Fresh from playing the Paranoia Mandatory Bonus Fun Card Game, Dan and Paul discuss their experience with various editions of the Paranoia RPG. Stay alert, trust no one, and keep your laser handy! Paranoia is a humorous role-playing game set in a dystopian future along the lines of Nineteen Eighty-Four, Brave New World, Logan's Run, and THX 1138; however, the tone of the game is rife with black humor, frequently tongue-in-cheek rather than dark and heavy. Most of the game's humor is derived from the players' (usually futile) attempts to complete their assignment while simultaneously adhering to the Computer's arbitrary, contradictory and often nonsensical security directives. Originally designed and written by Greg Costikyan, Dan Gelber, and Eric Goldberg, and first published in 1984 by West End Games, since 2004 Paranoia has been published under license by Mongoose Publishing. The game won the Origins Award for Best Roleplaying Rules of 1984 and was inducted into the Origins Awards Hall of Fame in 2007. Paranoia is notable among tabletop games for being more competitive than co-operative, with players encouraged to betray one another for their own interests, as well as for keeping a light-hearted, tongue in cheek tone despite its dystopian setting. Paul & Dan reminisce on the Advanced D&D Gold Box computer game, Pool of Radiance. Pool of Radiance was a role-playing video game developed and published by Strategic Simulations, Inc (SSI) in 1988. It was the first adaptation of TSR's Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (AD&D) fantasy role-playing game for home computers, becoming the first episode in a four-part series of D&D computer adventure games. The other games in the "Gold Box" series used the game engine pioneered in Pool of Radiance, as did later D&D titles such as the Neverwinter Nights online game. Pool of Radiance takes place in the Forgotten Realms fantasy setting, with the action centered in and around the port city of Phlan. As in traditional D&D games, the player starts by building a party of up to six characters, deciding the race, gender, class, and ability scores for each. The player's party is enlisted to help the settled part of the city by clearing out the marauding inhabitants that have taken over the surroundings. The characters move on from one area to another, battling bands of enemies as they go and ultimately confronting the powerful leader of the evil forces. During play, the player characters gain experience points, which allow them to increase their capabilities. The game primarily uses a first-person perspective, with the screen divided into sections to display pertinent textual information. During combat sequences, the display switches to a top-down "video game isometric" view. Generally well received by the gaming press, Pool of Radiance won the Origins Award for "Best Fantasy or Science Fiction Computer Game of 1988". Some reviewers criticized the game's similarities to other contemporary games and its slowness in places, but praised the game's graphics and its role-playing adventure and combat aspects. Also well-regarded was the ability to export player characters from Pool of Radiance to subsequent SSI games in the series. Wandering DMs Paul Siegel and Dan “Delta” Collins host thoughtful discussions on D&D and other TTRPGs every week. Comparing the pros and cons of every edition from the 1974 Original D&D little brown books to cutting-edge releases for 5E D&D today, we broadcast live on YouTube and Twitch so we can take viewer questions and comments on the topic of the day. James Ernest began his gaming career in 1993 as a technical writer for Wizards of the Coast. He has written the rules for Magic: The Gathering a grand total of four times. Unfortunately, none of these was the lucrative first time. Burdened with an abundance of unpublished games and alarmed by first-hand exposure to the tribulations of traditional game publishing, he launched Cheapass Games in 1996 with the flagship title Kill Doctor Lucky. The slow start of Cheapass Games in 1996 is marked by the fact that Kill Doctor Lucky won the Origins Award for Best Abstract Board game of the following year. For ten years, Cheapass Games released about twelve games per year, winning several awards and bringing light and joy to the hearts of dozens of humans. However, James Ernest was not able to pay his rent with light and joy. Thus, with a heavy heart and an empty bank account, James Ernest shuttered Cheapass Games, fired all of his staff, and retired into a dark cave called the computer games industry, in which he was forced to subsist on a massive paycheck and decent benefits. After more than five years in his cave, James Ernest has re-emerged Willy Wonka-style, producing new versions of his old games as well as some entirely new creations. http://cheapass.com/ https://www.facebook.com/ActualCheapassGames https://www.instagram.com/cheapassgames/ https://twitter.com/CheapassGames https://twitter.com/cheapassjames Theme music created by Brett Miller http://www.brettmillermusic.net/

Important note: It seems conventional on other podcasts I listen, to mention explicit language - in case your kids are around while you listen or something. There are a few F-words in this episode. I apologise I forgot to mention it in the intro to the episode. This week on the podcast we geek out about tabletop roleplaying games (and a bunch of other stuff - don't feel left out if you don't play tabletop roleplaying games) with an awesome guest: Luke Crane. Luke had won multiple Origins Awards for Best Roleplaying Games in 2006 for his first system Burning Wheel and again in 2008 for MouseGuard. He also designed several other games such as Burning Empires, FreeMarket (with Jared Sorensen) and recently Torchbearer. Luke regularly talks about game design as a variety of events and conventions. Last but certainly not least, Luke is also the Head of Games for Kickstarter, the online crowdfunding website. He gets to support thriving game designers bring their projects to life thanks to the support of fans on the popular crowdfunding platform. We had a fantastic conversation about the design voices in Luke's head, his lunar origins, authors intentions in game design, his latin studies, the Burning Wheel RPG system, his favourite games and movies, how games and tabletop games in particular are seeing a renaissance thanks to crowdfunding and more. Enjoy! Origins 2007 Round Table with Chris Hanrahan, Fred Hicks, and Kenneth Hite 0:38 - Before talking about Origins, I briefly discuss the ENnies. This show, along with The Sons of Kryos, The Godzilla Gaming Podcast, Yog Radio, and Fear the Boot, has been nominated for Best Podcast. 4:01 - The Sons of Kryos say hi. 4:14 - Chris Hanrahan (of 2d6 Feet In a Random Direction) and I corner Fred Hicks and Kenneth Hite to talk about our time at Origins, starting with our great dinner at the Burgundy Room. 7:25 - With that out of the way, Fred gives us the scoop on the Indie Press Revolution booth, while I talk about the joy of giving Luke Crane his Origins Award for Burning Empires. This led to a discussion of this year's voting procedure for the Origins Award and how important activism was. 12:08 - Ken talks about carry, Aces and Eights, and Witch Hunter. 23:23 - Prompted by Ken, Fred discusses his time at the IPR booth, focusing on Spirit of the Century and Don't Rest You Head. I mention Battlestations in passing, and Ken demands that I put a link to it in the show notes. 25:21 - We get Chris to talk about his love for new Battletech products. Drool is involved. 28:20 - Jerry Corrick of Adventure Retail and the Source gets serious kudos from Ken for his impressive stock of Cthulhiana and Lovecraft books (including The Kalem Klub and The Monster in the Mirror). 32:48 - I talk about playing board games, especially in the Board Room run by the Columbus Area Boardgaming Society. Among them were Zooloretto, Pizza Box Baseball, Lost Valley, and Jenseits von Theben. 37:46 - After a brief digression about the glories of the North Market, Fred talks about playing a few after-hours RPGs with Jared Sorensen, and we talk about what makes Origins a great experience (as Ken and I discussed last year). 42:14 - Chris and I got to shoot things in TerrorWerks. Ken manages to relate this to the Scandinavian gaming scene and how our hobby is able to adapt and sell a highly-individualized experience. (This is why we invite him on the show.) Fred brings in the Ashcan Front as an example. Eventually this comes around to a discussion of the Origins seminar track. 52:48 - Before we go, Chris gives a shout out to the city of Columbus, and we all agree. 57:28 - This show is part of the Gaming Broadcast Network. 57:34 - I have a few final thoughts on Origins before talking about two projects I've worked on recently, Finis and The Story Games Names Project. --Paul Discuss this episode in the HG,WT forum.

The Basement Tapes Interview with Kenneth Hite at Origins 2006 0:40 - I introduce the show and explain why this episode is so long. 2:08 - Ken tries to convince me to confuse my audience with my new numbering scheme. 4:26 - I tell Ken the recorder is already on, so we start talking about Origins (sort of). 6:44 - Having now discussed my anniversary, we explain why we do these sorts of interviews. 7:12 - Ken and I disagree (initially) about the nature of Origins vs. other conventions. 9:00 - I tell a long and involved story about my first trip Origins. 13:52 - Ken agrees with me that one of the unique features of Origins is the degree to which fans and professionals have the opportunity to interact with each other. We talk about why that's a good thing for both sides. 17:39 - Origins has many panels. Ken was on a lot of them, and I was on one too. In this context, we discuss the Secret Origin of Have Games, Will Travel. 21:10 - I give Ken an awful segue to talk about his Origins Award for GURPS Infinite Worlds. 23:28 - Still on the subject of the Origins Awards, we express our pleasure at Artesia's win in the RPG category. 25:35 - Finally, we get around to talking about the new stuff we saw at the show. The short answer: Not much. 28:18 - Road to Berlin from Avalanche Press gets Ken nostalgic about his wargaming roots. 30:37 - We bemoan the fact that neither Ken nor I could buy Twilight Struggle from GMT Games at the show. 35:30 - Our look at micropress RPGs reveals an interest in It Was A Mutual Decision, Timestream, and Mortal Coil, all of which were found at the Indie Press Revolution booth. 36:40 - Ken's joy at finding half-price Osprey books and leads to a discussion of what the gaming industry can learn from them. 43:23 - We veer into our ongoing discussion on how the gaming industry is moving toward a "convention culture." In this context, Ken modestly pimps his convention exclusive Dubious Shards. 51:28 - Ken and I argue one last time about what to call this episode before bringing the interview to a close. 52:21 - Don't forget, this show is part of the Gaming Podcast Network. 52:30 - I wrap things up and hope to see you again soon on episode #68. --Paul Discuss this episode in the HG,WT forum
