MY HEART TOOK A LEAP - THE POETIC INNOCENCE OF THE SHANGRI-LAS" -RICH BUCKLAND'S EPIPHANY NOTEBOOKLike so many pre teens growing up in the sixites I slept with a transistor radio under my pillow. That receiver was the best friend a 12 year old could possibly have. It told me only what I wanted to hear and unlike the parental tunes regulary dispensed, I could slide the dial to another frequency and change the feel and tempo. 1964 was an extraordinary year for popular music and youthful urges. My wireless companion delivered the sound of pleading voices reciting urgent love calls through the night air. The first feminine intonations that whispered directly to my adolescent hunger ariived through The Supremes in June of that year. I would wait anxiously through the bedtime darkness to hear the DJ conduct another spin of the salvation revealed within a Diana Ross plea requesting an explanation to what would become the eternal question of "Where Did Our Love Go". I was fully captured by the gentle elocution each conflicted tone incited. She was conducting a sorrowful inquest, the meaning of which I was not experienced enough to comprehend and yet fully accepted. It felt like a sensual revolution emanating from the magic of a wireless, spiritual trasmission, but more importantly a glorious awakening having nothing to do with sexual messaging. It was my initiation into the significance of lonliness. And then it became more complex. In August of that same period, a group calling themselves The Shangri-las, dispatched a 45 revelations per second record titled "Remember (Walking In The Sand )" It ignited something dark and dramatic. This was my first migraine heartache and I understood the origin. It was the voice of Mary Weiss, the groups teen vocalist from Queens NY, the very borough I lived in. She was singing a story of such anguish, I just wanted to embrace her and make it better. "Oh, no, Oh no, Oh, no, no, no, no, no. Remember (Walking In The Sand)". The song and it's production were the child of a music business misfit named George "Shadow" Morton" But it was the urgent hurt of Mary Weiss that has lived within me going on 55 years. I recall ruminating, " If this is 12, what the hell will 13 be like." I began to find out when the next Shangri-las recording was released in December. The melancholy of "Remember" surrendered to another George Morton composition sung as only Mary and her partners could. It was called "Give Him A Great Big Kiss" and made me feel better about our fate and the abyss she had us both falling into only four months earlier. Teendom was just around my Queens, NY street corner. Hope and the sound of rock and roll transmitted by Murray The K, wrestled with the gusty winds which flowed beneath the Throgs Neck Bridge where my friends and I spent long summer days.In retrospect Mary Weiss was my first true infatuation. The emotions were real, especially for a kid who cried over Jackie Wilsons "Lonely Teardrops" at age 7. Rock and Rhythm and Blues produced awakenings and sensations with no age restrictions.After 4 marriages I still have similar questions posed by The Shangri-las and The Supremes . I owe a great debt to those remarkable women and their sacred voices. If we are fortunate, the eternal flame of yearning begs new understanding with each sunrise. Just give the one you love a Great Big Kiss and always Remember. Always.
Dion Agius burst on to surfing's global stage with a spectacular Gorkin Flip in the 2009 surf flick Secret Machine. He fell in with filmmakers Joe G, Taylor Steele, and Kai Neville, appearing in a slew of films, among them Castles in the Sky, Stranger Than Fiction, Modern Collective, Lost Atlas, Dear Suburbia, Cluster, Year Zero, and Strange Rumblings in Shangri-La. Agius' parts punch—he surfs with a powderkeg intensity. Every hack, every blowtail, every fanging air is done as if his life depends upon it. A man of style in and out of the water, Dion co-founded Epokhe Eyewear, The Octopus is Real, Standard Procedure. He's the creative director at Ritual Vision. He's collaborated on shoe and clothing collections with Globe and Former, and surfboard models with Hayden Cox. In 2024, while nursing a broken leg, he created NOID, an art project in which he upcycles old, broken surfboards into sculptures, side tables, lamps, mirrors, and more. Interview with Bob Bert drummer from Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore, and Lydia Lunch! After seeing the Beatles on The Ed Sullivan show as an eight-year-old, he took drum lessons for one year at age twelve and learned enough to bang along to the Rolling Stones and garage-punk nuggets of the 60's (Cue up the Barbarians' "Are You A Boy Or Are You A Girl"). Bob became desperate to get out of the hell of his Catholic grade school. “In my town, which was 11 miles outside New York City, we had two types of kids, the rah rahs (jocks) and the hoods (greasers). The hoods were mainly in the public school, and I gravitated towards the hoods mainly for the style; black leather jackets and girls that looked like the Shangri-Las and the Ronettes. I told my mom I would drop out if she didn't take me out of Catholic School!” One day Bob got called out of class by the principal who slapped his face back and forth saying "why would you ever want to go to public school?!”. (cue up "Mississippi Queen,” Quaalude Interlude", and "Oink Oink"). In high school Bob drifted away from drumming and headed towards Pop Art, Andy Warhol being a big influence. He got into Glam Rock hitting the NYC clubs to see the New York Dolls, Harlots of 42nd Street, Wayne County and the Backstreet Boys etc. He discovered CBGBs in 1975, when he wandered into a Television / Patti Smith double bill. He took classes at SVA and learned how to silk screen. He moved into Manhattan in 1978 and became a fine art silkscreen printer, eventually working for Warhol up until his death. (Cue up the Velvet Underground's " Foggy Notion" and the Modern Lovers' "Pablo Picasso"). In 1979, Bert saw an ad in the Village Voice soliciting “Punk Rock art,” submitted a piece which was accepted for a group show at the Nonson Gallery on Wooster Street, much to his delight. The opening was a gas, the whole downtown scene was in full effect. Joey Ramone's piece was a toothbrush with red paint on it glued to the ceiling entitled "Bloody Gums.” Daniel Rey's Shrapnel performed in the back and someone drove a motorcycle through the front door! It was at Nonson that Bob met artist Linda Wolfe. In 1981, Bob and Linda moved to Hoboken, living a block away from the famed club, Maxwell's where Bob would spend half of his life seeing great shows and making tons of friends. In 1981 while hanging at a different club, he got up on stage making a racket with Peter Missing and Jeff Holiday (RIP). “We became the band Drunk Driving causing trouble most of the time we played. We were banned from Maxwells after Peter put his upside-down martini glass graffitti, which he became well known for when he formed his next band Missing Foundation, on the newly painted wall.” After about seven months, Bert saw a flier that Sonic Youth needed a drummer. Bob took the flyer which he still has and joined in 1982. As it turns out he was the only one to call. After his tenure with them, he joined Pussy Galore, staying with them from the mid-80's through the end of the decade. Bob's new album bob-bert

Stephen Dziedzic of the ABC joins Darren to catch up on something besides Iran and the (still-closed) Strait of Hormuz. The conversation begins with the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, where Stephen was on the ground. They discuss the mood in the room, the relative absence of Iran from the public discussion despite its obvious relevance to maritime security, and the broader regional anxiety about escalation, sea lanes, chokepoints, ports, subsea cables and the physical infrastructure that underpins the Indo-Pacific order. They also examine Vietnamese President Tô Lâm's keynote speech, Pete Hegseth's address on US engagement in Asia, and the significance of China again not sending its defence minister. The conversation then turns to DPM Richard Marles' Shangri-La speech and its focus on subsea cables and maritime infrastructure. Darren sees a reframing of the “rules-based order” towards a physical system that must be monitored, protected and defended. They also discuss the AUKUS announcements made in Singapore, including the Pillar II underwater drone project and the shift in Australia's planned Virginia-class submarine acquisition from a mix of new and used boats to three in-service submarines. Cộng đồng quốc tế muốn lắng nghe quan điểm của Việt Nam về những vấn đề toàn cầu như an ninh - địa chính trị, kinh tế - địa kinh tế, và công nghệ - địa công nghệ.”Đánh giá về dấu mốc này, chuyên gia Thái Lan cho rằng có ba điểm nổi bật: Việt Nam đã trở nên tự tin và trưởng thành, sẵn sàng bước ra sân khấu lớn; Shangri-La là nền tảng phù hợp để Việt Nam thể hiện vai trò; và thực tiễn phát triển kinh tế ấn tượng là minh chứng cho năng lực mà Việt Nam có thể chia sẻ với khu vực. They had a sound somewhere between The Go-Go's and The Ramones, with bubblegum teenage libido maxed out with a dose of The Shangri La's. Led by a “new wave Betty Boop,” to quote one review, this group offered great sounds and sex appeal. Combining those undeniable elements of energy and enthusiasm. The group disbanded in 1981, though Nikki returned in the 21st century as Nikki Corvette & The Stingrays – a band incorporating Travis Ramin on guitar, Georgia Peach on bass and Johnny O'Halloran on drums.
