Anthony Georgiades shares the future of venture capital in the age of AI. He shares his journey from an early failed startup to becoming a deeply technical investor focused on frontier technologies. He emphasizes the importance of technical literacy in venture capital, especially when evaluating deep tech. We also touch on the economic and existential risks of AI, emphasizing the need for governance, transparency, and decentralized control, while pointing to robotics as a slower-moving but ultimately transformative force in the physical economy. We discuss... Anthony Georgiades shared his background in business, venture capital, and a technical pivot into computer science and robotics. A failed early startup experience drove him to gain deeper technical proficiency to better assess and build emerging technologies. He emphasized the importance of deeply understanding deep tech and being able to speak fluently with technical founders. Web3 use cases are becoming more real, with examples like decentralized AI inference, verifiable model outputs, and on-chain computation. He highlighted the importance of decentralized GPU marketplaces and AI-native blockchains as potential disruptors. Web3's decentralized financial infrastructure enables instant, global, and permission-less access to financial instruments. Banks remain entrenched due to regulatory, compliance, and sovereign monetary systems, despite growing disruption. Crypto is unlikely to replace fiat overnight due to legal, infrastructure, and fractional reserve complexities. AI is seen as the most inevitable trend, already impacting industries across the board. The exponential development of foundation models and the importance of proprietary data are creating a winner-take-most dynamic. Web3, though earlier in development, is viewed as more disruptive due to its potential to create new markets and rewrite institutional frameworks. He acknowledged real short- and long-term risks with AI, including economic displacement, misinformation, and loss of control. Existential AI risk stems from misaligned goals, where intelligent systems could pursue objectives with harmful side effects. Open models, auditable systems, and decentralized infrastructure are key to safer AI development. Robotics is considered the “final frontier” of disruption, especially as intelligent machines become capable of operating in the physical world. Use cases like autonomous farming are emerging as impactful applications of robotics innovation. Hey listeners, welcome back!
The rental market could finally be returning to stability after a wild past four years. Since 2020, we've seen rent prices skyrocket almost overnight, with huge asking price increases for single-family homes, multifamily apartments, and everything in between. But that trend quickly reversed as the fight against inflation began, mortgage rates rose, and would-be homebuyers sat still, not knowing whether to stay renting or search for a home. But, a return to “equilibrium” may be coming soon, and that's good news for landlords and renters alike. To break it all down, Zumper's Anthemos Georgiades joins the show to share his team's latest rent data. Anthemos brings some surprisingly good news for landlords, from new month-over-month rent growth data to consumer preferences shifting to a more renter-focused lifestyle; now may be the moment landlords have been waiting for as renter demand looks promising and rates stay high. We'll also discuss the inflation lag effect our rental market has caused and how to stay on top of current rent prices. Has the dream of homeownership died? And if so, how do YOU attract the long-term renters who want to make a home out of your house (while paying YOU rent!)? Stick around for this rental market update every landlord needs to know about. Optimising your baby's development is something almost all parents worry about at some stage. Maybe you've been at a birthday party, or you're on a play date or even just at the park and you start comparing (or bragging) about your baby reaching milestones ‘early.' It leaves even the most relaxed parent wondering whether they are doing enough of the right thing to give their baby the best start in life? What is truly good for our child's development? And can we beat nature by nurturing any skill in our little ones? In the latest episode of SENSE by Meg Faure, Meg sits down with fellow mom, podcaster and media personality, Bailey Georgiadis to talk about optimising your baby's development. Meg tackles the question of Nature vs Nurture. She explains the two critical ingredients in your child's natural ability as their genetic make-up and the impact of your pregnancy. She describes ‘nurture' as a mechanism to bring out your little ones' potential. Meg goes on to share with Bailey the interplay between these two contributors to a baby's development. Bailey asks Meg about milestones – why they exist and when is it time to worry if you've noticed a delay in reaching a certain milestone. Meg talks about the different types of development, i.e. gross motor, fine motor, social/emotional, cognitive and language development. Meg shares her insights into the significant obsession parents can develop about reaching milestones. She discusses what's normal and how to take a measured approach to milestones. They also chat about a baby's natural social-emotional milestones starting with primary maternal preoccupation. Meg explains that in the early days, babies bring their sensory personality to the mix, while parents bring their ability to calm their little one (see the Surviving the Fourth Trimester podcast for more). Meg refers to British pediatrician and psychoanalyst, Donald Winnicott's theory of Good enough parenting and encourages parents to give themselves a break. ‘Don't strive to be the perfect parent – it does more harm than good.”
Podcaster, mom and media personality, Bailey Georgiadis is back for this week's episode of Sense by Meg Faure. Bailey asks Meg some great questions about the 4th trimester or those first 3 months after birth. Meg talks about mimicking the womb world for newborns, and Bailey asks her about that thing we all fear…Colic. Meg unpacks colic – what it is and isn't, how it differs from reflux, she also shares the 7 S's of soothing and why soothing strategies are your best friend in the 4th trimester. Are you pregnant or parent to a newborn? Listen now for good sense and great advice about surviving and thriving in those first precious months of parenting. ___________________________________ CONNECT WITH MEG FAURE Web: megfaure.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MegFaureOfficial Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/megfaure.sense/ Parent Sense mobile application: Web: https://parentsense.app/ Download via Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=tech.bitcube.parentsense Download via iOS: https://apps.apple.com/za/app/parent-sense-baby-tracker/id1502973851 _________________________________
My guest today is Anthony Georgiades, the Co-founder of Pastel. Pastel Network is the first fully dedicated, decentralized digital art platform allowing users to register, store, and trade ‘provably rare' assets. The network is a fork from Z-cash, running the Proof-of-Work (PoW) algorithm Equihash and also supports Masternodes from Dash, which provide computational resources to the network to support asset registration, distribution, and permanent storage. Pastel gives creators a way to connect with their fans by selling limited edition NFTs that can be registered and traded on Pastel's blockchain without the high fees of other NFT platforms. Create timeless collections, build a following of loyal fans, and earn perpetual royalties on future sales. Anthony Georgiades is also a General Partner at Innovating Capital, a technology fund focused on disruptive companies and digital assets. Innovating Capital has incubated Pastel Network since day one. Anthony previously spent time on the investment team at First Round Capital and on the operations teams of various startups. He studied finance, management, and computer science at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton and engineering schools. In our conversation we discuss a variety of topics centered around Web3, a few major topics included Pastel Network, the technology behind NFTs, the value proposition of Web3, and much more. We begin our conversation by discussing the Pastel Network. Anthony breaks down how Pastel is disrupting the NFT space. We discuss how Pastel combined the various innovations from other blockchains and combined them to create a truly revolutionary NFT platform with the goal of storing the value on their platform for the next 100 years. Our conversation shifts slightly to discuss why the biggest problem facing the NFT space is how NFTs are stored and how Pastel has created the first fully decentralized storage solution. Our conversation becomes very interesting when we begin discussing the future use cases of NFTs and why NFTs will be ubiquitous throughout society. Another very important discussion topic was how the technology behind NFTs. Anthony does an excellent job at explaining why the technology is so revolutionary and how the technology works at a technical level. We also discuss the value proposition of Web3 and the importance of decentralization. Anthony explains why VCs are fundamental to the value creation process and why they are needed for the continued innovation process of technology. Our final discussion topic centered around what are the best investing practices he follows and advice he would give to people looking to invest in crypto projects. Please enjoy my conversation with Anthony Georgiades. -- ParaSwap: If you want to make a swap at the best price across the DeFi market, check out https://untoldstories.link/paraswap. Have you heard of sensory personalities? Do you know what they are and why Meg Faure calls it the secret to successful parenting? In this week's episode of Sense by Meg Faure, Meg is joined by Bailey Georgiades to talk about how our little ones relate to their world through their senses and how to adjust our parenting style to respond to our baby's needs. Meg is an expert in Sensory Integration and it's the basis for much of her work. Listen to this eye-opening episode now for powerful insights into successful parenting! ___________________________________ CONNECT WITH MEG FAURE Web: megfaure.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MegFaureOfficial Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/megfaure.sense/ Parent Sense mobile application: Web: https://parentsense.app/ Download via Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=tech.bitcube.parentsense Download via iOS: https://apps.apple.com/za/app/parent-sense-baby-tracker/id1502973851 _________________________________
Today on the Fortune Teller Podcast, we have Anthony Georgiades Co-Founder of Pastel Network. The Pastel Network is a peer-to-peer decentralized platform to securely register, trade, and collect NFTs. One of Pastel's core features is the Negligible Fees. With the high gas costs on the Ethereum Blockchain, some have to spend $500 worth of ETH to make a single artwork NFT, which ends up excluding most digital artists in the world. The Pastel Network keeps the cost to register an artwork minimally below $.05, ensuring that transacting is affordable irrespective of network exhaustion or the underlying price of PSL. We ensure low fees in Pastel with a mechanism that automatically adjusts the required registration fees based on how much the mining difficulty has increased for PSL over time. Users incorrectly believe that NFTs are minted and exist in a decentralized manner on the blockchain. However, NFTs are really only non-fungible to the extent they refer to the actual token, not ownership of the rare asset itself. Storing an NFT's metadata and assets on a centralized server or using IPFS for the maintenance of files makes any creator or owner vulnerable to the loss of assets if the centralized entity shut down or if the protocol links were to go dead. Pastel ensures that the digital asset itself is uploaded, verified, and registered on the Pastel blockchain — rather than just the token with which it is minted. Via smart tickets on the Pastel ledger, one can store their masterpieces in a distributed fashion across Supernodes, as opposed to just ensuring the token is non-fungible. The sophisticated storage layer, leveraging the RaptorQ fountain code algorithm, breaks an asset up in a series of redundant chunks. Each chunk has certain random fragments of the combined file and is distributed redundantly across participating Supernodes. Pastel is user-friendly, with a PastelID, a system that ensures creators and collectors can share their PastelID key on their website or various social media account, as opposed to the confusing string identifiers associated with pub/priv key pairs. Every aspect of Pastel was carefully designed to account for intuitive user-flow and understanding. Pastel uses the zk-SNARK system introduced by Zcash, allowing for provably secure “shielded” (private) transactions that can be validated by the network without disclosing the receiving address. PSL is the native cryptocurrency on the Pastel Network, allowing participants to securely register and store their assets on the Pastel Network. The data written inherits all the security properties of the Bitcoin-like cryptocurrency, providing a solid foundational layer. For more, visit https://pastel.network/ -- The Fortune Teller podcast is a discussion between industry leaders in blockchain and financial technologies. The podcast focuses on the development of blockchain-based financial services and outlines the current state of the industry and future predictions for the adoption of decentralized finance. In this episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we caught up with Marieke Oudelaar from the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry to talk about her work on chromatin organization during development and disease. Marieke Oudelaar and her team focus on on developing high-resolution Chromosome Conformation Capture (3C) based techniques, like low-input Capture-C, Tri-C, and Tiled-C. Those techniques are then used in combination with other genomic techniques, genetic perturbations, and computational approaches to investigate the 3D structure of chromatin in development and disease. The team focused on the interplay between genome organisation and regulation during mammalian differentiation, and how perturbations in these processes contribute to human disease, including cancer. Phil is joined by Organizational Effectiveness and Talent leader Kate Georgiades to discuss how to help people let go of the past. All big change initiatives require people to think, act and behave differently. To do so, they must let go of current ways of working that are familiar, comfortable and have contributed to their success. If they don't, they hold onto what they know, become fearful of what they don't know, and jeopardize adoption of the change that secures its benefits. So, how do you help people let go of the past so they grab hold of their future? You can reach Kate at: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kategeorgiades/

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.09.06.284679v1?rss=1 Authors: Su, M. P., Georgiades, M., Bagi, J., Kyrou, K., Crisanti, A., Albert, J. Abstract: Background: The release of genetically modified mosquitoes which use gene-drive mechanisms to suppress reproduction in natural populations of Anopheles mosquitoes is one of the scientifically most promising methods for malaria transmission control. However, many scientific, regulatory and ethical questions remain before transgenic mosquitoes can be utilised in the field. Mutations which reduce an individual's reproductive success are likely to create strong selective pressures to evolve resistance. It is thus crucial that the targeted population collapses as rapidly and as completely as possible to reduce the available time for the emergence of drive-resistant mutations. At a behavioural level, this means that the gene-drive carrying mutants should be at least as (and ideally more) sexually attractive than the wildtype population they compete against. A key element in the copulatory negotiations of Anopheles mosquitoes is their acoustic courtship. We therefore analysed sound emissions and acoustic preference in a doublesex mutant previously used to successfully collapse caged colonies of Anopheles gambiae s.l.. Methods: The flight tones produced by the beating of their wings form the signals for acoustic mating communication in Anopheles species. We assessed the acoustic impact of the disruption of a female-specific isoform of the doublesex gene (dsxF) on the wing beat frequency (WBF; measured as flight tone) of both males (XY) and females (XX) in homozygous dsxF- mutants (dsxF-/-), heterozygous dsxF- carriers (dsxF+/-) and G3 'wildtype' dsxF+ controls (dsxF+/+). To exclude non-genetic influences, we controlled for temperature and measured wing lengths for all experimental animals. We used a phonotaxis assay to test the acoustic preferences of mutant and control mosquitoes. Results: A previous study demonstrated an altered phenotype only for females homozygous for the disrupted dsx allele (dsxF-/-), who appear intersex. No phenotypic changes were observed for heterozygous carriers or males, suggesting that the female-specific dsxF allele is haplosufficient. We here identify significant, dose-dependent increases in the flight tones of both dsxF-/- and dsxF+/- females when compared to dsxF+/+ control females. Flight tone frequencies in all three female genotypes remained significantly lower than in males, however. When tested experimentally, males showed stronger phonotactic responses to the flight tones of control dsxF+/+ females. While flight tones from dsxF+/- and dsxF-/- females also elicited positive phonotactic behaviour in males, this was significantly reduced compared to responses to control tones. We found no evidence of phonotactic behaviour in any female genotype tested. None of the male genotypes displayed any deviations from the control condition. Conclusions: A key prerequisite for copulation in anopheline mosquitoes is the phonotactic attraction of males towards female flight tones within large - spatially and acoustically crowded - mating swarms. Reductions in acoustic attractiveness of released mutant lines, as reported here for heterozygous dsxF+/- females, reduce the line's mating efficiency, and could consequently reduce the efficacy of the associated population control effort. Assessments of caged populations may not successfully reproduce the challenges posed by natural mating scenarios. We propose to amend existing testing protocols in order to more faithfully reflect the competitive conditions between a mutant line and the wildtype population it is meant to interact with. This should also include novel tests of 'acoustic fitness'. In line with previous studies, our findings confirm that disruption of the female-specific isoform dsxF has no effect on males; for some phenotypic traits, such as female flight tones, however, the effects of dsxF appear to be dose-dependent rather than haplosufficient. Going into this episode, we thought desert rock and stoner rock were the same thing. We were wrong. We thought the "desert rock sound" started with the Sabbath influence lowend fuzzed riffs of Kyuss. We were wrong on that as well. There is an important lesson here - makes sure you are open to preconceived notions being challenged because the truth maybe more interesting than the vision in your head. That wasn't only the case for us. We invited on Jason Georgiades, director of Desert Age, a film about the 80s and 90s desert rock scene, who also had to shift his thinking once he started digging into history, talking to the people, and hearing the music of the California desert around Palm Springs. You've heard of Queens of the Stone Age and Kyuss, but what about Across the River and Yawning Man? Or Unsound or Target 13? We talk the bands, the landscape, the (lack of) places to play and the illegal substances that made the desert rock scene of the truly most original in punk, alternative and hard rock. When Harris Georgiades became Finance Minister of Cyprus a year ago some said he had been handed poisoned chalice. He has had to preside over tough austerity measures that are driving poverty levels in the country. The economy is shrinking, unemployment will perhaps reach 20% this year and wages are being slashed. These were the tough conditions of a 10 billion Euro bailout granted last year with the Troika of the European Central Bank, the EU and the IMF to avoid a collapse of the banking system in Cyprus. So why then does the Finance Minister believe that the economy is proving more resilient than expected? Is he being too optimistic?Picture: Harris Georgiades, Credit: AP Photo/Petros Karadjias
