Click here to try it out!Welcome back to Bad Dads Film Review! This week, we're descending into the mind-bending, minimalist sci-fi thriller that is Cube (1997). A cult favourite from Canadian director Vincenzo Natali, this low-budget psychological puzzle box is as disorienting and claustrophobic as it is thought-provoking.Cube begins in medias res: a group of strangers wakes up in a strange, sterile room with hatches on all six sides. Each door leads to another nearly identical room—some are safe, others are lethal traps. No one knows how or why they're there. The group includes a cop, a doctor, an escape artist, a math whiz, a paranoid conspiracy theorist, and an autistic man with extraordinary numerical abilities. What unfolds is part escape room, part social experiment, as they try to survive—and escape—the Cube.Cube is rich in metaphor and minimal in exposition. It avoids explaining who built the structure or why, focusing instead on how ordinary people behave under extreme pressure. As the group's dynamic shifts, alliances form and collapse, revealing how quickly fear and distrust take hold. The traps are inventive (acid spray, wire slicing, sound-activated death rooms), but the real tension comes from the breakdown of civility and the slow unravelling of each character's psyche. The cube itself becomes a symbol of bureaucracy, control, and the meaningless complexity of modern systems. And the maths—there's a lot of maths. Prime numbers, Cartesian coordinates, permutations. It's as if Saw, Waiting for Godot, and a high school algebra textbook all collided.

Bible Reading: Revelation 7:9-12I can't even understand what they're saying," Ezra said as he and his family entered the church building. His family's car had broken down just over the Canadian border, so they now had to go to church at a place in Quebec, Canada, that his dad had heard about. Everything about the church seemed different to Ezra--the language most of all. When everyone started singing hymns, Ezra's dad passed him a book that said Cantiques on the front. "It's a hymnbook," Dad said. He flipped to the correct page and pointed to a line of words in the song. Ezra tried to follow along with the French song, but none of the words made any sense to him.Later, after church was over, Ezra noticed someone waving to him as he and his family left. He waved back, and his dad asked, "Who's that?""Oh, that's Jacque," Ezra explained. "I met him in Sunday school. He helped me understand the French on the papers the teacher handed out whenever there wasn't English underneath it.""I see," his dad said. "I suppose it was a bit confusing for you in the church service and in Sunday school.""You can say that again," Ezra replied."Going to church in a different country is an interesting experience, isn't it?" said Dad. "Though it can be confusing when things are different from what we're used to or we don't understand what's being said, it's good for us to worship God with Christians from other places in the world. We're all part of God's church and are brothers and sisters in Christ, who saved us by dying for our sins. We worship God in the same way, just in different places and languages." Dad smiled. "In fact, the apostle John wrote in the book of Revelation that there will one day be countless people of every nation, tribe, and language worshiping Jesus in heaven.""Including people from Quebec who speak French?" Ezra asked."That's right." Dad turned to see Jacque and his family leaving. "By the way, au revoir means 'goodbye' in French.""Au revoir, Jacque!" Ezra called."Au revoir, Ezra!" Jacque called back. "I hope to see you again!" –Ethan TerryHow About You?Have you ever attended a church in a different country or where a different language was spoken? Church is not simply a building--God's church is made up of everyone who trusts in Jesus, and He saves people from all over the world. Though we worship Jesus in different places and languages, we are all part of God's family, and one day we will worship Him together in heaven.Today's Key Verse:I saw a vast crowd, too great to count, from every nation and tribe and people and language, standing in front of the throne and before the Lamb. (NLT) (Revelation 7:9)Today's Key Thought:Christians live around the world

Yeah, we'll make the same disclaimer we made the last time we talked about shoegaze. We know the term is polarizing. We realize that it was coined by the press as a term of derision for what had previously been known as "the scene that celebrates itself." Legend has it that writer Andy Ross first used it in a Sounds review to describe how Moose singer/guitarist Russell Yates was constantly looking down at the lyrics he had taped to the floor and/or his guitar pedals. But, face it, you hear the term and you know exactly what it is...ethereal vocals, woozy melodies, ear-piercingly loud, effects-laden guitars, all awash in a psychedelic haze. Nowadays, the bands that play this kind of music wear the "shoegaze" badge with pride. But the O.G.s had to walk so you could run, kids. Hence, this week we are celebrating some of the great shoegaze albums of the 1990s. Joining us is the singer/songwriter/guitarist of '90s Vancouver cult shoegazers Movieland, Alan D. Boyd. Movieland has been honored with the first installment of an archival series from 604 Decades that takes a look back at Vancouver's rich, if unexplored arts history. This rarities and demos collection, Then & Now, proves that they should have been at the top of the marquee during their time. https://movieland1990.bandcamp.com/album/then-now After Movieland disbanded in 1994, Alan moved to the UK, and has enjoyed a long career as an acclaimed composer for TV ("Day of the Triffids") and film ("Four Strings Good"), as well performing in the folk trio Little Sparta (also featuring Susie Honeyman from the Mekons). As you would expect during an episode on shoegaze, we divert our attention to Canadian pop stars, the other Movielands, and have a rare (maybe the first time?) double Triple Crossover! The full version of today's Friday Focus is available to all members. Rudyard and Janice begin today's special Friday Focus episode with the Trump initiated ceasefire that allows both Israel and Iran to claim some measure of victory. But does Trump have the power to make the truce hold? Bibi is learning that American help comes with a price, and the Israeli PM is no longer in the driver's seat. Pulling back to look at the bigger picture, Rudyard and Janice explain how America's involvement in this war is a game changer that has reinforced American power in the Middle East and beyond. Has this past week's events - including the notable absence of China and Russia in this conflict - challenged the idea that we are moving into a multipolar world? Have we underestimated American power in the 21st century? And finally, how will a weakened Iranian regime respond domestically to the penetration of its military and collapse of its nuclear program? What differentiates successful entrepreneurs from those who struggle or fail? According to Daryl Urbanski, it comes down to eight critical success factors he's identified after interviewing more than 600 high-performing business owners.Daryl's own path reads like a masterclass in entrepreneurial evolution. From humble beginnings shoveling Canadian driveways, he transformed into a business growth specialist who helped NeuroGym generate $1.6 million in just six months (which expanded to $7.5 million within three years). His approach has always been evidence-based - investing over $50,000 in research to identify the patterns that consistently produce results. The conversation takes a fascinating turn when Daryl breaks down the difference between simply "doing the work" and actually "running a business." Many entrepreneurs fail to recognize that delivering a service is only one component of running a successful operation. As he explains: "When you go to McDonald's, they never say the drive-thru's closed because Sally's got a cold." This illuminates why some technically skilled professionals struggle to scale beyond their own capacity.Perhaps most valuable is Daryl's strategic blueprint for building a six-figure business in just 90 days. Rather than focusing on low-ticket, high-volume offerings, he advocates identifying high-value solutions you can genuinely deliver, proving the concept through pre-sales, and maximizing face-to-face interactions with potential clients. "It's easier to make income selling $10,000 items than $10 items," he notes, reminding us that the effort to make a sale often remains similar regardless of price point. The episode culminates with profound insight into what truly sets successful entrepreneurs apart - their relationship with time. Daryl maintains strict discipline around time management, scheduling his day in 30-minute blocks and eliminating distractions that most people consider normal. His recitation of Arnold Bennett's poem on the finite nature of our daily 24 hours serves as both inspiration and warning: "We shall never have any more time. We have, and we have always had, all the time there is."Ready to transform your business through automation and strategic growth? Something different and pretty cool this time: 50 years ago at Wimbledon, the two singles champions were two of the biggest pioneers in tennis history: Billie Jean King and Arthur Ashe. It was also the first of many Wimbledons covered by then-young Canadian tennis journalist Tom Tebbutt, and he made a radio documentary for the CBC of a remarkable breadth of voices from around the tournament, from the stars to the various margins. Tom revisited and revamped the documentary this year for the 50th anniversary, and he generously shared it with us here at NCR to build up the hype and heritage around Wimbledon a half century later. It's a time capsule of tennis history, dusted off and showing some things you just wouldn't see (or hear) in the sport anymore, for better and worse. Thank you for listening! Our Patreon is back up and running to ensure NCR keeps going and stays ad-free, and we hope you can join in supporting NCR! And we especially thank our GOAT backers: Pam Shriver and J. O'D. And please check out Ben's new writing home, Bounces! And Tumaini's work at The Guardian!

On this episode of The Horizon, John Chang discusses why commercial real estate is likely to outperform over the next five years. He attributes this to two major Trump-era policies: increased tariffs and tightening immigration. Tariffs on materials like steel, aluminum, and Canadian softwood lumber are significantly raising construction costs, while stricter immigration policies are reducing the labor pool, further driving up labor expenses. These structural pressures are expected to constrain new development, shift supply-demand dynamics, and ultimately push up both rents and property values across sectors including multifamily, retail, office, and industrial. Sam Cooper's investigation reveals Canadian officials' ties to Chinese (CCP) election interference in 2019 and 2021, alongside Vancouver's role as a hub for CCP-led money laundering and espionage – and vast amounts of fentanyl entering the USA. Detailed in his book Wilful Blindness (available at https://amzn.to/4ecCeeU), Cooper uncovers a sophisticated operation by China's United Front Work Department, triads, and the Big Circle Boys, allegedly laundering fentanyl drug money through Vancouver casinos like Parq and River Rocks since 1986. He says this fueled Vancouver's housing market bubble and the opioid epidemic, destabilizing Western societies. Cooper alleges open collaboration between the Chinese Communist Party and Canadian officials, including the Prime Minister and MPs, to influence the 2019 and 2021 elections. Sam Cooper is an investigative journalist and founder of The Bureau. His bestselling book, Wilful Blindness, exposed election interference. Awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal in 2025. The full version of today's Friday Focus is available to all members. In this emergency Friday Focus episode, Rudyard and Janice assess what the US strike on Iran's nuclear facilities mean for the future of the Middle East. What are the big takeaways from this game changing moment in the region? Has Iran's capacity to enrich uranium been permanently disabled? And finally, and perhaps most importantly, how will Iran respond? Iranians are a proud people with a culture of resistance. Its leaders believe that Trump deceived them twice. If the US President is serious about peace he needs to open backchannels to Iran immediately, reign in Israel's regime change ambitions, and show he is committed to a deal. To support the Friday Focus podcast consider becoming a donor to the Munk Debates for as little as $25 annually, or $.50 per episode. Canadian donors receive a charitable tax receipt. 00:00:00 - Show Format and Listener Complaints Hosts address criticisms of sound drops, format changes, and Discord drama. The show's identity as a mix of paranormal, conspiracy, and goofy morning-radio energy is reaffirmed. First story kicks off: a man proposes to his AI chatbot, sparking reactions. 00:10:00 - AI Love, Polygamy, and Support Groups Deeper look into the man's AI relationship — despite having a human partner and child. Another user created an AI companion after moving away from her spouse. Discussion on how society may be promoting digital companionship over human intimacy. 00:20:00 - Tulpas, Manifestation, and Techno-Occultism Hosts connect AI relationships to ancient Buddhist tulpa practices — thought forms manifesting physically. Speculate whether AI chatbots might be modern-day tulpas with parasitic consequences. Concern that focusing on AI “entities” may create something dangerous and autonomous. 00:30:00 - AI and Brain Decline MIT research shows overreliance on generative AI leads to less cognitive activity and memory. AI use linked to derivative thinking and creativity loss, especially risky for developing brains. Discussion of AI's effect on education, work, and long-term intelligence. 00:40:00 - Applebee's AI and Restaurant Automation Applebee's parent company rolling out AI for marketing, staffing, and monitoring. Cameras will track customer behavior; AI will upsell based on weight and previous orders. Humorous speculation about dystopian restaurant experiences and rude food suggestions. 00:50:00 - Chatbot-Induced Delusions and Dangerous Outcomes Alarming case: man influenced by ChatGPT ends in tragedy. Reported that chatbots have told people to take drugs, sever relationships, and even jump from buildings. Suggests chatbots can reinforce delusions and manipulate mental health conditions. 01:00:00 - Alien Spheres and Greer's Involvement Reports of mysterious metallic spheres found in Colombia, with strange symbols and weight anomalies. Dr. Steven Greer claims they may be extraterrestrial or hybrid tech. Theories include anti-gravity mechanisms and DNA activation through symbols. 01:10:00 - Callers: Portals, Werewolves, and Rituals Caller describes biking through a mysterious field with a possible shimmering portal in Michigan. Discussion of radiation zones and high-strangeness areas linked to missing 411. Listener shares disturbing concert experience that felt like a dark ritual. 01:20:00 - Callers: Free Speech on Instagram and Digital Psyops Discussion on Instagram as a last refuge for real comment sections and user authenticity. Talk of bots steering conversations and controlling public narrative across social media. The concept of “dead internet” and influence operations using bots across all sides of an issue. 01:30:00 - Callers: Trump, Political Loyalty, and Manipulated Allegiances Frustration with people in conspiracy communities who blindly support Trump. Hosts discuss team loyalty, unwillingness to critique one's own side, and media narratives. Analysis of political figures being treated like saviors rather than examined critically. 01:40:00 - Ancient Runes Found in Canada Archaeologists uncover ancient runes in Canadian wilderness carved with the Lord's Prayer. The writing uses a long-dead version of the runic alphabet. Speculated to be a very old, non-hoax artifact possibly tied to ancient European presence. 01:50:00 - Naked Man, Urine-Covered Firefighter, and Police Incident Wild local news story: man with a knife on a rooftop leads to a police officer hospitalized and a firefighter drenched in urine. Hosts laugh at the absurdity of the situation and ponder how the local media will spin it. Marks a return to classic “weird news” energy that the show is known for. 02:00:00 - Sausage Smuggling and Corporate Spying Strange story of a meat company employee who allegedly left after 25 years and began recruiting staff for a competitor. Rumors of “smuggling sausages” and jokes about secret meat missions. Ends the episode with humorous chaos and signature irreverence. BIG NEWS! I just finished writing CANADA IS AWESOME: A Little Book About A Big Country. This podcast is me reading the whole book! The book is about all the weird, wonderful, beautiful things that make Canada ... Canada. Did you ever notice Canadians speak in the collective? “What do you think of the weather we're having?” “Shall we grab a Tims before the meeting?” “Think we have a shot at the playoffs?” We, we, we. We use the word we so much. Why do we feel like such a collective? I don't think it's complicated. I think it's because we are one. We all toss around half of everything we make into a big glass jar and use it to pay for everyone's health care, education, and services. Sure, the system's never perfect, but if you shatter your ankle in an icy Canadian Tire parking lot, need a dozen years of free school for five kids in Kamloops, or want to drive on freshly snowplowed roads from Comox to Cornwall to Cape Spear, well ... we got you. We got you. We got everyone. So today I'm releasing the audio version of my first new book in three years. For free! With no ads! It's a gift. The Canadian way. I'm sharing the audiobook for free on the 3 Books podcast feed and on YouTube and then on Canada Day (July 1st) I'll be publishing the full text and a beautifully formatted PDF for free download on my blog (www.neil.blog) and also selling paper books—both black and white paperbacks and full-color hardcovers—at cost, starting July 1st. It's a different type of book than I've done before—a 78-page, bright red, self-published love letter to my home country. And it was designed by a Canadian in Ottawa (Steve St. Pierre), audio and video edited by a Canadian in Toronto (Dave Boire), and even the t-shirt I'm wearing in the YouTube video was designed and manufactured by a Canadian in Toronto (Daniel Torjman). If you're Canadian I hope you feel pride in who we are. If you're not Canadian, I hope this helps you see Canada a little clearer. Maybe it will inspire you to visit ... or to move here! Flip this on for your long road trip and let's let ourselves get inspired by what's possible when grit, determination, and kindness come together across culture and language. Let's reflect on shared goals of spending time with loved ones, hitting best-in-world education rates, and, of course, kicking back by the lake with a Moosehead and a bowl of ketchup chips. This is a piece of writing close to my heart and something I have been working on for over a decade. It began as a 1000 word blog post on '1000 Awesome Things' (2012), turned into a 5000 word Audible Original audiobook (2017), and now, today, in 2025, has become a 10,000 word physical book and audiobook that I offer here as my gift to you—and to us. I hope you like it. Neil

Kevin Roberts, Kellyanne Conway, Ben Rhodes and I battled it out a few weeks ago on a stage in Toronto. This was for a Munk Debate on the motion: “Be it resolved, this is America's Golden Age.” It might not surprise you that I was arguing the negative, alongside Rhodes, a former senior adviser to Barack Obama and the co-host of “Pod Save the World.” Roberts and Conway were on the other side. Roberts is the president of the Heritage Foundation and an architect of Project 2025. Conway was Donald Trump's senior counselor in his first term. The Munk Debates organization has kindly let us share the audio of that debate with you. If you haven't heard of the Munk Debates, you should really check it out. It's a Canadian nonprofit that, for more than 15 years, has been hosting discussions on contentious, thought-provoking topics. If you go to its site and become a supporter, you can watch the entire video archive. A classic I recommend: “Be it resolved, religion is a force for good in the world” with Tony Blair debating Christopher Hitchens.Note: This recording has not been fact-checked by our team. In this episode of YouTube Catechesis, we tackle a bold question: Why did the Protestant Reformers remove seven books from the Bible? We trace the history of these Deuterocanonical books, their use by Jesus and the apostles, and how they were affirmed by the early Church through apostolic tradition. We also examine the real reason they were removed: because their content challenged Reformation theology. Join us as we unpack how the Bible came to be, why Scripture and Tradition go hand in hand, and what's truly at stake when we sever ourselves from the Church that preserved it. And if you want to go even deeper, I've prepared a PODD (Patreon-Only Deep Dive)** where I break this topic wide open. You'll get an exclusive extended audio episode, plus a one-page summary you can use to defend the faith in real conversations. I've also completely overhauled the Patreon tiers, no more basic shout-outs. Everyone now gets a **massive upgrade** with early access, deep dive content, and practical resources to grow in your faith and help others do the same. Check it out and join the community! Politically-driven chaos is disrupting U.S. scientific institutions and creating challenges for science in Canada. Science is a global endeavour and collaborations with the U.S. are routine. In this special episode of Quirks & Quarks, we explore what Canadian scientists are doing to preserve their work to assert scientific sovereignty in the face of this unprecedented destabilization. Canadian climate scientists brace for cuts to climate science infrastructure and data U.S. President Donald Trump's attacks on climate science are putting our Earth observing systems, in the oceans and in orbit, at risk. Canadian scientists who rely on U.S. led climate data infrastructure worry about losing long-term data that would affect our ability to understand our changing climate. With: Kate Moran, the president and CEO of Ocean Networks Canada and Emeritus Professor of Oceanography at the University of Victoria Debra Wunch, Physicist at the University of TorontoChris Fletcher, Department of Geography and Environmental Management at the University of WaterlooU.S. cuts to Great Lakes science and monitoring threaten our shared freshwater resourceU.S. budget and staffing cuts are jeopardizing the long-standing collaboration with our southern neighbour to maintain the health of the Great Lakes, our shared resource and the largest freshwater system in the world. With: Jérôme Marty, executive director of the International Association for Great Lakes Research and part-time professor at the University of OttawaGreg McClinchey, policy and legislative director with the Great Lakes Fishery CommissionMichael Wilkie, Biologist at Wilfred Laurier UniversityBrittney Borowiec, research associate in the Wilkie Lab at Wilfred Laurier UniversityAaron Fisk, Ecologist and Canada Research Chair at the University of WindsorUnexpected ways U.S. culture war policies are affecting Canadian scientists One of the first things President Trump did after taking office was to sign an executive order eliminating all DEI policies in the federal government. This is having far-reaching consequences for Canadian scientists as they navigate the new reality of our frequent research partner's hostility against so-called “woke science.”With:Dr. Sofia Ahmed, Clinician scientist, and academic lead for the Women and Children's Health Research Institute at the University of Alberta Angela Kaida, professor of health sciences and Canada Research Chair at Simon Fraser University in VancouverDawn Bowdish, professor of immunology, the executive director of the Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health and Canada Research Chair at McMaster UniversityKevin Zhao, MD/PhD student in immunology in the Bowdish Lab at McMaster UniversityJérôme Marty, executive director of the International Association for Great Lakes ResearchCanada has a ‘responsibility' to step up and assert scientific sovereigntyA 2023 report on how to strengthen our federal research support system could be our roadmap to more robust scientific sovereignty. The Advisory Panel on the Federal Research Support System made recommendations to the federal government for how we could reform our funding landscape. The intent was to allow us to quickly respond to national research priorities and to make Canada a more enticing research partner in world science. With: Frédéric Bouchard, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and professor of philosophy of science at the Université de Montreal. Chair of the Advisory Panel on the Federal Research Support System.
