In this dark and thrilling episode, I sit down with comics legends Matt Wagner and Kelley Jones to talk about their gothic team-up on a new Dracula graphic novel series — a fresh, nightmarish take on the Lord of the Undead that blends Hammer horror, classic literature, and modern comics craft. We also dive deep into their iconic Batman work. Matt Wagner reflects on his acclaimed retellings of the Dark Knight's formative years in Batman and the Monster Men and Batman and the Mad Monk, grounded updates of the original Detective Comics stories that shaped Gotham's early shadows. Meanwhile, Kelley Jones revisits his unforgettable Batman: Red Rain, a horror-infused Elseworlds classic that reimagines Batman as a literal creature of the night — a vampire battling Dracula himself. Plus: Kelley's eerie, emotional Deadman mini-series, their shared love of horror as mythmaking, and what it means to push iconic characters into darker, more psychological terrain. A must-listen for fans of Batman, monsters, and the art of gothic reinvention.

In our latest DC spolight, Jace and Rocky run through a busy October 1 slate while previewing NYCC plans for panel live-tweets and interviews if Jace can make it to the show plus industry buzz from Vertigo and big Marvel/DC crossover whispers. The kick things off by breaking down the current Batman era's tone and art, while debating Gotham's law-and-order vibe as it compares to real-world events currently. Gotham Academy: First Year is Jace's first exposure to the property and Ricky get a “Wednesday-esque” feel from it, the Justice League: Omega Act Special is a perfect jumping on point into the next big event, DC K.O. and sums up everything happpening in DC over that last year. Poison Ivy's run earns kudos for layered, flawed character work. Cassandra Cain's globe-trotting martial-arts arc sparks a deep dive on DC's fight-lore and works for Rocky while Jace is still underwhelmed, while Absolute Green Lantern's dense worldbuilding is best enjoyed as fresh space opera rather than familiar Lantern canon. A slick heist setup in Cheetah & Cheshire Rob the Justice League shines for character moments, while Absolute Superman spotlights Kal's evolving bond with Sol, his AI guardian and and also Kal's Smallville ties, Adventures of Superman: Book of El builds future-era intrigue, the Zatanna Panic Halloween anthology offers bite-size spooky detours to celebrate Halloween, and JSA reaches a long-awaited finale. As always Jace gives a rundown of collected editions out this week also and the guys wrap things up with their weekly rankings of all the DC titles they've read.

The underworld is crowded with thieves, but Parker has always stood apart. Created by Donald Westlake in the early 1960s, the character has been portrayed on screen by actors including Lee Marvin, Mel Gibson, and Jason Statham. He's a blunt-force professional who isn't Bond, isn't Batman, but something rougher, hungrier, and coded by his own ruthless blue-collar sense of order. With "Play Dirty," filmmaker Shane Black takes his own crack at Parker, bringing the character to Prime Video on October 1 and casting Mark Wahlberg in the role. The film follows Parker, a ruthless thief, and his expert crew who stumble onto the heist of a lifetime that pits them against the New York mob. The film also stars LaKeith Stanfield, Rosa Salazar, Keegan-Michael Key, Nat Wolff, and more. This version doesn't come with gadgets or acrobatics. Black describes a Parker who thinks fast, hits harder, and feels closer to the blue-collar world than to the spy fantasy. It's the kind of material that lets him indulge his taste for pulp grit, sly humor, and the holiday backdrop he's made famous. But it also opens the door to some bigger questions: what draws audiences to men this uncompromising? How do you make crime fun without sanding off the edges? And what happens when you cast Wahlberg instead of Robert Downey Jr.?READ MORE: ‘All Of You': Brett Goldstein On Love, The Science of Soulmates, ‘Shrinking' Surprises, & ‘Ted Lasso' [The Discourse Podcast]Writer/Director Shane Black joins The Discourse to talk about the journey of bringing his Parker film to the screen, which started all the way back during the making of Black's first film, “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” in 2005. When asked what itch hadn't been scratched by earlier adaptations, Black pointed to Parker's uniqueness. “Each one represents the era in which it was produced. 'Point Blank' with Lee Marvin is a very specific film for that time period. And each actor who's played Parker from there on, like Robert Duvall, Jason Statham, and Mel Gibson in "Payback." There has been a history of incarnations of this powerful, relentless character. But he's not James Bond, which is why I liked him. He's sort of blue collar. It's almost like an American entrepreneur's story. But he happens to be a really awful, bad person and a criminal anti-hero.”

On today's episode of The Kristian Harloff Show, we break down why Superman draws huge HBO Max numbers and what this means for the future of DC on streaming. But that's just the start. James Gunn is teasing the DCU in a major way, revealing that big actors are circling the role of Batman, plus clearing up whether The Suicide Squad is canon. Meanwhile, Marvel just shocked fans by pulling its mystery 2027 summer movie from the schedule – and replacing it with The Simpsons Movie 2! We'll also cover quick news on Batman, Rings, Gore, Mid, Ray, and 13th, plus the MASSIVE story that EA has officially been acquired for $55 billion. This episode is packed with DCU updates, Marvel surprises, and huge entertainment news that you don't want to miss.
On this episode of Word Balloon, I sit down with writer Chip Zdarsky to dig into his bold, current run on Captain America. Chip explains his vision for the Star-Spangled Avenger, including the introduction of a new Cap born in the wake of 9/11, during the years when Steve Rogers was still frozen in ice. We also dive into his celebrated DC work on Batman, where he created the relentless Failsafe, repositioned Vandal Savage as a core Gotham villain, and shook up the city's status quo with a brand-new police commissioner. But that's just the start—Chip and I explore his Marvel catalog as well, from the gritty, character-driven drama of Daredevil to the cosmic and family-centered Marvel Two-In-One with the Thing and the Human Torch. And of course, we talk about his creator-owned stories, where he continues to push boundaries and surprise readers with inventive, personal storytelling.
What kind of women characters do we find in Batman stories? How do they interact with Batman, The BatFamily, and the world of Gotham? Dalin Rowell, host & creator of "It's Reely a Podcast," joins me to discuss this year's Batman episode, where we focus on Characters such as Catwoman, Batgirl, Talia al Ghul, Baby Doll, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, and more! Including the under-discussed Andrea Beaumont! Chase Elliott pulled a full Batman, storming from 10th to win in a green-white-checkered stunner, while Denny Hamlin and Bubba Wallace reenacted a dysfunctional family barbecue... complete with door-slamming, finger-flipping, and spilled milk.We break down whether Hamlin should've played team owner or lone wolf, why Bubba's “crowd-the-boss” strategy opened the door for Elliott's miracle win, and how Toyota managed to turn strength in numbers into a demolition derby.Plus: Zane Smith turned his car into a Matchbox stunt toy, SVG fought through penalties and bad luck to sneak into the top 10, and the gang drops their always-unfiltered race ratings (spoiler: even Willie got soft and went full 90%). If you like your race recaps with ribeye jokes, Batman analogies, and just the right amount of trash talk, this episode's your happy place

This episode dives deep into the legend of the Murder City Devil by comic creator Evan Quiring. We explore the city's eerie and supernatural backdrop for the comic, including some of our weird experiences: secret tunnels, ghost stories, hidden love letters in old walls, and the King's Head in the Exchange District. We break down some of the inspirations within the comic, based on old lore and stories from yesteryear. We also dive into comic culture itself — discussing timelines, character progression, and continuity wars: DC Comics vs Marvel Comics, the “Brand New Day” era, Captain Jean DeWolf, and remembering when Marvel “cinema” was “crap” in the '70s and '80s versus today. We talk Gregory Chomichuk, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby (as the Lennon & McCartney of comics), Bill Finger finally getting credit for Batman, and how creators are like bands.
