What Happened Next: a podcast about newish books

My guest on this episode is Deborah Dundas. Deborah is a writer and journalist who has worked as a television producer and as the Books Editor for the Toronto Star, where she is currently an opinion editor. Her work has appeared in numerous publications, including Maclean's, the Globe and Mail, the National Post, Canadian Notes and Queries, the Belfast Telegraph, and the Sunday Independent. She also teaches Creative Non-Fiction at the University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies. Deborah's first book is On Class, which was published by Biblioasis Books in 2023. That book was A Hamilton Review of Books Best Book of 2023 and was shortlisted for the 2024 Speaker's Book Award. The Winnipeg Free Press called On Class “a nifty, provocative little book.” Deborah and I talk about her work on the most picked-over and discussed literary story of the decade, which are the revelations about the late Alice Munro and her family, and about how she initially wanted to say no to working on that story. We talk about some of the progress and great conversations about class she has seen witnessed publishing her book, and how she feels just a little less like an outsider in Canada's literary culture.   This podcast is produced and hosted by Nathan Whitlock, in partnership with The Walrus. Music: "simple-hearted thing" by Alex Lukashevsky. Used with permission.

Josie, a co-author of the book, "Parents with Inconvenient Truths about Trans" is our guest this week on The Hamilton Review. In this very important conversation for parents, Josie discusses the book as well as her own experiences with her child.  Don't miss this critical episode - share with your family and friends. A medical scandal is currently unfolding across Western liberal societies. As Parents with Inconvenient Truths about Trans reveals, the primary victims are vulnerable, socially awkward kids with normally developing bodies who fall for the Internet-fueled promise that they can solve their emotional, psychological, or physical discomfort by adopting an opposite-sex identity. With deep reservations about the new gender orthodoxy that informs this promise and the irreversible one-size-fits-all medical prescription that comes with it, the parent contributors to this anthology share deeply personal stories about transition and desistance that won't be told at the gender clinic. They also offer practical advice based on hard-earned experience that won't be found in mainstream media. Whether progressive or conservative, gay or straight, secular or religious, they all share the aim of protecting children from the physical and emotional harms of the gender industry and seek to empower and encourage other parents and individuals to combat gender ideology at home, in schools, in clinics, and beyond. She has performed her poetry in venues across the United States and Canada, including at Canada's National Arts Centre. These are four writers who actively submit their work, who persist at it and who publish. Among what they have in common is that they each found their “lane” in writing, and that lane gave them the traction to publish in lit mags and succeed by their unique definitions of “success” for their writing. They didn't necessarily start out in their lane, so you'll hear from them about finding that sweet spot, that place where what they are writing and where they are submitting fit.

Don't miss this great conversation! Here is Dr. Wasson's Bio in his own words: My interest in medicine, actually began back in the Bronx during my summer college job as a life guard. At the age of eighteen, I was involved with the resuscitation of an elderly gentleman who suffered a heart attack. The tragedy of his death was an epiphany for me, and I immediately shifted my course load to pre-med at the State University of New York at Buffalo where I had been an engineering major. Four years later, I was admitted to UCLA medical school and traveled west from Buffalo, New York, on a dreary January day, to tour UCLA and its environs. Well, need I say more? I was sold at my first palm tree sighting.  I loved medical school, and was honored by being selected  by the faculty, into Alpha Omega Alpha, the national honor medical society.  As I rotated through the various sub specialties such as surgery, emergency medicine, radiology and pediatrics, I tried to envision myself in each. But it was the children that captured my heart. They were too fun and honest. Yes, they get illnesses, but they overwhelmingly get better, and I enjoyed educating the families and reassuring them along the way. As a rather outgoing, and informal individual, I seemed a natural fit for relating well to the children and adolescents. After medical school, I completed my pediatric residency at Harbor General Hospital, a UCLA affiliated program. From there I took my first job at the East Los Angeles Child and Youth Clinic in Boyle Heights, a Latino community, where I both improved my Spanish language proficiency and found an even deeper love for Los Angeles, until then just a city of sun and palms.  After 3 gratifying years at the clinic I decided to enter private practice on the Westside and ultimately helped form the nucleus of what is now 10th Street Pediatrics. Annually, for the past 20 years, and in concert with All Saints Church, in Beverly Hills, I have lead a team of doctors, nurses and volunteers to remote  areas of Honduras. We convert their churches into medical clinics and care for approximately 1200 patients during our one week mission whom we have come to know so well. This volunteer work over the years has been one of the most moving experiences of my life. I've been blessed with 2 wonderful adult children, Sam, a successful writer and Sophie, a burgeoning psychologist. My wife, Maria, is a Gynecologic Nurse Practitioner in Santa Monica. We live in Venice and share a love of cinema, nature and travel to far away places, when our busy lives allow it.  On my personal time, I love reading, with my favorites being Phillip Roth and William Styron, and  try to carve out an hour for my daily fix of Rachel Maddow. You'll find me either rollerblading or bicycle riding on the bike path in Venice a few times a week and yearly on the slopes of Mammoth, no better than a "solid blue." I'm loyal to my Bronx upbringing, hence my love of the frustrating Knicks, and my boyhood hero, Willie Mays. Rachel shares critical tips on sleep training and getting your baby (and toddler) to sleep. Sleep is essential to a family's well being and happiness - you won't want to miss this conversation. Rachel's bio in her words: My name is Rachel Mitchell and I am the founder of My Sweet Sleeper. I am a certified Pediatric & Maternity Sleep Consultant, former night nanny, and mom of six (soon to be seven). My Sweet Sleeper was born shortly after I had my first child ten years ago when I realized how little information I received about sleep and how valuable this would have been going home with a brand new baby. Even with my experience working with children, I had no idea where to start when it came to getting my baby to sleep, and I felt worried that I would never get a good night's rest again (and I know you probably share these thoughts, too). Since starting My Sweet Sleeper, I have worked with thousands of families all over the world and I have had the rewarding experience of helping their children sleep better. It truly is one of the most wonderful professions, and I genuinely look forward to each new family I get to be a part of. When I'm not saving families from sleep deprivation, you can find me sipping hot coffee (half decaf), running along the beach, working in the yard, and hanging out with my husband and kiddos. We live just outside of Boston and are pretty much a modern day Brady Bunch with six kids between us + one on the way. With the rise of technology, increased screen time, less opportunity to explore the outdoors and now a worldwide pandemic, children are at an increased risk for depression, ADHD and even suicide. Peter also talks about his non profit organization, Let Grow. He is author of an internationally acclaimed introductory psychology textbook (Psychology, Worth Publishers, now in its 8th edition), which views all of psychology from an evolutionary perspective. His recent research focuses on the role of play in human evolution and how children educate themselves through play and exploration, when they are free to do so. He has expanded on these ideas in his book, Free to Learn: Why Unleashing the Instinct to Play Will Make Our Children Happier, More Self-Reliant, and Better Students for Life (Basic Books). He also authors a regular blog called Freedom to Learn, for Psychology Today magazine. In this episode of The Hamilton Review, Dr. Bob has an in depth discussion with Kate Julian, a senior editor at The Atlantic and the author of the magazine's May 2020 cover story, "The Anxious Child and the Crisis of Modern Parenting." If you are a parent, this is an absolute must listen conversation that will help you look at parenting in a whole different way. Kate Julian is a senior editor at The Atlantic and the author of the magazine's May cover story, "The Anxious Child and the Crisis of Modern Parenting." She is currently writing a book for Scribner expanding on the themes of her previous Atlantic cover story, “The Sex Recession,” which was The Atlantic's most-read magazine piece of 2018. She is particularly interested in young people's mental health and in the challenges of coming of age in a world that's much changed from the one in which today's parents grew up. Before joining The Atlantic, Julian was the deputy editor of The Washington Post's Sunday Outlook section and the managing editor of The New Yorker. She lives in the Washington, D.C., area with her husband and two elementary-school aged children.
