Thomas Sowell is one of the thinkers I have recommended for years, particularly for his criticism of simplistic explanations for racial disparities. But I think one of the central arguments in Black Rednecks and White Liberals does not hold up as well as many conservatives assume.In this reaction, I respond to Hunter Matz's discussion of Sowell's thesis on the Joe Rogan Experience and examine the argument that Southern “redneck” culture was largely responsible for the cultural problems of black Americans.I look at the West Indies comparison, the distinction between Appalachian and Southern plantation culture, the influence of the planter class, the history of slavery and Reconstruction, Northern education, Booker T. Washington, the Great Society, and the cultural changes that followed.My argument is not that culture does not matter. Quite the opposite. Culture matters enormously. But history is complicated, and I do not think we can explain modern black American problems by simply pointing to Southern rednecks.As I say toward the end of the video, I have not argued that anything is in anyone's DNA or blamed one group of white people for everything. Two of the motions prosecutors just renewed in the Alex Murdaugh retrial are about what the jury will never hear. Tony Brueski takes the listener mail on them with Robin Dreeke, a retired FBI Special Agent who spent his career in behavioral analysis.The first would exclude evidence of third-party guilt. The state won that fight before the 2023 trial. Winning it again means Murdaugh's lawyers cannot stand up and point at another person as the killer without clearing a bar the court sets.The second would exclude any mention of a polygraph. That one has a history. In an October filing before the first trial, Murdaugh's own attorneys wrote that Curtis Eddie Smith failed a polygraph when he was questioned about whether he murdered Maggie and Paul. Smith has denied wrongdoing in the murders. Prosecutors argued then, and are arguing again, that juries give polygraphers more weight than the science supports.Prosecutors are also asking the court to admit Murdaugh's 2023 testimony at the retrial, seeking a fresh review of digital evidence, and opposing the defense's bid for outside DNA testing.The question listeners keep raising is worth taking seriously. An office that calls its evidence overwhelming is asking a judge to close two doors it already closed once. Prosecutors would say that is standard practice and that speculation is not evidence.Maggie Murdaugh and Paul Murdaugh were killed at the family's Colleton County property on June 7, 2021. Paul was twenty-two. Murdaugh has said he found their bodies.Judge Debra McCaslin has tentatively set the retrial for April 5, 2027, and is handling pretrial proceedings in Lexington County.With the verdicts vacated, Murdaugh stands as an untried defendant again, presumed innocent. In 1971, an off-duty constable walking near an abandoned flint mill beside the River Trent in Burton upon Trent found what he first thought was a piece of cement, until he saw it was part of a human skull. Beneath the earth lay the skeletal remains of a young man, naked, bound hand and foot, and buried in a shallow grave in a kneeling position, with only pink socks and a wedding ring left to suggest he had once belonged somewhere.More than five decades later, he is still known only as “Fred the Head”, a nickname born from the first body part uncovered, not a name anyone who loved him ever gave him. Fingerprints, dental work, facial reconstructions, DNA testing, and possible matches have all failed to restore his identity, making him Staffordshire's oldest unsolved murder victim: a man who was brutally hidden away, but never reported missing by anyone police could find.
Alex Murdaugh is getting a second trial because of a court clerk. That is the whole reason any of these new filings exist, and it is worth keeping in front of you. Tony Brueski takes listener questions with retired FBI Special Agent Robin Dreeke.The South Carolina Supreme Court vacated Murdaugh's 2023 murder convictions after jurors said Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill told them to watch his body language and not be fooled by his testimony. The justices ruled that amounted to a suggestion he was guilty. Hill later pleaded guilty to perjury, obstruction of justice and misconduct in office, and was sentenced to probation.Now prosecutors have moved to put the very testimony Hill commented on in front of a new jury. Their filing asks Judge Debra McCaslin to admit Murdaugh's 2023 trial testimony at the retrial, including his admission that he lied to investigators for roughly eighteen months about being at the kennels the night Maggie and Paul were killed.The same filings renew the state's motions to exclude polygraph evidence and third-party guilt, seek a fresh review of digital evidence, and oppose the defense's request for independent DNA testing.The listener question landing hardest is the circular one. The verdict fell because of what a clerk said about him testifying. The state's answer is to make sure the next jury hears him testify anyway.McCaslin has tentatively set the retrial for April 5, 2027. Lead prosecutor Creighton Waters told the court the state could have been ready before the end of 2026. Dick Harpootlian said the defense has eight new expert witnesses and that DNA work alone could take six months.Murdaugh's convictions were overturned, he awaits retrial, and he is presumed innocent. Day one of Tyler Robinson's preliminary hearing on July 6, 2026, largely centered on prosecutors beginning to construct a timeline of Charlie Kirk's killing at Utah Valley University and establishing the authenticity of the surveillance footage and investigative records they intended to use against Robinson. Former UVU police officer Chris Bagley described the moment the gunshot rang out during Kirk's September 10, 2025 event and the chaos that followed, while Utah State Bureau of Investigation agent David Hull walked the court through the enormous video-review effort undertaken after the shooting. Hull testified that investigators examined hundreds of hours of surveillance footage and ultimately tracked a person they believed was Robinson moving around the UVU campus at several different points that day. Prosecutors introduced surveillance recordings from multiple locations as they attempted to connect the person seen approaching the campus, moving toward the area surrounding the Losee Center, and later leaving the area to Robinson. Three separate videos depicting Kirk being shot were admitted, although Judge Tony Graf determined that their graphic nature warranted restricting their display to the attorneys' and judge's monitors rather than broadcasting them throughout the courtroom. Kirk's widow, Erika, and his parents left the courtroom while the videos were reviewed. Prosecutors also introduced Kirk's autopsy report through Hull, which listed his cause of death as a gunshot wound to the neck and the manner of death as homicideThe defense spent much of the first day attacking the manner in which the prosecution was getting its evidence into the record rather than attempting to disprove the entire prosecution theory at that stage. Kathryn Nester and Robinson's attorneys repeatedly raised hearsay, foundation and authentication objections, arguing that investigators were being permitted to introduce reports, statements and records created by other people without those individuals appearing personally to testify. Judge Graf overruled most of those objections, reflecting the substantially lower evidentiary threshold governing a Utah preliminary hearing, whose purpose was only to determine whether probable cause existed to send Robinson to trial rather than whether prosecutors could prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. One significant exception involved an edited compilation of surveillance footage, which Graf declined to admit in that form and required prosecutors to replace with the underlying unedited material. Hull's testimony also revealed the scope of the prosecution's surveillance theory: investigators claimed Robinson had appeared on or around the UVU campus multiple times on September 10 and that they were attempting to stitch those appearances together into a continuous identification of the alleged shooter. By the end of day one, prosecutors had established the killing itself, the medical cause of Kirk's death, the existence and authenticity of substantial video evidence and the beginnings of their effort to identify Robinson as the person captured in that footage. In the lead-up to Bryan Kohberger's trial, some of the most consequential legal fighting centered on the DNA recovered from the knife sheath found beneath Madison Mogen's body and the investigative genetic genealogy, or IGG, process that investigators used to identify Kohberger as a suspect. Authorities had extracted a single-source male DNA profile from the sheath and later sent the sample to Othram, which developed a SNP profile that could be compared against genealogy databases that permitted law-enforcement searches. Investigators used that information to build family trees that eventually pointed toward Kohberger, after which authorities collected trash from his family's Pennsylvania home and obtained DNA that helped connect his family to the sheath sample. Kohberger's defense spent years seeking the underlying IGG records, laboratory materials, family-tree information and details about how Othram and the FBI conducted the genealogy work. That discovery fight produced multiple motions to compel, closed hearings and court-ordered disclosures under seal as the defense argued that it needed the material to examine whether the investigative process had been scientifically reliable and constitutionally permissible.The fight eventually moved from obtaining the evidence to trying to keep it out of court altogether. Kohberger's attorneys argued that law enforcement had violated his constitutional rights by conducting the IGG investigation without a warrant and by later obtaining DNA through a trash pull at his parents' home, contending that evidence developed from those steps and subsequent warrants should be suppressed as fruit of an unlawful search. Judge Steven Hippler rejected that argument in February 2025, ruling that Kohberger had not established a constitutionally protected privacy interest that made the IGG process or abandoned trash unlawful searches and declining to suppress the resulting evidence. The defense then continued attacking the genealogy evidence through motions in limine, arguing that the State should not be permitted to present the IGG process to the jury and raising separate challenges involving terminology such as “touch” or “contact” DNA and the disclosure of expert testimony. The State maintained that IGG had primarily been an investigative lead rather than the evidentiary foundation of its case, while prosecutors intended to rely on the direct comparison between Kohberger's DNA and the profile recovered from the sheath. By the time trial approached, the DNA battle had therefore become two interconnected fights: whether the genetic genealogy that led investigators to Kohberger had been lawfully conducted, and exactly how much of that complicated investigative history the jury would ultimately be allowed to hear.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.com

NormanTranscriptA bacteriophage, sometimes just called a phage, is a type of virus that only infects bacteria. “Phage” means to devour, and that's what bacteriophages do—they infect and replicate within bacteria that they target, injecting their own genome into that target's cytoplasm, which are all the materials contained within the bacteria's cell membrane.Phages are super-abundant, by some measures more abundant than every living organism, including bacteria, on earth, combined. And they're interesting in that they range from incredibly simple to quite complex, and have at times been used as alternatives to antibiotics, because they attack and feed on bacteria.The use of phages to counter bacterial infections was all but abandoned in the mid-20th century when antibiotics were discovered and commercialized, their production industrialized and the substances themselves proving a lot easier to mass-produce, and a lot more predictable in their utility than phages. Phages were kinda sorta almost understood, but we didn't really get what they were doing or why, so their application often felt more like folk remedies than real-deal science, despite the actual science underlying the practice.Also, phages were primarily used as antibiotic treatments by the Red Army, the Soviet Union's military. So throughout the West, which was rapidly scaling its production of antibiotic treatments, the use of bacteriophages was associated with Stalinist communism, and so the Red-scare, the demonization of anything associated with the Soviet Union, was partially responsible for the shelving of this approach and this realm of research, at least for a while.Much of that existing research was also done in the Soviet Union, and the published documents were thus published in Russian or Georgian languages. And because much of the rest of the scientific publishing world was reorienting around English at this time, that meant these published works were often either ignored or unintelligible to the rest of the scientific community.As with much of our microbiota, the invisibly small viruses, bacteria, archaea, and so on that make up the human microbiome, we have a general sense of how bacteriophages interact with some of what makes us, us, but only a general sense. We know that healthy individuals tend to contain a host of bacteriophages that people who have chronic conditions, like Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis are less likely to have, for instance, and there's a chance that this lack is associated with those conditions—though each person's body composition is unique, and this facet of biology is still relatively obscure; we really don't know for certain what does what, because of how complex these interactions are.What I'd like to talk about today is a recent development in the world of bacteriophages, and why the researchers behind it are both celebrating their accomplishment, and warning about potential dangers associated with the same.—Back in 2025, a nonprofit called the Arc Institute, which has a stated goal of accelerating scientific progress and understanding the root causes of complex diseases, announced the release of a new language model, a new AI system, called Evo 2.The Evo family of foundation models—a foundation model being a type of AI model that's been trained on a huge corpus of data, but which is applicable for all sorts of purposes, including serving as the foundation of large-language models like ChatGPT or Claude—this family of foundation models is open-source and trained on raw genetic sequences, something like nine trillion nucleotides-worth of such sequences, making it distinct from other models in this space that have been trained on descriptions of biological systems, using human language.The initial version of Evo was released in early 2024, and the newest version, Evo 2, which is an upgraded version of the Evo 2 model that is more efficient, so it can be run on less powerful hardware, was released in February of 2026.So while many of the AI systems that non-biologists interact with on a regular basis have been trained on human language-based libraries, showing relationships and interactions between the words we use to communicate, these models have been trained on the fundamental building blocks of life; the nucleotides, Adenine, Thymine, Cytosine, and Guanine, ATCG of DNA, if you remember that from biology class, that are strung together into 64 different possible three-letter combinations. Chains of these nucleotides instruct cells to build proteins out of amino acids, and from that baseline, we get life.We also get non-living things like viruses, which have no cells, metabolism, or independent reproduction, and phages are viruses.And while other AI models have been shown to be great at designing proteins, before 2025 there was little evidence that such systems could design viable genomes: the combination of genetic information that makes up a complete, fully functional organism.That's what Arc decided to tackle with this Evo AI model. And back in 2025, Arc announced that it had successfully validated the first viable genome designs, created using generative AI.These designs were for 16 bacteriophages, which were modeled on a virus that infects E. coli bacteria, and some of them worked just as well or better at infecting E. coli when compared to the actual, real-world phage they were modeled on. They were produced in the real world, a bacteria coaxed into producing them, and then they went on to successfully gobble up the E. coli test subjects they were meant to gobble up, demonstrating that they worked in practice, not just theory.And a new paper published in early August of 2026 by the Arc Institute and Stanford University expounds upon this research, showing the results of an attempt to create entirely new viruses, not just altered existing viruses.Rather than mutating that E. coli gobbling phage, as with the last experiment, tweaking an existing virus, this time they tasked Evo 2 with modeling how that E. coli attacking and eating process works, and then told it to come up with entirely new viruses that operate on the same premise, but which are structured differently; new viruses that eat the same thing in a similar way, but which are distinct from the original model.Ultimately, it gave them 16 viable viruses of very different sizes and structure, all of which were created in a lab and successfully ate the targeted E. coli strain, as intended.This is being seen as a pretty big deal, because while creating viruses in a lab is very modern technology, and mutating those viruses shows a lot of potential for manipulating what we already know works and then tweaking virus behaviors to, perhaps, help us create new medical treatments, the ability to generate, from scratch, entirely new viruses that hold together, with genomes that don't just fall apart when they come into contact with the real world, and which can still do things, like attack bacteria—that opens a lot of new doors, potentially giving us the ability to say, okay, this bacteria is no longer responding to antibacterial drugs that we have available, so let's make a virus that will kill the bacteria instead, and let's make one that won't harm the human that's housing that bacteria.We might also be able to create phages that eat other things, or which in some other way help the human body, or other biological entities, fight off chronic conditions, or recover or rebalance; there's a lot of potential here, because this suggests AI systems trained on the right materials, on the building blocks of life, could generate all sorts of viable biological systems that we can then actually create. It's a huge step forward, compared to systems that are also impressive, but which mostly help us understand the biological world better—like Alphafold, which solved the protein folding problem.Those involved with this research have also been been flagging potential dangers with this development, though, including the potential for creating new viruses and other biological systems that could trigger unpredictable outcomes in other biological systems. What's more British than the British royal family? More Spanish than the Spanish Monarchs? More Norse than the King of Norway? Well, a lot of things actually. In fact, nearly all of the 10 remaining hereditary monarchs of Europe have more German DNA than they do local. For centuries, royals almost exclusively married other, foreign royals. They rarely mixed their blue blood with people native to the Kingdoms they ruled over. What's more, when dynasties died out (often from excessive inbreeding) foreign royal houses put their own seconds sons on the throne, establishing new, entirely alien dynasties. Modern royal families try to brand themselves as throughly native and in touch with the common people. And if they ever spit into a test tube and sent it off for a DNA test, they would probably never publish the results. But, by looking back at their family trees, we can get a pretty good idea of their heritage. When Bryan Kohberger accused Anne Taylor's defense team of coercing his guilty plea, Idaho had to find him a brand-new lawyer, and the search ended at a small general-practice firm in Moscow. Greg Rauch got the appointment on August 3, 2026, through the state's Alternate Counsel Division, the office that hires private attorneys when the public defender has a conflict. The conflict here is unavoidable: Kohberger's handwritten petition, filed July 27, claims his original lawyers convinced him to falsely confess to the University of Idaho murders and hid favorable evidence, allegations that remain unproven and unruled upon. So the man who once had a defense operation reported at more than eight million dollars — including a DNA specialist who spent nine years attacking genetic evidence for San Francisco's public defender — is starting over with an attorney whose caseload runs through bankruptcy court and family court. Rauch's first public comments confirmed he hadn't read the petition or the case file and hadn't spoken with Kohberger. He grew up in Moscow, graduated from the same university the four victims attended, and will work this case surrounded by neighbors who lived through what happened on King Road. The endgame carries a twist worthy of the filing itself: if Rauch succeeds, the plea disappears, the case moves back toward trial, and the death penalty Kohberger bargained away comes back with it. The attorney general has promised his office is ready, and Steve Goncalves says his family is prepared and confident about the outcome. Greg Rauch spent twenty years practicing law in Moscow, Idaho, and nothing in that career resembles what Bryan Kohberger just handed him. Rauch's firm bio covers Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy, landlord-tenant fights, DUI defense, divorce, child custody, wills, probate, and real estate. It credits him with more than twenty trials. It shows no murder case, no capital case, and no petition remotely like the handwritten one Kohberger filed on July 27, 2026 to undo his guilty plea in the Idaho student murders. The state appointed Rauch on August 3 because the public defender's office had a conflict — Kohberger is accusing his own former lawyers of coercing a false confession and burying evidence, claims no judge has ruled on yet. Hours into the job, Rauch admitted to a reporter that he hadn't read the file and had never spoken to the man he represents. The contrast with what came before is the whole story. Anne Taylor's team carried this case for two and a half years, brought in a genetics-trained DNA specialist from San Francisco, and negotiated the deal that kept Kohberger off death row after prosecutors said his DNA was on the knife sheath. The case cost Idaho taxpayers a reported eight million dollars. Kohberger's petition calls that representation a betrayal, and his reward is a solo general practitioner working three hundred miles from the prison where he sits. If the gamble works, the plea dies and the death penalty returns, exactly the outcome the Goncalves family says it wants. In the lead-up to Bryan Kohberger's trial, the court issued an important order governing investigative genetic genealogy, or IGG, material connected to the identification of Kohberger as a suspect. The dispute centered on the genetic genealogy work investigators used after DNA recovered from the knife sheath at the King Road crime scene did not initially identify a suspect through traditional law-enforcement databases. Kohberger's defense sought access to the underlying IGG records, arguing that it needed to examine how investigators moved from the unknown DNA profile to Kohberger and whether the process complied with applicable policies, privacy protections, and constitutional requirements. Prosecutors resisted broad disclosure, maintaining that much of the genealogy information involved private individuals who had nothing to do with the case and that the IGG process had functioned primarily as an investigative lead rather than evidence the state intended to present to the jury.The court ultimately required the state to provide the defense with certain IGG-related materials while placing significant restrictions on their use and disclosure. The judge recognized that Kohberger's attorneys were entitled to investigate the process that had helped focus law enforcement on their client, but also sought to protect the privacy of uninvolved genetic relatives and people whose genealogical information had been examined during the investigation. The order therefore reflected a compromise: the defense gained access to material necessary to evaluate and potentially challenge the genealogy investigation, while sensitive information remained subject to protective measures and limited distribution. Day one of Tyler Robinson's preliminary hearing on July 6, 2026, largely centered on prosecutors beginning to construct a timeline of Charlie Kirk's killing at Utah Valley University and establishing the authenticity of the surveillance footage and investigative records they intended to use against Robinson. Former UVU police officer Chris Bagley described the moment the gunshot rang out during Kirk's September 10, 2025 event and the chaos that followed, while Utah State Bureau of Investigation agent David Hull walked the court through the enormous video-review effort undertaken after the shooting. Hull testified that investigators examined hundreds of hours of surveillance footage and ultimately tracked a person they believed was Robinson moving around the UVU campus at several different points that day. Prosecutors introduced surveillance recordings from multiple locations as they attempted to connect the person seen approaching the campus, moving toward the area surrounding the Losee Center, and later leaving the area to Robinson. Three separate videos depicting Kirk being shot were admitted, although Judge Tony Graf determined that their graphic nature warranted restricting their display to the attorneys' and judge's monitors rather than broadcasting them throughout the courtroom. Kirk's widow, Erika, and his parents left the courtroom while the videos were reviewed. Prosecutors also introduced Kirk's autopsy report through Hull, which listed his cause of death as a gunshot wound to the neck and the manner of death as homicideThe defense spent much of the first day attacking the manner in which the prosecution was getting its evidence into the record rather than attempting to disprove the entire prosecution theory at that stage. Kathryn Nester and Robinson's attorneys repeatedly raised hearsay, foundation and authentication objections, arguing that investigators were being permitted to introduce reports, statements and records created by other people without those individuals appearing personally to testify. Judge Graf overruled most of those objections, reflecting the substantially lower evidentiary threshold governing a Utah preliminary hearing, whose purpose was only to determine whether probable cause existed to send Robinson to trial rather than whether prosecutors could prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. One significant exception involved an edited compilation of surveillance footage, which Graf declined to admit in that form and required prosecutors to replace with the underlying unedited material. Hull's testimony also revealed the scope of the prosecution's surveillance theory: investigators claimed Robinson had appeared on or around the UVU campus multiple times on September 10 and that they were attempting to stitch those appearances together into a continuous identification of the alleged shooter. By the end of day one, prosecutors had established the killing itself, the medical cause of Kirk's death, the existence and authenticity of substantial video evidence and the beginnings of their effort to identify Robinson as the person captured in that footage. Weirdos! We're revisiting Whitechapel in this MASSIVE episode which includes all 5 episodes of Alaina's Roman Empire, Jack the Ripper! Alaina takes us to the streets of Whitechapel for part one of Jack The Ripper, and boy is it a stark picture she's painting us. Whitechapel was dark, damp, dirty and downright desolate at the time Jack The Ripper was roaming the streets. People were living in all kinds of horrible conditions, butchers and slaughterhouse workers were walking around covered in blood and because things were like this, it made the perfect stomping ground for a vicious murderer. Mary Ann "Polly" Nichols was the Ripper's first victim and the main person that we'll go over in part one while Alaina also gives us a background on a couple of other potential early victims. Stay tuned for (we're thinkin') three more! Jack the Ripper part two brings us the absolutely horrifying murder of Annie Chapman. Annie's story, much like the rest of the women who were killed, is incredibly devastating. She was struggling with sobriety when she landed on the shady streets in Spitalfields in the East end and was having a terrible time trying to find work to just get by. Robert Anderson, the head of the criminal investigations department was still on vacation, Sir Charles Warren's ego stepped on the scene and they were not even one step closer to uncovering the culprits identity. Jack the Ripper Part three will cover what is known as, “the double event.” Both Elizabeth Stride and Catherine Eddowes were found killed on this September night. Both women shared a lot in common with the previous two victims. They'd struggled through pretty much their entire lives just to make ends meet and then were met with this as their end. In this part we'll start to entertain the theory that Jack perhaps had some kind of medical background and you'll see just why one might think so once you dive into the episode! Hold onto your butts! Jack the Ripper part 4 is here weirdos! This installment will cover the horrific, and most brutal murder yet: the murder of Mary Jane Kelly. Mary Jane was the youngest victim at just twenty five years old and the only victim that was killed in her own room. Day one of Tyler Robinson's preliminary hearing on July 6, 2026, largely centered on prosecutors beginning to construct a timeline of Charlie Kirk's killing at Utah Valley University and establishing the authenticity of the surveillance footage and investigative records they intended to use against Robinson. Former UVU police officer Chris Bagley described the moment the gunshot rang out during Kirk's September 10, 2025 event and the chaos that followed, while Utah State Bureau of Investigation agent David Hull walked the court through the enormous video-review effort undertaken after the shooting. Hull testified that investigators examined hundreds of hours of surveillance footage and ultimately tracked a person they believed was Robinson moving around the UVU campus at several different points that day. Prosecutors introduced surveillance recordings from multiple locations as they attempted to connect the person seen approaching the campus, moving toward the area surrounding the Losee Center, and later leaving the area to Robinson. Three separate videos depicting Kirk being shot were admitted, although Judge Tony Graf determined that their graphic nature warranted restricting their display to the attorneys' and judge's monitors rather than broadcasting them throughout the courtroom. Kirk's widow, Erika, and his parents left the courtroom while the videos were reviewed. Steven Spielberg doesn't want you to know his aliens aren't real.
