Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for April 13, 2025 is: reminisce rem-uh-NISS verb To reminisce is to talk, think, or write about things that happened in the past. // After the official reunion dinner, the old friends gathered at a pub to reminisce about their high school days, now long past. See the entry > Examples: “Our parents would reminisce about their past happiness and point to the oversized photographic portrait taken of them at the county fair sometime in the mid-1970s, before we were born.” — Nora Lange, Us Fools, 2024 Did you know? Do you remember, say, the 21st night of September? Fantastic. Earth, Wind, and Fire does, too, on their classic hit from 1978, “September.” More than remember, the band reminisces—that is, they share details and express feelings about what they remember: dancing, a bell ringing, souls singing, et al. Reminisce distinguishes itself from words like remember and recollect by implying a casual recalling of experiences long past, often with a sense of nostalgia. Reminisce and its relatives reminiscence and reminiscent all trace back to the Latin verb reminisci, meaning “remember.” Reminisci in turn shares roots with mens, the Latin word for “mind.”

Happy New Year my fellow NISs!Wow it's been 3 years doing podcasting. Started in 2021 just after I moved to the US and now we're here. Season 3 was a good run - I learnt to navigate adulthood, living in New York City, and survived corporate America. I definitely feel like I learnt a lot about myself! This season will be all about 'Embracing Change'...and the plan is to welcome any curve balls life throws at me; to embrace it, navigate it and adapt gracefully. This will also be my fourth year in the US as a non-immigrant (someone on a non-immigrant visa), and I can't wait to see what this new season holds. Some changes I'm kinda looking forward to this year - change in job levels/a promotion, change in relationship status, change in spiritual levels (higher calling), change in work location, residential address changes, changes in friendships, changes in lifestyle choices (health & fitness-wise), changes in my emotional health, overcoming fears (driving, skydiving)....and THE LIST GOES ON!If you're also anticipating some changes in your life this year then this season/podcast is for you. I hope you stick with me for the time being, and enjoy the ride. Tell a friend to tell a friend, your girl's beeeeckkkkkkk!!!See you in the next episode(s)!Tolu O.Support the showPlease rate the podcast and leave a review wherever you listen. In Episode 622: UFO Invasion Of Belize, Niss describes her experiences after relocating from Toronto to Belize, In 2016. She embarks on a mystifying journey marked by a series of UFO sightings and unexplained phenomena. These experiences begin with the observation of an almond-shaped light in the sky, leading to numerous encounters with various lights and crafts displaying complex, interactive behaviors. Particularly intriguing are the appearances of portals in the sky, described as slits or door-like openings, through which the UFOs seem to emerge or disappear. Alongside these celestial events, the discovery of ancient Mayan ruins and artifacts on Niss's property in Belize adds an intriguing historical dimension, suggesting a possible connection between the land's past and the ongoing, inexplicable aerial activities. This junction of mysterious UFO sightings, interdimensional portals, and historical artifacts weaves a compelling narrative that blurs the lines between the past and present, the earthly and the extraterrestrial. On this episode of the "Innovating Together," Bridget Burns and Ian Wilhelm interview Dr. Tim Renick, the founder of the National Institute for Student Success. The episode focuses on the issue of high DFW rates in higher education institutions and the need for better data and evidence-based approaches to solve this problem. Dr. Renick talks about the innovative practices that Georgia State University has implemented, such as the Accelerator Program, to improve student success. They also discuss biases within higher education institutions and the importance of recognizing and addressing them to promote innovation and effective solutions. "We're literally failing these students in their classes, and we need to take this as a common responsibility to work out a cooperative solution across the whole institution, rather than saying this is on the faculty member teaching the class to figure out a problem that is a national in scope." - Dr. Tim Renick What you will learn - The problem of DFW rates and the need for change Troubling trends in student performance The effectiveness of using AI-enhanced chatbots in academic courses Leadership and making tough decisions Learn more about Dr. Tim Renick by visiting: About LinkedIn Twitter Learn more about the UIA by visiting: Website LinkedIn Twitter YouTube Facebook This week's episode is sponsored by Mainstay, a student retention and engagement tool where you can increase student and staff engagement with the only platform consistently proven to boost engagement, retention, and wellbeing. In this conversation, we will examine the various types of trauma scores that feature both out-of-hospital and in-hospital to measure trauma – those of anatomical, physiological and combined trauma scores. We will look at why these are important, the three broad types of trauma scores, the origins, reliability and sensitivity of these. We will also examine the pros and cons of the GCS together with the history behind the GCS. We will examine the trauma score, revised trauma score, APACHE and CRAMS scales, Abbreviated Injury Score, Injury severity score, New Injury Severity Score (NISS), TRISS (Trauma and Injury Severity Score), and finally the ASCOT (A Severity characterisation of trauma). We will also examine the limitations to these scores and also some of the more long-term reasons for use. “Are we the problem?” This simple question would lead Dr. Tim Renick to leverage big data at scale and profoundly improve Georgia State University (GSU) students' outcomes. In this episode of An Educated Guest, Todd Zipper, EVP and GM of Wiley University Services and Talent Development, welcomes Dr. Tim Renick, founding Executive Director of Georgia State University's National Institute of Student Success (NISS). Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast. This is the fifth module in the Youth Dhamma Gradual Teachings series, focused on our younger audience looking into BUDDHA'S GRADUAL INSTRUCTIONS TO LAY PEOPLE ON THE BLESSINGS OF RENUNCIATION (nekkhamma ānisaṃsaṃ). This session links with the earlier sessions and confirms the importance of building a foundation of generosity and virtue, and the Buddha's teachings on the heavenly realms and particularly the danger in sensual pleasures. Kamma and Rebirth is a central part of all of these gradual teachings. This next talk in this series will build on top of this and move us further along. In this session we look into: — What does “nekkhamma ānisaṃsaṃ” mean? — Framing our session around the two kinds of happiness — The Buddha's Great Renunciation — Important link between seeing the danger in sensual pleasures and renunciation — What are the different kinds of renunciation — Security (or safety) in renunciation Suttas that are mentioned directly or indirectly in this session: — Sukhavagga (AN 2.64) — Pāsarāsi Sutta (MN 26) — Pabbajjā Sutta (Snp 3.1) — Sukhumāla Sutta (AN 3.39) — Tapussa Sutta (AN 9.41) — Andhakaraṇa Sutta (Iti 87) — Nissāraṇīya Sutta (AN 5.200) — Anusota Sutta (AN 4.5) — Pabbajjapañha (Mil 3.1.5) — Dutiyasikkhattaya Sutta (AN 3.90) — Karaṇīyametta Sutta (Snp 1.8) — Vatthūpama Sutta (MN 7) If you have any questions or comments regarding this talk, please email them to suttameditationseries[at]gmail.com or leave a voicemail message via anchor.fm Bohoma pin to the people who have asked about gradual instructions for lay people over the past few months. We hope everyone had a good Christmas! In this episode, Yiming Ha will give an introduction to the forty-four year war between the Mongol-Yuan and the Southern Song. This was one of the longest wars the Mongols had to fight against an adversary and the Southern Song was among the states that put up the longest resistance against the Mongols. This topic is covered very extensively in Chinese language scholarship, but has not received too much detailed attention in English language scholarship. Yiming will talk about the general course of the war, some of the major engagements, the kind of weapons that were used, and some of the implications that this war had on other Mongol conquests and campaigns in Eurasia. Note: There is a mistake at 12:09 - when Yiming said November, it should actually be December. Contributors Yiming Ha Yiming Ha is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of History at the University of California, Los Angeles. His current research is on military mobilization and state-building in China between the thirteenth and seventeenth centuries, focusing on how military institutions changed over time, how the state responded to these changes, the disconnect between the center and localities, and the broader implications that the military had on the state. His project highlights in particular the role of the Mongol Yuan in introducing an alternative form of military mobilization that radically transformed the Chinese state. He is also interested in military history, nomadic history, comparative Eurasian state-building, and the history of maritime interactions in early modern East Asia. He received his BA from UCLA and his MPhil from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Greg Sattler Gregory Sattler is a Ph.D. student in the Department of History at the University of California, Los Angeles. His research focuses on sea merchants in East Asia from the ninth to thirteenth centuries, with a particular consideration of their place in society, their trade networks, and their relationships with government officials. Gregory has recently published an article titled “The Ideological Underpinnings of Private Trade in East Asia, ca. 800–1127” (Journal of Asian Humanities at Kyushu University 6) and he is currently working on two additional manuscripts. He has received degrees in Taiwan and Japan, and is a proficient speaker of both Chinese and Japanese.

Anissa Perry has been described as "Super-Mom", an "incredible artist", "so cool", a "bad a$$", "an amazing paint instructor"...and so many more wonderfully vibrant descriptions. Her tenacity for life and motherhood are the predecessor for your colorful and bold artwork. Anissa paints with passion and it shows through each and every brush stroke. You do not want to miss my casual conversation with my friend, Anissa Perry. Make sure you are following her on social media and check out her website where you can register to learn from her, as well! https://www.nissnthat.com https://www.facebook.com/nissnthat, https://www.instagram.com/nissandthat/
This week's episode features an expressive painter based just a hop, skip, and a jump away from me outside of Kansas City, Anissa Perry. Her Facebook page Niss & That has grown to over 20k loyal fans who are all excited about her work along with a membership group and all the things. One thing I've noticed about Anissa's following is that they are invested in her art and give so many positive praises letting her know they are rooting for her in the comments. This was another interview that surprised me with the many turns it took throughout starting with her story. Anissa started her art business with the goal of making enough money to leave her marriage and still support herself and 4 boys. For all the single moms out there, this is an interview for you. Let me know what you think of this week's episode with Anissa Perry. https://www.facebook.com/nissnthat/ www.ArtistAcademy.co

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for March 27, 2021 is: reminisce rem-uh-NISS verb : to indulge in the process or practice of thinking or telling about past experiences Examples: After the official reunion dinner, the old friends gathered at a pub to reminisce about their high school days, now long past. "After seeing Giants 2020 first-round draft choice Patrick Bailey arrive for his first major league spring training, fellow catcher Buster Posey said he began reminiscing about his own debut camp in Scottsdale." — Kerry Crowley, The Mercury News (San Jose, California), 18 Feb. 2021 Did you know? Reminisce and its relative reminiscence come from the mind—that is to say, they come from the Latin word for "mind," which is mens. A root related to mens teamed up with the prefix re- to create the Latin verb reminisci ("to remember"), an ancestor of both words. Reminisce is one of several English verbs starting with re- that mean "to bring an image or idea from the past into the mind." Others in this group include remember, recall, remind, and recollect. Reminisce distinguishes itself from the others by implying a casual recalling of experiences long past, often with a sense of nostalgia.

In 2015, Petr Jasek traveled to Khartoum, Sudan, to meet with pastors and other Christians to evaluate how The Voice of the Martyrs—a ministry Petr has served with since 2002—could help and encourage persecuted Sudanese believers. Petr was arrested at the airport on his way out of the country, charged with espionage and other crimes and sentenced to life in prison before the Czech government negotiated his release. The story of Petr’s imprisonment—and the ministry God allowed him inside—is told in a brand new book, Imprisoned with ISIS: Faith in the Face of Evil. You’ll receive a copy of this outstanding book for free when you make a donation to VOM here. Listen as Petr shares his story and updates listeners on his current ministry around the world.

Michael Niss, California Board Licensed Acupuncturist and Herbalist. Director at Universal Family Wellness Clinic. East Asian Medicine (AKA Chinese Medicine): Acupuncture is growing in popularity in Western society—many insurance plans are even covering the treatments. While acupuncture is becoming more and more a part of our common vocabulary around health and wellness, I wondered how many people actually knew just what it was? It's just one facet of Traditional East Asian Medicine which combines needles, bodywork, nutrition, and herbs to treat an individual as a whole. Taking it one step further, East Asian Medicine is a lifestyle and practice. The study of Chinese Medicine is rigorous and vast. Therefore, many practitioners go on to specialize in one area or another, but it is most beneficial ( as far as I'm concerned) to have a full treatment and learn from your practitioner the different ways you can practice this 3,000 year old tradition outside of the office in a well-rounded way. I am an amazing acupuncture salesperson. Because I hate it. And I go. Twice a month, almost without fail, you will find me chock full of needless and totally uncomfortable. The thing is... it works. (For me. You know how I believe each individual is different and what works for me might not work for you, but it really works for me.) I don't know why, and it doesn't matter. The fact is that I walk away from a treatment consisting of needles, cupping, and massage feeling a whole lot better than when I walked in. Tell me your experience below :) Michael Niss Michael Niss is a California Board Licensed Acupuncturist and Herbalist practicing in Los Angeles. He is director at Universal Family Wellness Clinic with his wife Brooke Niss. On the recommendation of a friend, The Universal Family Wellness Clinic was the first place I went four years ago, toting my invasion of rashes and begging for a solution. After a little investigation in the midst of multiple clients coming in and out of the clinic, Michael was kind enough to treat me with herbs and suggest I email him if the rashes didn't get better within two days. They didn't get better, and he was prompt in his suggestion to see a doctor. Something I love about Michael Niss and practitioners like him is the humble ability to say, "I don't know, but here's who you should see," or "I don't know, let me look into it further." Something else I am so grateful for is Michael and Brooke's dedication to keeping their services affordable for those in need. The Universal Family Wellness Clinic is a true gem, and I have consistently seen Michael Niss since finding out those rashes were, indeed, Lyme disease. I consider East Asian Medicine a top player in my recovery from Lyme. #justsaying Contact Michael directly and use my name as a referral: mike@universalfamilyclinic.com www.universalfamilyclinic.com Listen to This Episode if you are Especially Interested In: Acupuncture Cupping—contrary to popular belief, cupping is NOT toxins being pulled from your body Herbs East Asian Medicine Tinctures vs. powders vs. extracts The magic of honeysuckle Michael's herb suggestions for anti-microbial purposes, immune-enhancing purposes, and general happiness Tai Chi Michael's three suggestions for people with chronic illness or pain Pretty dope! Hey gang. This one is for the long term listeners. If you've liked the format and kept coming back for THAT show, well gosh diddly darn it, I'VE GOT THAT SHOW FOR YOU!!! This is the fun 30 minutes we've all grown to prefer. We'll have our audio clips. We'll have some goofing around with Ramona in the middle and the end of the show. I'll do some news reaeding. ...and we'll shave each other's neck hair, how about that eh? Sounds like a good show.
