How do different emotions impact everyday life? And what are the kinds of experiences we want and need—in the classroom, at work, and in our own developmental trajectories—to be able to deepen our emotional wisdom so we can make better decisions and have healthier relationships? In this episode of Learning Through Experience, we dig deep into feelings with Dr. Marc Brackett. As he underscored during our conversation, “We all have emotions, whether we want them or not, and they can either help us achieve our goals or derail us.” The founding director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and professor in the Child Study Center at Yale, Marc is on a mission to ensure everyone gets an education in emotion and learns to navigate emotion effectively. After all, emotions are not going away; we have to learn to work with them wisely. Watch this episode on YouTube. With four Mark Grayson and Atom Eve counseling sessions already behind us, we finally reach a conclusion regarding their Invincible relationship. In this episode, we discuss the final two trade paperbacks in Robert Kirkman, Ryan Ottley, and Cory Walker's superhero masterpiece, The End of All Things Parts One and Two. While their ending is definitive, their story seemingly remains ongoing. We must reckon with what we're given and how far these characters have and have not grown since we first met them one hundred and forty-four issues ago.   Also, in this conversation, we establish our last thoughts about our chosen love expert for Mark and Eve, Dr. Marc Brackett, and his book, Permission to Feel: Unlocking the Power of Emotions to Help Our Kids, Ourselves, and Our Society Thrive. Certainly, we'll apply numerous elements from this book to our partnership, but not everything jives with our current journey. Mood meters and meta-emotions, you're absolutely going into our utility belt.   Invincible: The End of All Things contains nothing but Big Emotions, and they're somehow even larger than the usual Big Emotions the series throws at its characters. It's all in the title, and stress levels are extra high when facing oblivion. How do we challenge/embrace life's greatest threats? What can we learn from how Mark and Eve handle them?   Our final Comic Book Couples Counseling Mark and Eve sessions also signify the start of a week-long San Diego Comic-Con International celebration. As you're listening to this episode, we're already traveling to the west coast.   On Thursday, join us back here for an in-depth conversation with writer Paul Cornell, discussing his Comic-Con satire, Con and On. On Friday, we're chatting with Adrian Tomine about his classic graphic novel Shortcomings and the upcoming movie adaptation. On Saturday, Chris Condon and Jacob Phillips return to the show, teasing their new That Texas Blood spin-off series, The Enfield Gang Massacre. Finally, on Sunday, we were joined by Julie Sakai and Stan Sakai, giving us the scoop on all things Usagi Yojimbo and Dogu Publishing.   And, if you haven't already, now's the time to join our Patreon, where superstar cartoonist Daniel Warren Johnson just recorded an epic chat with us about his favorite single-issue comic, The 'Nam #9. A look back at the stand out quotes from this special episode replay on Mark Crowley's Lead From The Heart: “I have science that proves that the heart actually plays an enormous role in influencing human behavior.” [8:23] Mark explains the sentiment behind his original book and new revision Lead From The Heart.“The strength of a heart based leader is to see the potential in others and have the belief in them that they don't have in themselves.” [15:18] Marcel comments on the change that can happen in an employee when working with a leader who truly believes in them and sees what they don't see within themselves. “The heart and the mind are actually connected and the heart actually sends more communication to the mind than the other way around.” [28:25] Mark gets into the science behind his idea of leading from the heart, in which feelings genuinely influence our minds. He shares research from Heart Math that explains that when people are working in a positive, appreciated environment, they operate at their most optimal performance in what they call coherence. “Recognize that just because you have an opening, and someone comes who wants the job is the right fit for it.” [37:43] Mark explains the principle of Hiring from the Heart, having a high performing team is about using great discipline in how you hire.“You have to adapt to your employees; so you have to know what's important to them and know how to support them.” [39:50] Building a Relationship, Mark says, is not just spending time with your staff but getting to know their needs and wants and how you can help them be successful. That builds trust and provides a positive environment. “If you're a manager, you know something about what your employees do all day...  So teach them, coach them, give them your time.” [40:50] Giving Time is an investment that Mark shares as an important responsibility and commitment for leaders.“There is a significant gap between what people feel from their manager and what managers think they're doing for them.” [42:20] Mark encourages leaders to make real Recognition a priority for their employees.“Any act of kindness, coaching, validation, or appreciation… Is a micro manifestation of love.” [55:13] What does it mean to love your people? Mark wants leaders to know that these positive emotions are not the romantic version of love but real, authentic, professional ways to do business and lead. Mentioned in this episode:Mark C. Few comics feel as epic as Invincible by Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley. As such, it presents an incredible challenge for Comic Book Couples Counseling. Where do we start if we want to properly analyze the complicated romantic relationship between Mark Grayson and Samantha Eve Wilkins? For years, the question has gotten in the way of programming our Invincible counseling sessions, but last week, Robert Kirkman himself came to our rescue. We've said this on the podcast before, but we didn't really know each other until we were a few years into our marriage. With that in mind, Kirkman suggested we start our counseling sessions later in Mark and Eve's romantic timeline, just after they became parents. In this massive episode, we begin our new counseling series by jumping into Invincible almost toward its end.  Invincible: Modern Family finds Earth thriving under a dictatorship. SPOILERS for those that have not read the entire Invincible saga - Robot has taken over, and his tyranny seems horrifyingly logical. Mark and Eve cannot throw themselves into combat as a new family, choosing to leave Earth behind and make a life amongst the stars. However, are they proactively prospering as a badass superhero couple, or are they stuffing their emotions and hiding from those dark thoughts that reside within?  Helping us navigate this tumultuous time between Mark and Eve is Dr. Marc Brackett and his book, Permission to Feel: Unlocking the Power of Emotions to Help Our Kids, Ourselves, and Our Society Thrive. Get ready to challenge your meta-emotions, friends. Issues covered in this episode: Invincible 115 - 120, published by Image Comics under the Skyboud Entertainment imprint, released between September 2014 and May 2015. She is also the author of the best-selling book The Anatomy of Anxiety, which is one of my go-to resources on mental health.  Dr. Vora takes a functional medicine approach to mental health, considering the whole person and addressing the imbalance at the root.  In this episode, Dr. Vora and I dive into some ongoing real-world issues from the perspective of a mental health provider. We talk about some of the limits of traditional modalities, the impact of the pandemic, and the ensuing collective trauma. We discuss the root causes of substance abuse, promiscuity, alcohol, the avoidance of uncomfortable feelings, and resiliency. We discuss the physiology of the brain and gut and how they pertain to food addictions. We speak about gender differences with an emphasis on the impact of synthetic oral contraceptives on inflammation, micronutrient depletion, changes in the gut microbiome, and libido. We also talk about changes that occur in the body during perimenopause and menopause.  I loved having this discussion with Dr. Vora! You can follow her on social media and check out her book, The Anatomy of Anxiety!  Stay tuned for more! IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: As a society, we have experienced a lot of stress and loss recently. Dr. Vora discusses the themes she observed with her patients and loved ones over the last two years. Dr. Vora describes the two extremes she noticed in parents during the pandemic. How should parents deal with their feelings in front of their kids in difficult times like the pandemic? Ways to cultivate and support resilience. Dr. Vora explains what happens when we fail to process or articulate our feelings or avoid uncomfortable feelings. Addiction in adults is often a way to self-soothe or seek comfort. At times, parents should step back and allow their children to process and work through their problems. Sometimes, the big feelings people experience are physiological and avoidable. How do blood sugar dysregulation and hypoglycemia or high blood sugar and insulin resistance impact our feelings and behavior? How gut health pertains to our brain and anxiety. Why do we crave gluten and dairy? Blood sugar is critical to the functioning of the brain. Finding a balance between food addictions and orthorexia. Every child is different. So is every parent. And yet, helping our children develop their emotional literacy skills is one thing we can do to help them thrive. You can begin by taking a moment to calm yourself when you son's behavior is out of line or upsetting. Then, get curious. Often, another need lurks beneath. When you and your son are calm, try saying something like, "I noticed..." State your observation; allow some space and time for your son to respond. "'I notice' takes the judgement out of it," Kris says. And even if your son chooses not to respond in the moment, your words convey that you see and care about him. In this episode, Jen, Janet, & Deborah discuss: Why striving for perfection parenting is wasted effort -- and what you should strive for instead The link between emotional literacy & boys' behavior Letting boys tell their story (vs. making assumptions about their behavior) Tailoring your communication to your boy's temperament (whether he's an introvert or extrovert) The value of the village Communicating with teachers Helping kids understand unconditional love The power of awe and wonder Links we mentioned (or should have) in this episode: parenthood365 -- Deborah's website I Love You All the Time, by Deborah Farmer Kris You Have Feelings All the Time, by Deborah Farmer Kris You Are Growing All the Time, by Deborah Farmer Kris You Wonder All the Time, by Deborah Farmer Kris Permission to Feel: Unlocking the Power of Emotions to Help Our Kids, Ourselves, and Our Society Thrive, by Dr. Marc Brackett (book mentioned at 13:11) Awe Might Be Our Most Undervalued Emotion. In this episode, we discuss how to express feelings effectively. Specifically, we unpack how to better Express and Regulate emotions in a healthy way to help grow and deepen our everyday relationships. You'll hear about which communication patterns to avoid and which ones to focus on to help us increase our emotional intelligence.  TalkDoc and the team help us visualize what Expressing and Regulating looks like by role playing with each other.  And, if you are looking for TC4G (trading comfort for growth) there is more than enough of it to go around in this episode - practical steps you can take to put what you learn into action right away. Music by epidemic sound. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ EP 55: All the Feels - How to Express Your Feelings Experts : Dr. Marc Brackett Tools : RULER system for increasing Emotional Intelligence (Brackett). His book: Permission to Feel: Unlocking the Power of Emotions to Help Our Kids, Ourselves, and Our Society Thrive (2019) R -Recognition of emotion in oneself   U -Understanding of emotions involves knowing the consequences and causes of our feelings.  L -Labeling the feeling properly is equally important. E -Expressing feelings demands the presence of someone who wants to listen to you. R -Regulation of emotions doesn't entail suppression, repression, or denial, all of which don't allow you to move past emotions.  TC4G (TRADING COMFORT FOR GROWTH) : Avoid confusing words, “I am a little mad” “I am pretty excited” Avoid confusing phrases, sometimes people say roundabout phrasing like, “well if you aren't doing anything this weekend, you could drop by” – hard to know what this means. Instead say “I feel alone” Focus on specific circumstances, rather than whole relationships, Adlers says “instead of saying I resent you, say, “I resent you when you don't keep your promises. Rather than saying, “I am bored with you” say “I am bored when you talk about money.” Expand the range: Discuss multiple emotions Understand the context: is this the right place to share this? Aristotle, “Anyone can become angry. That is easy. But to be angry with the right person to the right degree, at the right time, for the right purpose, and in the right way. This is not easy.” Own the feelings, instead of saying, “you make me so mad” say “I am angry” etc. Use XYZ formula: (Hocker and Wilmot) When you do X, In situation Y, I feel Z When you laugh (X), when I am telling you a serious problem (Y), I feel disrespected(Z). When you frown (X), when I am telling you about work (Y), I feel unimportant (Z).

Of course events and holidays are one thing but what if you always eat a snack at 3pm or can't go to the movies without thinking about movie theater popcorn? It's ALL HERE. And maybe your solution to foods that trigger you is to simply not have them in your home. That can work, sure, but  Jenn advises we eventually want to move past that. Marc Brackett is a professor in Yale University's Child Study Center and founding director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. In his 25 years as an emotion scientist, he has developed a remarkably effective plan to improve the lives of children and adults - a blueprint for understanding our emotions and using them wisely so that they help, rather than hinder, our success and well-being. The core of his approach is a legacy from his childhood, from an astute uncle who gave him permission to feel. He was the first adult who managed to see Marc, listen to him, and recognize the suffering, bullying, and abuse he'd endured. And that was the beginning of Marc's awareness that what he was going through was temporary. He wasn't alone, he wasn't stuck on a timeline, and he wasn't "wrong" to feel scared, isolated, and angry. Now, best of all, he could do something about it. In the decades since, Marc has led large research teams and raised tens of millions of dollars to investigate the roots of emotional well-being. His prescription for healthy children (and their parents, teachers, and schools) is a system called RULER, a high-impact and fast-effect approach to understanding and mastering emotions that has already transformed the thousands of schools that have adopted it. RULER has been proven to reduce stress and burnout, improve school climate, and enhance academic achievement. This book is the culmination of Marc's development of RULER and his way to share the strategies and skills with readers around the world. It is tested, and it works. Permission to Feel: Unlocking the Power of Emotions to Help Our Kids, Ourselves, and Our Society Thrive (Celadon, 2019) combines rigor, science, passion and inspiration in equal parts. Too many children and adults are suffering; they are ashamed of their feelings and emotionally unskilled, but they don't have to be. Marc Brackett's life mission is to reverse this course, and this book can show you how. Debbie Sorenson is a psychologist in Denver and the host of the excellent podcast Psychologists Off the Clock. Ashanti Branch is one of the healthiest models of conscious masculinity I've met, and an inspirational example of how the universe can support you with “hidden hands” (see Joseph Campbell) when you listen to that song in your heart about what your reason for being (IKIGAI) is. Raised by a single mother on welfare in Oakland, California, Ashanti overcome every statistic he shouldn't have by going on to complete an engineering degree at California Polytechnic – San Luis Obispo. Highly successful and even wealthy in his first career as an engineer, Ashanti found himself tutoring struggling students, very reluctantly giving up his Saturday mornings at first, when a new voice began to whisper from his heart. He tried to avoid it by doubling down on his engineering career, but before long, that voice became so compelling that Ashanti found himself in his second career, as a teacher. In his first year teaching, he started The Ever Forward Club to provide a support group for African American and Latino males who were underachieving, and who did not have space for healthy expression. From there, Ashanti's powerful mission to change the way students interact with their education was put in motion. After his work was featured in the documentary "The Mask You Live In," and he participated in fellowships at the Stanford d.school, Campaign for Black Male Achievement, and The Gratitude Network, Ashanti's mission has become a non-profit, and a movement he has now launched as the #MillionMaskMovement with a goal of connecting people all over the world in a self-reflective experience that helps people visualize and realize, “I am not alone.” Links and Resources Million Masks Website: https://100kmasks.com/ Ever Forward Club Site: https://everforwardclub.org/#overview TOTM - Ever Forward Virtual Offerings: https://youtu.be/zqVcGUDZXWU #JustinRelates Why Join the #MillionMaskMovement A students testimony: https://youtu.be/_VRs5RqqKjc "I Remember I Went Back" | Taking Off The Mask Testimonial: https://youtu.be/qIPbNrGoxxs The Mask You Live In - Trailer: https://youtu.be/hc45-ptHMxo The Scene where the mask activity was first facilitated: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jaVm7fQ4m4&t=2s Beyond Men and Masculinity Trailer: https://youtu.be/0OXauwwLN4o Permission to Feel: Unlocking the Power of Emotions to Help Our Kids, Ourselves, and Our Society Thrive https://www.amazon.com/Permission-Feel-Unlocking-Emotions-Ourselves/dp/1250212847 More on Ben and NuMinds NuMinds: https://www.numindsenrichment.com/ Ben: https://linktr.ee/benjaminkoch --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/numinds-enrichment/support

Dozens of times a week, we ask people, “How are you?”. Given this fact alone, you'd think our society was very interested in how people feel. But, all of us know that this question generally doesn't get an honest answer. For many of us, it may feel risky to get in touch with our feelings, let alone to express them to others. If we're honest with ourselves, we might even feel uncomfortable if we got a more genuine answer. Our guest today argues that this tendency to avoid feelings can be a real disadvantage—particularly to our children—and shares the “emotion skills” that can enable people to thrive and be healthy. Host David B. Feldman interviews Dr. Marc Brackett, psychologist and author of Permission to Feel: Unlocking the Power of Emotions to Help Our Kids, Ourselves, and Our Society Thrive.
