Although this figure is widely accepted, the real number may be even higher by "self-injury mortality," often through overdoses. In May 2025, the Trump administration highlighted the need to honor veterans, stating that the federal government “should treat veterans like the heroes they are.” As part of this commitment, the Trump administration signed an executive order to combat veteran homelessness by establishing the National Center for Warrior Independence, aiming to house 6,000 veterans by 2028. In 2016, Dr. Carson accepted the position of Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under the Trump administration. After completing his tenure as the 17th Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development in 2021, Dr. Carson founded the American Cornerstone Institute. This organization is focused on fighting for the principles that have guided him through life and that make this country great: faith, liberty, community and life. Dr. Carson and his wife, Candy Carson, co-founded the Carson Scholars Fund, which recognizes young people of all backgrounds for exceptional academic and humanitarian accomplishments.
