Toward the end of our conversation with Matt Fraction, he mentions how his upcoming Batman book with Jorge Jiménez represents where his Hawkeye series would have gone if he and David Aja had continued. What does that mean, exactly? It's complicated, and you'll just have to listen to this week's podcast to fully understand. And that's what we call in the biz, a big ol' tease. Our chat with Matt Fraction concludes our San Diego Comic-Con International coverage, and we're so frickin' excited that we get to do so with this writer and this creation. As longtime listeners know, Batman is one of our boys, and the character has never been in as many good hands as he is right now at DC. Beyond this new Batman relaunch with Fraction and Jiménez, we have stellar titles in Absolute Batman, Batman and Robin, Batman and Robin: Year One, Batman: Dark Patterns, and probably a half dozen books we're forgetting about at this moment. Batman, created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, first appeared in Detective Comics #27, published on March 30th, 1939. The character's longevity makes him indestructible. He won't break, no matter what Matt Fraction and Jorge Jiménez do to him. This comes with tremendous freedom, allowing Fraction and Jiménez to throw everything of themselves into the character, and their longevity on the line will ultimately be determined by us, the readers. Having read the first two issues in the new series, we can happily report that Matt Fraction and Jorge Jiménez's take on the character is very much our jam, and rather unique from the other excellent flavors you can find on the stand every month. Their Batman operates in a semi-one-and-done structure, embracing the medium of comics while still satisfying those who crave long-haul storytelling. Mostly, it's a fun as hell ride that looks slick. These are superhero comics that are not afraid to be superhero comics. They're damn proud of it, in fact. However, before we dive into all the Batman talk with Matt Fraction, we must regale you with our recent comic shop road trip to Richmond and Virginia Beach, Virginia. We did it, gang. We've already completed our mission to visit fifty comic book shops in fifty-two weeks. We've learned a lot from this experiment, and we need to discuss both the wonderful and not-so-wonderful aspects we've observed in these stores. Strap in for some serious retail talk. Batman #1 is written by Matt Fraction, illustrated by Jorge Jiménez, colored by Tomeu Morey, lettered by Clayton Cowles, and published by DC. The first issue arrives in comic book shops on September 3rd. They're constantly snagging rockstar creators like James Stokoe, Tom Scioli, Andrew MacLean, Louie Joyce, Jake Smith, Eric Powell, Rosie Knight, and Oliver Ono to unleash their talents on cinema's most significant kaiju universe. And this July, IDW is taking their Godzilla books to the next level by introducing the Kei-Sei era. This new shared universe line begins with Godzilla #1 by Tim Seeley and Nikola Čižmešija. There's a new Godzilla design, a mess load of Kaiju antagonists…and protagonists - plus, superpowered human characters. Thanks to IDW Publishing, it's a good time to be a fan of the Big G and quality comics. SUMMER CROSSOVER SPECTACULAR CONTINUES! We've discussed tie-ins to DC's 1994 continuity-altering crossover Zero Hour on a couple occasions so far, but now we finally tackle the main series itself. Billed as “The Beginning of Tomorrow!” and a fresh entry point for new and lapsed readers alike, writer-artist Dan Jurgens pits DC's heroes against Extant and Parallax for the fate of the universe…and the good guys don't quite stop them in time! The result is a new timeline (reflected in a literal printed timeline of events included in the last issue), a hard reboot for the Legion of Super-Heroes (the first of many, unfortunately), and some questionable changes to Batman's history (which have since been overturned). We also do a real nerdy deep-dive on DC continuity and the lingering effects of 1986's Crisis on Infinite Earths, and Justin finally lets Jim explain what the deal with Monarch was.Discussed in this episode: Zero Hour: Crisis in Time #0-4 (well, actually #4-0…)Bonus episodes and a newsletter at patreon.com/ironageofcomics
Every superhero has an arch-nemesis (or two). Batman's got the Joker. Spidey's got the Green Goblin. Superman? Lex Luthor. But you? You've got five freelancing villains quietly sabotaging your business. There's no maniacal laughter or evil stare. They're not wearing capes or threatening to destroy the world with a giant-ass laser. These villains are more subtle: “Just one more YouTube video…” “I'll do those reachouts tomorrow…” “I need to fix my portfolio first…” And before you know it? They've stolen another week of progress. If there's one thing I've learned working 1 on 1 with hundreds of creative freelancers, it's this: You don't rise to the level of your strategy…You fall to the level of your patterns. I've seen clients with a flawless strategy that they're trying to execute… And yet they can't get out of their own damn way to execute it. Because when things get hard, or new, or uncomfortable… We default down to whatever survival pattern we've always used to cope. In this week's episode, I'm joined by one of the Clients by Design coaches, Josh Love, to call out all 5 of those freelancing villains (and how to finally defeat them). We'll dive into: how these patterns form how they masquerade as productivity what to do when you catch yourself spiraling. The first step to defeating your particular villain is knowing which one you're dealing with. For full show notes, visit https://6figurecreative.com/376

Holy rain and lightning, Batman! Really came down earlier this morning with some significant lightning as well. Gonna be really nice the rest of the week with high temps hovering around 80° for the next few days. In the news this morning, the latest on the Holmen robbery suspect, the search for a wanted MN man in Vernon County continues, a rare sub-tropical wood stork was spotted in Wisconsin over the weekend, the most recent updates on Hurricane Erin, and Terence Stamp died over the weekend at age 87. In sports, the Brewers 14-game winning streak was finally snapped yesterday by the Reds, Craig Counsell got caught in a lie about George Webb burgers, the Packers beat the Colts on Saturday, and the Bucks signed Amir Coffey. Elsewhere in sports, results from this weekend's NASCAR race, the punishment handed down to Michigan for the sign-stealing scandal, and a former Badgers basketball coach is being sued by several of her former players. Cool story about a bunch of grandkids who surprised their grandmother with a trip to Hawaii, and a guy who found a lost wallet in a car that he was working on. We let you know what's on the boob-tube today/tonight, and we also talked about a possible lawsuit over window seats on airplanes. Plus, the states that scroll the most on their phones, a subscription service from Volkswagen, and the possibility of Taylor Swift performing during the Super Bowl halftime show. And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a teacher who got a DUI on the second day of school, a hiker who got trapped behind a waterfall for two days, a man in Connecticut who got stuck in a slide on a playground, a #FloridaMan dressed as a jester who threatened another guy with a dagger because he was too loud while mowing his lawn, a guy who was on the "I Am A Stalker" show on Netflix got busted for stalking, and a MN woman who thought her neighbor was "murdering & raping" people...so she shot her.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week on Toon'd In!, Jim Cummings welcomes the legendary animator, writer, director, and Darkwing Dad himself—Tad Stones! The creative force behind Darkwing Duck, Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, and the Aladdin sequels and series sits down for a no-holds-barred chat packed with passion, nostalgia, and a few myth-busting surprises (yes, we're talking about Darkwing and Batman... again). From his early days at Disney during the Eisner boom to crafting some of the most beloved Saturday morning staples of all time, Tad shares what it really took to bring these shows to life—story pitches, character development, late-night rewrites, and the moments that made it all worthwhile. He and Jim reflect on their collaborations, the evolution of TV animation, and why the heart behind the art still matters most.
Read transcriptHoly cowl-wearing console catastrophe, comic crusaders! This week on Play Comics we're grappling-hooking our way into the surprisingly deep shadows of 2005's Batman Begins video game – because apparently someone at Eurocom looked at Christopher Nolan's gritty reboot and thought, “You know what this needs? A fear meter and the ability to summon actual bats to terrify thugs into submission!” Released across more platforms than Batman has traumatic childhood memories, this movie tie-in somehow managed to land on PS2, Xbox, GameCube, and Game Boy Advance without completely embarrassing itself in the process. While most movie games crash and burn faster than if I tried to drive the Batmobile, this stealth-action adventure actually tried to do something interesting with its “High Frequency Transponder” gadget and environmental intimidation mechanics that made enemies drop their weapons in sheer terror. Joining us for this digital descent into Gotham's criminal underworld is the incredibly talented Wells Thompson, creative mastermind behind indie comic sensations and the brilliant mind that helped bring us The Scorpion and the Queen (among a bunch of other Kickstarter projects) and the force over at WellsThompson.com. Wells brings his unique perspective on comic storytelling and adaptations to help us figure out whether this game captured the essence of both the Dark Knight's origin story and Nolan's cinematic vision, or if it belongs in Arkham Asylum alongside the rest of the movie tie-in disasters. From the surprisingly robust stealth segments that actually rewarded patience over button-mashing, to those Batmobile sequences that had us questioning our life choices, we'll explore how this Eurocom-developed title managed to be the last Batman movie to get a proper video game adaptation – and whether that's a good thing or a tragedy. So grab your utility belt and join us as we investigate whether fear really is the best weapon, or if this game should have stayed in the cave where it belongs! Learn such things as: Where does this game fit into the timeline of the movie? Is it a problem that I could just buy the driving parts by themselves? How many times can you do the same puzzle? And so much more! You can find Wells on BlueSky @wellsthomp, his newsletter Comics, Cats, and Cocktails, his current Kickstarter The Scorpion and the Queen or just go ahead and see all of his stuff on Kickstarter, and of course his website WellsThompson.com.
