We've all been there… someone says or does something that presses your buttons, without taking a moment to pause… you react. In these moments, our reaction is often overblown, unkind, or at the very least, unnecessary. Now, more than ever, we need to become the masters of our own energy. We're living in a time that feels very divisive; adding this moment of pause and reflection into our daily practice is imperative. Show others what it looks like to listen and breathe; from this place of calm, true healing and connection is possible. Episode Summary: In this episode of Dear Songwriter, we dive into the art of storytelling in songwriting. Host Connor Lin Frost explores how Noah Kahan, a popular folk-influenced pop artist, uses three key songwriting techniques to elevate his music. You'll learn how to incorporate these tools into your own songs to create stronger, more compelling lyrics.Key Takeaways:The Detailed Two-Part ChorusNoah Kahan breaks from the norm by creating choruses that are more intricate and story-driven. This method helps progress the narrative without sacrificing the listener's ability to sing along. Conor analyzes the chorus from Kahan's song Dial Drunk to illustrate this point.WordplayThe clever use of language—whether through alliteration or reinterpreting meanings—can add depth and catchiness to your lyrics. Conor uses examples from Kahan's songs Homesick and Dial Drunk to show how wordplay can advance a story in just a few concise lines. The Dialogue BridgeLyrics that mimic real-life conversation help immerse the listener into the song's world. Conor highlights how Kahan employs direct address in Dial Drunk's bridge to create a genuine dialogue between two characters, enhancing the emotional impact of the song.Actionable Challenge: Try incorporating one of these techniques into your next song. Choose between a detailed two-part chorus, clever wordplay, or a dialogue bridge to elevate your storytelling.Listener Engagement: We'd love your feedback! Do you enjoy these episodes? Are they too detailed, or not detailed enough? Jordan Soderholm is co-founder and chief growth officer of Ranger Station, an American heritage fragrance brand founded in 2015 with husband Steve Soderholm, and founder of Nashville Candle + Supply, a private label and custom candle manufacturing company established in 2021.  A native of Knoxville, Tennessee, Jordan came to Nashville in 2009 to study marketing and fashion merchandising at Belmont University. During her sophomore year of studies, Jordan began a full-time position at ABLE, which was then a start-up fashion brand and social enterprise supporting women in Africa through the creation of leather handbags and accessories. She stayed with the company through graduation and for a decade, minus a two-year hiatus as an independent wardrobe stylist, working her way from intern to fashion director and helping to establish the global brand it is today. Along the way, Jordan was watching Steve dabble in candle making while home between gigs as a touring professional drummer. Her keen business sense and entrepreneurial spirit helped recognize the business potential in the hobby and she worked after hours to help Steve get the brand off the ground in 2015. In 2021, she left ABLE to work with Ranger Station full time and to take the brand to the next level. It was then that she also founded Nashville Candle + Supply, a boutique private label and custom candle manufacturing company with clients worldwide.  Today, Ranger Station is growing rapidly but thoughtfully. Ranger Station products are available for purchase from retail partners across the United States, Canada and the UK, as well as their flagship store in Nashville's 12South neighborhood opened in July 2023. Ranger Station also unveiled its first artist collaboration in the summer of 2023 with Noah Kahan, the folk singer/songwriter from New England, to bring to life his third LP, “Stick Season” – a candle that sold out in a record 24 hours with over 1,000 people on the waitlist. Collaborations with ERNEST, The Band Camino, Lauren Akins and Thomas Rhett and NEEDTOBREATHE followed, with others in the works. The brand has been featured in Esquire, Cosmopolitan, Architectural Digest, Cowboys & Indians, Byrdie, WWD, Who What Wear, The Strategist, PEOPLE, Southern Living, Billboard and countless other publications.   Aside from Ranger Station, Jordan chases around her two young children with Steve, and enjoys gardening, reading and styling through her Substack “You didn't ask.” and other endeavors. Sunshine, flowers, and celebrations are just around the corner. Catch the full excitement of this cherished holiday on our live stream recap here.   As we bask in the post-Groundhog Day glow, the anticipation builds for the Grammy Awards happening this Sunday night at 8 pm EST. We're thrilled to see performances by Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman, and we're especially rooting for Noah Kahan, nominated for Best New Artist with his hit, "Stick Season." The Established team is all buzzed up about this one, and we've got our eyes peeled on the predictions here.   But that's not all on the horizon. We're also gearing up for the America's Seed Fund Road Tours starting soon in Orlando and San Juan, Puerto Rico (https://www.americasseedfund.us/road-tour), and the excitement around SXSW. Join us as we host a day of events for innovators and startups at the Established House on March 10th, 2024. More details here.   Switching gears to a mystery that's potentially solved – the lost aircraft of Amelia Earhart might have been found in a $11 million effort by a private individual. Earhart, a fellow Purdue Boilermaker, planned much of her journey from the campus airport, and this discovery could be a historic find. Dive into the story here and here.   In the realm of technology and health, the first human has received a Neuralink brain implant, potentially revolutionizing the way we interact with technology and treat neurological conditions. The future of AI is also making waves in the smartphone industry, with Google, Samsung, and soon Apple, introducing generative AI capabilities that promise to transform our digital experiences.   Meanwhile, the digital world grapples with the ethics of AI, as explicit AI-generated images of Taylor Swift raise concerns about non-consensual content, spotlighting the urgent need for regulation.   Elon Musk's new AI venture is another hot topic, with reports suggesting he's aiming to raise as much as $6B for his startup, reflecting the immense potential and costs associated with developing generative AI.   Looking ahead to the Super Bowl, we preview what's expected to be the most expensive tickets ever for the game between the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs in Las Vegas. Plus, we discuss Taylor Swift's logistical race against time to perform after her Tokyo concert, and we give you a sneak peek at this year's Super Bowl commercials. Check out the story here.   We wrap up with some personal updates, including the sleek Ridge Wallet and an intriguing way to explore global radio stations with Radio Garden. Dipping their toes in musical waters for the first time in a while, our boys are listening to one of each other's favorite albums. Paul has challenged Arlo to Noah Kahan's 2022 singer-songwriter album Stick Season, and Arlo has in turn challenged Paul to Bob Dylan's extremely singer-songwriter classic, 1975's Blood on the Tracks. They grapple with each artist's distinctive vocal stylings, compare the albums' sense of mourning for loves lost, and are generally perplexed by what music the other is drawn to.   NEXT: Drop a sick beat, we're gonna freestyle. Noah Kahan is a singer and songwriter from Strafford, Vermont. Last year, in 2022, he released Stick Season, his third record. The title track from that record went viral on TikTok when Noah was first writing it, and posting pieces of it. One of those videos has over 10 million plays. And as of this recording, on Spotify, the full song has almost 100 million streams. For this episode, Noah talked to me about the process of making that song: What led him to first post half a song on TikTok, and what happened after that. You'll hear the raw recordings off of his phone; the different drafts he made as he worked; you'll hear the different versions he first shared on social media; and you'll hear his bracingly honest appraisal of the winding path he took  —  in his life, and in his music – to get to where he is now. Noah Kahan remembers getting excited when a song he put on SoundCloud hit a thousand plays. Now, his songs have been streamed more than one billion times. Kahan's metaphorical use of “stick season,” the time between Vermont foliage and proper snow, went viral on TikTok last year and sparked covers by Zach Bryan, Chelsea Cutler, Maisie Peters and countless fans who recorded themselves strumming in their bedrooms. The album that followed, recorded in Guilford, debuted at #14 on the Billboard 200 Chart and has been Kahan's most successful to date. He performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live and the Kelly Clarkson Show and sold out venues coast to coast. And then, after the first leg of his tour, he returned home to the Upper Valley and the isolated, between-villages places he crystallized on his third full-length album, Stick Season. With lyrics that describe “dirt roads named after high school friends' grandfathers,” the record is, in Kahan's words, “a love letter to New England.” Turns out returning to a place you've described so candidly can feel a bit strange. He's had to reconcile his romanticized version of Vermont with the reality: He's just home, and it's cold, and he has to go outside and clean up after the dog. There's a “weirdness of existing in a place that you've just written about,” he said. Kahan is going back on tour later this month. He'll return to Vermont this summer, for two sold-out shows on the Burlington waterfront. He joined VTDigger on Zoom earlier this month.
