https://www.skool.com/circle-of-interval-magicians/about I teach you interval-based composition in 30 days (or less)! From the basics to advanced concepts, I'll guide you step by step. Start your free 7-day trial today, and after that, it's less than one coffee per week! If you're new here, my name is Frank, and I'm the co-founder of the Music Interval Theory Academy (MITA), which I've been running since 2015. I teach composers how to stop guessing and start creating music with real intention, using intervals as the foundation instead of chords. How I got here... ** 1993: Heard the Jurassic Park score in the theater and was blown away. ** 2000: Started to compose and learned traditional theory. Quickly, I hit the same wall most composers hit: the music I wrote was technically correct but forgettable. ** 2005 onwards: Started scoring professionally for animation, film, documentaries, and video games (Disney, Mattel, theme parks, and many others). Built a library of 700+ tracks for production and sync. ** 2015: Everything changed. A workshop with Thomas Chase Jones (TC) flipped the way I think about music. It was all about intervals, and composition got cleaner, faster, and more original. That shift became a system. The system became MITA. ** Since then: hundreds of composers have gone through the Academy. My business partner TC has credits on approximately 1,800 TV shows (Scooby-Doo, Batman, Dexter's Lab, Tom and Jerry — look him up). Together, we teach what most music schools don't. On this channel, I share the exact methods I use to help composers find their voice, work faster, and stop feeling stuck. If you've ever felt like your music sounds too generic, or like you understand theory but still can't quite control what you're creating, you're in the right place. Never stop composing, Frank

Jace and Rocky break down all 11 DC releases for the week of August 12, 2026. In Green Lantern Corps #19, Guy Gardner brings the Lanterns bonded to the emotional entities together around a new idea: their individual emotions remain distinct, but they may now be able to draw on the entire emotional spectrum when they need it. In Barbara Gordon: Breakout #4, Barbara finally meets one of the innocent people she entered prison to find—a cop locked up for refusing to play along with Vandal Savage—while Sparrow's murder gives the story some badly needed forward momentum. In Clayface: Celebrity Dirt #2, someone is impersonating Clayface, and his attempt to uncover who is behind it becomes much more personal when a friend he confides in is murdered. In Fury of Firestorm #5, Firehawk briefly reaches the Ronnie Raymond trapped inside the Firestorm Matrix, but Professor Stein's reaction when the sentient Matrix calls him "father" raises new questions about whether his supposed remorse was ever genuine. In Emperor Aquaman #20, Arthur moves his fight with Poseidon away from Earth so he can finally cut loose, and the God of the Sea gets a firsthand demonstration of just how terrifyingly powerful Aquaman has become. In Absolute Batman #23, Bruce's obsession with Jack Grimm has reached the point where he believes virtually every defining moment in his life was deliberately engineered, leaving his oldest friends wondering whether Batman has gone too far. The Nice House by the Sea #11, the penultimate issue of the second arc, finally delivers major answers and forward momentum for the larger mystery while still making the revelation involving Oliver land through the character drama that has defined the series. In Supergirl #16, still believing Superman is missing, Kara takes responsibility for the House of El as Zod's larger plan begins coming into focus and a female Eradicator unexpectedly enters the conflict. In Bleeding Hearts #7, Poke's growing bond with Rabbit and her mother shows him becoming increasingly human, but that fragile connection is threatened when Rabbit is grievously injured by one of the undead. In Batman and Robin: Year One — Dynamic Duos #1, a young Bruce nearly loses control when a group of kids mug him and his date, while an encounter with the Wolfpack gives him another early lesson in becoming the Batman he will eventually be. In Action Comics #1101, Lois Lane proves why she is a Pulitzer-winning reporter by getting under General Zod's skin, probing for his real agenda and deliberately keeping him talking because she knows he may be planning to kill her. Meanwhile, Superman has returned, but will it be just to face defeat at the hands of Zod? Jace and Rocky also cover the week's collected editions, reprints and facsimiles before ranking all 11 books and revealing their Books of the Week.   Chapter 00:00 — DC Week Overview, Legion Reactions & Comic-Con Follow-Up 16:42 — Green Lantern Corps #19 33:40 — Barbara Gordon: Breakout #4 37:55 — Clayface: Celebrity Dirt #2 41:23 — Fury of Firestorm #5 53:34 — Emperor Aquaman #20 1:11:15 — Absolute Batman #23 1:36:53 — The Nice House by the Sea #11 1:47:58 — Action Comics #1101 1:48:07 — Supergirl #16 1:57:33 — Bleeding Hearts #7 2:01:05 — Batman and Robin: Year One — Dynamic Duos #1 2:09:47 — Collected Editions, Reprints & Facsimiles 2:13:29 — Rankings & Books of the Week

    Movie of the Year
2006 - Volver (feat. Inkoo Kang from The New Yorker)

    Movie of the Year

Movie of the Year: 2006VolverThe Volver Podcast Episode Enters the BracketThe Volver podcast episode brings Pedro Almodóvar's beloved ghost story into the full Movie of the Year 2006 bracket. This week, Greg and Mike hold down the fort while Ryan sits this one out. Fortunately, they have serious backup. New Yorker television critic Inkoo Kang joins the panel to talk grief, ghosts, and the women of La Mancha. Together, they ask whether Almodóvar's warmest film has what it takes to survive the tournament. The conversation covers the film's supernatural heart, its unforgettable women, and its thoroughly rotten men. Additionally, the crew builds a Mount Rushmore of It Girls and runs through The Five. As always, the bracket outcome stays a secret here. Consequently, you will need to listen to find out how Volver fares.About the FilmVolver is a 2006 Spanish comedy-drama written and directed by Pedro Almodóvar. Penélope Cruz stars as Raimunda, a working-class mother in Madrid whose life unravels after a sudden death at home. Meanwhile, her sister Sole discovers that their late mother Irene, played by Carmen Maura, may have returned from the grave. The film is set partly in La Mancha, the windswept region where Almodóvar grew up.Volver premiered at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival, where it won Best Screenplay. Notably, its six lead actresses shared the Best Actress prize, an almost unheard-of collective honor. Cruz later earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, a landmark for Spanish-language performances. Roger Ebert gave the film four stars and named it among his four-star movies of 2006. You can find full details on the film's cast and awards at IMDb.The 2006 field is stacked with heavyweights. Volver joins previous entries like The Prestige, Little Miss Sunshine, and Borat in the fight for the crown.Guest Panelist: Inkoo KangInkoo Kang is the television critic at The New Yorker, where she has covered TV since 2022. Before that, she served as a TV critic at The Washington Post and The Hollywood Reporter. Her byline has also appeared at Slate, MTV News, The Village Voice, and TheWrap over a career spanning more than a decade. In practice, that résumé makes her one of the sharpest working critics on storytelling, performance, and cultural memory. Her perspective on Almodóvar's women makes this Volver podcast conversation essential listening.Ghosts and Grief on the Volver PodcastVolver treats death with a shrug and grief with a casserole. The Taste Buds dig into how Almodóvar builds a ghost story without a single scare. Irene's return plays as domestic comedy first and emotional reckoning second. However, the laughs never cheapen the loss underneath them.Inkoo, Greg, and Mike explore how the film's La Mancha setting shapes its view of mortality. The village women tend graves like gardens and speak of the dead like neighbors. As a result, the supernatural feels less like fantasy and more like tradition. The panel asks whether that matter-of-fact approach to death is exactly why the film hits so hard. Ultimately, Volver argues that the dead stay with us because we keep setting a place for them.Mothers, Daughters, and Sisters on the Volver PodcastEvery meaningful relationship in Volver runs between women. Raimunda and her daughter Paula protect each other through the film's darkest turn. Sole and Raimunda circle each other with the friction only sisters manage. Above all, Irene's return forces three generations to confront secrets that shaped them all.The panel unpacks how Almodóvar stages forgiveness as the film's true climax. Specifically, they discuss the confessions between mother and daughter that reframe everything before them. Inkoo brings a critic's eye to Cruz's performance, which anchors the whole ensemble. Moreover, the group considers how the film honors caretaking as heroic labor. Cooking, cleaning, and burying become acts of love here, not background noise.Ugh, Dudes: The Men of VolverThe men of Volver are a rogues' gallery of predators, cheats, and dead weight. Consequently, the Volver podcast panel dedicates a full segment to asking a simple question. Why does Almodóvar write men this way, and what does their awfulness reveal? The panel argues that the film's male characters function as weather, not people. They cause damage, and then the women clean up after the storm. By contrast, the women get every ounce of the film's interiority and warmth. The crew debates whether this imbalance is a flaw or the entire point. Nevertheless, everyone agrees on one thing. The dudes in this movie? Ugh.Rushmore: It GirlsPenélope Cruz became a global It Girl on the strength of this performance. Therefore, the crew carves a Mount Rushmore of It Girls in her honor. Greg, Mike, and Inkoo each argue for the four faces that defined It Girl status across eras. The picks range from obvious icons to deep-cut favorites, and the debate gets appropriately heated. Listen to the episode to hear which four faces make the mountain. The Five on This Week's Volver PodcastThe episode also features The Five, a recurring segment built on movie archetypes. The panel receives five iconic character types and must argue for the 2006 star who best embodies each one. This week's archetypes are a murderers' row: Scout Finch, Batman, Ripley, Robin Hood, and Frankenstein's Monster.Consequently, the debate ranges across the entire 2006 landscape. Who carries Scout's wide-eyed moral clarity? Which star wears Batman's brooding armor? Moreover, who earns Ripley's steel, Robin Hood's roguish charm, or the Monster's tragic misunderstood soul? Greg, Mike, and Inkoo each make their cases, and the picks get delightfully contentious. The answers stay spoiler-free here, so hit play to hear who claims each archetype. Why Volver Still MattersVolver endures because it treats ordinary women's lives as the stuff of grand cinema. Twenty years later, its blend of melodrama, comedy, and ghost story still feels singular. Cruz's Oscar-nominated turn opened doors for Spanish-language performances in Hollywood's biggest categories. Furthermore, the film cemented Almodóvar's late-career run as one of world cinema's great streaks. The Volver podcast conversation makes the case that the film's warmth is its weapon. Plenty of movies mine grief for devastation. By contrast, Volver mines grief for connection, and that choice keeps audiences returning. The title means "to return" in Spanish, after all. Great films do exactly that.Related Episodes from Movie of the Year: 2006Movies of 2006: Intro Part 12006 Bracket Reveal and Sweet 16Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story2006 Mixtape Part I2006 Mixtape Part IIBrickThe Puffy ChairThe Devil Wears PradaLittle Miss SunshineThe PrestigeBoratAll Movie of the Year episodesFAQ: Volver Podcast and FilmWhat is the Volver podcast episode about? In this Volver podcast episode, Greg and Mike from Movie of the Year discuss Pedro Almodóvar's 2006 film with guest critic Inkoo Kang. Welcome to Multiverse News, your source for information about all your favorite fictional universes.Marvel Studios appears to have found the leader of its new mutant team, as Deadline reported last week that Heartstopper and Warfare star Kit Connor has landed the role of Scott Summers, better known as Cyclops, in the future MCU X-Men film. Sources say Connor went through much the same process as Samara Weaving, who was attached as Emma Frost the week prior, meeting with Schreier and Marvel president Kevin Feige alongside a group of candidates who tested after the July 4th holiday before the studio settled on him. Neither Marvel nor Connor has confirmed the casting, and the film, written by Beef creator Lee Sung Jin and The Bear co-creator Joanna Calo, still has no release date. Cyclops has been played on screen before by James Marsden and Tye Sheridan, with Marsden set to reprise the role in December's Avengers: Doomsday. Sony and Marvel Studios' Spider-Man: Brand New Day crossed the one-billion-dollar mark overseas in just twelve days of release, making it the second-fastest film ever to reach that number abroad behind Avengers: Endgame. The Destin Daniel Cretton film now stands at $1.67 billion worldwide, split between $654.3 million domestically and $1.013 billion internationally, which makes it the twelfth highest-grossing movie of all time and only the sixteenth ever to clear a billion in foreign markets alone. Universal had a milestone of its own to celebrate, as Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey passed $1.1 billion worldwide to become the highest-grossing film of his career ahead of The Dark Knight Rises, while also becoming the biggest IMAX release ever with $289 million, and it still has China to open on Friday. James Gunn spent part of a Threads session last week putting down one of the most persistent rumors surrounding Matt Reeves' Batman trilogy, telling a fan who asked whether The Batman Part III was being filmed simultaneously with Part II simply, “I can deny.” The theory had gained steam over years of delays, most recently when a redesigned Part II logo appeared to work a Roman numeral III into the artwork, and it offered fans a tidy explanation for why the sequel has taken so long to arrive. In reality, Part II only began principal photography in London in June, and Warner Bros. has already pushed the film from October 2027 to February 18, 2028. Sony and Nintendo's live-action The Legend of Zelda has cast Australian actor Uli Latukefu as Ganondorf under a multi-picture deal, with Severance's Dichen Lachman playing Impa and The Handmaid's Tale's Yvonne Strahovski reported as a queen character. The late Sam Neill also filmed an undisclosed role before his death on July 13, marking one of the final screen performances of his career.Gareth Edwards has exited Universal and Amblin's untitled Jurassic World Rebirth sequel over creative differences, with the studios now searching for a replacement; David Koepp's script is finished and Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali and Jonathan Bailey are all still expected back for a 2027 shoot.A24 released the full trailer for Primetime, the Lance Oppenheim drama that Robert Pattinson produces and stars in as To Catch a Predator host Chris Hansen, in theaters September 25.Lionsgate has confirmed that Michael 2 is targeting a production start toward the end of this year or in early 2027, with the sequel to this year's Michael Jackson biopic aiming for a 2028 release.Lionsgate is also developing a new Leprechaun film written by horror veterans Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, reviving a franchise that ran eight movies between 1993 and 2018.Nicholas Hoult has been cast in season 2 of HBO's Harry Potter series as Gilderoy Lockhart, a major character in The Chamber of Secrets that was portrayed by Kenneth Branagh in the 2002 film adaptation.

Our crime fighting trio voluntarily hurls themselves into Joel Schumacher's radioactive fever dream this week by revisiting Batman Forever (1995) and Batman & Robin (1997), where every streetlight is apparently a blacklight, every criminal belongs to a themed fashion gang, and Val Kilmer is unanimously crowned the hottest Batman to ever brood beneath a cowl. Sorry, George. The gang breaks down why Kilmer somehow nails both Bruce Wayne and Batman, why Clooney spends most of Batman & Robin sounding like he's reading cue cards held hostage just off camera, and why Arnold Schwarzenegger's Mr. Freeze deserves either an Oscar or a lifetime ban from speaking in public. Somewhere between ice pun #47 and ice pun #72, the conversation evolves into the realization that Batman could have ended the movie 15 different times if he'd simply thrown literally anything at Mr. Freeze instead of politely waiting for him to finish his stand-up routine. Of course, no Schumacher discussion would be completewithout celebrating Jim Carrey's beautifully deranged Riddler, Tommy Lee Jones' aggressively theatrical Two-Face, Gotham's inexplicably fabulous glow-stick street gangs, and the discovery that every supervillain in the city must share the same criminal seamstress. Seriously... who keeps making these immaculatecustom henchman uniforms? Is there a union? Is there a rewards program? Does Riddler get 15% off after ordering matching jackets? We demand answers.Along the way, we ask Gotham's most important questions: Why is Riddler Island covered in giant glowing questionmarks if nobody is supposed to know where the Riddler lives? Why does every gang member look like they just got kicked out of a goth laser tag tournament? And perhaps the greatest mystery in comic book history... who approved all those bat nipples?Come for the Batman discussions, stay for the cinematic nonsense that somehow just keeps getting better. Mitch is currently fighting for his life against a brutal kidney stone, but a little physical agony won't stop us from diving straight into the deep end. Once the water chugging settled down, we spent this episode pulling back the curtain on basically everything the mainstream media refuses to touch. We get into the wild world of secret space programs, why those triangular UFOs might actually be reverse-engineered government tech, and how the phrase "conspiracy theory" is used to keep us quiet. From there, we tackle the heavy stuff: internet censorship, the corporate breakdown over a Batman comic writer, the dark truths behind Dr. Fauci's experiments, and what's really driving the conflicts in Ukraine. It's a chaotic, unfiltered ride through global politics, deep-state agendas, and the terrifying reality of modern brainwashing. Ultimately, with nuclear threats looming and the world feeling upside down, we end on a personal note about finding peace, facing reality, and why it's time to get right with God!

Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed a live-action The Jetsons movie starring Jim Carrey on its Q2 2026 earnings call, and Frank breaks down why the casting is doing all the heavy lifting so far. A Jetsons reboot on its own would be an easy shrug. The Flintstones already ran that play in the 90s. What makes this one different is that Carrey is in the middle of a genuine second wind, coming off the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise and heading into a Grinch remake.Frank makes the case that Warner Bros. has the tools to do something stranger than a straight adaptation. Barbie proved the studio will greenlight a meta take on a legacy property, and The Jetsons is sitting on an obvious hook: the retro-futurist world the show promised in 1962 is not the future anyone actually got. Pull George Jetson into the real 2026 and let him ask where his flying car went while he stares at a Roomba. That is a movie with a reason to exist beyond nostalgia. The segment closes with a look at the rest of the earnings call, which mostly reaffirmed titles already on the books. Aegon's Conquest from the Game of Thrones universe, the next Matrix installment, and the next Batman film all sit on the same post-2027 slate as The Jetsons.Solo segment, no guest on this one.0:00 Jim Carrey lands The Jetsons0:24 The Jim Carrey second wind, from Sonic to The Grinch0:40 What a Barbie-style meta approach could unlock0:58 Making a Jetsons movie worth watching1:11 Digging through the rest of the WB earnings callJim Carrey is attached to star in a live-action The Jetsons, presumably as George Jetson, confirmed on the Warner Bros. The ranger's journey from level 5 to 20 is a majestic tale of growth, survival, and discovering that Hunter's Mark may not actually deserve permanent custody of your concentration. Randall's Gloom Stalker becomes an invisible crossbow machine, Ash's Drakewarden takes to the skies aboard a fire-breathing murder lizard, and Tyler spends sixteen levels converting every available feat, spell slot, and medical supply into increasingly desperate attempts to keep one flying snake alive. By level 20, two of these characters are legendary hunters. The third is still shouting, "Don't worry, buddy, I have Cure Wounds!" while filling out another pet insurance claim. Show Notes In this episode, we continue building our 2014 DnD 5e rangers, taking Randall's Gloom Stalker, Ash's Drakewarden, and Tyler's original Player's Handbook Beast Master from level 5 all the way to level 20. Extra Attack immediately improves everyone's combat potential, although Tyler is mostly excited because he can finally attack without ordering his flying snake to do it for him. From there, we examine the spells, feats, subclass features, and questionable design decisions that define the ranger's later levels. We also commit ranger heresy by asking whether Hunter's Mark is actually worth using. Magic Weapon offers better accuracy, reliable damage, an hour-long duration, and none of the constant bonus-action reassignment that interferes with Crossbow Expert, companion commands, and other important ranger abilities. As the builds gain more attacks and begin using Sharpshooter, improving the chance to hit becomes increasingly valuable, leaving Hunter's Mark standing in the wilderness wondering why nobody invited it to combat. The three subclasses develop very differently. Randall's Gloom Stalker continues doing Gloom Stalker things, including attacking repeatedly, disappearing into darkness, gaining Greater Invisibility, and generally becoming Batman with a crossbow. Ash's Drakewarden gains elemental damage, a flying companion, and a breath weapon that can turn a battlefield into an aerial geometry problem. Meanwhile, Tyler's Beast Master slowly crawls toward competence, eventually allowing his snake to attack twice and share spells, assuming it survives long enough to enjoy either feature. At the highest levels, the ranger's progression becomes much less exciting. Fifth-level spells offer a few useful options, Feral Senses arrives with awkward limitations, and the class gives players several excellent reasons to multiclass after level 15. The journey concludes with Foe Slayer, a capstone so underwhelming that the group proposes replacing it with a legendary death arrow capable of instantly killing enemies, because a level-20 ranger should receive something more exciting than occasionally adding Wisdom to one attack. Finally, the Question of the Week examines why players reacted differently to the DnD 2024 rules and the Pathfinder 2e Remaster. The discussion explores community expectations, the circumstances behind each revision, compatibility concerns, and the uncomfortable space occupied by an update that changes too much to feel like ordinary 5e but not enough to feel like a genuinely new edition. Key Takeaways Hunter's Mark is not mandatory. Rangers have several competing uses for concentration and bonus actions. Magic Weapon, Elemental Weapon, Guardian of Nature, and subclass abilities may provide more value depending on the build. Accuracy becomes increasingly important. Extra Attack, Crossbow Expert, Sharpshooter, and subclass features reward effects that improve the chance of landing multiple attacks rather than adding modest damage to only one target. The original Beast Master demands too much maintenance. Tyler considers healing feats, defensive buffs, and other resources simply to keep his low-CR companion alive, although the subclass eventually gains respectable features such as Bestial Fury and Share Spells. Gloom Stalker remains extremely powerful. Additional attacks, darkness-based invisibility, Stalker's Flurry, Greater Invisibility, and strong action economy allow the subclass to remain dangerous throughout the ranger's progression. Drakewarden delivers the strongest companion fantasy. Its drake gains mobility, elemental abilities, flight, and a flexible breath weapon without requiring the ranger to build an entire emergency medical system around it. Ranger spells are useful, but spell slots are scarce. Pass Without Trace, Spike Growth, Lightning Arrow, Elemental Weapon, Guardian of Nature, and other options can be excellent, but rangers need to make each limited spell slot count. The late-level class features are underwhelming. Feral Senses has frustrating restrictions, and Foe Slayer offers too little for a level-20 capstone, especially for rangers making numerous attacks every round. Subclass choice dramatically changes the ranger experience. One ranger becomes Batman, another gets an airborne dragon flamethrower, and the third spends sixteen levels inventing increasingly elaborate snake-based healthcare. Welcome to the RPGBOT Podcast. San Francisco Airport's Fear of Flying Clinic Welcomes Nervous Passengers Aboard If your stomach drops at the thought of getting on an airplane, you're not alone. Millions of Americans share a fear of flying. Some psychologists say the way through it is to rewire the brain, by gradually facing the very thing that feels dangerous. But you can't just hop on a plane whenever you want to practice. That's where a Bay Area program hosted at San Francisco International Airport can help. For nearly 50 years, they've been helping uneasy travelers get back in the air. Reporter Evan Roberts brings us the story from five miles up. San José's Batman, Fighting for the Unhoused, Is the Real Life Superhero ‘We Need' If you happen to be in downtown San José at night, you might spot a man in a mask, wearing a black and purple cape and toting a cart full of supplies.. This is the Batman of San José — a volunteer who has spent nearly eight years walking the city at night to help unhoused residents. He's a far cry from the vigilantes of comic books. He isn't swooping from rooftops, seeking revenge or delivering justice through fists. His superpower is noticing people who feel ignored, and offering them food, first aid supplies, and sometimes, being someone they can confide in. KQED's Srishti Prabha brings us his story. This week we let YouTube's AI suggest future episodes, resulting in gems like "Spencer reads your toxic parenting books while Kevin plays high-stakes countdown" and other completely incomprehensible AI slop that somehow still sounds like something we'd actually do. We spiral into a real conversation about whether AI is hitting a wall or just getting weirder, complete with tangents on math proofs, translation earbuds, and a demonetization streak we're desperately trying not to jinx. Then it's a full taste-test of disappointing Miller Lite-flavored Pringles (beer cheeseburger, beer braised steak, and beer battered onion rings) alongside a lineup of Japanese grape candies, because no episode is complete without Kevin subjecting Spencer to mystery snacks. We also open the mailbag for listener emails covering chaos magic, egregores, servitors, Thelema, tulpas, whether Alistair Crowley was really summoning demons or just tripping balls, and an extremely unhinged improvised origin story (courtesy of the Spleen) explaining exactly how Kevin ended up working with Dan Harmon in the first place. Along the way: a genuinely emotional detour into breakup anger, limerence, and the impossibility of ever getting real closure, a Baki anime rant that gets surprisingly not-safe-for-YouTube, and a serious discussion about whether AI-written podcast blurbs are secretly just what dreams sound like to someone who wasn't there.
