ARSON ATTACK REPORTED AT FEDERAL BUILDING IN NYC.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Jordan: Over the weekend CENTCOM confirmed the deaths of three US service members, who were killed as a result of the strikes on a barracks building at Muwaffaq al Salti Airbase. Two of the casualties have been identified as 1LT Tyler James Feehan, and Private Isabella Gonzales. The third casualty officially remains classified as Missing in Action as the remains will require DNA analysis to confirm identity, and has not yet been officially identified. A fourth casualty was also reported somewhere in Iraq, which was the result of an Iranian drone strike.Middle East: Following Iranian targeting of the al-Subiya Power Station, Kuwait has begun to rely on portable substations and generators to provide electricity while repairs are made. The scale of the power outages is not known, but Iranian forces have struck several logistical hubs and electrical power plants over the past few days. In Bahrain, Iranian targeting has remained heavy over the weekend, with several ballistic missile strikes reported at American installations around the country.Strait of Hormuz: Several more merchant vessels were struck over the past few days, most of which were tankers attempting to use the southern Omani route instead of the Iranian route. At least one of these vessels resulted in the crew abandoning ship before being rescued.Iran: After these collective strikes over the weekend, American targeting efforts intensified with the latest bombing campaign focusing on the targeting of bridges and civilian roadway tunnels around Bandar Abbas. Many of the roads that lead to the port city are now cut off, with only a few major roadways allowing access to the city. Several bridges have also already been repaired, and the status of others remains unclear until better satellite imagery is available.-HomeFront-New York: This morning an arson attack was reported at the Federal building in downtown Manhattan. One assailant approached the building with a bucket of gasoline, dumping the bucket at the northeast side of the structure. The suspect immediately ignited the pool of gas, which also contained a mix of commercial grade fireworks. The suspect was immediately detained by the plethora of police already on scene, as the accelerant burned on the sidewalk. Analyst Comment: No motive has yet been conveyed regarding this attack, however some of the paraphernalia scattered throughout the scene of the attack appears to be political in nature, opposing ICE.Washington D.C. - This morning, the latest numbers for Strategic Petroleum Reserve levels were released indicating that over the past week, the US has drained the SPR by an additional 5.1 million barrels, to it's lowest level since the Tanker War in 1983.Analyst Comment: Many might have assumed that the US might have re-stocked the SPR during the two-week ceasefire in the Middle East, however very little oil actually made it out of the region during that time, which amounted to only a tiny fraction of US daily usage. Since the war began five months ago, only a very small percentage of oil has exited the region, and the US has been draining the SPR at breakneck pace in order to keep the country going.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Concerning the American casualties sustained over the weekend, it is extremely important to note that the deaths of 1LT Feehan and PVT Gonzales are officially classified under Operation INHERENT RESOLVE (OIR)...not under Operation EPIC FURY (OEFU). Inherent Resolve is the long-standing mission to combat ISIS in Syria, and not in any way linked to the current war in Iran. As a result, the true number of casualties sustained warrants further investigation. This classification could have been an administrative error, but this would also be a way of camouflaging casualty figures. The Defense Casualty Analysis System (DCAS) is the main database for logging all American casualties, which are defined by military operation. In this case, these deaths are not cataloged under either operation yet, adding to the more broad (but also growing) concerns that the database has been concealing the true number of casualties, specifically the numbers of personnel wounded.In fact, while admonishing these concerns as "baseless and malicious accusations" Assistant Secretary of War Sean Parnell directly contradicted the numbers his own department was producing. He stated in an interview with CBS News that roughly 100 personnel had been wounded throughout the war over the past month....while his own database states that a grand total of zero personnel had been wounded for the month of July, and three in June. If this testimony is accurate, this confirms beyond all doubt that the Pentagon is lying about the number of troops wounded during this campaign. Considering that the Pentagon has disclosed a total of 413x soldiers wounded during this entire campaign, ~100x WIA being reported within a month (which also included a two-week ceasefire) is alarming to say the least.The cause of the fatalities reported over the weekend is also important to note as these deaths were very likely preventable. In the days leading up to the ballistic missile striking the housing at this base, the Iranians successfully struck the Patriot battery in Erbil, Iraq. This missile defense site would have been one of the sites providing protection for missiles launched into Jordan. With this battery offline or at least degraded in some way, it is possible that a clear air corridor existed that allowed Iranian ballistic missiles to fly unchallenged through a gap in air defense coverage. If the Erbil strike also damaged the radar array, it is also very possible that the warning time for an incoming ballistic missile would have been reduced, so any defenses at the target base would have been less effective. Obviously, the true scale of the damage to this air defense site would be classified, so in the public eye we have to guess as to how bad it was based on blurry satellite imagery. However the military commanders who knew the systems and did NOT have to guess, were also the same commanders who had the authority to either issue warnings or orders to disperse from the unprotected Containerized Housing Units (CHUs) that were struck by Iran. The failure of command to disperse their soldiers is what led to these fatalities.The very minute that the Patriot battery was struck in Erbil was a major clue that the Iranians were conducting shaping fires of their own...they were striking the air defense sites so as to open up a gap in air defense coverage, and reach out to American positions with their larger ballistic missiles.Though it is usually in poor taste to reflect on failures in the immediate aftermath of the death of troops, in the interest of expediency sometimes uncomfortable conversations must be had in order to prevent further loss of life. If a gap in air defense coverage is what allowed this strike to happen, it is almost certain that this gap still exists and that the danger to American service members is still not mitigated. For ALL American troops in the Middle East, this observation must be noted: If the Iranians are striking air defense sites, the next assumption must be that the Iranians are planning to strike something that would have been protected by that site. In retrospect this is common sense, but even at this very moment, the continued strikes on American positions (and the nearly total lack of fortification efforts at these bases, even to this day) continues to indicate that the Iranian targeting efforts are not being taken seriously by senior American decision makers. Five months into this war, CENTCOM leadership has still not figured out that the Iranians can strike their bases at will, and as demonstrated by the strikes in Kuwait and Jordan, the US is still not digging in, and also not dispersing enough to avoid troops getting killed. No underground fortification efforts have been undertaken at any base in the Middle East, and satellite imagery indicates that no substantial fortifications have been undertaken either. Granting as much leeway to the Pentagon's decision making process as possible, it is possible that no hardening of defenses would have mattered considering the missiles Iran is launching. Drone defense is one thing, but it would take years to build a bunker that would withstand the impact of an Iranian Fattah or Ghadr missile. Nevertheless, when it comes to defending American positions, doing something is better than doing nothing, and concrete does not take half a year to dry.Even if large-scale construction projects are off the menu, ALL military publications, textbooks, and training scenarios dictate and demand what has been obvious since World War One...Dispersion is the name of the game. This is what kept casualties to a minimum in Bahrain, but different theater commanders have different personal initiatives. Some are more proactive with their defense, and others have done nothing at all, besides making sure that all of the vehicles in the motorpool are lined up neatly.Where this goes from here is anyone's guess, but unless radical and immediate changes are made, the United States will continue to suffer casualties. The Washington Post opinion piece argues that higher education is losing public trust because many academic institutions have become overly insulated and ideologically homogeneous. McArdle uses a recent controversy involving anthropology scholars and a university-commissioned report as evidence that academia often responds defensively to criticism, which she believes further undermines confidence in colleges and universities. Two North Dakota men learned through DNA testing that they had been raised by the wrong families after allegedly being switched at birth in 1988. They and their parents are now suing Unity Medical Center, claiming the mistake cost them decades of relationships and experiences. While the hospital acknowledges the switch occurred, it says there is no evidence proving the hospital caused it and that records from that era no longer exist. In 2009, young single mother Holly Cassano shared a small home with her young daughter Alexis in Mahomet, Illinois. On a night when Alexis was at her grandma's house overnight, someone came into Holly's trailer and stabbed her nearly 60 times. The prime suspect, Holly's ex, was the logical focus of the investigation, but he was ruled out by DNA evidence. The killer had left his blood at the crime scene, but no hits were generated when his profile was entered into CODIS. But it turned out that it should have been. Holly's killer, a man no one suspected, would have been identified years earlier if DNA collection protocols had been followed. Not until he was named by forensic genealogy as a suspect were detectives able to connect him to Holly's murder. Two conspiracy theories have trailed the University of Idaho murders since before Bryan Kohberger was ever arrested, and Tony Brueski tackles both in this combined look at the case for True Crime Today. The first theory ruined an innocent man's life before Kohberger was ever named a suspect in this case. The internet decided a grieving young man who'd just lost the woman he loved was responsible, largely because he called her phone repeatedly that morning, something with a completely innocent explanation once you know the full timeline. We break down why the roommates waiting hours to call 911 isn't the smoking gun people think, what their private writings do and don't show, the theory that they were spared for being involved, and why a judge called the internet's alternate suspects rank speculation. The second theory says Kohberger's DNA was planted on the knife sheath left behind at the scene. The lab that tested it says the amount recovered wasn't a faint trace, it was hundreds of times more genetic material than investigators typically find in a case like this one. I'm your host, Kate Shaw. This month I wasn't sure what to cover in this episode, so I decided to just click on four random bookmarks of scientific articles that I've had waiting for attention, and we'll discuss them. We haven't done a four articles episode in a long time! The first article is from March 2022, and it's about the discovery of an ancient cephalopod. Cephalopods include octopuses and squid. Octopuses famously have eight arms, while squid have eight arms and two feeding tentacles. Despite its name, the deep-sea vampire squid is actually more closely related to octopuses than to squid, and a newly discovered fossil is an ancestor to both. The fossil is 328 million years old and was discovered in Montana, in the United States, in 1988 but was only studied recently. Fossils of soft-bodied animals are incredibly rare, and this one is remarkably well-preserved. All of the animal's arms are preserved, including the suckers, but instead of eight arms, it had ten. Scientists have long suspected that the ancestors of modern octopuses and vampire squid had ten arms. The vampire squid has eight arms and two feeding filaments that are vestigial arms. But this is the first fossil found that shows ten arms. The fossil is of an animal with a torpedo-like body shaped like a modern squid. Two of its arms appear to be elongated compared to its other arms. It's about 4 and a half inches long including its arms, or 12 cm. That's pretty much all we know about it now, but hopefully the fossil will reveal more information as it continues to be studied. Our next article is from October 2017 and is intriguingly titled “When teeth grow on the body.” It sounds horrific, but it's actually a study of certain catfish that grow bony plates with tiny teeth on their bodies as defense. Catfish don't have scales, but some species of denticulate catfish that live in South America grow bony plates that act like armor. Many of these plates are covered in thin little teeth–actual teeth, including enamel and dentin, with pulp inside. They're called extra-oral teeth, dermal denticles, or odontodes, and the study determined that they appeared about 120 million years ago in ancient catfish that hadn't yet evolved the bony plates. The teeth regrow when they're lost, and in some species, males grow larger teeth than females and use them to fight other males. Imagine biting someone without needing to open your mouth. Our next article is from November 2020, about more fossils. The fossils were discovered in a collection at the Sedgwick Museum of Cambridge and the Booth Museum at Brighton in England, and were originally found in the latter half of the 19th century by miners. A PhD student at the University of Portsmouth was studying fossilized shark spines from the collection when he realized they weren't actually shark spines. Instead, they were jaw fragments from pterosaurs. Pterosaurs were flying reptiles that filled many ecological niches that birds fill today. One of the species identified from the collection is called Ornithostoma, which means bird mouth, an animal that lived in the early Cretaceous, about 110 million years ago, in what is now Europe. We know very little about it except that it didn't have teeth, but it probably ate fish. But there were some other jaw fragments that didn't belong to Ornithostoma, and in fact don't match up to any known pterosaur jaws. It may belong to a new species, but the fossils are so fragmentary that there's no way to know for sure. The rocks that the fossils came from were completely destroyed more than a century ago during phosphate mining, so unless more fragments are found in other collections, we may never learn more about this mystery pterosaur. Our last article is from July 2022, and I have no idea why I haven't talked about it on the podcast before now. It's about Sato's beaked whale, also called kurotsuchi. It's a type of four-toothed whale with a short beak, and it's dark gray and can grow up to 23 feet long, or 7 meters. It was only identified in 2016 as being different from the two other known species of four-toothed whales, after careful analysis, including DNA analysis, of dead individuals that had been found washed ashore. Until the summer of 2021, no one had ever seen a living Sato's beaked whale. Then some researchers studying orcas spotted 14 of the beaked whales swimming together between Hokkaido, Japan and the Kuril Islands. The scientists recognized that these were unusual whales and they were able to get a small skin sample from one. Genetic testing confirmed that they were indeed Sato's beaked whales. Researchers think the whales may spend at least part of the year in tropical waters, since that's where cookie cutter sharks live and the whales show circular bite scars from cookie cutter sharks. Not much is known about most species of beaked whale, and Sato's beaked whale is especially mysterious. But at least we know it's alive and well right now. IVF stimulation doesn't create egg quality. It reveals it. Most people think an IVF cycle starts on day one of stimulation. Biologically, that's already too late. You were told the protocol would be adjusted. Maybe the dose went up. Maybe they switched you to a different one entirely. And the result was the same, or close enough that nobody could explain the difference. Somewhere in it, you started wondering whether the cycle was ever really the variable. The follicles recruited in your cycle have been developing for weeks to months. They reflect the metabolic and inflammatory conditions that were present during that window. Stimulation doesn't override those conditions. It asks the system to perform under them. The same applies to sperm. His semen analysis came back normal, he got a high five from the REI, and nobody looked at DNA integrity or fragmentation. In this episode, I walk through three patterns we see with clients and why repeating a cycle without reassessing readiness often produces the same result. This episode is about two theories the University of Idaho murders never seem to shake, and Tony Brueski walks through both, live, on the Kohberger case. The first cost an innocent man his reputation before anyone had a name for the killer. The second is still circulating despite a guilty plea. Before Bryan Kohberger's arrest, the internet had already picked a suspect, a young man who'd just lost someone he loved and made the mistake of calling her phone too many times that morning, for reasons that turn out to be completely innocent once investigators laid them out. We cover why the surviving roommates' delayed 911 call doesn't mean what people assume, what their private writings actually reveal, the theory that they were spared because they were involved, and why a judge dismissed the internet's alternate suspects as rank speculation. Then we turn to the sheath conspiracy. Kohberger's DNA on that knife sheath wasn't a faint trace, according to the lab, it was hundreds of times more genetic material than a typical case involves, which the lab itself has stated on the record. We go through the unidentified blood found in the house, the DNA mixture under a victim's fingernails that didn't match him, the buried hair claims, the accusation that genetic genealogy was hidden from the court, and the Amazon order for the exact knife style used. No clear motive doesn't mean wrong man, and a guilty plea layered on top of DNA, phone data, car evidence, and scanner activity looks nothing like the wrongful plea cases people compare it to. The alleged confession to Lance Twiggs is among the strongest publicly available pieces of evidence because it is not presented as a vague secondhand rumor or an isolated statement stripped of context. Twiggs told investigators that Robinson sent messages accepting responsibility for Charlie Kirk's killing, then confirmed the admission face-to-face the following day when Twiggs asked whether what he had written was true. According to the recorded interview played during the preliminary hearing, Robinson became emotional, said he wished he had not done it and discussed surrendering to authorities. Prosecutors also presented an alleged handwritten note left for Twiggs and text messages discussing Robinson's motive, the engraved ammunition and his concern about recovering the abandoned rifle. Taken together, those statements allegedly describe conduct before, during and after the shooting in language attributable directly to Robinson rather than merely placing him near the scene.The confession is especially significant because several details reportedly correspond with independently discovered evidence. Robinson's alleged messages referred to the rifle, the engraved rounds and the possibility that his DNA remained on the weapon, while investigators later recovered a rifle and ammunition matching important parts of that account and presented forensic evidence connecting him to those items. A forensic DNA test usually scans about 20 fixed markers of DNA. It may take a few days but it's enough to differentiate a suspect from the rest of the world with a near perfect level of certainty.   Except for identical twins.   It's not a perfect analogy but think of DNA as a 3 billion letter book. Most people have about 20 chapters that are completely different. For identical twins, their entire book is identical except for about 8 typos. Not 8 different chapters, or sentences, not even 8 different words. 8 letter typos amongst 3 billion letters.   The technology to find these is only available at a handful of labs and costs hundreds of thousands, even millions of dollars. Thankfully, identical twin crime is rare.   Except for Ohio.   A woman who lives alone is raped and murdered in her own home, and the DNA left at the scene traces back to a set of identical twins.   Two 13 year old boys are the main suspects but which twin is innocent?
