What happens once a society finds a way to turn a human body into an energy source, and decides that's a good deal? Podcaster and TruStory FM co-founder Pete Wright joins Matthew and Paul to talk about “Lattice,” his debut science fiction novella, and the death penalty, corporate power, and family loyalty questions Wright built into its plot from the very first chapter.Wright talks about writing the book's bones as a teenager and only now finishing it, while Matthew and Paul push on why the story never lets its villains twirl a mustache, they just sign off in a procurement meeting. They get into the Kobayashi Maru, the Batman choice, and a death penalty scene with no last-second rescue. What does it cost a person to have power and refuse to use it?Full show notes and resourcesConnect with Pete Wright: Website**************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, an Ethical Panda podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. We always talk about comic books getting turned into movies, but what happens when the traffic moves backward? In this special One Shot episode of Moving Panels, host Laramy Wells is joined by co-hosts Tim Williams, Nicholas Pepin, and Gerry D. to dive deep into the massive, chaotic, and awesome world of comic books directly inspired by cinema and television. From canonical continuation series that picked up where canceled TV shows left off to insane crossover events Hollywood could never afford, we break down how the comic medium expands our favorite screen universes. What we're unpacking tonight:The Official Continuations: Joss Whedon's massive, budget-free Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8 and the incredible DC Universe expansions in Smallville Season 11 (including Clark becoming a Green Lantern and his tactical showdown with Batman!).The McClane Files: A deep dive into John McClane's comic history, featuring the prequel series Die Hard: Year One and Laramy's recent read, A Million Ways to Die Hard. The Slashers & Sci-Fi Icons: How Ash Williams (Army of Darkness/The Evil Dead) became a comic book staple, the iconic Dark Horse Alien vs. Predator runs, and the massive Ghostbusters and Star Trek comic universes. The 80s Cartoon Toy Box: The deep-cut lore of Transformers, G.I. Joe, M.A.S.K., Voltron, ThunderCats, Dino-Riders, Bravestarr, Visionaries, SilverHawks, and Inhumanoids.⚠️ ANNOUNCEMENT: We hit a bit of a snag behind the scenes tonight. At one point during the recording, Laramy suffered a massive computer glitch. We kept the tapes rolling anyway, and the guys carried the torch to the finish line. We're curious to see if the audience can actually catch exactly when Laramy is no longer a part of the episode! Batman struggles with being obsessive. Iroman has a problem with arrogance. And the Hulk…well, I think you can guess what his character flaw is. We never say a superhero isn't super just because they have issues. So why do we as men think we cannot be good mentors, just because we aren't perfect? Forty-three percent of boys today are raised by a single mom. Seventy-eight percent of teachers are female. So many young men have no examples in their life showing them what it means to be a man. Take some time today for a young man in your life. Invite him on a hike or a fishing trip. You don't have to be perfect. To that boy, you will be a superhero. To learn about the 5 critical needs of boys, visit Trail Life USA or RaisingGodlyBoys.com.
Send us Fan Mail In this episode, Ben Haslar from Reels of Justice joins the podcast. He brings along the movie Blade. Marty and Clif give Ben the movie Batman to watch.First up is Batman (1989), Tim Burton's gothic take on the Caped Crusader starring Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson. Clif, Marty and Ben revisit the film that launched the modern comic book movie era. They discuss everything from Burton's unique style to Nicholson's unforgettable Joker. This version of Gotham City still casts a long shadow over superhero films today. Then it's time for Blade, where Wesley Snipes slices his way through vampires in one of the coolest action films of the '90s. The gang talks about the movie's influence on comic book cinema, it's groundbreaking action sequences and why Blade doesn't get the credit it deserves for paving the way for the superhero boom.Along the way: Juggalo origins, Batman movie rankings, vampire fashion, Michael Keaton appreciation and memorable movie quotes.#TalkingPondo #FilmPodcast #Batman89 #Blade #MichaelKeaton #WesleySnipes #MovieReview #ComicBookMovies Support the showFind our films here:The Love Song of William H ShawRevenge of ZoeWriting Fren-ZeeMaking Pondo on FacebookX (formerly Twitter):@MakingPondoInstagramMaking Pondo on Letterboxd:Season OneSeason TwoSeason ThreeSeason FourTheme Song "The Rain" by Russ PacePhotos by Geoffrey Notkin

Send us Fan MailODYSSEYThe tales of our quartet of heroic hacks hath concluded, and alas Season 17's continued voyage to cover a single work otherwise shunned by the codes of TGTPTU would have to wait another day as the movie theater houses of IMAX and lesser film abodes have brought to the weary masses a film of epic proportions and grand length. That motion picture would be THE ODYSSEY (2026), and the man of Briton to foregather the talents of the camera-wielding Double Hoyte and the Talented Mr. Damon harkens back to adventures during TGTPTU's Season 12 and is no other than Sir (IRL!) Christopher Edward Nolan. As your humble scribe is no soothsayer, he cannot in good faith foretell how the film will deviate from the classic work of Homer (blind and of Ancient Grecian fame, not Simpson of Springfield). Nor can yours truly hint at the reactions the hosts Ryan, Ken, or he, himself, Thomas will have, nor may he here throw his customary shade and poison the reader of such unnecessarily ramose sentences as herein contained toward his views on the film. Will adapting an oral tale later committed to archaic languages befall the fate of Aronofsky's Noah (2014, covered in Season 11)? Will Travis Scott with his role as The Bard for Nolan surpass his previous acting credit in Harmony Korine's Aggro Dr1ft (2023)? Will Jon Bernthal battle Robert Pattinson in a clash between the comic book titans The Punisher and The Batman? Will Bill Irwin's cyclops surpass both his previous Nolan role as robot and that of whoever was the cyclops in Krull (1983, covered earlier this season)? Will the film contain or be structured so that the beginning and end meet in the middle, again cribbing TGTPTU's patented pincer movement and leading to further litigation? Will there be an Iliad prequel? Of all this and more, I am humbly ignorant. But I will wager anyone a Way of the Gun DVD with postage paid that Irwin's cyclops will rival that of James Marsden's or Tye Sheridan's. You can @ me using the contacts below. In two weeks, a homecoming as the 1x1's begin and Season 17 draws to a close. Women achieve the same cardiovascular health benefits as men at roughly half the exercise volume. Yet the standard exercise guidelines prescribe identical amounts for both. Dr Paul Batman argues this is one example of a deeper problem: a fitness model built on incomplete data, applied to populations it was never designed to reach. Only 16 percent of people follow the conventional guidelines. The question is not how to motivate the other 84 percent to do more. It is whether we are asking them to do the right thing at all.You can find Dr Paul at his LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dr-paul-batman-9092a052/ Use Code "PQPODCAST10" to get 10% off your Lumo Coffee order:https://lumocoffee.com/ Interested in sharing your story? Nearly two years after it first debuted on the Jeffrey Bezos streaming network, Liam & Cal are wrapping up their final review of season one of Batman Caped Crusader with the episode "Savage Night." After our cliffhanger last week, we pick up with Barbara Gordon doing her best convince Harvey Dent to testify against those who left him scarred, but Harvey is struggling to accept the idea of not just accepting his fate as punishment for all of the deaths he's caused. What ends up being a race to get Harvey to safety with the help of the Commissioner and Batman before Boss Thorne can intercept the former D.A. is what is the main discussion of this episode. The hosts also discuss the slight improvement on visuals through some new settings and more action-packed sequences, some music that invokes the use of the themes in Batman: The Animated Series , the table being set for season two with a mysterious clown and Boss Thorne making an enemy of Batman and a voice cast that really outdo themselves for the finale. Spider-Man star J.K. Simmons and Tom Brittney join Nerdtropolis Mayor Sean Tajipour on Reel Insights to talk about The Westies, the gritty new MGM+ crime drama premiering July 12. Brittney has also recently been linked by unconfirmed reports to the DCU's future Batman role, while Simmons remains one of the most recognizable comic book actors through Spider-Man, Invincible and The Legend of Korra. In The Westies, Simmons plays Eamon Sweeney, the old-school leader fighting to maintain control of his criminal empire. Brittney plays Jimmy Roarke, a younger and more rebellious member of the organization who represents a generation hungry to change how business is done.Simmons and Brittney break down the growing conflict between the Westies' established leadership and the younger generation. They explain how control, ambition and survival create a dangerous internal struggle that could threaten the future of the entire organization. The conversation also explores why the quieter scenes can feel just as threatening as the show's violent moments. Simmons discusses using silence, listening and observation to reveal what Eamon is thinking, while Brittney opens up about Jimmy's relationship with Bridget, played by Sarah Bolger, and how their private moments offer a different side of his character.Simmons also explains his approach to researching the real Westies. Because Eamon and Jimmy are fictional characters created for the series, he focused on lifting the characters from the page instead of trying to imitate specific historical figures. The interview closes with Simmons and Brittney revealing one of the show's most unexpected elements: its dark humor. They discuss how Irish gallows humor brings moments of light into an otherwise brutal world and why humor becomes essential when the dramatic stakes are so high.Plus, Simmons delivers the ultimate compliment by calling Nerdtropolis “the best word in the history of words.”Visit Nerdtropolis.comFacebook.com/nerdtropolisInstagram.com/nerdtropolisTwitter.com/nerdtropolisTikTok.com/@nerdtropolis

Legendary comics artist Tom Mandrake joins Byron to discuss the release of one of the most iconic, atmospheric, and terrifying runs in DC Comics history, The Spectre (now collected in two Omnibus Editions,) and his new work as series artist finishing up Rick Veitch's run on the Swamp Thing from 1989, a project that has been shelved for decades due to controversy. We kick things off by celebrating the long-awaited hardcover treatment of Tom's masterpiece: The Spectre (with writer John Ostrander). Spanning 62 issues of unmatched supernatural horror, Tom shares behind-the-scenes stories, pushing the boundaries of mainstream DC editorial in the 90s, and utilizing the incredible visual malleability of The Spectre in the book. We also go back to the future to discuss Tom's return to the Swamp Thing. Learn what it was like to step back into his 80s artistic style; help finish Rick Veitch's legendary, once-cancelled run; and collaborate with creators to complete a historic piece of comic book legacy.
Tim Burton's Batman and Batman Returns are explored here as two sides of the same dark, imaginative vision, tracing how Burton's signature style shaped Gotham, redefined Batman on screen, and pushed superhero filmmaking toward something stranger, moodier, and more cinematic. From the gothic production design and model work to the unforgettable scores, performances, and studio pressures behind both films, this episode examines how Burton balanced comic-book spectacle with a personal artistic voice, and why his version of Batman still stands out as one of the genre's most distinctive chapters.
Craig and Big Mac talk with Robert Wuhl of Arliss, Batman, Bull Durham, and many others, about baseball and much more.
In a rare two-part episode, Gilbert and Frank are joined by not one, but TWO of the actresses to play Catwoman during the run of the classic 1966 “Batman” series, Lee Meriwether and Julie Newmar. First, Lee looks back on her reign as Miss America, impersonates Ed Wynn and threatens (promises?) to discipline Gilbert. Next up, Julie reminisces about working with everyone from Michael Rennie to Chad & Jeremy and favors us with her favorite Catwoman catchphrase. Also, Julie feuds with Jim Belushi, Lee hops a flight with J. Fred Muggs and Buddy Ebsen runs afoul of Shirley Temple. PLUS: “The Eddie Cantor Story”! The return of Billy Barty! Gilbert channels Sydney Greenstreet! And the strange mystery of Cesar Romero and the orange wedges! In 1939, Detective Comics introduced a new superhero. He was just a man with no superpowers. He only had the mind of a detective and a whole lot of money. He is a silent guardian, watching over the people of Gotham City. Protecting the good and punishing the evil. He isn't the comic book hero we deserve, but he is the one we need. “The biggest risk in motion pictures is to not take a risk. You have to be putting it out there and offering people something new, and that's what will get them out of their houses.”Katie Razzall speaks to Oscar-winning filmmaker Christopher Nolan. The 55-year-old, whose directing credits include Inception, Interstellar and Oppenheimer, is widely considered one of the 21st century's most influential filmmakers.Born in London in 1970, his career began in the mid-1990s, when he would proofread scripts, operate cameras and direct for corporate information films. Barely a decade later, he was chosen to direct Christian Bale as Batman in The Dark Knight trilogy, setting a new standard for how superheroes were portrayed on screen.A string of blockbusters followed, making him one of the highest-grossing directors of all time, and was later knighted in 2024 for his services to film. He's now releasing his latest project, The Odyssey - an ambitious adaptation of Homer's ancient Greek story, starring a Hollywood A-List cast, including Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway and Zendaya.Thank you to the Culture team for their help in making this programme.
