If there's anyone who can tell the story of Napa Valley's evolution over the decades, it's Peterson, whose career has spanned more than half a century. He's witnessed and contributed to the valley's transformation from a quiet, rural region to one of the world's most renowned wine-producing areas. Peterson's journey began in 1948, when he started as a home winemaker in Iowa. This early passion for winemaking sparked a long and illustrious career that would take him from the Midwest to the heart of California's wine country. After earning a B.S. in Chemical Technology from Iowa State University in 1952, Peterson moved to California, where he earned an M.S. in Food Technology from UC Berkeley in 1956 and a PhD in Agricultural Chemistry. In 1958, Peterson joined the iconic E. & J. Gallo Winery, initially focusing on new product development and research. His tenure at Gallo lasted for a decade, during which he rose to become the Research Director and Assistant Production Manager, responsible for overseeing winemaking operations. This experience provided Peterson with invaluable insights into the wine industry and laid the foundation for his future leadership roles.In 1968, Peterson moved to Napa Valley, where he took on the role of Winemaster at Beaulieu Vineyard, a prestigious estate located in Rutherford. He served at Beaulieu until 1973, honing his skills and deepening his connection with Napa Valley's terroir. His next major venture was at Monterey Vineyard, where he served as Winemaster and President from 1973 to 1986. At Monterey, Peterson gained recognition for producing innovative wines, including California's first Botrytis Sauvignon Blanc and Botrytis Pinot Noir, as well as unique harvest wines like the January Harvest Gamay Beaujolais and December Harvest Zinfandel.From 1986 to 1990, Peterson served as Winemaster and President of Atlas Peak Vineyards, and was also Chairman from 1989. They serve as both a protective mechanism against cancer, preventing damaged cells from uncontrollable replication, as well as a contributor to tissue dysfunction and age-related pathologies such as cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative disorders, and diabetes. The precise mechanisms that underlie senescence and its contributions to the aging process remain areas of ongoing investigation and debate. In this episode, Matt chats with Sapere Bio co-founder and CEO Natalia Mitin about measuring cellular senescence, using those measurements in the clinic, and the complex and heterogeneous role of cellular senescence in aging and disease. They also discuss Natalia's personal experiences using rapamycin off-label to improve energy levels and immune function, the importance of monitoring biomarkers when using off-label medications, and Natalia's thoughts on "rapamycin for all". Prior to co-founding Sapere Bio, Natalia served as an assistant professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Department of Pharmacology. She spent over two decades developing assays for use in cancer research. Green Party MP Darleen Tana has been suspended amid allegations she is linked to migrant exploitation at her husband's company. A statement from the Greens' co-leaders said Tana was suspended on Thursday afternoon because it was a conflict of interest with her small business portfolio.   The claims first came to light on February 1 when Tana informed the party a complaint had been made to the Employment Relations Authority (ERA) by a worker at her husband's business, E-Bikes NZ.   “On February 9, the party was notified of a second complaint to the ERA,” the statement reads.  These complaints included allegations against Ms. Tana. Ms. Tana has not been a director or shareholder of E Cycles NZ since 2019.”   She was suspended after it became apparent, she may have previously been aware of the allegations. As Green party co-leader, Chloe Swarbrick told Mike Hosking this morning, an independent lawyer is conducting the investigation.   Now these are only allegations - as we know there is to be an independent investigation. If Darleen is lost to politics that would be a shame. She appears to be no dumb bunny - Darleen holds degrees in Chemical Technology and International Business Management with senior leadership experience in European telco (1997-2014), and SME manufacturing/retail in e-mobility here in Aotearoa (2014-2020).  But the Greens don't have all their sorrows to seek in the one day what with Golriz Gharaman pleading guilty to shoplifting yesterday and James Shaw quitting the party. Before everyone gets too uppity about the Greens and their moral failings though, all parties' MPs are living in glass houses, and it would not behoove them to throw stones.  We're only going back a few years - we simply don't have the time to go any further back - and there are some egregious sins that have been committed by MPs across the spectrum from 2017 onwards.    Most of us can commit errors of judgment, even criminal activity of drink driving and continue in our jobs?    Is it the party selection process or is it the fact that we are all flawed and imperfect?  And we have to accept that it's across the political spectrum now.   No one party is blameless or faultless. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Dr. Pankaj Karande is an Associate Professor in Chemical and Biological Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Pankaj was trained as a chemical engineer, and his research aims to apply engineering approaches and technology to solve problems in biology and healthcare to improve the quality and quantity of human life. Projects in his lab span areas such as drug discovery, drug delivery, biomaterials, diagnostics, and more. When he's not working, Pankaj loves to cook, and experimenting with different recipes has been a great way to relieve stress. He was awarded his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Mumbai University Institute of Chemical Technology and his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Pankaj was awarded an Anna Fuller Postdoctoral Fellowship in Molecular Oncology, and he conducted postdoctoral research in the Center for Cancer Research at Massachusetts Institute of Technology before joining the faculty at Rensselaer. Pankaj has received a variety of awards and honors in his career, including the Excellence in Classroom Instruction Award and the Outstanding Teaching Award from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He also received the Alzheimer's Association New Investigator Research Award, the Goldhirsh Brain Tumor Research Award, and a Bronze Edison Award in the Best New Product in Science and Medical Category. In addition, he has been issued multiple patents in the areas of Transdermal Formulation Discovery and Novel High Throughput Screening Platforms. Amidst its sustained efforts to promote diversity and inclusion, Tokyo Tech has decided to introduce special quotas for Japanese-speaking prospective female students applying to the Institute's bachelor's degree programs from April 2024 onwards. Four of Tokyo Tech's Schools — the School of Materials and Chemical Technology, the School of Computing, the School of Life Science and Technology, and the School of Environment and Society — will adopt the new framework in April 2024, while the School of Science and the School of Engineering will do so in April 2025. Desiraju is a structural chemist who has been in the Solid State and Structural Chemistry Unit of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India since 2009. Prior to this, he had been in the University of Hyderabad for 30 years. He has played a major role in the development and growth of the subject of crystal engineering & is noted for gaining acceptance for the theme of weak hydrogen bonding among chemists and crystallographers. His books on crystal engineering (Elsevier, 1989; World Scientific, 2011) and the weak hydrogen bond in structural chemistry and biology (OUP, 1999) are particularly well known. He is one of the most highly cited Indian scientists with more than 430 research papers, 40000 citations and an h-index of 83. He has won international awards such as the Alexander von Humboldt Forschungspreis and the TWAS award in Chemistry. He has guided the Ph.D work of around 40 students. He has edited three multi-author books in solid state and supramolecular chemistry. He is a member of the editorial advisory boards of Angewandte Chemie, Chemical Communications and Journal of the American Chemical Society. He is a former President of the International Union of Crystallography. He is a recipient of an honorary doctorate degree of the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, Argentina, and of the Rayalaseema University, Kurnool. He was awarded the Acharya P. C. Ray Medal (2015) of the University of Calcutta for innovation in science and technology. He was awarded the ISA medal for the science of the University of Bologna for the year 2018. At present, he is the chairman of the Governing Council of the Bose Institute, Kolkata. He has formerly been the chairman of the Research Councils of the National Chemical Laboratory, Pune, and the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology.

I attended the City University of New York/City Tech, where I obtained a BSc in Biomedical Informatics, an Associate degree in Chemical Technology, and a master's degree in Translational medicine from City College of New York. My medical inspiration journey started at the age of 16 when I firsthand experienced a lack of cultural competency. My experience propelled me to explore more in the medical field. I was determined to attend medical school. In doing so, I enrolled in a science major, which I realized was not a requirement. I conducted four years of benchwork research during my undergrad and represented my college in a research exchange program in Colombia. My experience in Colombia was a memorable one. I felt welcomed by the people. I was taught Spanish as the day went by. I was interested in being culturally aware and culturally humbled. All these attributes made me realize I would be a great physician. So, I went on to shadow a physician in 2016 and attended a minority in medicine program at Sidney Kimmel Medical College, where I learned a lot about ways to tackle social determinants of health. Currently, I am an MS2 at St Georges University School of Medicine. I chose to attend SGU because of its resources and how it shapes future physicians."

We hope everyone had a good Christmas! In this episode, Yiming Ha will give an introduction to the forty-four year war between the Mongol-Yuan and the Southern Song. This was one of the longest wars the Mongols had to fight against an adversary and the Southern Song was among the states that put up the longest resistance against the Mongols. This topic is covered very extensively in Chinese language scholarship, but has not received too much detailed attention in English language scholarship. Yiming will talk about the general course of the war, some of the major engagements, the kind of weapons that were used, and some of the implications that this war had on other Mongol conquests and campaigns in Eurasia. Note: There is a mistake at 12:09 - when Yiming said November, it should actually be December. Contributors Yiming Ha Yiming Ha is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of History at the University of California, Los Angeles. His current research is on military mobilization and state-building in China between the thirteenth and seventeenth centuries, focusing on how military institutions changed over time, how the state responded to these changes, the disconnect between the center and localities, and the broader implications that the military had on the state. His project highlights in particular the role of the Mongol Yuan in introducing an alternative form of military mobilization that radically transformed the Chinese state. He is also interested in military history, nomadic history, comparative Eurasian state-building, and the history of maritime interactions in early modern East Asia. He received his BA from UCLA and his MPhil from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Greg Sattler Gregory Sattler is a Ph.D. student in the Department of History at the University of California, Los Angeles. His research focuses on sea merchants in East Asia from the ninth to thirteenth centuries, with a particular consideration of their place in society, their trade networks, and their relationships with government officials. Gregory has recently published an article titled “The Ideological Underpinnings of Private Trade in East Asia, ca. 800–1127” (Journal of Asian Humanities at Kyushu University 6) and he is currently working on two additional manuscripts. COP26 ended in Glasgow, Scotland last week with a final deal. It established a framework for reporting emissions and trading carbon credits, called on countries to step up their targets next year, and included a mention of fossil fuels for the first time. It may sound like science fiction, but it’s coming to your plate in the near future! Cultivating our meat using just a small sample of animal cells is now a reality. Companies like Memphis Meats and scientists like Dr. Mark Post have pioneered this technology to develop products spanning the gamut of chicken, fish, pork, and other meats. Closer to home, companies like Shiok Meats are also cultivating seafood from cells. The future looks bright, but challenges remain. While in India we can leverage our expertise in the bio-pharma and manufacturing sectors to crossover to this new exciting field, there are barriers to entry and distribution in the form of high costs, regulation, and scientific know-how. In this episode of Feeding 10 Billion, Varun and Ramya talk to Dr. Sandhya Sriram of Shiok Meats to find out how she is working on breaking through these barriers to bring cell-based shrimp, lobster, and crab to our plates! Co-founded by Dr. Uma Valeti, a Mayo Clinic trained cardiologist originally from Vijayawada, Memphis Meats' mission is to bring delicious and healthy meats to consumers by harvesting it from cells, instead of animals. Memphis Meats makes its food by sourcing high-quality cells from animals and cultivating them into meat - think of a farm at a tiny scale. They cut some steps from the current process (like raising and processing animals) and bring tasty nutritious meat to consumers - keeping the benefits of conventional meat but that's also better for animals and at scale uses significantly less land, water, energy and food inputs. Their process also produces less waste and dramatically fewer greenhouse gas emissions. SHIOK MEATS : Shiok in Singapore and Malay slang means fantastic and delicious. Shiok Meats is the first cell-based clean meat company in Singapore and South-East Asia. Their mission is to bring delicious, clean and healthy seafood like crustacean meats (including shrimp, crab and lobster) by harvesting meat from cells instead of animals. Their meats are animal-, health- and environment-friendly with the same taste, texture, more nutrients and no cruelty. Cell-based seafood—as opposed to animal-based seafood—can combine developments in biomedical engineering with modern aquaculture techniques. Biomedical engineering developments such as closed-system bioreactor production of land animal cells create a basis for the large scale production of marine animal cells. Aquaculture techniques such as genetic modification and closed system aquaculture have achieved significant gains in production that can pave the way for innovations in cell-based seafood production. Recent research in the emerging field of Epigenomics strongly supports the probabilities of therapeutic transgenerational herbalism. Epigenomics is developing in response to research showing very convincingly that many cancers are initiated and controlled by transmissible extrachromosomal mechanisms. Ryan Drum, PhD has a BSc in Chemical Technology and a PhD in Botany (Phycology) from Iowa State University. While a NATO Scholar, he did postdoctoral studies on Cell Biology using the Electron Microscope and Microcine at the Universities of Bonn, Germany and Leeds, England. For 10 years he taught Botany and related subjects at Universities (UMASS/Amherst, UCLA, WWU). He studied Herbal Medicine with Ella Birzneck, founder of Dominion Herbal College in British Columbia for 12 years, and taught at their summer seminars for 35 years. He has been an adjunct faculty at Bastyr University since 1984, and he lectures at major herbal conferences and herbal schools. GUEST  Atul Kasbekar is an award winning photographer (first Indian to win the prestigious International Food and Beverage Creative Excellence awards 2005, held in London for his work on Kingfisher Calendar), Film producer (His film Neerja won the National Award for the Best Feature Film in Hindi in 2017) and works with the who's who of the Corporate World and Bollywood through Bling! Entertainment Solutions (a Celebrity Management Company) and Corporate Image (a Specialist Imaging Service for top management and spokespersons within an organization). Atul studied at Campion School, Mumbai and Jai Hind College (University of Mumbai) and then joined UDCT (now Institute of Chemical Technology – one of the leading Chemical Engg colleges in the country). But against all odds and advice, he dropped out of UDCT and backed himself to pursue a course in photography in Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara. He has subsequently come back to India and has built a distinguished career in Photography, Celebrity Management, Film Production and more. In our conversation we spoke about the key transition from engineering to photography, the role of resilience in changing trajectories and his reflections on the journey post that. We also spoke about how he has managed to stay relevant and has been able to re-invent himself in new areas as the area of photography has transformed given the onslaught of the digital revolution. "Abs of Ridiculous Ripples," "Hollywood Hills Muscle Monsters" do not give you health or functionality! We use the entirety of our body to live our lives, so to over-build one area leaves the rest functionally weaker.  More importantly, working muscle groups at that level of isolation leads to joint problems and ultimately bone realignment, which can compromise your internal organs. A balanced, purposeful program gets you looking good—that's right, even naked—but more importantly, it brings ease to the simple tasks of living, such as getting up the stairs quickly; playing on the ground or running around outside with your kids; moving that desk. Bending, rotation movements—focus on this type of strengthening directly impacts your quality of life. While training the body, we are also training our mind—literally reestablishing the work of the motor unit. This is the neurological brain-muscle connection.
