say. Absolute Green Lantern #18 sees Simon Baz and Agent Zero finally escape the strange space where they have both been trapped and emerge in front of Cameron Chase, who appears to know exactly what has been happening. After eighteen issues of deliberately opaque mythology surrounding the Absolute Spectrum, Manhunters and its different colors and concepts, Chase's promise that "now we get the answers" offers the clearest indication yet that the series may finally start bringing its mysteries together. Absolute Superman #23 brings Superman's relentless pursuit of Brainiac into conflict with Toyman and forces his absolute belief in the sanctity of life into one of its most difficult tests yet. Jason Aaron continues pushing a young Superman who believes he must save absolutely everyone, suggesting that his refusal to accept his own limitations may eventually become as dangerous to him as any villain he faces. Batman/Superman: World's Finest — World's Weirdest #1 pulls Batman and Superman into the wonderfully bizarre world of Weird Al Yankovic in a whimsical story built around a surprisingly sincere message: be yourself, be true to yourself and embrace whatever makes you weird. It's far more fantastical than the type of story Jace usually gravitates toward, but the humor, artwork and genuine Weird Al sensibility make the concept work. Legion of Super-Heroes #1 begins with R.J. Brande's dream of bringing young heroes from across the galaxy together surviving his apparent murder as Brainiac 5 and Matter-Eater Lad investigate what happened to him. Joshua Williamson and Hayden Sherman reinvent the Legion from the ground up while retaining recognizable pieces of its history, including Lightning Lad's love of ancient Superboy comics, and use the mystery surrounding Brande to begin bringing this new generation together. Supergirl: Survived #4 has Kara and a young Kal-El spending much of the issue discovering what their Kryptonian powers can do beneath a yellow sun before encountering Brainiac 5, who may provide the means to finally continue their journey toward Earth. The story is heavily decompressed, but the relationship between Kara and Kal remains its strength while the increasingly unexpected assortment of DC concepts continues giving the series its own identity. Teen Titans #1 finds Jason Todd's search for a child missing for nine days colliding with a group of young heroes conducting their own investigation into their missing friend. Proximity, Fair Play, Cheshire Cat, Wild Card and Eugene Choi aren't actually a superhero team yet—the name Teen Titans began as little more than their online group chat—but their unlikely connection with Jason creates a distinctly modern starting point for Kyle Higgins' new take on the concept. Deadman #4 sends Boston Brand toward Heaven demanding answers about why the souls he has been helping aren't necessarily destined to stay there, only to receive an unexpected lesson about the value of giving someone even a brief moment of hope. The idea gives Deadman a renewed sense of purpose, but neither Jace nor Rocky feels the philosophical detour has enough to say to justify how far the series has moved from the character they know. Doom Patrol #1 introduces a broke Doom Patrol wandering from place to place taking whatever work they can get, including a seemingly mundane job searching for a missing cat. The bizarre visuals certainly fit the team's reputation for weirdness, but the story offers little sense of direction or connection to the previous Doom Patrol run, leaving both Jace and Rocky disappointed by an opening issue that feels far less interesting than its characters should be. Finally, Superman: The Stranger #1 drops Superman into a Black Label world reminiscent of Depression-era America, delivering a visually striking reinterpretation whose gritty setting immediately distinguishes it from the main DC Universe. The artwork is the issue's greatest strength, while the story itself feels familiar enough that Jace is waiting to see whether Wes Craig can push the concept somewhere more original as the series develops. Jace and Rocky also cover this week's collected editions before ranking all 13 books and revealing their Books of the Week. X-Men '97 Is STILL Great... So Why Does Season 2 Feel Off?

    Super Hero Homies!

X-Men '97 Season 2 has officially come to an end! After an incredible first season, did Marvel Animation manage to recapture the magic, or did Season 2 bite off more than it could chew? In this episode of SuperHero Homies, we give our full spoiler-filled review of X-Men '97 Season 2 Episodes 5-9, including the season finale, Apocalypse, Nightcrawler, the incredible action and animation, our biggest criticisms, and what we want from X-Men '97 Season 3. But first, we've got a hefty 40-minute cold open! COLD OPEN: FIRST 40 MINUTES DRAGON CON 2026 We're heading to Dragon Con starting September 3rd, and we'll be there all weekend! We're excited to experience the convention and hopefully meet some fellow SuperHero Homies along the way. If you see us wandering around Dragon Con, come say hello! SODA CITY COMIC CON We also recap our trip to Soda City Comic Con, where we had the opportunity to meet Wilson Bethel, better known as Bullseye from Daredevil and Daredevil: Born Again, and the legendary Peter Weller, star of RoboCop. We share stories from both encounters and our overall experience at the convention. ARE THE FOX X-MEN MOVIES UNDERRATED? With X-Men hotter than ever, we revisit the Fox X-Men movie franchise and ask whether these films deserve more credit. The franchise definitely had some lows, but movies like Logan and X-Men: Days of Future Past remain among the greatest comic book movies ever made. So... have we been too hard on the Fox X-Men? THE BATMAN JOINS THE DCU?! Could Matt Reeves' Batman eventually be folded into James Gunn's larger DC Universe? We discuss the possibility of Robert Pattinson's Batman sharing the screen with David Corenswet's Superman, whether that combination could actually work, and what it would mean for the future of the DCU. We also discuss our excitement for Batman: Knightfall Part 1 and the chilling new Absolute Batman Mr. Freeze origin story. LANTERNS We're loving Lanterns! Unfortunately, we haven't had enough time to review the series weekly, but we give our thoughts on what we've seen so far and why we can't wait to give the show a proper review. X-MEN '97 SEASON 2 FULL SPOILERS After the cold open, we dive into X-Men '97 Season 2 Episodes 5-9 and the finale. There's still a LOT to love about this series. The animation, voice acting, superhero action, fight scenes, comic book references, and character work remain top-notch. Certain characters and storylines are handled exceptionally well, particularly Nightcrawler, who continues to be one of our favorite characters. But Season 2 also left us frustrated. We discuss: • Apocalypse and his Season 2 storyline • The disappointing conclusion to the overarching conflict • Why certain Apocalypse storylines feel half-baked • Nightcrawler's fantastic character development • The incredible animation and voice acting • Some of the season's best fight scenes • Our favorite and least favorite moments • The disjointed storytelling • Season 2's pacing problems • How Season 2 compares to Season 1 • The X-Men '97 Season 2 ending • Our theories and predictions for Season 3 Our biggest issue is that Season 2 simply needed more room to breathe. There are great ideas throughout these episodes, but important story beats sometimes move so quickly that they don't receive the emotional weight or development they deserve. The overarching Apocalypse storyline is especially frustrating because such an iconic X-Men villain deserved a more fulfilling conclusion. That doesn't mean we've suddenly stopped loving X-Men '97. Far from it. We still think this is an excellent superhero animated series with fantastic characters, gorgeous animation, phenomenal action, and a clear love for Marvel Comics and X-Men history. Season 1 simply set an incredibly high bar, and Season 2 doesn't quite reach it. We're still VERY excited for X-Men '97 Season 3, and we're hoping Marvel Animation slows things down just enough to let its biggest moments breathe. JOIN THE DISCUSSION Did X-Men '97 Season 2 stick the landing? Was Apocalypse handled properly? Was Season 1 better? And what do YOU want to see in Season 3? Let us know in the comments!
